Just did this job last week. The shaft my friction wheel rides on was very difficult to reinstall. That large chain has very little slack in it it is not easy to pull out the slack either, that's one thick chain! But with some patience and this excellent vid I prevailed! Thanks Don for making such clear easy to follow videos. This is your livelihood and all your trade secrets, yet your willing to share it all with us unselfishly. That says a lot about what kind of a guy you are! Thanks for all you do!
Just changed the friction disc on my Murray 29” blower. I’m not that handy at doing this type of work but this video made it a piece of cake. Thank you so much. Best video to follow that I’ve ever seen.👏👏
My Craftsman is 31" and has a Tecumseh 11 HP engine. I am the 3rd owner of this machine that was built in 2002. Just finished the job and I followed your excellent instructions. I had two issues. The first one was a worn friction disc. The other problem was that the bracket that grabs the friction disc assembly had come off and that was the cause of not being able to control the speeds, whether forward or reverse. What was missing were the two washers on the upper and lower arms of the bracket. Everything works perfectly now. Thank you so very much.
You're a lifesaver!!!!. I had no idea how to do this until now. You're very thorough and very thoughtful . Thank you for your great invaluable youtube video.
Hello, I sent you a comment into another video about a Craftsman snowblower. At that time I told you the video was not matching my snowblower, but I found this video and it is the exact same transmission I have into my machine. I’m very happy that I found it, and of course, you made it! I will definitely replace the friction disk even if it is not cracked, based on what you said on part one of this video. Now I’m more confident replacing the part myself. Will go to local store to buy the part. If you still wish to see the picture I was talking about into my previous comment, just let me know, I’ll sent you a link. Thank you so much doing that video, I’m sure it’s going to save me lot of money! Best Regards, Yanick
Great! Now I know why I'm pushing the snowblower rather than letting it pull me :) I'm going to fix this thing first thing in the morning! BTW, this is one of the better repair videos I've seen on RU-vid!
Great video and timely as I just did mine a couple days ago as we were getting a 6" snow dump. I found it best (for me, anyhow) to remove the engine to prevent gas and oil leakage. There are only four 5/16" bolts holding it down. Additionally, could not remove the wheels due rust on a 30+ year old unit. Other then being a very dirty job, it went well. I also replaced all bolting and installed tubes in the tires - which with them in place on the axle was more of a project then the friction disc. Happy flinging snow again!
Dony You are the supreme being of small engine repair. I have learnt so much from you. I'm retired from a tech building systems career but have built a new career doing small engine repair and you have been instrumental in helping me build this business beyond what I expected or even targeted. I have over 150 repeat business customers; all without advertising. What is great about you is that you take the extra effort to add in all the helpful tips on not only how to do it but how to make it easier. Using grease for example to hold the washers in place. Thanks so much for being you! How can I contribute to your channel
Thanks for another informative video Donny! I have an 11 horse 30in Craftsman/MTD with a similar friction disk-clutch set up. It currently will not go into all the gears because the trunnion clutch assembly is missing the washers and is slipping out of the forks. I really hate this "washer" set up and have gone as far as tapping hole in the trunnion clutch assembly using a 5/16" -18 tap (no drilling needed) and tap out the hollow hole( where washers go under the forks to keep them from slipping out. I should also consider changing the friction disk, but someone should create a retro-fit for the washer set up that wont allow the trunion clutch to fall out.
4:15 lol I was just waiting you touch that squeaky clean disc ;) excellent job as usual. don is not a pro, he's uberpro. look at him he repairs mowers with one hand ... and the other hand holds the camera just for us suckers here on youtube. he's the king ;)
The bolt on the axle on my Murry Snowblower keeps breaking ! Why ? I replaced the friction wheel . Thanks donyboy , could not have done this without you teaching me how . Thanks very much. Joe
Great Video, thanks. I have a Noma, similar set-up. The trouble is that the forks that move the disc that in turn respond to the speed selector will not stay on the disc mechanism with the ears/nipples. I noticed that you had two washers one on each ear/nipple. Perhaps that is the missing ingredient, mine does not have any washers. Generally what has happens is that I get the forks reattached and they come disconnected at the furthest from the center are of the contact disc (the disc that the friction wheel comes in contact with). Then I am back to square one. I'll try a couple of washers and see if that doesn't tighten things up. Otherwise I am driving in forward at high speed all the time. Thanks again, I have viewed many of your vids...you do a professional level presentation. tim
@donyboy73 it's been a constant zero for a couple of weeks now. had snow once or twice this winter. winters are awful here, lots of humidity, lots of road salt and snow melts quickly because temps aren't that stable. I would trade our winter for a canadian one in a glimpse. fortunately temps will rise up to 10 or 15 in a course of a month. at the moment I spent most of the time tidying up my workspace and then making a complete mess in a day or two with random small projects lol ;)
this video was a classic.....excellent job donyboy hey dony how long should these friction disc last....i think i`am beating the crap out of my machine had a lot of rubber on the disc and it`s only in the first season?
Donyboy good video, I happen to have a snow chief track drive made by nova many year ago, I just want to know if you have any idea on where it goes the big thick spacer I have two of them thad I don't recall where I removed them from, I was cleaning all the rust that it was preventing my gears from moving, but in the process, I did not recall where these two big washer are from, I did everything you did in this two videos but I see that there is no big washer here or spacers because this one's are about 1/2 inch thick, I also want to replace one of the chains on one of the sprockets but how do I remove the whole shaft since the sprocket is welded to the shaft, now I also want to point it out that this SNOW CHIEF BLOWER it have DRIVE TRACKS intead of normal Wheels, so the re is two shaft but the one iam having problems with is the one that drive, the one thad have the sprocket, is the one that have the chain, and the one with the welded sprocket to the shaft, so I don't have enough space to get it out, I try a chain linkage removal tool I use on my kids bicycle but this chain is to thick, DO YOU THINK I NEED TO GO BUY A DIFFERENT CHAIN LINK REMOVAL TOOL? can you please help me, and also if you have a way to get a manual for this type of machine,I have search on line but nothing comes up, please help me, iam one fan of your videos congratulations, you do make good and informative videos, thank you so much, now I don't do this for living, I just like to work on my on equipment, thank you again, have a good and wonderful day
WOW, so hard to post a short question! Any ideas on whay my friction disc is leaving rubber on the drive disc? I also want to put a larger engine on it as it bogs down with wet or deep snow. The neighbor has a 10 hp with the same size of blower and it works great under the same conditions. The problem is I have 2 drive belts turning in the opposite directions and can only find single shaft engines. Any idea where I might get a 2 shaft engine for less than a new blower?
Greasing my auger on my Murray snowblower. I currently have synthetic red grease and I find it hardens in cold temp and I was thinking that there might be something better out there... Martin
Great explanation. The chain and cogs can get kinked up and add an hour of cussing before all the bushings line up. Ereplacement Part #: 1501435MA delivers for $43.
I have a 1989 5/23 with treads. The friction wheel had a crack in it so it skipped a lot. After installing a new friction wheel, it worked great for 5 minutes but rubber from the wheel transfered to the metal disc causing the wheel to stick to it and not stop when I release the handle. Scrape the disc clean and it's ok for 5 minutes. I can get it to work longer if I spray graphite powder on the friction wheel. It slipps badly for a minute then is ok for 15 to 20 minutes. Then it starts over. ???
Could you tell me what kind of Shell Grease you use with your grease gun? I can`t remember what video you were talking about Shell ``grey`` grease... Thanks
My Murray blower is having the same issue. There seems to be lots of friction wear left on the wheel, yet it won't consistently drive the wheels. The friction wheel will come against the engine wheel fine, yet not move. I also found on the ground a light spring 3 1/2" long x 1/2" wide. Any idea where this spring came from? The issue happened even before it dropped the spring
Great Video Thanks the friction wheel install went great. Now when i use 6 th speed there is a clunking noise . All the rest of the gears run fine. Including the 2 reverse. Any suggestions on getting the 6 th speed back to normal? Thanks
Have you ever had the complaint that the friction wheel component keeps falling out of the gearshift fork arrangement? I have had that problem with 2 machines that I have. I can't find a video anywhere on the internet which addresses that specific problem.
My setup had gears and was 10 times easier to change out than this. The thing I noticed when I took it apart is the bushings were wore out and slotted, it's a old unit that I didn't want to put money into so I just rotated the bushings 180 and the tire grabs the friction plate perfectly now. (it will do burn outs now) lol
I have similar snow blower but it has track. I have problem that the friction wheel hub doesn’t stay in U sharp. I notice that every time snow blower hit a hard snow bank then the hub gets loose. I don’t have speed control any more. Yes, I have both washers when I install the friction wheel assembly back to U sharp that connect to speed controller. Do you have idea bout for to fix it? I am really appreciating your help. Thanks.
I replaced my friction disc ... when I put it in gear 1 through 5 it clears the plate but when I put it in reverse it makes contact with the plate so when I have it in reverse it moves without me pressing the lever to engage it
