One thing I’m dealing with is small trees that have just come up on their own around my property and now they are too big for me to take down. I had such a soft spot for trees and wanted to just let them all grow. Well, that’s nice but dumb. Lol. Now they are shading my lilacs so they barely bloom and it looks scruffy and bad. I still love trees but you have to stay on top of everything that tries to take root and be choosy about what you let grow. I’m almost 69 and it’s just not fun work anymore. Thanks for this video Becky. It really is very important. ❤️🌳🌱🪵🌲
Hi Becky. I keep looking for new videos and haven't seen anything for a few months. I really enjoy your passion for homesteading and desire to share that with others. Hope you are ok. Missing your videos.
Hello Becky... I am desperately searching to find out if YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR HOME AND YOUR ANIMALS ARE ALL OK??? Im sure you have so much going on at this time but i wish there was another way your concerned viewers could check in on you. Im 🙏 🙏 🙏 Praying that you and your family and farm family are all safe and well. Sending Love💖and hugs and 🙏 your way my dear🥰💖🥰💖💖from your inspired fan in ORegon!
Hello Becky, Love your videos!❤. But are you ok, after Hurricane Ian hit Florida? Very worried about you, your son and your wonderful farm! Hope everything’s alright down there. Diane, from California 🙏💕🙏🥰🤗
I'm so glad I encountered you again. You are simply an awesome person and awesome woman. God bless you. I miss following your channel. To my surprise when I encountered you again I was already subscribed.
This is such good advice, Becky. In 1998 I bought 5 acres on a millpond. 2 acres in pasture & 3 in hardwoods. Over the years the beech, hickory & oaks have grown ginormous. The oldest shed big limbs & branches, which after a big wind must be cleared, cut up for firewood or burned. And let’s not talk about the amount of leaves in fall! I’ve also had to limb up dozens of trees to keep my view of the pond open, as I love watching the wildlife the pond attracts. Just as we age, so do the trees. Disease, wind, parasites, cavity nesting birds & drought all take a toll.
I love how all the older trees on my property bring birds from everywhere. The understory keeps them well fed. Deer appreciate the shelter and food. But, it is a challenge to keep the saplings from taking over. I do select what stays and what doesn’t. Thanks for sharing for the new homesteaders.
Thank you for posting this. I'd never considered an arborist before, but it sounds much better for the 100+ year old trees on the old family farm that need help than cutting them down.
Your cabin is so beautiful! Colors really pop in there!! I hope you are doing well. I'm a few weeks away from listing my city house. I dream of a smaller quieter home environment.
Thank you for this video Becky! This is something that is often overlooked or not thought about. To those home hunting, also take a look at the neighbors tree situation on either side of a property you may be interested in. I see this often. If neighbors don't trim their trees or have dead ones, it could end up doing damage to your property and it's a hazard to people or animals as well. As a fire safety issue never have trees or shrubs too close to your home either. It's like leaving matches all around your home.
Thanks BEAUTIFUL Becky, for another practical 'heads up' vid! Trees give us soOOOoo much, that I too ache when I C one come down 4 no 'apparent'/ good reason. We think we R 'saving money' when we skip consulting an arborist, but their info is 'priceless'. We had a humungus silver leaf willow close 2 our home and it was GORGEOUS, but when a storm came round...she dropped branches like rain. An arborist helped us to trim and 'enjoy' our lovely willow without fear. U R 'right on the money' with this homestead tip. Health and God Bless! ")
Thank you for this video. We have 7 big sycamore trees on our property. They are great shade trees but very messy andin storms thier branches seem to come down easier than other trees. They will be expensive to take down, but with your advice, will callan aborhist for other possible options.
Have you ever noticed that a walnut , carefully planted by you, never comes up? The Squirrels can "plant" them, and they come up every time! I have to do a Spring Search every year for unwanted nut trees. It makes a nice day actually. I take a 5 gallon bucket and a small shovel. There are Walnuts, Hickory, Oak and young Beech trees. I do a search starting near the house. We have a lot of big Oak trees. I go under any power lines. Several of the young trees are replanted out in our woods, As replacements for older trees. We do leave, out in the woods, the older trees for the Owls and Woodpeckers. I love all the Birds! We don't have a large lawn to mow. We have a lot of shade! We put up bird houses and feeders. Did you know that the small Woodpeckers will drink from a Hummingbird feeder?! GOD bless
Thanks for this video. I get so sad to see how people amputate trees, It is heartbreaking. One of my horses is a tree chewer. Are you in the path of that storm?
hi Becky we would like you to show us what kind of plants you have and how you harvest them. and if your hens benefit from eating them. please . God give you his blessings❤
Please people make sure your arborist knows what they are doing...we had a tree service come to trim some very large trees and he has an arborist working with him...and we purposely had them do our trees so it would keep limbs from falling....within a year we had more limbs come down taking our chicken coop and chicken porch ruined and hubby had yo repair our chicken coop...so please watch who you higher....we now do our own trees trimming !
She has a FB post from Dec 22 so it sounds like she is fine-probably just busy. I was getting worried about her too since she hadn't posted since right before the hurricane so I checked FB
Becky pls 🙏 I need advice. A couple weeks back I had my 19 yr old son care for my 9 hens while I was away for 10 days. When I got home I immediately could tell he had forgotten them in their coop for at least one of those 90 degree days. They had either plucked their own feathers or eachothers. Im devastated!! They don't have actual bald spots because the stem of the feather is still there but the feather part has been broken off in spots. What can I do to help them? I live in Oregon so the temp has dropped in those 2 weeks. My girls do fine in their unheated coop through our winters & even lay all winter for me, but im worried about them being warm enough with those patches of broken off feathers. Please any advice is greatly appreciated. I did get them some black oil sunflower seeds and am going to get whole corn for them as well, I haven't been able to find grain free chicken free cat food get so I've just been adding a little of the seed to their regular chicken feed for now.
Becky this is off topic but I'm asking for your help. I have been feeding my chickens with the whole corn oats and black oilseed. But they refuse to eat the oats they will eat everything else but they eat around the oats can you give me a substitute I could get at my farm store?
I don't live in the consumer rat race. Alone...I moved to the Blue Ridge mountains in 2018. My name is Darla. I'm almost 74 yrs old. May GOD richly bless you.
I'm genuinely curious. Since your full time job is your homestead, how are you coming up with the thousands of dollars it costs to do these large projects?
@makeupgirl888, My question, too. Becky, it sounds like the priorities and planning need to be rearranged when looking to purchase a homestead site. Is the arborist the first person to consult?
Hey Becky I have a question In the very beginning you said u cut down the trees on ur land and it helped with paying for it How did u get permission to cut down the trees from the owner? We’re up to that stage now
Quick question for you - I tried finding a public email for you but didn’t succeed. Log cabin question: size, company and cost? I did find a nice log cabin company but it isn’t inexpensive, and I assume yours was conservatively priced since you’ve been trying to do everything for cash/debt free.
Does anybody know her full name and where she lives? I think Florida but not really sure. At this point I'm really worried that something has happened to her. Facebook pictures of animals posted just doesn't cut it with me. I hope anyone who knows her personally will make a comment on her well being.
CITY PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN ABOUT COUNTRY LIFE BEFORE MOVING OUT IN THE COUNTRY. Like in all things there is a progression in how and when to do things to be able to optimize future benefits.
Do not vaccinate your chickens. When they get vaccinated, the chicken still gets the disease, but the vaccine prevents the symptoms from showing up, but they still spread the disease to other chickens. It's better to not get them vaccinated so that if they get the disease, they can die and stop spreading it around to other chickens.
Frankly, I think something's wrong. And the animal and flower photos in FB aren't reassuring to me. Even if her homestead was in ruins after storms or floods, she would be commenting here, by now. Even if her animals died (worst case scenario, of course). She is a polite and caring person. Known for replying to comments.
my parents house was hit my their neighbors tree. this was an "act of nature" if you are concerned about this, a certified letter must be sent to the neighbor. look into this. this has wreaked havick on them.
During a huge windstorm, a tree in my yard landed on my neighbors house. My neighbors insurance actually paid for it because it was an act of nature. I sure as heck didn't push that tree over :-)
Questions: Do you do giveaways of channel branded stickers? I am collecting all the channels I am subscribed to so that I can make a collage and frame it to put on my livingroom wall. If not do you have a store where I can buy it?
