Awesome!! Crimped element back together with a connector, and good to go now! Thanks Bill, this was a great help! Borrowed a multimeter from a co-worker, and quickly found out it was the heater. Took it out, found the break, and repaired it! I’m a diy guy, but never worked on a dryer, or tested circuits/used a multimeter before. I just finished doing this on my dryer. I'm ordering a new heating element to repair it completely. Also replacing a bunch of other stuff like belt and rollers while I'm in there. I had an idea I could somehow rig the heating element to get by till the parts came in. Your video is exactly what I was thinking about. I did it on mine and success! That gets the wife off my back till the parts come in and no rush. Thanks for posting.

Broken coil was definitely the cause of heater failure. I actually trouble shot backwards and pulled the coil first before testing the thermostats. Primarily because it was at the front and I wouldn't have to disassemble the whole dryer. The fix TOTALLY WORKED!!!! Thanks for the video!

So, since my dryer is about 10 years old, I had to do an extensive search to find a replacement heater at the best possible price, which turned out to be about 170 $. On top of that, I would have had to wait at least a month to receive it. I wondered if it was possible to simply repair it and the logical answer was yes, but I wanted to confirm. My initial thought was to hold the two ends together with solder, but your method is so much better and easier. Thank you so much for your video and thank God for the Internet!

I was beginning to crimp, when my inner voice of experience said to check for a video. Only difference in our repairs are that I gently used an abrasive stone to remove scale from the element ensuring a clean contact, and I am using two of the thick steel wire crimp connectors to double ensure a secure connection and avoid a hot spot. Excellent video, Bill! Thank You for providing a positive second opinion.

Hey Bill! I used this technique to repair my AEQ6000ES1 heater element, however, I didn't use a terminal lug, rather, I used a Butt Splice. I did remove the insulator prior to crimping on the element. I found a replacement on Amazon but will take a few days to get. I think I will order the replacement, but leave the "repaired" one in there for a while to see what happens. Thank you for the detailed and informational video!

Save that money and buy a new element. This cheap fix with soft connectors does not last long.
@user-ut9ln4vd5m
@user-ut9ln4vd5m 5 лет назад
@@owenprince4823 Nothing wrong with using a more permanent bolt-type connector, even just putting a hole or slot in a bolt & tightening a nut to clamp the two element ends together would be more permanent that just some bent steel
@owenprince4823
@owenprince4823 5 лет назад
@@user-ut9ln4vd5m I agree and that is what I did for myself. I made an eyelet with the element and then used a stainless steel bolt to lock the joint together and then welded it all together so it cannot work loose. That was for me but if I work on others I just use a new element. I have seen people use cheap aluminum crimp joints that work loose because the aluminum is too soft and gets softer when heated up.
@user-ut9ln4vd5m
@user-ut9ln4vd5m 5 лет назад
@@owenprince4823 That sounds really solid, the welding maybe even overkill. I'd be surprised if aluminum didn't almost melt, but googling I guess it's melting point is 1220F, while the nichrome that heating elements are made of is only a little higher ~1400F so that's relatively close
@windturbineusa3641

The shorter an element gets the hotter it makes the air and the more yellow it glows. Yup, you have to be very careful not to shorten it for sure! Thank you for the great tip. I have a Frigidaire oven that has some kind of a ribbon style lower heating element that burned out in a spot as if it were a fuse. I straightened out the two sections so that they overlapped and pinched the two sections together with a piece of electrical connector fairly tight with a vice grip. The ohm meter showed good conductivity so I reinstalled and presto, it appears to work just fine! If this holds up, we will have saved over $150. My wife rolled her eyes but She'll be happy if it works out.

Hey Bill, thanks for the input! fixed my element and my "non-resetable" fuze in my kenmore. However, like many of the comments, I found that if I'm going to use the low voltage aluminium connector for element repair, best to use the low setting in the heat. ( go figure). As I and others apparently found out, steel is the way to go. Thus, my point, I found using a spark plug connector, works much better. For those reading however, this is still as you said in your video A SHORT TERM FIX. Spend the 40.00 dollars , just Google it. thanks Bill!!!! satisfied viewer.

Yep, my mom's dryer, but I inherited it 7 months ago when she passed away just short of 97 years old, Dec 31, 2021, the same time you made this post. It just broke and I will use this technique to fix it. It's actually the only dryer she ever owned in her life, a Kenmore, something like a 1980 model, making it 42 years old. i have replaced the belt on it once and now a repair to the heating element. I know all modern washing machines are garbage, I'm not sure about the quality of modern $400 dryers. I will always keep this one for the rest of my life, repairing as needed.

I tried this repair and it worked great! I already ordered a replacement element, but it won't arrive for over a week. All this fix has to do is last a week.
