How To Wash an Electronic Air Cleaner, Cleaning a Honeywell EAC Filter. How often? Every Season

Most people have already turned the heat on. If you have an Electronic Air Cleaner, or washable filter, you should check it and wash it if necessary. A lot of home owners have asked us how they can do this themselves and we took a video to show you the steps. It's a long and detailed video so you will need several minutes to watch it, because it answered a lot of the questions we get on a regular basis.
Please let us know if we missed something or if you have additional questions!

My dad was an HVAC Engineer for years, so that's why he had an EAC installed in our current house. When he first instructed me on how to clean them, he didn't include the part about the degreaser or what the red button does...just the water. I thought I'd double check how to clean them on youtube. Thank you for the thorough cleaning tutorial.
@cleanairheatingcooling4105
@cleanairheatingcooling4105 Год назад
I appreciate the kind remarks. The degreaser is useful because the dust in the home contains oils from cooking and other contaminants which are not washable with water alone that's why I like the greaser we'll take care of this so when you reinstall the cells they are perfectly clean and ready to collect more fine particles.

In 1972, my parents had a house built. The furnace had a Honeywell electronic air cleaner. I am dumbfounded to see that the cells and prefilters look exactly the same in this video as in the 70’s/80’s and beyond. As kids, we were amused by pressing the spark button just for kicks! 50 years later, I am convinced the Honeywell units are still the best. In 2020, my wife and I had a new heat pump and air handler installed. We got talked into buying the whole solution from the same manufacturer. With what I know now, I should have bought a Honeywell from another contractor. The fitration media system works well but when I ordered a replacement filter (as thick as a honeywell cell), I totally got sticker shock! The replacement filter was about 145$ CDN. If I figure the system will last 20 years, that’s 24 filter changes, every 10 months or so. That means 3500$ spent on new filters (not counting price increases and inflation) and 24 soiled filters going to landfill. Granted the Honeywell system is MERV 11 and the one I have is MERV 16, I think overall the Honeywell is a great value and more ecological. BTW, my parents washed their filters and cells in the dishwasher with the drying cycle on. in 36 years , they never had any issues using this cleaning method.
@cleanairheatingcooling4105
@cleanairheatingcooling4105 2 года назад
Totally agree! The electronic filters have been one of the best solutions in may decades. I could say based on personal experience, feedback from home owners and testing data that the MERV 16 filters are a great solution for people who have conslcernsneorh respiratory conditions. The electronic filters only go so far. But if there are no specific concerns with micro particles the EAC is one of the best long term solutions.

I've had Honeywells since the late '60's. I use the bathtub method and use the strong blast from my handheld sprayer with all hot water to first rinse everything. Then I lay them down, close the tub and add my 1-1/2 c detergent and let them soak. I found a really soft bottle brush and I use it to clean the fins and wires. Sometimes, I even clean them with my hands. I want them clean when I have to put them back in the attic! They are GREAT!

I did, however, wash all four. I had a little snafu after drying the two cell units. One ionized wire came off. I used your video to service my air conditioner and man what a mess. I don't think it's been clean for a year. Great points! I should have mentioned all that! I guess my idea at the time was more focused on how to do the cleaning alone. If I get started on what could lead to poor performance of an air conditioner I wouldn't know where to start. I'd never finish either. Lol. But I could make a video on what to check if there when an AC or furnace doesn't perform well. Maybe a list if ten most common things we find.

Thanks for posting a most informative and concise video. I have two question. If I use the dishwasher can I just use regular dishwasher soap and run a complete cycle? If still wet, can i use a portable hand dryer to expedite drying? Can I just soak in a laundry tub with soap and let sit for a while. Then rinse throroughly?
@severcrompton7421
@severcrompton7421 3 года назад
I washed in a laundry tub as I couldn't fit both in the dishwasher. Soaked in tub thoroughly and repeated process. Also, the prescreens were done the same way and also used a scrub brush lightly. Rinsed in a tub of water thoroughly. Then rinsed in the stand up shower with shower head and set to dry. I went over with a hand held hand dryer to ensure dryness.
@SqueakyHinge
@SqueakyHinge Год назад
I carry a plastic tub that I got from Target or KMart to lay down the filters so they can soak in Simple Green. Then I go back to the maintenance and/or repairs. About half way through the Maint/Repair I remove the EAC's, shake them off then put them back into the rack, which should have plastic locks in the base so the cells will only go in the correct way. I leave the power pack off cause the cells are still wet but turn on the fan which will dry them out fairly quickly. Then I go back to maint/repairs, finish then check the cells for dryness. If dry the power pack is turned back on and tested. I never use any chemical cleaner which leave the metal bright and shiny as than means metal has been removed. I also ask the owner to look at the soaking cells and they typically will see a coat of black oil floating on the top of the water. I explain to them that is the oil in the air from planes, cars and they automatically want me to service these units at least 3 to 4 times a year. Brown dust is just that, dust. But black oil rising to the top of the tub is the oil from cars and planes which also gets into their homes. This is very normal on the flight paths in and out of Seattle.

You can definitely use the dishwasher. It's easy to just put them in and take them out dry. The only negative that I saw was those wires breaking and that's extremely rare. Other than that is totally acceptable. There isn't I showed my way in the video is because as a service tech I only have about 30 minutes to an hour on site and doing it the way I showed it in the video enables me to get all the work done in a timely fashion. Occasionally clients will choose to put these air cleaners in the dishwasher while I'm there but then it's up to them to put them back in and sometimes it causes a call back because they forget to turn power back on or they forget how to put them back in. But you're totally fine to use that obviously you've done it enough times too know it by heart

My owners manual says don't use if you have lower and upper arms in the dishwasher. I think they are implying that you should remove the dish racks to make room. This would mean the cells lay on the lower arm and maybe block the upper arm. So, I'm guessing some machines just shoot out streams from the sides/top/bottom without using a rotating arm.

There are truly so many good ways to do it. I'm glad this was helpful in answering some of these questions. And thank you for asking! The next video will include more details. I noticed that I'm missing several ionization wires and it appears that the spring connections they were connected to have arced and burned. Are the connections and wires replaceable? Not sure if this is something I can do myself or not. Thanks!

@cleanairheatingcooling4105
@cleanairheatingcooling4105 3 месяца назад
You can dilute it to an average strength as long as you do this regularly. If you're trying to clean them and one application is not sufficient, then go ahead and try a second and a third application. If that's not enough then I would say you can use a stronger solution. I appreciate the comment and please check back in for future videos and feel free to reach out with any other questions.

I'm on my second Honeywell EAC and I will attest that they do trap fine particulate. Something that bothers me however, is that no matter how much detergent and rinsing I do, there collector plates retain this black soot. It is nearly impossible to get a brush in between these plates to scrub them and that is exactly what they need. I have tried using a pressure washer outside but now I just put the cells in my dish washer.
@hootinouts
@hootinouts 8 месяцев назад
I too am on my second Honeywell EAC and have the same issue with the black soot that remains on the plates no matter what I have used to clean them. Today I experimented with several different cleaners and found that household ammonia seemed to dissolve that soot. Try it. Place the cells in a utility sink and use a spray bottle with ammonia and watch that soot run off.

We use HD calgon. There are some other fence your products out there that cost anywhere from 50 dollars to $150 for the ones that we use. I've never heard that about simple green. But there are so many variations of these household cleaners that it's really hard to be certain without checking this specifications on each bottle or the ingredients. I've never heard of simple green damaging these cleaners but that's not something that we use I only know of that based on our customers feedback.

I was planning to continue using this air filter, can you please give me some advise? I also have a Honeywell humidifier that still working, but planning to get Lennox one as well. @cleanairheatingcooling4105 Год назад
D Wong, it's up to you if you want it keep the old electronic air cleaner or buy a new one. The Honeywell EAC produces ozone. Few people are allergic to ozone. If that is not an issue for you, you don't have to replace it. I personally like the Lennox Pure Air because it's a MERV 16 filter and has a lot of benefits. If I had to choose I would choose he new Lennox Pure Aire. Also keep in mind that your Honeywell air cleaner may break in the upcoming years. At that point you can install an equivalent MERV 11 pleaded air filter cartridge or even a MERV 16 (like the Lennox Pure Aire). You could also replace the unit with a new one altogether, however at that time it will cost more labor. It's easier to do it at the same time as the furnace. I'm sorry I didn't see your message sooner. Please give me an update on what you've decided to do. If you're still in the process of thinking about it please reach out by text and I will help you further.

I have the original Honeywell F50 F and F300E Electronic Air Cleaner owner’s guide and it says to use automatic dishwashing powder, which I did use at one time. Now this product comes in Tablets, which are not useful for cleaning electronic air filters. In the video you advise using a residential degreaser product. Is there any information from Honeywell where this is noted? I don’t see that they have updated any information in many years.

This is a great question. I'm glad you asked it. I have read most of the manuals from Honeywell. I honestly haven't read any very recently. But if you have one of the original ones, rest assure that if you don't use something like brake cleaner, heavy duty degreaser or acid, you will be fine. Simple green, Windex, etc are adequate.

You shouldn't use this electronic air cleaners in combination to regular pleated filters. You don't want to double up. Just pick to use one or the other. In general these electronic air cleaners if they're washed routinely which can be anywhere from a couple weeks to 4 months should be better than a regular 1-in filter. But if you have a merv 11, 13 or 16 filter that would be better than these EACs.

@cleanairheatingcooling4105

The green filters are called "post-filters". That means they have to be downstream of the big cells. The silver "pre-filters" need to be installed closest to the air return intake, and the green ones go closest to the furnace or air handler.

If you are using the whole electronic air cleaner as designed and clean it every 3 months or so, you should not use an additional disposable filter. Adding a second filter would slow down the airflow and increase static pressure. That can lead to a lot of issues. It would take a 30 minute video to list them all, but just remember, one filter system at a time.

@cleanairheatingcooling4105
@cleanairheatingcooling4105 3 месяца назад
That's a great question. I wish I would have mentioned this in my video. Having been a service technician for over 15 years now I can say that 90% of the electronic air cleaners do not have the post filter. They either get thrown away or they get damaged but they are not essential. Most of the work is being done by the big electronic cells. If you have the post filters you just wash them like the rest of the cells. You don't replace them unless they are damaged. If you still have the manual, there may be a recommendation for a schedule and how often to replace the post filters.
