In this video, I challenge myself to find new things to play in solos, and one way I do that is to limit myself to a single thing and then really explore that, and that is what I am going to do in this video with a basic Cmaj7 arpeggio and all the Bebop Tricks I can think of, or at least most of them.

It's 3AM here in Kansas City, Missouri. I'm a night owl. Some of the best ways to get the most practical use of Arpeggio's is 1.Melodic embellishment of the diatonic 1,3,5,7 notes. 2. Interesting rhythms. 3. Different contours. 4. Inversions. In other words Parker Bebop Arpeggio language which you demonstrate here perfectly. Limitation exercises are one of the best ways to thoroughly ingrain a concept. Great video.Thanks.

Jens - if you're ever having a bad day, just think about how much you're helping people. Being a great teacher and being able to leverage technology in this way means you quite possibly are helping more people than any music teacher has in history. Think about that! I really feel like I can say we ALL appreciate you and your efforts!

I recently realized that about Charlie Parker’s language: he has a lot of the general sound of the older players and the idea of the Major 6 chord as a stable triad. A lot of times he only plays 7ths in a blues as a point of resolution to the next chord. In a lot of ways I wonder: maybe he thought about harmony in a different way than how most people think now. Maybe that’s why it’s so hard to replicate a lot of his playing…
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 2 года назад
I don't know if he thought differently about harmony, that depends on how you think 🙂 I må pretty sure he did not think in chord scale and modes though 😁

Enjoy your videos as always! As I think you have explained in the past, one of the ways I love getting more mileage out of awesome major seven lines and concepts like these is to use them from the flat seven of substitute dominant cords, like tritone subs and back-door dominants, or from the minor third of the II-7 chord.

the pedal point notes... i like this sound very much because it builds a groove into the melody. dub n dob n dub... and i wonder what rules or laws are common with this principle. is the pedal note for example a 5 (as an absolute note) or relative to the melody note, maybe a 6? and how to practice it to get into the fingers?

A Jens, great vid again. Your Parker story on the introduction I7 in blues ('extended dominant') is quit intruiging. Do you have any reference maretial on that?
@JensLarsen

Not really, it was an observation made by a teacher at the conservatory, and it is fairly easy to spot in solos.

Thanks for that but for some reason I see jazz guitar as this complex language of guitar. I think I would be going back as far as this is a guitar in jazz terms. I have learnt the fretboard and a lot of chords but as soon as someone states diatonic or what modes do you know my brain goes to mush. An instance of this, if you say play dom c7 or cmaj 7 fine can do but put those chords in jazz notation and I’m back to playing one note c chord. It is literally that much of a leap for me some reason. Thanks for your help.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 2 года назад
@@As-pf1zu Listen to the music and stop wondering how to play it. It is a genre of music, it is not a skill, and if you don't like the music then don't worry about how to play it. It should always start by listening to the music.

Sorry Jens, but although the material in your videos is great and the playing very nice, I have got a criticism (which applies to many of your 'colleagues' too) : the sound of your voice is much louder than the volume of the guitar. It makes it unpleasant to listen to, without turning it down, then I can't hardly hear your lines.
