Hunga Tonga Volcano Eruption Update; Large Tsunami Occurs; Powerful Explosive Eruption

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano in Tonga on January 15th produced a large and destructive tsunami through a new volcanic eruption. This tsunami occurred due to partial edifice collapse, as the southeast flank of the volcano had become structurally unstable. The tsunami originated after a powerful volcanic explosion which sent a plume of ash more than 20,000 meters or 66,000 feet into the atmosphere. What had just occurred was likely the most powerful volcanic eruption in a decade. This video will separate fact from fiction, and discuss the tsunami, how it occurred, and what might happen next at Hunga Tonga. It is a very famous volcano as it has produced several spectacular island forming eruptions in the 21st century.

Update #1. New satellite imagery appears to show that 90% of the Hunga Tonga island is gone. All that remains are two satellite islands to the east and west. Today's eruption was so energetic that several verifiable reports were made of the eruption boom being heard in Kenai (Alaska) which is 9243 km or 5743 mi distant. Also, in volcanology, there is a generalized equation to approximate the size of an eruption if it is greater than VEI 3. The equation is (plume height in kilometers + 25)/9 where you round down if you get a decimal. Although this eruption would return a figure of 5 (20+25)/9=5, the plume height is larger than it would have been if not for the interaction with seawater. Thus, this eruption was most likely of a magnitude VEI 4. I hope that there is not a severe toll from this tsunami. There is some good news; it did not occur at night but instead mid afternoon so everyone was awake. Also, you might be wondering why I did not show any footage of the tsunami as I had several clips available. The short answer is I did not want to get demonetized by RU-vid. They have a very specific policy against showing property destruction (unless you are a major news organization).

@@_mortiam If I understand what you mean correctly that was actually night setting on the area as the eruption happened right before nightfall in Tonga. (The massive band stretching vertically across the entire planet covering all latitudes.) Nightfall is a very interesting thing to view from space, the gradually darkening region between the light of day and the darkness of night is called the terminator, as light and darkness both end (terminate) there.

I heard it in Auckland, New Zealand. I was having beers with a neighbour and we heard multiple booms - similar to fireworks but the sun was out so we knew it couldn't be fireworks. We actually climbed onto the roof to see if something in the neighbourhood blew up but we couldn't see anything so assumed it was construction noise or other demolition work.

I heard the explosion as well. Lots of damage in the northern marinas from the tsunami last night. Still surging at Orewa beach just north of Auckland by about a metre every 5 minutes at 7.30 this morning.

@@goldenpacificmedia I can't quite time stamp it as I didn't realise the relevance at this time but I reckon it was in and around 7:30 - 8pm. Not 100% sure though. We thought a car may have caught fire and it was popping with the petrol but there was probably 6 or 7 loud pops over a 5-10 minute span

The National Weather Service in Alaska is confirming people's claims that they heard the booms as far north as Fairbanks Alaska, I did not personally hear it because I was asleep but an official source is confirming the sound was heard this far away. That's insane!

I did not I was sleeping but my dogs were acting like they do when we have an earthquake. The one woke me up climbing into the bed which he does not usually do. I dismissed it cause it's Alaska. Earthquakes happen lol. But now I gotta wonder

The shockwave was recorded in Alaska as residents heard the boom and the national weather service confirmed that the boom that were heard in most of Alaska are from the eruption in Hunga Tonga. The ash cloud is still very noticeable and is heading west towards New Caledonia

I have to doubt the veracity of reports that it was heard in Alaska. That would mean it was significantly louder than Krakatoa 1883. EDIT: Apparently it's being corroborated by several of the relevant scientific institutes. I find it incredibly impressive though, and I'm eagerly awaiting more news about this eruption.

I was watching a normal local news broadcast from California about this explosion since now there are tsunami warnings all up and down the West Coast. It was painful to watch--the beautiful lady that serves as meteorologist had a very difficult time explaining this stuff. So I came here to the expert instead. You provided probably 10x more useful information in 4 minutes than those lost newscasters could do in 12 minutes. Bless their little hearts. Thanks!

@@uptoolate2793 Not necessarily. The Sacramento area has had a number of decent meteorologists, including the recently retired Dave Bender. I credit them for my increased interest and basic knowledge of all things meteorological, as well as many things geological. When I moved to CA, I was very impressed that they covered weather events from everywhere in-depth. Also, they would have segments discussing different phenomenon, storms/hail, tornadoes, quakes, etc. I think this was in part due to the fact that we don't usually have much interesting weather here, and they were given the time. ✌️😎💚🌎

I used to live in the LA area many years ago. Pat Sajak was one of the big weather guys. LA has mostly boring weather so it was really a personality/comedy job. I remember the day he announced that he was going to try to host a new game show. He did pretty well with that!

I measured two small pressure waves on my backyard weather station barometer about 12 and 24 h after the eruption. I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada which is almost exactly 1/3 the way around the globe. One wave arrived by a direct great circle route and the other went the long way around. Speed was ~300 m/s.

I can tell you firsthand what it did in Kailua Kona, HI. This morning. The usual crazy rapid extreme tide changes and strong shifting currents. High tide to low tide about every 15 minutes or so. Slightly to the extreme side both ways. Surfing was interesting during dawn patrol. Nothing severe danger-wise. Just tiring. The 2011 tsunami was a serious one.

I’m glad that the tsunami did not cause any damage in Hawaii. Part of the fact may be due to that volcanic tsunamis (caused by landslides) tend to be a bit slower than earthquake caused tsunamis.

I watched the 2011 tsunami do damage in Kailua town. The ocean rose up, poured over the sea wall, and ran down Ali'i Dr. My wife worked in an office at the old Kona Inn and had to take two weeks off because the power was out. I remember the water almost to the doorstep of Quin's.

@@sambaer8646 The Kona Inn Shopping Villages power was all underneath the building. It took 2 weeks to get replacement/new parts. My work was in a gallery in that shopping village at the time. I got to see the last big tidal surge go into the restaurant after it had already been destroyed. There were 4 distinct waves starting around 3 or 4 am. I shot photos of them from Lowe's parking lot. Focused on the outer edge of the pier.

Well, on the 23 mile southern leg of my bike ride this morning on maui, one section does drop down to sea level for a little ways down Makena side (my first 40 miles was at sea level along the pali highway on the west side -no damage or debris observed there) Did see an unusual amount of small rock and coral debris on the roadway in a couple spots in makena near Ahihi bay - pattern not consistant with heavy surf action - looks more like it "oozed" up onto the road instead of getting tossed (like a big West swell might do)

The central part of the island had sunk under the sea just hours before the eruption. More than 15 hours after the explosion, the air pressure wave passed over Europe, en route to the opposite point in the Sahara.

Think it’s a chain reaction, Alaska has 2 6.0+ magnitude earthquakes and then Jakarta, Indonesia had a 6.7 earthquake several hours before this eruption occurred. I won’t be surprised if the eruption in the Canary Islands had any influence on these earthquakes/eruptions.

I live in a small island off the coast of Brisbane, Qld, Australia and it just so happens that my 10 year old daughter and I heard a loud bang/boom in the afternoon. The shockwave travelled across the world. Here in Austria in Middle Europe, which is pretty much on the opposite side of the globe, it was also visible as a spike in air pressure curves.

I live in Sweden and my personal weather station air pressure quickly went up about 1 hPa at about 6:45 PM UTC over here on Saturday. Lots of weather stations all over Europe noticed this short pressure change on their graphs.

Makes sense as the Tsar Bomba's pressure wave circled the Earth thrice. This is about that kind of magnitude. My weather station showed a pressure spike of about 1.8hPa around 9:20PM MSK time.

Reading this a few days later. We had quick tidal changes inside the San Francisco Bay. Pretty amazing that there was enough energy to funnel in the Golden Gate Narrows and affect the entire bay. Avoided going to see my boat since local warnings said to avoid marinas beaches and other shoreline. Went sailing Sunday. The only evidence that anything was amiss was all the debris. We also had a high tide so with the extra height from the surge I'm sure a lot of stuff got dislodged from the shoreline. My track out of the estuary was a near constant zigzag and we all kept a good watch. Just found your channel. Very good explanation. Thanks. Last tsunami from Japan damaged docks and other structures where they were aligned with the incoming rush and opposite the entrance to the Bay. I saw videos where the water looked like a river through the Berkeley Marina. Glad my boat was in Alameda.

@@Adele-zq5zd He seems to believe we have missiles over a kilometer in length😂. You’d need a large payload to recreate something like that, which last I checked most countries scaled back their arsenal in favor of smaller accurate weapons for maximum efficiency

AFter watching this video I checked the data from my weather station in Melbourne Australia and there was a significant spike in air pressure rising from 1006hPa to 1008.4 hPa and then falling back to 1005.6hPa over between 6:54pm and 7:44pm Melbourne time which coinsides with the Hunga Tonga eruption. I have never seen something like this being caused by such an vent 4200+km away before. I find it quite amazing.

Why no mention of the Canadian west coast? US west coast and Alaska were issued warnings I would think that Vancouver Island with a population of 900,000 and city of Vancouver and environs has 2.5 million might at least get a mention.

This volcano is proving itself to be quite the capable little thing. I wonder if it could possibly create some larger blasts, since it certainly doesn't look done yet. The ancient caldera definitely makes me wonder if this thing could pull off a VEI 6 or perhaps even 7 if it has more magma down there and keeps going like this.

With these ocean volcanoes it's the collapse of the magma chamber, allowing seawater to rush in and react with magma, is what make the big explosions. It appears that this is in fact what occurred, so I wouldn't expect anything quite so violent now. It is of course speculation, but I think this is the more likely scenario

Wow!!! It is Hunga Tonga!!! Based an the first newscasts I checked out, it didn't seem like it. Given the visible shockwave on the satellite feeds, I'm not surprised how far away it was heard/felt. Here in California, Santa Cruz already has some larger waves and flooding at the Marina. It was reported that Monterey had 2ft and LA had 1-2ft waves. I'm in the Delta region, which is also listed in the advisories. But haven't gone out to see if there've been any changes here. 🤦 Hope everyone's ok in the islands. Looked like there was extensive coastal flooding. Much thanks for the informative update. CNN needs you! ✌️😸

I detected the pressure change on my Weather Station in Adelaide, South Australia, a few hours later a friend reported a pressure change in Perth Western Australia. It was amazing to see. Few reports of rumbles on the eastern side of Australia. The Ash plume from the eruption hit the Eastern side of Australia and was visible on Weather Satellites, as well as an interesting coloured sunrise in Mackay, QLD.

Eruptions with plumes higher than 20km's are pretty rare! I can count only a handful since Pinatubo.

im sure i seen a few last year, at least a handful since 2016. there has been a few bigger ones erupting. what ive read that volcanic eruptions have been increasing by a big jump since 2016, but we have entered a grand solar minimum cycle 2020-2053 but sun's activity went quite at end of 2016 start of 2017, happens approx every 350-400 years and also in these times we have a weakened magnetic field, a weakened magnetic field has many effects, volcanic possible as some of the biggest in resent history have happens in these cycles, also cosmic rays, they can effect clouds directly, seed clouds, trigger lightning. many big changes are happening and we are just along for the ride

@@stevekenilworth There has been no such eruption plume last year. Nor in 2019 even with Raikoke and Ulawun having VEI4 eruptions. We have seen many plumes around 15 KM's asi but above 20? Nope. There was Manam in 2015 but it might have been just short of that value.

That mystery 1808 eruption - based on stratospheric aerosol veil distribution being visible in South America before anywhere else while also being initially only visible across a large area (both Colombia and Peru simultaneously), kind of points a finger at something near where Hunga Tonga is now located as being the source of it, although more research (computer modeling would be helpful) would need to be conducted to confirm that. Regardless of whether or not it is the source however, based on the audibility in Alaska as well as the sheer size of the eruption column, I wouldn’t be surprised if this current eruption ends up being a VEI-6 when all is set and done, especially given that no 4 that we know of has ever managed to spread 200 miles from its source upon reaching the stratosphere. Also, because the reaction of SO2 and water is how you get a stratospheric aerosol veil to form, the effect on climate is also going to be interesting to watch.

@@KathrynsWorldWildfireTracking Galapagos is too close to be visible from both Colombia and Peru at the same time and Easter Island is too far south to be visible from Colombia in particular. Also, the only thing that was visible from both those locations simultaneously was the stratospheric aerosol veil, not the eruption column - people living along the South American coast would be able to see the eruption column itself if it was that close. It would have to be far enough west of there to send aerosols both north and south, while also ensuring that people in South America only see aerosols and not ash, and also far enough east of the Maritime Continent to remain mysterious in origin, not to mention have a low enough profile to remain invisible to people on ships. Hunga Tonga, based on those observations and the details therein, is the only thing that makes any sense when it comes to pinning down the source of that 1808 ice core spike.

There's hundreds of submarine volcanos in the South Pacific, quite difficult to say which eruption is the mystery one.

@@sixthsenseamelia4695 Very few of them are large submarine calderas with explosive tendencies, and Hunga Tonga just happens to be a large submarine caldera - again, that’s why I suggested computer modeling as a way of narrowing everything down. It may not be the only candidate, but it’s the best candidate we have.

The pressure wave was noticed at the MSP airport (Minneapolis, Minnesota USA). It erupted around 10PM our time on 1/14 and reached here at 8AM on 1/15.

Several hours later and we are still in a tsunami advisory here in N. California. I feel for the people of Tonga. The local news interviewed Tongans living in our area and they said communications went down early this afternoon. Hopefully it’s just their cellular/internet and not because of additional damage.

Sorry, but I have a hard time believing that. Alaska is nearly 9000 km away, even Krakatoa's 1883 eruption, famously the loudest sound ever heard by humans, was only audible 5000 km away.

The pressure wave from Tonga is the only thing capable of travelling that distance, not the audible part of the eruption. It's most likely to have been pushing sounds from much closer in with it, such as the erupting Aleutian Island volcano. So you may well have been hearing sounds of an eruption, just not the one in Tonga. One of these weird coincidences.

Yup 2-3ft tsunami measures in Monterey Bay in California. No damages (AFAIK) occurred at high tide but it was still below most break walls so nothing really exciting.

I live about halfway down the North Island of NZ and yesterday at roughly 6pm we experienced something odd - our north-facing doors/windows shook for about ten minutes yet there was no detectable ground movement/wind was very minimal. Could this have been an effect of the shockwave from the explosion reaching us ~2 hours later? At the time I was very confused as this has never happened before in over a decade in this house & hadn't heard about the most recent eruption yet, but now I am curious if this could be possible?

@@MrPeabody67 2 hours for a pressure wave from an eruption to travel from Tonga to NZ? Very much not an expert, but that seems incredibly long. I wonder if it might not have been an unusual type of ground tremor, related to the explosion/geological aftereffects of it? I think one can get strange combinations/intensities of various ground-waves that might account for the movement of north-facing doors & windows without any tremors detectable via human senses. Just wild layperson speculation on my part, though.
