How To Run a Compression Test on an Engine Out of the Car - Honda & Acura

Are you considering buying an engine that's already been pulled from a car? In this video I show you have to run a compression test on that engine. This method will specifically work for most late model Honda Civics/Accords/CRX and Acura Integras from 88-00.
I also test the thermostat from this same engine to see if it is opening as it should to further inspect it for a future install.

Great general info! I'm working on an early 90's Toyota Land Cruiser and was just gifted a "running when pulled" engine. This is perfect to help me figure out if the claimed low mileage and good running status mean I can just do a refresh or if I should do the full rebuild. Thanks man!

civic GL (1987) overheating issue, firstly my problems was the engine drinking water on a 100mile journey, I put this down to headgasket, I have changed the cam belt,water pump,thermostat ,headgasket,heater matrix, the car now overheats going over 50mph, there's a lot of bubbles coming to the filler neck, the radiator looks really rusty, thats the only thing I haven't changed, also I have hot n cold heaters, which means headgasket, does this mean engine is no good?.
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 6 лет назад
It's possible. People will experience overheating issues when there is still air in the system. You could try doing a coolant flush to help remove some of the rust and corrosion inside the engine. Maybe you have a partially blocked passage which is creating the overheating issue.
@lsvtech21
@lsvtech21 6 лет назад
Nice video bro, bit if I'm not wrong, don't you suppose to open the throttle wide open while the engine is cranking?
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 6 лет назад
Thsts a great question, one I'm not sure of the exact answer. You know, I always do that when it's in the car, but out I don't. You could hold the throttle body open but it hasn't made a difference for me when checking. I read about people getting low readings not holding the throttle open when in the car and getting a completely different reading holding it open. I say try it both ways if you're getting readings that are out of wack.

I have a question, I’ve tried to do a compression test in my CRX (D16A8 or ZC) and even if my battery was at 13.6v without the engine on, the starter started to make the noise as if the battery was dead after 2/3 seconds of compression test... do you think it’s a faulty starter motor ? Thank you and keep up with your excellent videos !
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 6 лет назад
It sounds like it might be at fault. My battery lasted a while and it hasn't been in a car since January. I had to use jumpers to get more power though but it still powered through. And thanks for watching, I love the support!

Cold are fine too. It'll give you a general idea of each cylinder and the variance between cylinders helping to determine if the engine is still in good shape.

I need to do this test on my jdm Subaru motor I received recently, it’s still outside the car. My motor is empty, has no oil now. Noob question: Should I fill up the motor with oil to the max mark or this test can be done with the motor half way full? Great video btw!

@@GarageBuiltHondas One last question, my motor doesn’t have a flywheel, only a flex plate since it’s an automatic. How will the starter motor turn the motor without teeth to hook on? And I removed everything on the motor, only have the bare block & heads with exhaust manifold snd some vacuum hoses attached. I even removed the turbo. Can I perform a compression and leak down test on an engine this way?
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas Год назад
You'll need the auto torque converter bolted to the flex plate. That's what has the teeth on it.

What is normal compression for one of these motors?
@ricardocasalkam
@ricardocasalkam 6 лет назад
anything up from 140psi consistently through the cylinders.
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 6 лет назад
Agree, usually between 140-185 is normal and it really depends on the compression tester gauge and some may have different readings. What's important is that they are all within 10% variance of one another and these were pretty readings across all 4.
