Until now, the Chevrolet Bolt EV and its 238 miles of range had a lock on the affordable long-range electric vehicle market. But now Hyundai has introduced the Kona Electric, a similarly sized EV that packs 258 miles of range for about the same price. We put them through the wringer to see which one is best.
Q: Are the Bolt and the Kona Electric really competitors?
A: Yes, the Kona Electric and the Chevrolet Bolt EV are competitors. They share the same wheelbase and overall length, and the Kona is only slightly lower and a bit wider than the Bolt. Both are four-door hatchbacks, although the Kona Electric is marketed as an SUV while the Bolt is not. And each is a front-wheel-drive machine powered by an electric motor rated at 150 kilowatts, which translates to 200 horsepower in the case of the Chevy and 201 hp for the Hyundai.
Q: How are the Kona Electric and the Bolt EV different?
A: The Kona Electric rides smoother than the Bolt because it has a multilink rear suspension instead of the Bolt's less sophisticated twist beam. And the Kona's cabin is wider inside, its front seats are more accommodating, and its interior controls and materials are more attractive. The Bolt, on the other hand, offers slightly more cargo room and a clear advantage in rear legroom.
Q: How far will the Chevrolet Bolt EV and the Hyundai Kona Electric go on a single charge?
A: The Chevrolet Bolt EV can go 238 miles on a charge. And to this point that has been far and away the most electric range offered by any affordably priced electric vehicle, by which we mean, not a Tesla. The Kona EV now tops that with 258 miles of range. That's fantastic, but it doesn't put the Bolt EV to shame. Both have enough to allow spontaneous side trips, skipped days without charging and even short weekend trips. And we have seen for ourselves that each of them can manage stints of over 300 miles with sensible driving in L.A.'s notorious slow-and-go freeway commute traffic.
Q: Wouldn't 300 miles or 400 miles of rated range be better?
A: We're not convinced. How much do you drive in a day, really? Besides, bigger batteries cost more money, and they also take up space that is better used for passengers and cargo. The range of these vehicles may represent the sweet spot. After all, the typical 240-volt charge station can add no more than 18-25 miles per hour of charging, which is why both take over nine hours to fill from empty.

coredumperror - I called a Los Angeles Hyundai dealer. The Kona Electric, which sells in the 37-42 range, (I thought), currently lists for 40-49. The dealer had three available. Theoretically I can purchase in Ca and have shipped back to me, however, who would be able to service the car? Answer, no one in my city, which means what’s the point? I drove a Kona, non-electric, to see about the space. It was pretty zippy but that suv is like a kiddy car, it’s pretty small.

I have driven my Bolt-EV for 19-months - wow, haven't had this much fun since owning my first car back in 1965. SEATS: I'm 6-1, 220-lbs. Initially, the seat felt ''different'' from the comfy seat of my ICE, but after the first week, I didn't notice the difference. I have read that the new model Bolts have improved seat comfort. SUN-GLARE from the dashboard: I trimmed some black cloth and placed it on the dash. $7,500 REBATE: The rebate will be a credit on the tax YOU OWE, or $7.5K WHICHEVER IS LESS. CHARGING: Where I live, there are six public charging stations within walking distance of my house - at no cost to charge. This has been a nice savings. On a long distance trip, I carry my own 240v charge cord (Juice Box because the amps can be adjusted to use with my dryer outlet). This allows me to charge at RV parks when no commercial EV charge stations are available. RANGE, Best Case Scenario: In mild weather, no AC, city driving, I get 300-miles on a full charge. RANGE, Worse Case Scenario: In the cold of winter, heating system on auto, driving 65-mph on the freeway, I get 190-miles on a full charge. TIRES: You will have to buy studded snow-tires for winter driving because using snow-chains will void the warranty (a broken chain link while driving could cause extensive damage to vehicle battery cooling system). No matter which electric vehicle you buy, my grandchildren thank you for helping to protect eco-system of our planet.

I have a 2018 Bolt (17K miles...bought new). I have had five Hyundai's and like the brand a lot (incl. 2 Genesis models). I was hoping the Kona would be a bigger step forward. When I saw the back seat and that, for me, with the driver seat pretty much all the way back, there is virtually NO legroom in the back seat, that really soured me on the car. Admittedly, the Hyundai has some options I'd really like to have (and had in previous Hyundai's) but I find the Bolt almost perfect for my needs with the universally acknowledged exception of front seat comfort. I'm a big guy at 6'2" and my right hip runs into the seat belt latch and console before my spine is in the middle of the seat. That's an issue. BUT overall the Bolt is near enough to perfect that I wouldn't want to lose money to acquire the Kona (or the Kia Niro). If I were a buyer at the moment, I'm not totally sure which of the three would win. I haven't driven the other two. But, I say again, the Bolt has been excellent. I had a BMW i3 (lease) before the Bolt and if it had had even 180 miles of eRange, I'd still have it, but the lease lapsed because BMW changed their stance re: EV's and I felt rather betrayed. With the Bolt (which came in at about the same price as the BMW) the "cost" is in the battery and less in the quality of the interior. The i3 had a great interior and good options but a battery that was less than 1/3 the size of the Bolt's (e.g. 1/3 of the range). BUT after two EV's I'll never go back to the ICE...no not never !! I am a widower and live alone, so the "family sedan" nature of Teslas is something I don't really have need for.

@madmotorcyclist 5 лет назад

@kens97sto171
@kens97sto171 5 лет назад
@@madmotorcyclist The range diminishing is not the problem, the new Nissan leaf has no thermal management at all, no air cooling no liquid cooling. So you DC fast charge it once on a trip period after that the battery will be too hot and you will sit there at the charger for double the time it should take to charge. This problem has been all over the news, Nissan says that they're going to do something about that. but it seems absolutely idiotic to me to have a lithium battery pack with no thermal management at all. Even the Toyota Prius all the way back in 1997 in Japan had air cooling on its nickel metal hydride battery. it seems like a major fail to me. Which is unfortunate because the new leaf is quite nice. Although the range is somewhat limited

@alliejr
@alliejr 5 лет назад
GM interiors are almost inferior to their competition, especially on their lower priced offerings. Why? Likely the accountants in charge of the car programs. Old GM suffered from this and new GM hasn't changed, unfortunately. As if no one at GM has ever driven a Honda, Hyundai or VW. Hyundai and Kia always have simple yet classy interiors, even their hard plastics are high end.
@SimonMichaelBenz
@SimonMichaelBenz 5 лет назад
With the exception of the power train, the Bolt was designed by the Koreans. Same folks who designed the Kona. The plastics are hard but quality hard plastics, they fixed the hard seats for the 2019 model, but you are right they cheaped out on the suspension. In the Chevys defense it was the first to do over 200 miles under 40 grand, so since its an older design they should get some slack.

Actually, the Tesla Model 3 does come in close to the price of the Chevrolet Bolt used in this video. The Bolt they said was a premier version, which starts at 41k and quickly moves up to the 44k range when you add premium interior options and DC fast charging(You really want this if you plan on making any long distance trips). The 45K Tesla Model 3 is in the same price range at this point with the premium interior, and comes standard with fast charging(Supercharging). Also, the $7,500 tax credit is only good to you if you PAY in at least $7,500 in taxes by the time you take all other deductions, so for those of us who don't that doesn't matter either.

Im surprised the reviewers didn't comment on the fact the Bolt battery is encased in steal, while the Kona was covered in aluminum, even though it sits closer to the ground?!?! this is a big deal, I think the negative image Chevy has generated over the years, makes it difficult for a lot of reviewers to see the positives when reviewing the Bolt. Positives tend to be down played or unmentioned while negatives are overblown, like the plastic interior, both cars have cheap plastic interiors and frankly i find the Kona dash to be boring and uninspiring, while the Bolt has all the relevant EV info front and center in your face with a modern tech look. I wonder how many of the Bolt haters here have actually driven one? I've owned one for over a year and love it. The Bolt is more fun than the GTI it replaced, handles great and accelerates faster than the Kona. As to the seats, I've driven it on a 400 mile trip and they never bothered me. I've never experienced the glare that they complained about in the test. The Kona looks like a great car but it is slower and has a back seat you wouldn't put an adult in. It has a smaller screen and worse regenerative braking. These are all big drawbacks. Given the Bolt's better braking, better steering, bigger back seat, bigger info-entertainment screen and faster acceleration, Edmund's choice is a little mystifying.

The Kona does not look like it has space for an infant seat, where the Chevy Bolt can fit two easily. I'm not sure these two really have enough weight to the fact that the Chevy Bolt was built as an EV from inception, which allowed a much shorter hood, giving significantly more space to the passengers. As for the seats, yeah they're narrower then normal but I've driven over 8 hours straight in them and have been way more comfortable then my larger SUV because the bolts seats offer such great support. I'm 270lbs and 6'3", so I guess mileage may vary.

As A Bolt Owner #1 I have never seen glare off the windshield. And we have owned the car for 14 months. #2 Most people do not have a tax liability large enough to take the tax credit. if one has the income to take the tax credit get a model 3. #3 the Tesla model 3 is now available for 45k in the range of both of these cars. #4 the top priced Kona is going to be over 40k just like the Bolt premiere 42k. #5 the sets in the Bolt are just right for all the people that have driven the car, however none of us are over weight. #6 the Tesla and Bolt have a reinforced steel frame supporting the battery, adding to the safety rating. the Kona is not as safe and battery punctures will be an issue. #7 Kona is heavier so real world range will not be as good as the Bolt.

Back seat space is not a problem. I used mine and is astonishing comfortable. My two girls wanted us to buy a big SUV because they loved the Idea of having space. We ended up exchanging our Mini for a second hand CX5 (so plenty of space). In fact, they didn't like the Kona because they felt it had not enough space at the dealership. I was prepared to have long battles about what car to use when we are the four of us because of the space of CX5. Not even once they asked us to switch to the ICE one. They must feel comfortable in the rear seats, for sure. If they were not they would choose the CX5 every ocasion they could. They never do.

I really like the Kona EV. My dad just got a Model 3 and that’s really kind of shockingly fast, but if the Kona stays 5-10k handily underneath the price point of a Model 3, then it’ll be a real winner. Because all the Model 3s coming out now are high-end models whether you like it or not. If someone is looking to replace their car in the next 3 months, the Model 3 isn’t a contender against these two. If you can wait a year or two and extend your line of credit enough to get a Model 3, that seems like a good option, but more financially sensitive buyers should probably hold their horses and look at the Kona or at other soon-to-be-released cars in this price range.

Good review overall. Though a couple of notes. The base 64KWh Kona EV is actually a fair bit more expensive than the Bolt EV in South Korea. So I would expect the Kona EV to be more expensive in North America as well. The Bolt EV is now into it's third model year and will likely be receiving a mid-cycle enhancement by the time the Kona EV actually shows up in any significant numbers in North America. Also the Bolt EV is lighter and faster than the Kona EV. It's nearly a second faster to 60mph. For people in colder climates the Kona EV does have a heat pump which will help a little bit more for cold weather efficiency. I'm suprised the review didn't point out how the battery is not as well integrated. It hangs a couple inches below the chassis which is kinda scary from a road debris standpoint as the battery might be the first thing hit.

Good points. Time will tell what the actual pricing and availability is for the Kona Electric. Something I find interesting about this review is that they are comparing a vehicle that has been sold extensively with a vehicle that is still very much in its honeymoon period. It took the 40 kWh Nissan LEAF being sold to actual owners before rapidgate became apparent. For me, as a Bolt EV owner, I don't see the value the Kona Electric offers over my Bolt EV... as in, it's not something I would trade my Bolt EV in for. It's simply not a significant enough upgrade. And the Kona Electric is not a vehicle I would trade my Volt for. Essentially, the Kona Electric is a great option for those who want to upgrade their short-range EVs or for those who wanted a 200+ mile EV, didn't like the Bolt EV, and couldn't afford the Model 3.
@stevebakker6884
@stevebakker6884 5 лет назад
The Bolt EV has a heat pump too, but other than that very helpful comments. And I'm not surprised to hear that the Kona is more expensive. Hyundai is not likely to be willing to take the kind of losses that GM is on a per car basis. And unless the Kona comes in at 5-7K higher than the Bolt, the exciting news might be that Hyundai has figured out a way to build this class of EV for less than GM. That's assuming this car will be profitable out of the gate. I wonder who is supplying the battery. LG? I wonder if the ground clearance at the battery of the Koan is less than the Bolt?
@erikstephens34
@erikstephens34 5 лет назад
@@stevebakker6884 Bolt EV does not have a heat pump it uses a resistance heater. In South Korea the (South Korean built) Kona is 7% more expensive than the (US built and imported) Bolt EV. So in the US that discrepancy might grow even more. GM makes a positive margin on the Bolt EV. The only question will be if GM sells enough volume to overcome the capitol investment.

Drove a Bolt this weekend. I loved it. Seats weren't an issue for me (5'9") nor was the front DLO. It was peppy and didn't squeal the tires (but I didn't push it hard). Either Car and Driver or Motortrend put different tires on their Bolt and its handling increased a good bit, but the range decreased some. Haven't driven the Kona but just looking at it would make me pick the Bolt. But please, before you write off the Bolt because of "uncomfortable" seats and " perfectly wrong" windshield angle," I respectfully suggest all you guys check in with the other half of the driving population. I am a 5'4 female, and I have spent my ENTIRE LIFE riding in or driving cars and trucks where my feet don't hit the floor at a comfortable angle, the seat belt cuts across my jugular, and the windshield glare at night is so bad I can hardly see (my husband never complains of any of these things)! The Chevy Bolt is the first car I have ever driven that fits me like a glove. I LOVE the seats. The windshield doesn't glare, and the seat belt actually rides in a spot that won't cut my head off in an accident. Not only that, it is a fun, sporty drive! I guess it depends on whether you would rather have a super fun driving experience or a *pretty* looking dashboard (which, by the way, I actually like quite a lot, thank you very much). The Kona is a slightly updated Bolt essentially. With the exception of the drivetrain including the battery "firmware" for lack of a better word, the Bolt was designed in Korea by LG Chem and others. The Bolt is a little quicker and sportier, but otherwise I think the Kona is more refined. I suspect the reason the Koreans are so far ahead of everyone except Tesla and GM, is because GM did a technology swap with LG Chem and the automotive consortium in Korea. I suspect Kia/Hyundai got GMs EV drivetrain tech, which is extensive, along with GMs Voltec/EV technology in General, in exchange for a free car design along with controls and electronics plus battery from the Koreans. This is why the Koreans are so far ahead of the Europeans Japanese and Americans save Tesla and GM, because they have everything GM knew in EV tech plus what they have added since the the tech exchange. GM knew Hyundai could further the EV cause better than they can simply because GM has poor mind-share in the industry, fewer people are likey to gamble on this new technology if GM leads the way sub 40K, but if Hyundai Kia lead, EVs will catch on quicker and then GM can leverage their experience as they watch component prices fall.

@@miloe436 Right that is the "official" story, but in reality GM Korea/Daewoo Korea and the Hyundai/Kia group are a very tight group, that's how it works in a country like Korea, its not like here where Ford, GM, Chrysler are all completely independent competitors with little to no government influence or assistance. GM has stated the design is theirs, but LG chem produces it. Designing something, then figuring out the most efficient way to build it are two different things. The technology sharing is the only way to explain the nearly identical design and specs between the Kona and Bolt. Every automaker has had a different take on EV tech so far, with the exception of Hyundia/Kia and GM. Either the tech was shared or the GM Daewoo team leaked it to their countrymen which i find to be less likely.

I want an EV for a ultra quiet drive. Hows the hwy noise in both of these cars? Are they typical subcompact noisy or close to luxury car quiet? Thx

wasabi9111 I have a bolt and it’s fairly close to a regular car on the highway. Maybe just a touch quieter but not luxury car levels. Of course at slow speeds and waiting at stop lights it’s blissfully quiet.

wasabi9111 The video shows how quiet EVs are. My Leaf is very quiet. The tire/Road surface combo is a variable. Thanks

Ramon Cardona hows the wind noise? Most subcompact gets really noise at hwy speed with loud wind and tire noise. I was wondering if subcompact ev is any better.

The Bolt is not loud on the highway, but I wouldn't call it luxury car quiet. My CTS is noticeably quieter than the Bolt.

wasabi9111 Very low wind noise even at speeds above 65 mph. Nissan was forced to design the headlight lens to what many call an ugly shape to decrease wind noise at the side rear view mirror housings. Tire/road noise is negligible. 2011 Nissan Leaf. A friend has a new Tesla Model 3 that is extremely quiet. Thanks

When is the Kona Electric release date? I notice in this video (at 3:25) the Kona has California dealer plates.

What road is that? The 74 from Coachella over the mountain towards San Diego?

Can’t buy the Kona outside of California. If you can find it at all.

You can buy it here in Europe. I think Europe is pretty much outside California. Am i correct?

I've gotten 300 miles out of my Bolt on a single charge, and I'm not a particularly careful driver, so take the range estimate with a grain of salt.

I average over 420km in temps above 19C. This is well above the EPA rating.

The fact that it's even close bolt is much more available and cheaper, actual price not sticker price. Easy win for Bolt!

I purchased the bolt in 2017. I love it. It now has about 36,000 miles on it and it is so much fun to drive. The back seat is very roomy. I will not go back to a gas car.
