Last week I drove (with my gf) 1300 km and my thoughts were going towards you and the tests you are doing. I started to appreciate you even more for the time you put on these tests. I realize there is time and effort you put in the test itself but also in the preparation and post-production. Appreciation for your wife as well for the patience and understanding :). As someone that is about to buy an EV soon, I really appreciate the time you put in making these tests. So in other words: thank you very much for the work you are doing! :)

Thanks for this info. I've bought a 2022 Kona Max (64kW) a month ago and was perplexed that I'm not able to even hit a 400km range on a single charge. I thought that since it's rated 484km WLTP, it would have been at least 400km, even if I'm going at 120km/h or more. But your recording confirms that it's what the car can do. 350km-ish under normal driving condition.

Am I the only one thinking this is quite impressive? 190Wh/km at those speeds is pretty darn good in my book... Any idea how the pre-facelift model performed?

The difference is almost negligible, but the facelift model is marginally more effective.

How can anybody determine that ‘the difference is almost negligible without using professioal testing equipment let alone following for example ISO and IEC standardization for testing EV’s? Basing measuments on the car’s own instruments is in my book the highest degree of amateur car testing.

@@rogers999100 Based on arguments used it should be obvious that the comment was based off of users experiences, even tho it also obvioulsy was not documented. The comment should aslo obviously not be interpreted as a result of a professional testing procedure. In my opinion there should be room for comments based off of personal experiences. Of course, an professional testing procedure would give the ideal and definite answer.

@@rogers999100 there is very little value in a single scientific range test, because real world range can vary so significantly depending on changing circumstances. It is better to do a lot of tests under all kinds of conditions and use that to make a predictive model.

We just bought a 23’ Kona and will be doing a 900 km road trip in Northern Canada where there are 200km distances without any chargers so I am glad to hear 300+ is achievable. It will give me a good buffer with a 2nd person and luggage.

Hi, just thought I’d remark on your comments on the interior. You have mentioned a few times about the interior surfaces being very hard, in particular the arm rests. In North America , I have a 2021 Ultimate, the arm rests are padded and some of the other parts of the dash are also a combination of hard and slightly softer. Just thought people might be interested in the difference between models in different geographic regions. Also FYI I’m getting between 450 & 475 klms per charge regularly.

Kona electric 64 was and is one of the "300 km highway - 130 kmh- CCS to CCS" - cars on the market! Yes, and 115 kmh is nearly impossible to reach in real long range Autobahn traffic in D. That means, that you get 17 kwh/100 km at the end in summer in Kona 64 at 130 Autobahn. That is my result in my Kona 64, too. (in german: Dem Amarok, der dir da dicht auffuhr, hättest du mit einem Tritt aufs Epedal komplett gezeigt, wo der Kona die Locken hat. Der Durchzig vom Kona ist auch auf der Bahn krass.). Hey: Work may be stressy for you at the moment, but thats no Problem, EV makes happy! The "ellbow hardplastic" is, by the way, really, really a very bad thing!!! I cant believe why they did that!

Thanks for the video. I really wish you’d include info on the charge curve when you were recharging it at the end. I’m curious how much time the new 77 kW DCFC saves vs the old 50 kW.

Chris, can you measure and compare the charged kWh on your next comparison trips? This is the only way we can get an effective overview of the efficiency of electric cars. E.g. Kona has greater charging losses than the ID.3 or Tesla shows significantly less kWh consumed in the vehicle.

It's difficult for me to understand why this is so efficient at 130km/h compared to Ioniq5, which is also a Hyundai. Ioniq is so thirsty even at 120km/h

The front face drag of Kona is so much less than Ioniq5! Ioniq 5 ist way bigger, thats the reason. But yes, the design of Number 5 is great, but the aerodynamics could have made much better. 2,3 kwh less for 100 km should have been possible, i am sure.

Ioniq 5 is bigger, longer , heavier , with bigger tires and a worse cx. That's why there is so much range difference even with a larger battery.

Ioniq at 90km/h it performs very well. But at 120+km/h it goes very wrong. I mean, there are other cars that don't have such a huge depreciation in efficiency

For UK drivers, by my calculations, that would be 203 miles with cruise at 85 mph (actual average 76mph). Consumption of 3.31 miles/kWh so a full range of about 220 miles at very high motorway speeds

I have the 64kWh Soul and this matches the sort of mileages I get. In the U.K. where you can not drive at 85mph for hours just due to to traffic without discussing legalities, 250 miles is very realistic range for almost any trip inc 70-80mph mostly motorway journeys.

Thanks. Impressive. Yes the ID.3 will be slightly higher in consumption and the 58 kWh would mean also shorter range. Then for a 1000 km real long trip the faster charging of the ID.3 would yield shorter travel time...... It might be interesting to do the same test in winter conditions... I am not that impressed with the ID.3 winter range even though mine has a heat pump.... maybe the SW updates have helped...

The consumption display without charging losses, which is approx. 10%, is larger than in the ID.3. The large battery makes the range. A comparison of consumption without measuring the charged kWh at the charging station has little informative value about the efficiency of an electric car.

Wrong - from the test performed by an independent - non affiliated - community in Romania, in the end the Kona 64 is having a range of 20% to 22% higher than the ID.3 58. Unfortunately for VW there are still a lot of things that need to be done in order to compete properly - or at least to do something with the price, which is simply too high at this moment.

@@andreirevenco Hi Andrei. Read my response again. I state the consumption of ID 3 is higher and it has a smaller battery than the Kona. Both will lead to ID.3 having a shorter range - in general ~50 km. But where the ID 3 will win, is on long trips. It charges now at 120 kW for the 58 kWh version. Kona charges at maximum 77 kW. After the first charge, the speed you travel depends on the charging speed and the consumption of the car. The consumption advantage of the Kona is too marginal to counter the higher charging speed. So if you need to travel 1000 km, the ID.3 will get there first. Actually the Kona 64 kWh is 10% higher priced in Denmark than the 58 kWh ID.3 - so unless the ~50 km extra range is needed frequently, the ID.3 is the better buy.

@@renebergqvist599 The response was for Karl, sorry for the misunderstanding. Regarding who “wins” the things are very debatable, as it depends how often you make those 1000 Km trips and how fast are your chargers (in Eastern Europe for instance you will find mainly 50 kW ones). Sure… every driver has his own scenario of using the car, and things will be different from country to country. For instance the price here is smaller for the 64 kWh Kona than for the 58 kWh ID.3, trips will generally be maximum 500-600 Km, so it really depends on context to say that a car os better suited for your needs or not. What is really disappoonting from my point of view is that VW with the MEB platform has not managed to match at least the efficiency of a car which Hyundai convertes from fossil to EV.

@@andreirevenco The Kona in its current version, derived from the combustion platform, is characterized by a good price / performance ratio. With its 64kWh battery a good range. Technologically, it is an "old electric vehicle" with insufficient space utilization /package, low charging capacity and no OTA capability. Loading planning is modest. But what is a clear disadvantage with an electric vehicle due to its high starting torque is its front-wheel drive - a "no go" for me.

Wow... Kona Electric at 130km/h is so much more efficient than Kia Niro EV, I would have thought they'd be closer to each other... Do you have the range test at 90km/h for both this new Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV?

Kia e-Niro is a much bigger and heavier comparing to Kona. It is much better for a family car. Kona had totalized 4927 kms and Kia e-Niro 15000 kms. I think that Kia Niro batteries chemistry is better that those in Kona. Both are good EV.

18.9 kw/100 km. I have 2019 Kona EV Ultimate. Never seen that before. Maybe 6.2 kw/100km. How is this possible. Your your first review of Kona 2019. Has it changed that much. Please clarify?

The government measurements are very confusing. Normal people like you and me instinctively calculate the number of kilometres we can go on one kWh of electricity. It sounds like your best energy efficiency was 6.2 km per kWh. This test result was 189 Wh per kilometre. That is 0.189 kWh to go 1 km. If you divide 1 by 0.189 you get 5.29 Km per kWh, roughly 5.3 Km per kWh. That result is at autobahn speed where wind resistance is high, so it is a good result for a subcompact crossover.

Nice rigorous tests. Are you sure the instant AC consumption is over time and not over km? One way to check would be to drive 135 km/h and then half the speed and see if that instant AC consumption changes.

The metric measure of distance is the metre. Kilo is a prefix that means 1000. Hence Kilo-Metre is the scientific pronunciation. Kilom-eter or Ki-lomiter are in common use in some countries but not scientific.

compared to all the other cars this one felt loud , really loud and you did not change the microphone nor settings I guess. Range is not enough, and such noise can be disturbing and makes you tired over time. I hope you will get an eqs for a 1000 km test and there we should see a 16 kWh figure for a far taller and heavier car than this one. But it will be a bit more expensive for sure too at 105.000 €

Can only speak from experience. Our new 2021 Kona Premium (UK) is very very quiet and very consistently has produced over 300 miles range in the summer with mixed driving ie. Town, country and motorway driving. Expect to be less good in winter and regrettably it does not have a heat pump as standard, but that won’t be an issue driving fairly locally. Can be pretty certain of more than 200 miles range even in the depths of winter. Not the right car if you need loads of space in the rear seats, but otherwise excellent. With such great range, public charging hardly ever required, barring the occasional very long trip.

@@stephenshannon3706 I agree, we've done 533 miles so far in our 2021 Premium and averaged 5miles/kwh, this equates to a range of 320 miles. I've just charged it to 100% and the distance to empty is showing as 327 miles. Brilliant range, great car!
