How to propagate Japanese Maples from Cuttings (Step by Step)

In this video, we will show you how to propagate Japanese maples from cuttings. The best time to do this is in late Spring to early Summer when you have lots of new shoots and leaves are hardened off. You can easily make lots of cuttings out of branches that you prune during this time.
Key takeaway:
1. Make cuttings out of new shoots/branches that elongated & are hardened off this Spring for the best chance. (not a soft one...also hardened wood is possible but less chance)
2. Leave only 2-4 leaves to control transpiration
3. Use Akadama or mix of peat moss and bark/potting soil
4. Before planting, put cuttings in the water for 1-2 days and dip it into a rooting hormone powder
5. Plant cuttings deep enough so it will not move (If it constantly move, it won't root)
6. If needed, use a wire (U shaped) to stabilize the cutting so it will not move. This helps a lot.
7. Keep the soil adequately moist and avoid direct sun/heat.

@@mdsea7923 Depends on how quickly they grow but I would usually wait for a year or two because these leaves will help generate energy and develop the roots faster.

Thanks for watching and for your comment! The idea is to keep the cutting alive and active by allowing these few leaves to 1) continue generating nutrients (sugar) with photosynthetic activity and sending it down to the bottom which helps turns develop roots and 2) controlling transpiration. (You do not want to have many leaves that keep evaporating moisture when you don't have any roots)

Thanks again for the video. I will be giving it a try with my maples. I only have a couple mature tree and they have not yet awoken. I can see buds starting to swell though so it should be soon! I noticed you have multiple air layers on your tree on all the main branches. I want to do something similar with my trees as well since they are growing crazy and look very messy. Figured I would get some nice little bonsai from those ugly branches. I was wondering when would be a good time to transplant them and if I can start an air layer on the same day? Thanks

Thanks for watching! I don't usually do both repotting and air layering on the same tree in the same year as I think it's too stressful for the tree. However it doesn't mean it's not possible and I'm sure others do that. If you want to do it, I would suggest you repot the trees in early Spring, let them grow and if they show vigorous growth, you can start an air layer in mid/late Spring.

Nice video. But I think I suggested this before, if you're not going to speak can you put a black outline around your texts. Its difficult to see white at the best of times, but against a bright part of your video it's even harder. This is easy to do when you're selecting font colour, etc.

Very informative, thank you. Is peat moss and bark essential? I have multi-purpose compost, cactus/succulent soil and perlite. I have the seedling soil. Is it possible to use a mixture of multi-purpose compost without peat along with either the perlite or cactus/succeculent soil or seedling soil? Thanks

Lots of ideas, suggestions, recommendation on the soil for cuttings. If you have Akadama and Kanuma, that'd be best. If not I had success with other soils like cactus soil.

Thank you for your video, I've used the same propagating method as you did about a month ago. I don't have a greenhouse so I covered them in a plastic bag, made a small hole on it to provide some air flow. Placed it in partial shade also. My question is, where shall I place them during winter time? Your answer would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!

I would protect them in a garage if the outside temperature goes below 38-40F continuously during winter. Yes airflow also is important to prevent it from developing mold..

Menedael serves both as rooting stimulator & plant vitalizer. I have never seen anyone being able to progapate JM cuttings in water..that would be nice :)

Is there a way to tell if a mature Japanese maple was grafted by the seedlings that grow from it? As I understand, rooting cuttings is the only way to ensure to get the same type of color, and leaves as the parent plant (beyond grafting that is). I am having difficulty figuring out which cultivars we have. Both have similar leaf shape, but not consistent color, and the one with the leaves that tend to be more akin to a Bloodgood is not quite as tall as the other that gets quite more scarlet.

Usually you can see if it's grafted unless the tree is old and completely merged smoothly. Air layering is another and probably the best way to propagate to make a bonsai and ensure the child tree inherits the same genetics as the parent tree. There are similar red maple cultivers - blood good, emperor, scarlet wonder, firegrow etc. Hope you can ID them! 😁

Yes I keep the soil moist (not too wet) all the time. Once it's rooted and established, it can survive below freeze temperature (like 28F) for a day or two but I would protect them in an unheated garage or room if too cold outside.

I am looking to do this with a JM that’s in my local park this coming spring, unfortunately I’m in an apartment so can’t let them sit in the shade outside, will indirect sunlight in my apartment suffice? Also how often do you water the cuttings, you say leave alone for several months but are you watering in that time and if so how often? Thanks for the video super informative and can’t wait to try it this spring!

I think it's possible to do this with indirect sunlight. Just to make sure you use a healthy/strong shoot and stick it into the soil deep enough so it's super stable. You just need to make sure the soil is moist (not damp) all the time as it initially does not have any roots. Good luck!

Help! We just had a large tree branch fall and break our dwarf Japanese Maple. It is July. I will try your technique and hope it helps with new plants, but is it possible to save the trunk and get it to grow again? Thank you so much for this helpful video, it is beautiful!

Thanks for watching the video and sorry to hear about the damage! Not sure what exactly happened but if the trunk is broken completely and separated from the roots system, there's not much you can do about it unless you wanna try propagating from small cuttings :) if there's still some trunk left at the bottom with roots, I would seal the wound where the damage happened to minimize further damage from any bacteria/infection and hope it will not die back & produce new buds 🙂

My work pruned their massive maple and i was able to take a large (2inch) thick branch. Should i try to save the whole branch or just trim the smaller cuttings? I guess i could take cuttings and just have a fun what if project with the big branch?

I'd recommend you take smaller cuttings with 2-3 buds/leaves per cutting to thave a good balance of the amount of water the cutting can absord vs how many water evaporates from those leaves.

How well do the cuttings grow? Many articles I have read say they have a short lifespan or long-term health issues. Are they just finicky for the first few years?

From my experience, JM cuttings are a bit difficult to propagate but once they do, they grow nicely in general. I think the key is to take time and allow the roots to grow really well initially.

Would love to see any success updates on shishigashira in particular. I’ve heard SSG is virtually impossible and some experienced nurserymen have tried for 3-4 decades with zero success lol. But I’ve also heard a rare few were successful.

I am monitoring several cuttings from Shishigashira right now. Most of them had already dropped leaves and dried up. However there are several that are doing fine after about 2 months. We will see.....

Where do you keep the cutting as they root? Do you put them in the shade with very little sun or do you leave them in normal conditions as a full grown maple? Also do you have to keep the soil very moist and not let it dry out?

I keep them in partial shade just as most other Japanese maple trees in the garden. It will protect them first when hot temperature is expected anytime between late Spring - Summer as they can easily be affected. Yes it's important to water them frequently to retain moisture. (But not too damp wet)

It varies from several months to over a year. I tried placing a plastic cover for some and I didn't see any significant differences.

Thanks for your comment! I usually use cuttings that I prune in the Spring and powered rooting hormone. Dipping them into menedael is optional. While I think it's helpful, lots of people are successful in propagating from cuttings without using it :) Good luck!

This is a great channel and thank you for the informative video. I have a few questions for you: 1. How would you know the cuttings have rooted and not died? 2. Is it too late to try to start now? It's July right now and your video mentioned to give it at least 6 months for it to root. 6 months will bring us to December. I'm located in Toronto and I'm wondering if it will be too cold. 3. Will cuttings that small (less than 6 months in age) surive the Canadian winter? Our winters are not too harsh I feel (gets as cold as -20c with windchill). Or should these be brought indoors during winter time? Will these cuttings do well indoors? 4. When would it be appropriate to repot the cuttings? Thanks for watching and glad to hear this channel is informative :) All great questions! To answer: 1. I will publish a video on this on July 7th. Hope it helps :) 2. No, it's not too late although the chances are higher in Spring. Depending on how fast it roots, it might happen before winter or might happen in Spring next year. 3. Those really thin/young ones would not survive the extreme cold temperature. Even for mature Japanese maple bonsai trees, it's advised to bring them into an unheated greenhouse if the outside temperature is consistently below 28F (or -2C). I place most of (if not all) maple bonsai trees/cuttings in an unheated greenhouse during the winter. 4. It's best to report in early Spring. But if it's rooted later in Spring/early Summer, you can repot then but I will not disturb the roots too much at that time. Hope this helps!

@@MomijiEn Thank you for the answers! With regards to #3. In lieu of moving these into a unheated greenhouse, would you suggest moving it into a garage or an enclosed porch would work? My thinking is with the garage, it has little to no sun and the enclosed porch is still cold but much warmer than outside. I was also thinking possibly wrapping the pot in burlap. Not sure if this would work either. I had another question for you for this video. Initially, you used plant revitalizer to dip the cuttings for a short period. I can't seem to source this in my area. Is this neccesary for the process? I've seen growth hormone but not the plant revitalizer. Again, thank you again for the videos, I'm a huge fan already.

@@ancalime3 As far as overwintering goes, you could keep your newly rooted, potted JM's in a translucent tote (the storage bins with lids/Walmart) and leave it outside in a part of your yard that has good light but is protected from high winds. Before placing your pots in the tote, make some drainage holes on the bottom of the tote, and also make some holes in the lid for air circulation. As long as the seedlings are cold hardy for your area, they'll do fine through the winter. Check to be sure they always have moisture (either through rain and snow through the air holes, or by you manually. They could easily die if they dry out. Also, they'll be dormant for most of the winter. I live just below you in Buffalo, NY, so I'm familiar with your winter concerns!

As long as the cuttings have some leaves or buds and alive, it may produce some roots but the root growth would be significantly slower

Could/should I put the cuttings in water and I have a Garden Rich Root Stimulator overnight? And then dip them in the rooting hormone powder tomorrow? I do not have a "Revitalizer" so i was wondering if the stimulator would serve a similar purpose or to just leave it in plain water overnight? Thanks:)

Either way works and I think the stimulator would help more. From my experience, it's more important to get the healthy cuttings, control the amount of leaf surface, stabilize them so they don't move easily, keep moisture and add some heat from the bottom. Good luck!

I recommend you keep them outside. These cuttings need sun light and humidity.

Can I keep a young bonsai maple outside in winter?

It depends on your climate and how "young" the tree is. However I would normally protect Japanese maple bonsai trees in an unheated greenhouse if the temperature goes below 0C/32F during the winter.

Where do you keep the container for the 6 months? Outdoors/indoors? Covered/uncovered? Shade?

Usually outdoors under shade/indirect sun.

@Stephen Hogan That's an interesting idea. I am actually using a plastic/transparent box to cover the pot with cuttings to keep moisture inside. Will find out if that helps soon :)

@John Statesman some worked, some didn't. For those that worked, I am keeping them in my greenhouse where the temp is kept above freezing point.

@John Statesman yes JMs need some dormancy period during the winter so they should be kept somewhere between 0-10c in general.

I have been using Akadama + peat moss (+ bark). I hear many people had success using small sized Kanuma soil.

I have been doing this every year and some of them rooted nicely. However, JMs are definitely harder to propagate from cuttings compared to Junipers/other plants.

Thanks for the response. It would be nice to see a video on some of your previous years japanese maple cuttings. I've stop trying to propagate jms from cutting. I've never had good luck. Airlayering is much more effective for me.

@@19regal83 I agree air layer is easier. I have some cuttings from last year that now have new leaves - will check if they have roots.

It's helpful to stimulate the cuttings to root but I know it could root without it :)

I use Akadama or pine bark as soil. I applied some powered rooting hormone to encourage rooting.

Hi! I got mine when I visited Japan. I am not sure if you can get it outside of Japan. However, you should be able to use a similar product that's readily available and get a good result as well!

Green ones are from Japanese maple 'Katsura' and the red ones are from Shin Deshojo.

Why cut the growing tip off

You could leave it but I usually cut it off as growing tip will try to take lots of energy/water out of the cutting which has no roots. Leaving a few developed leaves will efficiently work as a solar panel to produce sugar/nutrients and send it back to the bottom which helps stimulate roots to grow.
