How to paint your wheels without taking them off. Quick way to paint your wheels, without having to jack up each wheel and remove it. Just be careful with overspray. Demonstrated here on a Holden VE Ute, but will obviously work with any car.
Should only take you about 5 mins per wheel.
Music: Heater - MK2
UPDATE: this has held up really well over time. The caliper paintI used was really good (brand VHT, which I bought at an auto accessories shop. But you should be able to buy something similar at any hardware store). Regular paint might also work fine, as the wheels themselves don't get too hot (compared to brake calipers) but you should at least use paint that works on metal (read the can - should say what it will and won't stick to). I only needed the one can for all 4 wheels.

Brilliant. I'll use some meths (methylated spirit, not crystal meth) after sanding to remove oils etc. Was going to use gloss but you've sold me on matt now. You've answered a lot of questions and saved people a ton of time with this video. Thank you.

Good job! You can also use a pack of playing cards pushed in behind the rim; go around the wheel making sure there's plenty of overlap...

I only waited about 30-40 mins between coats. As long as they're not very heavy coats, that's plenty of time

Hi Thiago, Thanks for the comment, and hopefully my reply isn't too late. Regular spray paint won't be very good... it's more designed for art and stuff, and won't stay on wheels long term. You need some sort of high-temperature paint, because your brakes and wheels can get very hot while driving. I used "VHT Wheel paint" because that's what was available at the shop I went to. I think it cost $15. If you go to any car/auto parts store, and ask for "wheel paint", it should be fine. Doesn't matter what brand. Just choose the colour you want.

Crazy I don't get notifications about these comments from youtube. Sorry for the late reply. As Steven said, some paints already have a protectant in them. The majority of the time though, you don't need a clear coat if using a gloss paint (we're not talking about panels of the actual car - so you should be sweet).

Yeah the reason to cover your brakes is so you don't get paint all over your callipers and brake pads. Probably smells like sh** now too whenever u brake hard I'm guessing

I want to spray this way but what about the bolts holding on the wheel? If you spray over them won't that cement them to the wheel and they won't be easy to remove? And thank you for the quick video!

Thank you Almond Smith. The bolts will get painted as well, which is probably what you want anyway, but so will the gap between the bolt and the wheel. That shouldn't be a problem though, it takes a large amount of force to get those bolts to loosen normally, so with a layer or two of paint won't make much of a difference. At least I haven't had any problems with it. The one bummer though, is when using the tool to get the bolts off, it'll scratch up the paint. So you may need to either do a touch-up once you put them back on.... or get ALL the paint off the bolts while they are off the wheel.

No, if it's looking good and not coming off....should be ok then. It's usually just that the wheel/brake area can get very hot, so it's better to use some spray paint that can handle high temperature. But if you're saying it's not having any issues.... should be fine.

Hi Adam. You want to paint your lights? Basically anywhere where there will be high amount of heat (brake calipers, engine etc) you want to use high temperature paint. Regular paint will burn off.

You should be able to get that or a similar spray at any auto parts store. I gave it 2 coats. 1 light coat and then a heavier final coat

Corinthian Boling lol. Haha. Yeah for sure the proper way is to take the wheels off the car. I would even take the tyres off the wheels so I could paint them properly.... far away from the actual car. But this is the "lazy" way (without taking them off). In my case I didnt think the wheels were worth the trouble (they were chipped and gutter rashed to hell), so just wanted them to look slightly better.

It's the lazy way to do it for sure, but hey, if it works it works. The proper way would be to take it to professionals, where they can strip off the tyres and dip the entire wheel in a mixture of paint or electroplate it / powder coat it. if doing it at home and feeling a bit more enthusiastic, take the wheels off the car and paint them far from the car, as the wind will blow paint all over.

Maybe. If you want to jack up each corner, take off each wheel, remove or mask each tyre, paint the wheels, then jack up each corner again and put each wheel back on :)

It take 2 minutes or less to jack up a car and pull a wheel off... taking them off is easier then trying to scrub them while on the car.

Considering what it looked like before, and it only cost a can of paint (as opposed to spending $$$ to have them professionally powder coated) it ain't as bad as u think
