Thank so much! I had assumed Ric rac and fishbone were the same plant.

Thanks for the tips. I also love the idea of using a baggie for a mini greenhouse.

Thank you for this video Alan- I have what I thought was a Fishbone but now believe to be a ricrac, and can’t wait to propagate a couple more :)

Thank you for the video. In the beginning you said it will take like 4/5 days to callus over. Are you saying I should take a cutting then wait for it to callus and then do this?
@ThePlantFarmSpokane
@ThePlantFarmSpokane Год назад
Yes, you want the plant to callus over before you plant it again.

Hi Alan 😊 Is it going to work if we propagate short segment, one leaf like...?
@ThePlantFarmSpokane
@ThePlantFarmSpokane Год назад
It’s better if you have a segment that is at least a couple of inches long.

It might sound nuts, but when rooting epiphyllums I have better success doing so the day or two after a full moon.

Definitely not nuts at all. The moon affects peoples emotions and the waves if the ocean and many things on earth if not everythingg

Which Way is upside down? Typically when I take a cutting from a Pothos... I would take the end that I had cut and plant that end in soil or water propagate that end. It looks as if you were saying if you cut off a 6 inch piece from your Rick rack you should put it in soil with the oldest part of the cutting… Meaning The piece of the plant that was farthest away from the soil before you cut should be put in the soil as opposed to the location where are you cut... Is that what you’re saying? It seems backwards to me but if that’s the way to do it I want to do it right!

You will want to plant the portion that was closest to the roots into the new pot of soil.

Is there one that’s called a “Zig Zag” cactus as well?
@ThePlantFarmSpokane
@ThePlantFarmSpokane 5 лет назад
Zig Zag is a common name for both Ric Rac and Fishbone!

How can I tell which side is up and which side is down? I am trying to root mine in water but some jelly-like substance is coming out from the cut wound in water.

I just got one and I’m looking forward to using this method to propagate. I would imagine that the the end to place into the soil that you are using to propagate, would be the end that would directly lead to the soil of the mother plant (were it still attached to the plant). I think a good way to make sure you don’t get mixed up is to get a piece of paper, tape the cutting to it and draw an arrow down to indicate which end you will place in soil. Or you could always just place them the right way into a empty container to callous over for the few days. That way when you are ready to plant, you simply lift up a piece and place into the soil. Hope that helps :)

Maybe the stuff is leaking because it's not been calloused over. Let it dry out for a few days first.

When we send out cuttings we try to send a length of leaf that only has one cut end, so that is the end you would put into soil or water. If you are cutting it yourself, use the end that was closest to the roots originally to put it in the new pot. Make sure you let the cut end callous over for 3-5 days before putting it into the soil or water.

Everything but the soil to use

We would suggest using a cactus/succulent potting mix. If you don’t have that available, you can also mix 50% all purpose potting mix and 50% perlite (by volume) to make a better draining soil.
