I've driven both of these along with the Volt. I'm kind of surprised how many GM bashers are in the comments; Tesla as a company's not always perfect either. The Model 3's obviously the best driver of the three. Better acceleration, better steering and handling, better road feel, better driving position. It's just more fun. The Bolt's surprisingly good as well. It's not a 3, but I've found it still drives much better than most compact cars and definitely better than I'd expect from a tall hatch. The Volt...it's OK. It's certainly competent and can take back roads easily, but it feels a bit disconnected from the road so you really have it push it to have fun with it. So for the driving experience I'd say 3 > Bolt > Volt. Design and quality are best in the 3, but not by a huge amount. The interior still uses plastic, and the guy's right - the steering wheel is pretty mundane with basic materials. Panels aren't always lined up well, and issues with paint and glass have popped up online (sometimes the display models in Tesla stores have these flaws). The Volts are pretty solid with plenty of padding and plushness in their own right, but the material quality and overall design definitely feel cheaper than the 3. Then there's the Bolt. I don't know what GM was thinking, but the design's just bleh, the seats are indeed terrible, and there's a lot of hard plastic and loose trim. It feels more like a used Spark or a Sonic. For overall build quality, I'd say Volt > 3 > Bolt. Material quality and design? 3 > Volt > Bolt. One thing I find very strange is the infotainment response time in the Bolt vs. Volt. As a lot of people here point out, the Bolt is NOT responsive in this video (it's slow in my personal experience too). For some reason the 2019 Volt's is super-quick and responds immediately, just as quick as Tesla's. And yet...supposedly the Bolt and Volt share the same system. Even the pre-2019 Volt systems were faster than the Bolt's. The only thing I can figure is maybe it wasn't designed with the Bolt in mind, and the Bolt handles more functions through its screen than the Volt does, so maybe it's too much for the processor or something. Whatever the reason, the Bolt's infotainment is often remarkably slow for any modern system. GM also chose not to include adaptive cruise control on any Bolt but made it a Volt option back in 2017, so there also a few odd equipment differences between the two (all Premier Volts also have park assist; to my knowledge that's something else unavailable on any Bolt). All things being equal, a 3 would likely be better than a Bolt (the Volt, being a plug-in hybrid, is a bit of a different animal here). But price changes the game. GM hit its EV thing shortly after Tesla; I'm writing this in June so at the moment tax credits are equal for both. GM is *heavily* discounting its Bolts though. Dealers near me have some loaded 2019s listed at $10,000 off before tax credits or state rebates, and a few have had them for at least 8k off for months now. Technically GM isn't lowering the Bolt's price, but with incentives and dealer discounts a 40k Model 3 vs. a 30k Bolt becomes a different equation.

@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 5 лет назад
@@davidbeppler3032 It's a great business plan for a few months. It's probably the only place they can sell Bolts until the Model 3 arrives. GM is so shortsighted as to be pitiful. They could have owned the EV market starting 20 years ago with the incredibly advanced EV1. Instead they crushed them all so they could make more trucks and SUVs. They're still only very reluctantly making relatively few EVs and barely saleable ones at that. It's also totally expectable behavior for an entrenched incumbent.

@SimonMichaelBenz
@SimonMichaelBenz 5 лет назад
@@davidbeppler3032 GM is not worried in the least bit, we know this because A. they are offering very stingy incentives on Bolts right now, making it harder for dealers to sell them, and B. GM looses cash on each Bolt sold. I suspect they want slow sales in the US because of the tax incentive running out soon. Its also important to keep in mind the ICE makers have no interest in selling EVs unless they can make money doing it. As long as the Bolt is selling at a loss GM is ok with not selling them quickly, they are not worried about its sales compared to the M3. The ICE makers all know there will be no M3s left on the road in 7 years because out of warranty Teslas become money pits, this will soon be recognized by all, and people will just buy electric Toyotas, and Hondas, or even Cadillacs with their superior Super Cruise technology. Tesla should be worried as the ICE makers ramp up electric offerings not the other way around.

@overnightclassic2
@overnightclassic2 4 года назад
@@LordLoMR2 You can buy a Bolt for less than $30K new now. People are seeing as low as $27K. With that I think the BOLT is arguably a better car as the range is closer to a long range model 3 vs the standard range+ (Chevy is very conservative with their range compared to Tesla). The BOLT is a lot less showy and is less likely a target of theft/damage. Charging is misleading because depending where you live there are MORE DC fast chargers than superchargers so it's possible to go places a Tesla cannot. Back seat room is a lot better on BOLT than Model 3 which makes it a better choice for carrying passengers. If you have to roadtrip, Tesla is the obvious choice because supercharging is faster and the BOLT seats look uncomfortable.

Another thing is looks people praise it so much but for me I'm not a fan of the dentist quality headlights on Tesla... Don't know if you know what I mean the fuzzy white dentist lights they shine on you that the head lights... And the driving position and dash board for me is a little too minimalist. With the wood trip and very flat dash board, futuristic car? I feel like I'm in my kitchen with a big tablet on the table of it rather than in the cockpit of an electric car of the future. And I love JDM cars and muscle cars and new technology but for some reason it can't replace my love for fast sports cars even if the Tesla's is faster, there's more to it than raw speed and certainly doesn't make me feel like I'm sitting in futuristic position just because the style is minimalistic... Take the time to drive a sports coupe then drive a model 3 and really have an unbiased mind you'll see what I mean . I was expecting sedan sports ride quality and didn't get it. I was expecting sedan rear seating room and it's more a compact sedan seating room like a Honda Civic. Will have to go more for the Tesla model x or the other bigger 100k sedan version.... Very fair point about the charging network in Canada. In The States, I have not had ANY problems finding a Super Charger, or a Level 2 Charger. Some Supermarkets have them too. It’s most convenient to do your weeks shopping, and charge up your car for the week at the same time... for a tenth of the price of gas. Investing in a “dryer plug” in the garage to add about 20 miles in an hour is what most of us do with EV’s as well.

Why do Tesla fanboys go on and on about long-range trips and charging networks? 99% of us drive less than 100 miles/day maybe stretching to 200 miles on a busy weekend. The _real_ genius of electric is that you charge at home at night and your gas tank is _ALWAYS_ _FULL_ . If you're doing frequent >500 mile road trips, let's face it, the electric car wasn't the best choice for you. Let's get the 99% use-case situation solved before we worry about the edge cases. For the 99%ers, we need _REALIABILITY_ which is something Teslas does not deliver: at all.
@anthonypelchat

@@alliejr You have to realize that there are a huge amount of idiots that refuse to see that 99% of your driving will be much easier in an EV then an ICE because they want to take a trip once or twice a year and are scared that the trip would take several hours longer. Also, when you look at the price of these cars, especially Teslas, it's hard to justify the price if you feel that you need a second car to go visit your parents every now and then. Tesla fixed most these worries with the Super Charger network, which doesn't slow down a long range trip much, if you plan it right. Currently, all other EVs (at least in the US) are nearly useless for trips. Granted, you can easily rent a car for trips, which several people would do anyways. But it still scares people. This why anyone who loves Tesla's point it out. It really makes living with a Tesla a much better experience then any other EV and better than ICE cars in most cases. You also have several people who either hate Tesla or hate EVs for one reason or another and spread as much fear about owning one as possible. If you love Tesla's or EVs, you counter these fears with positive statements.

I own a bolt EV (my daily)Tesla 3 performance(wife’s daily) and a Hellcat(weekend toy). The Tesla is definitely better than the bolt in just about every way. It’s worth the extra cost imo. Still, the bolt is very fun to drive and is practical. The Bolt driving position feels higher, rides smoother and the electric motor some how sounds cooler than the Tesla imo. The bolt acceleration is quick enough for most situations, especially between 20-70mph. Btw, heads up display would have made sense but the Tesla digital mph in the middle is easy to get used to. Hellcat is my favorite. It is the most thrilling blasting down the highway, is the most comfortable and sounds the best of course.

Yes the hellcat for me there's something about the roar and feel of a sports car the spirit of it. Can't be replaced to me by electric performance yet even if electric is better in speed and acceleration. Can't replace my favorite V8s and JDMs...

Right now, I'm pretty split on what car I want next year. The biggest reason is price. The Model 3 on average is selling for around $43,000. The Bolt, despite the MSRP is selling for around $25k-$32 depending on the dealer. And the used market especially where you can get a Bolt with very few miles for around $20k. A $10K to $17K difference is a massive amount of money. Money that can be spent on a Level 2 charger at home or an additional payment to my mortgage. Or a battery replacement once the original battery dies. I'm mainly driving around town and very rarely venture out on road trips with my car. So distance isn't a big issue. The Model 3 beats the Bolt in looks, but the Bolt actually isn't too bad in person. Not attractive, but not offensive either. But Tesla has better software and Superchargers. And while I have almost no interest in Autopilot, it is still a nice thing to have. I'm just not sure anymore.

Thanks for the posting. Curious however as to why compare the two? Only maybe because they're both electric and have similar range... well OK? They're completely different cars, for different consumers. And remember, the lowest spec Model 3 is still $10k more than the highest spec Bolt in Canada. So you'd expect it to be better. I think it's better to compare the Bolt against the upcoming Hyundai Kona and the Kia Niro. These are all similar platforms with similar price tags, all aimed at the same buyer. It's correct to mention the Bolt beat both of these to market by two years. The Bolt is relatively unchanged in three model years and up against both of these brand new offerings.

And it's a sedan that not very practical. The range your talking about is interesting.. I've seen people in California getting 300+ miles. I drove both back to back.. There is a simple reason that Tesla are winning so far. Because they only make electric cars. Every other manufacturer is hedging and compromising designs to avoid cannibalizing their own profitable car sales with a low-margin EV. In many cases (Hyundai, GM) I don't think they could actually source enough batteries to handle a runaway success. Despite the very good design and engineering of the Bolt, GM want to get into EVs the same way a 5 year-old gets into a hot bath-tub. From their perspective, a rapid shift to EVs means leaving profits on the table (for the manufacturer *AND* for the dealership network.) But for the rest of us in the developed world, a rapid shift to EVs should be viewed as a huge win for the atmosphere, the oceans, our cities, our energy infrastructure, and our health. So the Hell with the established manufacturers. I will either goad them into selling me a good car despite themselves or grit my teeth and pay for a Tesla.
@paulm6481
@paulm6481 5 лет назад
@@TaiViinikka very well said, In the case of GM, they already killed their prior electric car (EV1) once. They even just killed their hybrid (Volt). I think one thing mainline auto manufacturers don't get is no one associates an Audi, or a Mercedes or a BMW or Ford or Toyota with electric. If I were them, I make a new brand and then lump every electric car under it. For example, Ford could come up with a Edison brand. Then they can have Edison sedan, coupe, SUV, truck. Until then, the snob appeal of a Tesla wins every day. People know what Tesla stands for. What does Audi eTron stand for? It is still a Audi. And it goes back to your point, mainline manufacturers are still hesitant to lose profitability of their ICE vehicles. Meantime, Tesla is killing it.
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 5 лет назад
@@TaiViinikka The incumbent car makers have clearly demonstrated that they don't want to make EVs. They have not committed to the multi-billion dollar battery factories needed to drive down battery costs to build EVs profitably. For example, GM builds a few thousand Bolts per month and loses money on every one they sell. In contrast Tesla spent billions on Gigafactory and sells their cars at about 28% gross profit mostly due to their lower battery costs. This is a classic case of incumbents being disrupted by an innovative startup. Henry Ford did the same thing to horse cart builders a century ago. Apple disrupted Nokia with the smart phone, etc.
