Aaron shows you how to repair the boot on a roof vent. These rubber boots fail, allowing water, ice, sleet, rain, and animals into your attic. This in turn can damage the structure, ceiling, and everything else. This fix is crazy easy to do. Yes, Aaron went crazy with the Henry's. :)

Glad it helped. Note - I need to update my video to not put the roof caulking under the original vent sheet to allow for water to flow. See the comments for more info.

Great video, but wouldn't recommend using any caulking/adhesive on the bottom where our product touches the existing flashing. If the caulk starts to deteriorate on top before it does on bottom it will let water come under the Perma-Boot but will have no where to run out the bottom.

Thanks for the help :) I have buys of my house that we’re throwing a tantrum over this issue on our roof after in inspection, claiming this was a $1500 issue. Thanks for the cheap and easy fix

Glad I could help! Wow, even if you pulled some shingles and replaced the whole thing, $1500 is quite expensive.
@CSWells-uq4jx
@CSWells-uq4jx 3 года назад
@@ALinsdau yeah. It’s obvious they are just trying to talk us down after the inspection because they came to us saying they want a total of $20,000 off what they offered towards repairs. I’ve priced the repairs myself, and it’s like $5000 total, if that. They are just blowing smoke in my opinion. That would be a excessive amount to ask for in a buyers market, and it is very much not a buys market right now where I’m at.

Since it is plastic it is not likely a permanent repair, but should last quite a few years and would be easy to replace.

Surprised you caulked it to the shingle at on high side, rather than cutout some of the shingle so it's caulked to the previous flange underneath. Seems like the shingles can tear or life, and caulking to is not as reliable as to the flange beneath.

So far, so good. I've gone up on the roof and it looks perfect. The plastic (ABS?) seems to be holding up perfectly. There isn't any rubber to go bad on it.

I mounted one on my roof about 10 years ago and checked it a few months back and it was in perfect. I live in South Carolina and we have some pretty brutal summers. Purchased 3 more and finished installing on my other vents. These boots are great inventions. Only possible issue (that I saw mentioned somewhere) is that these do reduce the id of the vent pipe. It caused no issues with me.

Cheap flimsy plastic, seems to fit only short pipes. I found you can also buy just the rubber collar and slide it over the old one with plenty of adhesive will be good enough until roof is replaced in few years.

Plastic fails to UV radiation, but I think if it was painted it would be ok.

Never use Wet Patch to caulk around this perma boot. Use a high quality roof caulking only. The wet patch will eat into the plastic of the perma boot. I found out. Don’t take my word for it, this is per a roofing contractor.

I have a hard time believing that the new boot won't blow off. Shingles have nails, flashing has nails, drip edge has nails and vent boots have nails all for a reason.

perhaps with the adhesive on the top cap, put down into the pipe and fit snugly, that is a sturdy exception that those other methods aren't in position to employ.

Nope, opening at the top is smaller then the vent pipe, it creates a place for wasps to make a nest, and it's not secured to the roof. I just replaced two 3" roof flashings at my father in laws less than $10 each, yes I had to loosen up some shingles and put some tar under them when I put them back in place but I won't have to do it again in my lifetime

Squirrels love to eat lead because it tastes sweet. Lots of squirrel damage to lead flashings, just check RU-vid. Agree with your point about plastic, basically because of UV damage, but I think if it was painted it would be ok.
