I totally relate to this. Two mental breakdowns, 8 years apart. Both brought on because I stopped sleeping. Panic all night, vomiting with stress. I totally understand the rabbit hole of looking for answers that I couldn't find. Dependance on sleep meds and terrible, awful fear. Finding this info really did set me on the road to recovery. Every now and then I get a rough week but I'm not so afraid anymore. Each time it's getting easier and I'm coping better.

I check in from time to time with the videos despite being ( fingers crossed) insomnia free for over 6 months now after having suffered for 18 months … this video has struck a chord .. the suicidal thoughts .. my very good friend took her own life just before Xmas .. I’m still in shock tbh 😢… Tracey developed insomnia which coincided with her going into a deep depression.. Yes she was very poorly with her depression but to this day I think her insomnia contributed to her taking her own life ..She is truly at peace now I do believe that no matter how horrendous it’s been . Everybody ..all her friends tried everything .. even trying to get her into the priory as she could afford it but she said no.. a few weeks before her death she seemed in good spirits which always makes me think she had made her mind up and she did not want to be saved like her decision somehow made her happy . How tragic … 😢thanks zev for being so open about your struggles .. nothing should be taboo .. people need to talk .

He is younger than me, but he understood and realised all these intelligent things much earlier than I did. and I still have a lot of trouble dealing with this fear and just letting it go. thanks for sharing his story. ❤ and he's a very likeable guy!

I was watching this interview and mid way through it I had a strong urge to tell you, you are such a strong individual. Very very strong person who was able to deal with all this and still stay strong even though it might seem that you were breaking down all the time. When you described that you were doing swimming even though you were tired, and then afterwards when you were running marathons, doing meditation trying to calm your mind, learning spirituality at an early age, I was so emotional hearing all these things. I am so proud of you and of us who go through these anxieties and bounce back so strongly. Also, during my struggle I realized that our brain was meant to keep us safe and not happy. So everything I did according to my brain even though they were very wrong, was just because it was trying to keep me safe. And slowly I learned to accept and treat all the thoughts of my brain kindly and repeating over whenever I was anxious that I know you are keeping me safe, but I am safe and I will be happy each day and every night. And even though I had crappy nights, I did exercise as I would do any other day, I swam in the mornings even though I felt tired getting up from my bed, I focused on my work, cooked for myself, talked and laughed with loved ones, read good books, watched my phone a little during bed time as I did before and just held myself close even if I was anxious again the next night. And slowly, I learned that insomnia was just a fear and what my brain was telling me was the deepest form of self love so as to keep me PROTECTED. And I didn't have to follow ANYTHING that it told me. And then, it faded and ended. It was a long journey with extremely high highs and very deep lows, crying my eyes out some nights and enjoying some nights to the fullest and sleeping like a baby. I also kept in mind that this fear was not that important to discuss it with any body, even if he or she was a close friend, because there were many beautiful things to discuss. I know I might sound very positive but I had been very negative past couple years and now, this new person has really MOVED ON to dwell on this fear again. Thank you so much coach Daniel. You are genuinely amazing. And so is everybody on this channel.

I’m 16, struggling with insomnia since I was 14. I’m so glad I discovered this channel because it has been one hell of a journey. Hearing about his story, I feel so relieved that I’m not the only teenager stuck in this rabbit hole. The sleepless nights were horrible and I felt like I would never sleep again. These videos really help me on my journey to peaceful sleep.

I love how he said having a wake up time requires bravery, I can so relate to that. I want to do the same, not as a sleep effort but as self care step toward a schedule and a good mental health routine in general. I have a very flexible work schedule and I tend to just stay in bed until the late morning to make up my lack up sleep but also because I feel a little down and don’t want to take on the day early. I think a schedule is a kindness to us and can help us maneuver our thoughts and feelings toward a better future.

This is an incredibly powerful interview - what a brilliantly articulate young man Zev is. It's really sad to see that someone in such critical depths of despair can still be told the answer lies in 'sleep hygiene' but it's also so wonderful that he was able to find peace of mind through The Sleep Coach School's teachings.

Awesome content! I had trouble sleeping for about a year in 2014 (as a university student). It went away for a long time until about 3 weeks ago when I had a trigger night, since then I've been having mostly very low sleep nights (3-4 hours a night I think), the occasional 6-7 hour night and the occasional no sleep at all night. After reading Set it and forget it and watching a lot of sleep couch RU-vid yesterday, I set a goal last night which was just to stay positive, think peaceful thoughts and not care about going to sleep until I fell asleep. I read for a while in bed, and put down the book before feeling sleepy, opting to think peaceful thoughts until I feel sleepy instead of reading till sleepy. I was doing well for a while, just thinking with my eyes closed, but found myself losing patience later in the night and the frustrations slowly started creeping in, I was running out of pleasant things to think about! The frustrations grew larger everytime I could feel myself drifting off then suddenly getting hyperaroused and feeling palpitations, it happened a few times. I eventually drifted off and maybe slept a couple hours (third night in a row of "bad" sleep) and as per usual I feel a little tired, but okay today to go to work etc. From reading the book, it talks about sleep restriction, to not go to bed until a certain time at night or until you feel sleepy, and to do something pleasant and enjoyable until then. It also mentioned you can stay in bed as long as you do something pleasant like reading a book, watching a show or having peaceful thoughts. Does this mean staying in bed and reading/watching Netflix and only putting down your book/phone when you feel sleepy? Or would it be better to read in the living room first and only go to the bedroom when sleepy? Last night as mentioned I also experienced hyperarousal when just about to fall asleep, usually I get it just once or maybe twice, but since I became aware of it yesterday, I experienced it maybe 5 or so times last night. Is there anyway to get around this specifically? Or would the lack of fear and not giving attention to sleep remedy this as well? Thanks so much for the content so far! Appreciate everything you guys have done.

Again I was one of many people coach Daniel help. My insomnia was cured some nights I have trouble sleeping but the insights and the answer to my RU-vid question was a god send. Again I've unsubscribed to his channel not because I'm not grateful it just I'm okay now and I just want to move one with my life. Thank coach Daniel.

Seems like a good guy, I'm glad he has overcome this challenge. It would be fascinating to know more about his home situation growing up and about his parents. It sounds like there was a lot more going on that was unaddressed and would be vital for a full understanding of Zev's journey and is probably where the real lessons lie. Thanks for sharing.

Thank Daniel and Zev for sharing this powerful insomnia podcast. I especially moved by the story by Zev asking someone who's 60 years old gentlemen who had suffered from insomnia for 35 years but looking like 40 years old, Wow, that caught my special attention and that is so helpful to my fear towards my insomnia. This interview add so much hope and encouragement to my sleep issues, i will save this video and listen to it when i needed a reminder. I'm so grateful to having sleep coach Daniel consistently produced such valuable interview & podcast, you are a soul saving Angel to many many of us, god bless !!

Hi Daniel, thanks for doing these awesome videos. I’ve posted here before asking for advice but I’m petrified of not sleeping for extended periods of times and hallucinating from not sleeping, cause I’ve read online that that’s possible. I’ve watched a read online video that you made which from what I interpreted is that it dosent happen. From ur experinced as a coach and stuff have u had patients that experienced hallucinations from lack of sleep or would it not happen to someone with no severe mental health issues.

Hey Daniel, so my OCD and anxiety are just so out of control. I logically know and hear everything I’m learning from you but I’m still obsessing so bad. Long story short, I haven’t been able to tolerate any medications to get my ocd under control. So I’m going to be starting TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation). I guess I’m asking, if I get the OCD and anxiety under control will the hyperarousal lessen so I can sleep without pills? I know you’ve interviewed some ppl with OCD. But have you had any clients that got TMS done?

I have two questions, if it is possible to answer them. 1 - About the nap. CBTI prohibits taking naps. Is it possible to at least lie down on the couch and relax after a day of fighting? 2 - I remember that in the past, when I tried to take a nap, I always paid attention to the process and almost never managed to do it. Is there a secret or is it just a matter of being aware of the act? 3 - Taking advantage of the previous question, from what I understand, sleep is a process that passes through the unconscious. When we pay attention to the process, or the brain wants to solve the problem, we bring awareness to the process and cannot sleep. How can we let the unconscious do its work, when we are always paying attention to either our breathing or our heartbeat?

I have been struggling with insomnia for 3 years now, on and off. Have tried different sleeping aids and I’m really having a hard time with sleep anxiety. Hi Daniel, I was doing well for months at a stretch when I started my new job. I thought I recovered well. Few days ago I got admitted due to some physical illness and somehow insomnia anxiety are back at full swing. And with lot of work pressure now and physical and mental health deteriorating. I had to consult a psychiatrist here to calm my nerves and he is also suggesting therapy for Generalised anxiety disorder to deal with all my worries. What do you think I should do in this situation?

Thanks to all at SCS for making it possible for people like myself to binge-watch your material. And thanks to Zev for reminding me how many insomniacs present as HSPs (cf Elaine N. Aron’s 1996 book, quite possibly published before Zev was even born!). No negative judgement intended here, Zev, given that I myself have been labelled an HSP… Please know that a) if I had had a son I would have wanted him to be exactly like YOU; and b) I too am a Wim Hof fan. 🧊 ❤ 🧊 ❤ 🧊 ❤

I'm not an HSP but I have suffered terribley with Insomnia. I believe A Type personalities are more likely to be insomniacs. I can't remember where I heard that though.
