Update May 21!
I am slowly in the process of demonetizing all my videos, I was never in it for the money or the glory. I just like to help people. This way you can rest assured i'm not making a video only to trigger an algorithm or as click bait. I have been a bit disillusioned with it all lately, and hopefully this will help.
Instead if you wish to support me you can buy me a coffee or beer instead :) entirely your choice though!
www.buymeacoffee.com/astrostace
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This video will tell you everything you need to be able to photograph Comet NEOWISE with basic photography equipment! (no tracking mounts or telescopes included!)
The video has a few sections:
-Equipment needed
-Preparation and Planning
-Getting the shot
-Finishing touches
Stacking and editing is done in Photoshop, but you could do similar edits in Affinity Photo and GIMP (stacking would need to be done in DSS in this case).
500 rule clarification.
500 rule is for full frame, if using a crop frame make sure you take this into account. So the calculation for a crop frame would be 500/(lens length x 1.6)
In all seriousness though, the NPF rule is much better. There are lots of online calculators for this :)
Thanks for watching and all the support :)

I saw Hale-Bopp when I was little too! I remember it always being over my mates house while we were playing out!

Nice image...glad the mojo has come back...we all get it at times in photography generally too...the weather and no imaging and such add life pressures and less time and it mounts up....best wishes

Stace, you are my hero! I’ve never seen this method of stacking, wasn’t a fan of the other manual stacking processes I’ve seen. I’m going to take another look at my Neowise data. Luna’s handwriting is great btw, such a good helper! Thanks you two, I enjoy all your videos.

Great job! I was out just last night getting some images of the comet and was looking to see if there's a way to process them without having to acquire and learn a new piece of software. Your description of how to stack a short series of images in Photoshop is just the thing! Looking forward to the results. Thanks Stace.

Well done Stace, lovely captures and very well put together tutorial. I snapped Neowise last night through a little gap, but I'm going to keep blasting Neowise with the camera until I've got something I'm really happy with. Like you Hale Bopp was the last naked eye comet I saw, and that was a looong time ago! So lets not waste this amazing opportunity guys, a naked eye comet is a magical thing! :)

Thank you - that was very timely. I managed to get some pics Saturday night. I took about 50. Half a dozen at 200mm I was able to merge and get a hint of the blue ion tail as well as the yellow dust tail. I used a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens with 2 secs at 200mm end and 5 at the 70 end. ISO mix of 1600 and 3200

Got images already and one even shared on facebook...but as I was looking through your photoshop editing guide part I went at one place full "facepalm" as you just showed me a MUCH simpler way of doing manual stacking as i have been doing so far :D

I have been looking for a easy to understand explanation of how to get a good image of Comet Neowise...and finally I have found it. I got a half decent shot on my phone camera but really want to get one with my Nikon D7000 and 70-300 lens. If I can fiqure out the exposure length! (Fingers crossed). Thank you for this video.

Great video explanation. As an amateur & channel newbie, can I ask what the image stacking actually does? I don't have photoshop etc - stacking is something i've only heard/seen on various channels
@AstroStace
@AstroStace 4 года назад
Hey Karen! Thanks for getting in touch! Stacking basically boosts the signal (of the object) in your image compared to the noise (because of low light etc) . It’s all about maximising signal to noise ratio. There’s another video on my channel called stacking for beginners, give it a watch and let me know what you think :)
@AstroStace
@AstroStace 4 года назад
You can also use a free program such as Deep sky stacker to carry out the stacking bit, then use a free image editor such as GIMP to do the post processing

Thanks Stace. I had planned on going out tonight to try to shoot it with a Tamron 200-400mm and maybe a 70-200mm Tamron. Weather permitting. We;'ve been having some weird weather this year. Your video gave me some key tips. What was the software you used?
@AstroStace
@AstroStace 4 года назад
:) software...which bit? Sky Safari or PhotoPills? :)
@GaryMCurran
@GaryMCurran 4 года назад
@@AstroStace the Photopills. I already have an older version of SkySafari. I found the PhotoPills in the Google Play Store, but even $10 is a bit dear right now. I'll go with about 1.5-2 seconds at 400mm. That is, if the skies clear out tonight and I can get a good view of it.

Stace! I just thought! Isn't it the 300 rule for crop sensor cameras like the 200D. I think the 500 rule is for full frame.
@AstroStace
@AstroStace 4 года назад
Yeah I’ve never heard it called the 300 rule :) I just usually take my crop factor into account so : 500/(Lens length x1.6) . I use PhotoPills now which has got a calculator that takes it all into account anyway. I mentioned there’s lots of apps out there to calculate it :)
@AstroLaVista
@AstroLaVista 4 года назад
@@AstroStace Phew! that's all good then, Stace :) I'd heard of PhotoPills but hadn't witnessed it in action. One of the many good bits of your video :) I liked that you mentioned bino's. I sold all my binos and scopes etc a year ago when I moved house and Neowise has got me shopping for binos again :)

Thanks for the amazing tutorial. I am using photoshop for the first time. So when you mentioned notch(or nudge) the frame, I really got confused at around 13.50. Can you explain how can I do that using keyboard in Windows laptop?
