How to Setup Canon DSLR Audio Levels

How to setup manual audio levels on a Canon DSLR (60D, 70D, T5i, etc). ► All the gear is linked below.
To get the best audio from your Canon DSLR or any other DSLR for that matter, you need to take control over the settings and then set them up properly to get the best levels.
On the Canon 60D, 70D and other Canon DSLR cameras with manual audio control, you'll notice one specific level, -12db. You may also notice that this level is marked by a green LED underneath it. This is marked this way because it's the best place to try and get your audio levels.
When you get levels around -12db, you'll have enough room for your audio (the person speaking) to get loud without peaking the audio meter and distorting your audio.
You'll also have levels that are high enough to masked a normal noise floor (background noise) while being able to bring the audio into post production and raise the level to proper audio standards for the web (-16LUFS for stereo, -19LUFS for mono) without introducing a significant amount of noise (hiss).
Go into your camera's audio settings, on a Canon they are in the menu under Sound Recording. Set this to Manual. Then go to Rec. level and scroll the marker all the way to the left which will turn the audio off.
Next, talk normally into your microphone while raising the audio level until you see the audio meter start to get to -12db. I like to see my levels just starting to turn the audio meters yellow which is just past -12db.
If you have a good microphone that is sensitive enough without producing any of its own noise, then you should be able to raise your level to around 25% of the gain without introducing too much noise from the Canon's preamp. Ideally you'll be able to run your audio gain on the Canon even lower. The less you have to turn up the level on your 60D/70D the less hiss the camera will produce in your audio.

Great audio how-to Ray! I'm finally upgrading my video/audio setup and this was very helpful! Been shooting with a sony nex 3n(and point and shoot) but now finally getting something with external mic capabilities and a little more flexibility for video. Thanks! Joe

my t6i still procudes a small self noise, its pretty frustrating, do you have a video on how to delete the noise in editing? im using final cut pro
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 7 лет назад
I don't have a video but FCPX has some noise reduction built in. Don't use too much and it should work nicely. Also if you have a mic that allows you to control the gain, increase the mic's gain so you can turn down the preamp on the DSLR, that will give you cleaner audio. Or you can look at processing your audio externally and try Auphonic.com

I have the RODE Video Mic Pro and for some reason it's only recording audio through the right channel. I have a Canon T6i and i don't know if its the camera or the mic. Do you know how to fix this issue?
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 5 лет назад
Yeah that's odd. I mean the input is stereo and mics are mono however the RVP has a dual mono plug so it should put the audio on both sides of the T6i's stereo track. Are you actually using the Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro amzn.to/2DxxP60. That might make more sense as to what is going on. If so, then this is the actual mic you wanted amzn.to/2DxuHr2. However you can correct the issue in the editor. Depending on what you are using (FCPX, Premiere, etc) there will be an option to put the audio into mono or place the left side onto the right (vice versa).

Hey Ray! Help! I bought a Canon 80D and a Rode VideoMic Pro+ and I am only getting audio recorded on the L channel (mono?). How do I make my camera record through my Rode mic in stereo? What am I missing?
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 5 лет назад
Jake, it sounds like you might have a special feature turned on that is new to the VMP+. It's a safety channel which means it records a lower signal to the right channel to protect against overload. Press the power button and DB+/- button at the SAME time to turn it on/off. The little green LED between the two buttons will light when it's on. Try that. Any video recorded that way is easy to fix in post, just select the left channel and duplicate it to the right however the software you are using does that.

Ray, thank you very much for your detailed video that is well explained and effective! I was so disappointed when I tried out my new Canon M50 camera with the Rode VideoMic Go. At the camera default setting of 75 for "Rec. level" there was noticeable hissing sound throughout my entire indoor test videos in a quiet room. The same default setting turned out much worse outdoors in a noisy environment. Based on your useful advice (and possibly mixed in with other advice), I got great indoor results from the following new video settings: Sound recording on Manual instead of Auto. Rec Level down to about 35 instead of the camera default of 75. Wind filter changed to Disable. Attenuator changed to Enable. Wifi setting changed to Disable (Bluetooth also on Disable). I just shot a new indoor test video with the above new settings and Rode mic and there was no detectable hissing nor humming noise! I'm so pleased I could spit LOL! I subscribed and liked your video!

This was really helpful and to the point! The closest I’ve gotten to my answering my question! I’m using a standard rode mic in my canon t71 and I’m having trouble setting my noise reduction levels. My voice finally sounds clear using this mic (along with the dead cat) but when I imported the files into my Mac I can hear what I think is wind noise or just static and a lot of it ! My room is very quiet so I’m not sure what I can do! I may be using the settings and levels incorrectly ! Please help!

Hey brother, great video 👍I thought I’d ask your advice. My last video I posted today on my channel has the noise from the birds in the background and one of my subscribers just gave me this feedback however I don’t know how to fix it. I’m using a brand new Eos m3 with a new Rode VideoMig-go. A legal mic will get in the way with my videos so that’s why I choose a good quality shotgun mic instead. Did I make the wrong choice or can I fix this for future videos?
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 6 лет назад
If you're outside, birds are just part of the audio. The only things you can do to reduce background "noise" would be to turn the mic away from the noise so that the mic rejects more background and/or get closer so that you use less gain

Wow that's painful;) Sounds like it starts around 3:18 but not sure what that is. I know that mic is not very good. Rode is a good brand but that mic sucks. What would you suggest when filming in a stadium with PA announcements, blaring music and crowds cheering when my talent has to talk over all that? We travel the country making video blogs from MLB ballparks. Auto at that point or still manual but lower? I’m using a Canon 80 D with a sennhieser M400 shotgun mic. The mic has + and - on it. I use - to not blow out the sound from crowd noise. But I’m hesitant to go low on manual because if we do a talking segment away from speakers and crowds, it will be too low. Is there a setting that will work in all outdoor stadium environments? Thanks for your help and making great videos!
