How To Write Unlikeable Protagonists

How can an unlikeable character make a good protagonist? Isn’t a likable protagonist better than an unlikable one? Aren’t the different versions of Anakin a perfect example of that? Well, let’s talk about it.

I like his character too. But a LOT of people complain that he's unlikeable because he's "too whiny".

So?he just became a villain you can't expect him to be nice plus he cries for them and if you hate anikin just for being a villain you didn't get his character arc

Thank you!!! This is what ive been saying 🤷. It didn't surprise me how Anakin was written and potrayed. The prequels is a villain origin story, so I figured Anakin's personality would be flawed with a soft and good side to him and that's exactly what is on screen. So I don't understand why everyone complained and acted like George Lucas made a mistake. When was it said that Anakin wasn't going to be a flawed character. I don't recall any interviews and articles where GL said that🤦🤦. Plus finding a character unlikable or likable isn't a objective argument, it's subjective. That being said, I found Anakin to be very likable in the prequels, the reason why Darth vader is my favorite character is because of the of the prequels, not clone wars. All tcw did was give me more of my favorite character 🤷🤷

I think Dave Filoni's Anakin is a Mary Sue just like his Padawan.... There is too much moments they made other Jedi acts like idiots for praising Anakin. Also Filoni himself said "Anakin is the greatest Jedi ever" despite all Prequel movies about that he's cannot be a good Jedi. (Being a great warrior or pilot aren't same with being a good Jedi) That’s why George Lucas's Anakin and the EU Anakin are REAL Anakin Skywalkers.

I wouldn't say TCW Anakin is a Mary Sue/Gary Stu as he gets dumped on quite a lot in that show, but he's also on unreasonably good standing with the council in that series, so there definitely is an aspect of his character getting an unjustifiable leg-up, so to speak. And yeah, Filoni calling Anakin the "greatest Jedi ever" was so cringe. Especially since George had made it abundantly clear that he saw Luke as the greatest Jedi.

Anakin from the movies was plenty likeable Given, he had a short fuse and struggled with his emotions but that was just an unfortunate side effect of having soulless sociopaths as his teachers

Agree that PT Anakin wasn't as "unlikeable" as so many claim. Strongly disagree that the Jedi Order are soulless sociopaths.

Black Swordman Arc Guts is a great unlikeable protagonist, because the entirety of the introductory arc of Berserk is dedicated to showing the extremes Guts is willing to go to. One may come away from this story arc with the idea that Guts is an irredeemable sociopath, which would be a fair takeaway if not for Puck (his elf companion) noticing Guts looking emotionally wrecked when he thought noone was looking. It shows us that most of the f*cked up shit he said or did is most likely bravado, for some reason. A reason that the entire manga is dedicated to expand on. It's what makes Berserk so special to me.

Correction, I *do* like his character. However, a LOT of people complain that he's unlikeable because he's "too whiny" and claim that TCW "fixed" him. If you'd watched the video, you'd understand this video is a response to such people.

Also, I am clearly trying to defend Anakin's PT portrayal in the video, which someone who found him unlikeable wouldn't do. Hence why it seemed like you had commented without watching. And I can't help but point out how rich it is for you (who jumped to an assumption about me disliking/not knowing Anakin) to then tell me to "lose the assumptions". 💀

Correction, I called him "unlikeable". The quotation marks are because a LOT of people complain that he's unlikeable because he's "too whiny" and claim that TCW "fixed" him. If you'd watched the video, you'd understand it is a response to such people.

As @m.e. said above, it's not that we consider him unlikeable ourselves, it's just that a lot of other people think he is, hence why we put him in the thumbnail and made this video to refute the idea that TCW Anakin is "better".

I feel like there's just gonna be a lot of unnecessary Prequel hate in this video just based on the Thumbnail and the title. Anakin may not have been likable at times but that doesn't mean he was unlikeable overall. We understood his grievances, needs, and wants. Plus when you take into account, that he was a slave as a child and indoctrinated into an emotionless cult of monks, many things start to make sense.

Sounds like you would agree with the video if you actually watched it... Also, the Jedi weren't an emotionless cult. They were a philosophical order that believed emotionally wielding the Force could be dangerous, so they strove to control their emotions rather than be controlled by them. And it's not an inherently outrageous idea. It's just that they mishandled Anakin, who was a rather unique case, but they clung to tradition instead of adapting to his needs.

Like @m.e. said already, if you had watched the video you'd realize that we agree Anakin is likeable and well-written in the Prequels. It's just that a LOT of people think otherwise, hence why we put him in the thumbnail.
