These step-by-step instructions and video explain a water pump replacement on a 2003 Chevy Avalanche 1500, and will be similar to replacement procedures on Chevy Avalanche 1500 models from 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. The replacement procedures will also be similar for select Chevy Silverado 1500 models from 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007, Chevy Silverado 2500 models from 1999 to 2006, and Chevy Silverado 3500 models from 2001 to 2006, as well as Cadillac Escalade models from 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 equipped with a V8 Vortec engine. Replacing a damaged or failing water pump can help your truck’s engine stay cool, and can improve engine performance. If you notice your truck is leaking coolant, overheating, or if you see steam from underneath the hood, you should inspect and replace your Avalanche’s water pump to prevent engine overheating.

Your Chevy Avalanche 1500’s water pump is a crucial part of your engine’s cooling system. Your truck’s water pump moves coolant throughout the engine to keep it within normal operating temperatures and to prevent it from overheating. Replacing a faulty or failing water pump on your 2003 Chevy Vortec 5.3-liter V8 engine is a straightforward repair that can help ensure your truck’s cooling system is functioning properly. If you need to replace your truck’s water pump, you may see coolant leaks underneath the middle-front of your vehicle, steam coming from under the hood, the bearing in the water pump could fail, or your Chevy may overheat. A sign that the water pump pulley is about to fail includes hearing a squeaking sound coming from the water pump pulley. It is important to replace a failing water pump as soon as possible to prevent your truck from overheating and causing engine damage. Our step-by-step instructions will help you perform a water pump replacement on your Chevy Avalanche.

Start by parking on a level surface… letting the vehicle cool… and disconnecting the negative battery cable.
Slowly rotate the surge tank fill cap counterclockwise.
Stop rotating and allow the hissing to stop.
After all hissing stops, continue turning counterclockwise to remove the cap.
Put a drain pan in place… and open the petcock.
Allow the system to drain completely.
Close the radiator petcock.
Loosen the air cleaner outlet duct clamps at the throttle body… and mass airflow/intake air temperature sensor.
Remove the radiator inlet hose clip from the outlet duct.
Then remove the air cleaner outlet duct.
Take off the engine cover by loosening the intake manifold sight shield bolt.
Remove the cover from the cover retainer.
Then remove the cover retainer bolts and the retainer, if required.
Detach the radiator vent inlet hose from the radiator hose clips.
Loosen the inlet hose clamp and remove the inlet hose from the water pump.
If equipped, remove the throttle body heater hose retainer and the inlet radiator hose retainer from the fan shroud.

I like the video, however my leak is coming from the oring located under the silver circular plate on the back of the pump. On some chevys there are bolts securing this plate but on my 2006 there are no bolts. Do I pry the cover off or I'm I over looking something ?

While you're there might wanna clean the throttle body and perform a relearn procedure on that. Also if you top the coolant off and you have heat from the vents at idle. You do not have air pocket in the cooling system. Great videos though. Thank you

Can you wire brush the block when the pump meets the block? I’m seeing everyone use a razor blade? I’m not sure I’m getting a good seal, I put the pump on then started leaking as I was pouring in antifreeze, I used silicone and the paper gasket I’m guessing that’s my issue I’m redoing the job with metal gaskets and no silicone

Why do I need to disconnect the negative battery cable? When putting gasket sealant for pump and thermostat, what is the best way? Sealant on pump side only or both sides of gasket for pump and thermostat?
@brianshipp411
@brianshipp411 2 года назад
For this you would put any sealant anywhere. This is an assembly replacement and they come with gaskets

Does the idler pulley have bearings and can these bearings go bad I have another so winning noise and not so screeching noise I guess you would call it howling noise but I tested each pull-on the front of engineand only one pully was hot the idler pulls by old school testing by stick I determined the idler pulls is possibly the culprit my question is can these go bad and if so what does that mean about the water pump should I replace both or just the one
@buzztrucker

Make sure you get a mechanics stethoscope to be sure that's where the problem is I had my problem on the power steering pump pulley. The bearing had went bad and I was getting a terrible whining noise especially during cold days in the morning when I started my truck. As for your question... I believe that they do have bearings on the idler pulleys. I think you can pop it out on the idler pulley but don't quote me on that however idler pulleys are so cheap anyway you're better off just replacing the whole thing and saving the time and frustration.

Too bad you don’t sell the paper style gaskets separate from the pump.
