Generally, if "ai" is followed by an "s," a "t" or an "e" it sounds like she says in the video (French "è"). But in standard French, when there's no letter after "ai" it is pronounced like the English "ay" (or the French "é"). That way conditional and future are easy to differentiate. Conditional : Je parlerais = je parlerè Future : Je parlerai = je parleré
@emmanuela5621
@emmanuela5621 7 лет назад
Millions of people in France prononce parlerai and parlerais the same, either both with an é, or both with an è. J'ai and balai are also pronounced with "é" by half the country.
@zamzamazawarma928
@zamzamazawarma928 7 лет назад
If foreigners want to be heard in French, they'd better use the correct pronunciation. Btw, I've never heard someone say "balai" with an "é" sound, not even in some parts in Belgium where they "é" many "è" sounds.
@emmanuela5621
@emmanuela5621 7 лет назад
All the pronunciations I mentioned are correct. Everyone in Southern France says balai with an "é". It is a correct pronunciation. I say "balé" myself and I'm not even from Southern France. It's certainly not helping foreigners to not teach them that there is regional variation when it comes to pronunciation.
@TAKEmeTOtheMORGUE
@TAKEmeTOtheMORGUE 7 лет назад
There always are exceptions like "balai," that's why I said "generally."
@TAKEmeTOtheMORGUE
@TAKEmeTOtheMORGUE 7 лет назад
ea ea It's easier for teachers and even for learners to learn the standard language first and then to learn the regional variations when they visit the specific region. It's impossible to learn every and each accents.

If the verb endings “ais” and “ai” are pronounced exactly the same, how do you distinguish between the tenses? When I was learning French as a child, I understood that as a verb ending, “ai” was pronounced like a long A sound in English while the verb endings “ais” and “ait” are pronounced as you’ve described the regular sound for “ai” (same sound as “è” or “ê”) I also know that “ai” in maison is pronounced by some with a long A sound and by others with the sound è… Which is correct? Are these just regional differences? I’m in Canada, and there seem to be variations even here depending on the region. I still maintain that the verb ending pronunciation should be different depending on the tense in order to distinguish the meaning.

hi Alexa, I found that the "ai" as in the words traîner and traité are also pronounced like /é/ instead of /è/. Is there any rules for that?
@awaken0131
@awaken0131 Год назад
I am not sure if it is true. In french, it generally sounds better and it is easier to pronounce when you harmonise vowels. The last syllables of "traîner" and "traité" are guaranteed to be pronounced as é so the preceding syllables are harmonised and become something like "tréné" and "trété". This also applies to "aimer" that she has mentioned too.

Alexa, I've been reading the Count of Monte Cristo, and I wondered if the same "ai" rule applies to the name of the count's "slave" (ward) Haydée. Is that pronounced "aidée"? Also, one that I'm perennially unsure of is "pais"? When I hear French speakers it seems to me that they are saying "pay-ee". Is that an exception, or it just me? Thanks. I really love your videos. So clear and concise. Plus, you are very charming. If I ever get to live in France, I hope I will meet many French friends just like you! Dennis (or, rather, Denis!)

what are the differences between the pronunciation of accent grave, acute and circumflex vowels?
@TAKEmeTOtheMORGUE
@TAKEmeTOtheMORGUE 7 лет назад
The prononciation of circumflex vary a lot in the francophonie, but she will probably say that ê is the same as è but longer. In that case they both sounds [ε]. The accute accent (é) on an e sound like the English "ay" : [e]. And in Standard French the apparently change nothing on other vowels (which is totally false in Canadian and American French).

C'est difficile pour moi de dire ces deux lettres . J'ai étudié le Français pour trois mois . How would you recommend me to keep learning pronunciation? It's hard for me to keep learn pronunciation when I feel like I'm barely making any progress, please and thanks!
@buttercup3576
@buttercup3576 7 лет назад
I would just recommend lots of repetition, and watching of videos and repeating with consistency. Also if you can, have a teacher or French speaker check your pronunciation, and you could possibly record any corrections they may give you, or jot the corrections down in phonics in a way that you'll remember for later on. Your French is pretty good already in three months 😌

@yasho8927 3 года назад
Many times I can’t even catch the many fine differences in pronunciation of ai, e, è, é …. In my language - Bulgarian - an “e” is ALWAYS an “e” regardless of combinations. If you want to say “e” just say “e” and right down “e” …. French is way more sophisticated and difficult in that regard.

@korelly
@korelly Год назад
Le mot "j'ai" ça doit normalement se prononcer comme jé, pour le distinguer de "j'aie" qui est le subjonctif. Un verbe se terminant en -ai doit se prononcer é pour distinguer son futur de son conditionnel, comme dans Je serai/ je serais :é/è. Vous avez bien prononcé balai avec un è évident, et non pas un e qui sonne ambigu entre é et è. Un pull, on a des mots français pour nommer ça, on dit un chandail ou un gilet.

I find this so confusing lol. Like is it just my ears? The ai in balai sounds different to me than the ai in j'aime. The first sounds more like an English ay (like the ay in the words lay, may, etc), same with the word "mais" whereas the ai in j'aime sounds like an English e of "bed." Or what about the word "caisse"? The ai sounds different in this word compared to mais or balai at least to me as well. I think Takeme TotheMorgue's comment makes the most sense to me, I don't know, it just seems so confusing right now.
