Hyundai Kona driving 510 km/318 mi in one charge

I tested highway range of 90 km/h, 56 mph and managed to get higher numbers than WLTP (which is a different test procedure). Before you guys complain that this is too slow: It's actually quite relevant for many people. Some people will even average lower speed and therefore achieve higher range.

While Tesla seem to be grabbing all the headlines with the Model 3, in terms of price and range and the EV for the masses requirement, this seems to be a more significant car.

@@bjornnyland Hi Bjorn, I live in Ottawa Canada, and the Kona retails for about $52 k. That's for the Ultimate trim level (leather seats, power driver seat, sunroof, upgraded sound etc.) I don't know what is available in other countries, but here in Canada, it's only available in 2 trim levels; Premium ($47 k), and Ultimate.

WOW 510km, I cant wait to hypermile this thing it will do even more!! This is a hilarious and very useful video!! :-) update: I think you should become a full time car reporter. Get given the latest and greatest for a week and be paid to produce video appraisal like you have with the EV's. For example your Kona footage is far far better than absolutely anything else I can find from all the major "Auto journalists" To get that kind of advertising Hyundai would have had to pay millions. Looking forward to some more on the Kona and other EV's Soon please.

Will be interesting to see if any Hyundai Kona Electric owner can go above the magical 1000 kilometers EV hypermiling on one charge that only the Model 3 has managed so far. Considering that Bjørn manages 510 kilometers with AC on and a decent speed there is a good chance. Big question off cause is who will have the patience to find out, as it for the Model 3 takes 32 hours to reach that range at the optimal speed(around 40 km/h)

Thanks again for a great video Bjorn. I have to say i am very impressed by the efficiency of this car, especially considering the form factor and low aerodynamic efficiency. I would not dare to say it has less interesting options than the Tesla. I still have to see the first Tesla that comes with a HUD for example. And don't forget that for many people the range is an important factor. And Hyundai is showing us they have that under control.

Karen Pease The Kona has AEB standard, and in our market even most base models of cars are getting AEB as standard, but at least we can get the Kona as the Model 3 is still at least a year away for us. Price difference AWD? Cool what does your AWD Model 3 currently cost? Not everyone wants an all glass roof that will be a pain to keep clean and free of water marks.

Here in the UK I find that Tesla drivers are the rudest stuck-up pric£s I've ever met at a charger. Was juicing my lowly leaf at a free rapid in Inverness, scotland the other day and came close to punching a guy driving a model s after he went into a tirade about me being there for 'hours' . I had been there around 45 mins and my phone number was on a card in my window if anyone wanted me to move urgently. what a turkey.

Ordered my Hyundai Kona 64Kwh Ultimate, in March, I have to wait until September for delivery and in the meantime I’m having a charger installed on my drive. I’m hoping that visits to filling stations are a thing of the past or at least so rare as to be insignificant. I currently refill my Hyundai Tucson 4 times a month, £115 to fill it and I get around 425 miles out of that, that’s £460 per calendar month! The savings I’ll make on fuel will be significant and assuage any fear I have about range, charging station availability etc Thanks for your video, it’s very informative!

Hyundai seem to do range better than other EV and this is an SUV (I know not a "true" SUV) but this car is not as aerodynamic as the Ioniq and other more aerodynamic cars, yet still achieves amazing efficiency.
@kriss2005
@kriss2005 6 лет назад
Lol, it's not a SUV. Not even a CUV. It's at e-Golf levels. Even less luggage capacity. People comparing this to a Model X are insane. You don't compare a Golf to a X5 just because both have a combustion engine.
@Hans-gb4mv
@Hans-gb4mv 6 лет назад
It's a crossover. It's a small car with an SUV look. And that look makes it a lot less aerodynamic compared to something like a Leaf, Tesla or Ioniq.

You gotta love it. One day you are called a Tesla hater, the next, part of the Tesla cult ... . Don't even get what pointing out that this is not an SUV has to do with Tesla. This vehicle does not qualify to be a SUV for many reasons: size, ground clearance, drive train, ... Think Jeep or RAV4
@gregandkaruna6674
@gregandkaruna6674 6 лет назад
Hans Roes It's an SUV style I know it's not a true "SUV" but my original point was it is not as aerodynamic as the Ioniq and other low coefficient cars, yet it still achieves amazing efficiency.

Great video! I just bought a Kona electric here in Fresno, California about 3 weeks ago so I am highly interested in the work you're doing to find the ultimate limits of the Kona's EV technology! So far I have managed to touch 6 miles per kWh driving around town, but currently have 5.4 miles per kWh showing for my last trip around town. Town driving is where EV's really perform and the Kona seems to be very efficient. I've been experimenting with using regen in different ways, and closely monitoring what makes the car push above 5 mi/kWh. I have noticed that with regen defaulted to 1 or 2, there is always a slight drag on the system even with the accelerator applied. By driving steady-state with regen on, when I reduce it using the paddles I can feel the car suddenly "unload". Also, for initial coasting between traffic lights I prefer to start with zero regen and let the vehicle "glide" since it rolls with almost zero resistance compared to an ICE car. In ECO mode I find the Kona will accelerate on par with most ICE cars with gentle accelerator pressure, up to around 40mph or so, then gently ease back to eliminate the acceleration bar on the instrument panel and let the car coast up to the next stopping point, adding regen one arrow at a time to slow to a stop while adding back some energy. I try to only add regen when I'm off the accelerator so as to not have any "waste" of electrons due to that apparently slight overlap in regnerative braking with throttle on. I have managed to consistently stay in the mid-5 mi/kWh using this method of town driving. By my calculation, an average of 5.2 miles per kWh using 90% of the battery (10% remaining before charge), I can drive 305 miles. As for using AC and heat, I find AC uses very little power compared to heat, which is great because here in central California we have a lot of hot days and very few cold! Within that I only use AC as needed to cool the cabin and I also make use of recirculation so as not to have to cool hot air coming in. Same for heat...as you noticed during your drive, even with the environmental control system off there is still air being admitted from outside. The way to control this and make better use of heating electrons is to keep recirculation on - that makes the uncontrolled and unwanted air coming in stop. This way I can turn on heat only as long as needed to remove the chill from the cabin, then back off, since the warmed air isn't being exhausted away. When using AC I leave the system "on" but turn on or off the AC button as needed and the effect on mileage without AC applied is zero. So far I have not tried to hypermile on the highway because I am commuting to work and often don't have the luxury of driving slower in freeway traffic, or the additional time needed. This is what impresses me about your test. You got over 300 miles range driving at mostly steady speed on the highway - an electric car's worst performance envelope! One reason the Kona is so efficient compared to Tesla is motor size. I don't know what the specs are on Tesla's Model 3, but just looking at published acceleration numbers it would appear the motor is drawing more power than the Kona motor. Just as with ICE vehicles, a bigger motor is a thirstier motor! The Kona accelerates 0-60 mph in a little over 6 seconds which is better than most ICE cars including a few "performance" models, but this is still over a second slower than Tesla claims for the Model 3. I think this is where the Kona is also beating the competition. They're using a powerful motor, but not overly so. As for acceleration in in stoplight driving, unless a "Muscle car" is sitting there with the engine already revved up to "launch," nothing out there is going to leave a traffic light like the Kona does! With only 200 horsepower, an ICE car making 2 times that will eventually overhaul it, but not in the normal distance between traffic signals. I remember rolling up behind a Tesla Roadster one time in my Dodge Charger and when the light changed, that car - despite making less horsepower and torque than the engine in my Charger, left so fast the only way I could have even hoped to match it would have been from a standstill ready to do a drag launch! Here in central California, cars such as the leaf and Ioniq EV are of limited interest due to their paltry range, while Tesla has been running away with the EV market. I noticed that Hyundai never stocked or sold the Ioniq EV here (all are sold down in LA), this is one of the first places the Kona electric arrived and I'm sure it's because of the range capability that can finally garner interest from the "wait-and-see" adopters. I've been commuting 80 miles round trip to work in mine, and the more I drive it, the more I like it! I started out with just the supplied 120 volt wall charger that was adequate for topping off though it only gave about 40 miles of range for 10 hours charging time. I made use of DCFC a few times to replentish the battery quickly, and then decided to install a 240v 50A dedicated outlet and now use a 40A level 2 charger at home that averages around 7.4 kWh and really gets the job done! Now I'm able to plug it in every other, or every third night and have the car programmed to start charging off-peak. With Blue Link I can sit comfortably inside and see the Kona's SOC, range available, and even start it charging if I wish. I can also alter the programmed charge times from Blue Link, as well as turn on AC or heat prior to heading out in the morning! I was complaining to my daughter that it didn't have remote start until it occurred to me that an electric car doesn't need remote start!

@bjornnyland Hi Bjorn, Thanks for the great video. This was JUST the video I was looking for. I drive Uber here in Ottawa Canada and was looking for the right vehicle to do the job. I do believe I've found my vehicle. . . . The Hyundai Kona Electric ! ! ! :) I had the opportunity to sit in one in a Hyundai dealership here in Ottawa. A very rare experience because full electric vehicles are rare to find in stock at ANY dealership here due to being in such high demand I have very specific requirements in what I wanted, and the Kona delivers; 1. Range; very important if you drive Uber 2. DC Fast charge capability; a MUST MUST have to minimize downtime charging so I can get back on the road earning money 3. Leather upholstery; Definitely a plus when you have many people getting in and out of your car [otherwise known as a "high traffic interior". Leather will hold up better to repeated use, spillage, dirt, doesn't absorb odours (food, perfume, pet smells, body scents and odors] and easy to clean. Will last longer and keep it's looks longer than cloth/fabric seats 4. Flat floor; no hump in the middle like ICE cars have, since there is no transmission. makes it easier for passengers to get in and out of. Many times when more than one passenger gets in on the same side of the car at curbside, one has to slide over for the other person. Fabric tends to "grab on" to clothes, whereas on leather seats, you slide easier. 5. Rear door is wide enough; the opening at the seat to floor level is good. I also like that they put an ample amount of durable hard plastics around the opening. With so many people getting in and out of my back door on my 2012 Mazda 3, there are already a few nicks and scratches on the plastic trim, and the cloth portion of the seat near the door opening gets the most punishment due to being hit with the foot as people step out of the car. On the Kona, the leather portion of the seat stops a few inches from the floor, where hard plastic goes the rest of the way. 6. Ample space in hatch area; Room for 2 large suitcases and other small items. Often when I do airport pickups to and from, if there is more than one passenger, I need cargo space to accommodate a few large bags. Obviously no car except SUV's and handle those gargantuan ethnic travel suitcases that will even hold the kitchen pantry, but I do believe it has enough space for what I need. 7. Ground clearance; Ottawa winters can be brutal, as in with snow accumulation. and the extra ground clearance will come in handy here. Another area where a bit higher ground clearance comes in handy, is for the passengers getting in and out of the vehicle. This little extra height makes it easier for seniors, or people with disabilities to enter and exit more easily. 8. Ventilated seats; A must have especially for the driver seat. Right now with the heat we are going through over here, having to wear long pants [yes I have a dress code. . . I do NOT wear shorts, flip flops, or tank tops when I'm working. . . shame on whoever does drive Uber and dresses like that], in this heat !?!?!?! well, the back of my shirt and pants are damp with sweat almost all day long. 9. Extra USB charge ports and wireless charging; A definite plus for me. I always have both gens of APPLE and ANDROID cables for when a passenger needs a boost for their phone while in transit. My passengers use it all the time and really appreciate this amenity I provide. 10. Carpets on floor; The floor carpets seem to be lowpile and quite durable. Exactly what I need for a high traffic interior. 11. Nice looking interior; I'm quite pleased with with look of the interior. If I was to say, compare it to the Chevrolet Bolt, its a WINNER over the BOLT. I find the Bolt's interior looks. . . well. . . cheap :( But not the Kona, it DEF shows like a premium interior. Anyway, I wanted to say again, that I really enjoyed your video Bjorn. You gave us plenty of information on "real world" range usage and a few more tips too. I'll be looking for more of your videos, and I'll let you know when I get my Kona :D Oh almost forgot. . . ya just earned yourself a new Subscriber AND I clicked the NOTIFY button too ;)

WOW, this EV has really good Range! I think that we will see much Konas soon on the Street... When Hyundai can produce enough. :) If it had also 3-Phase Charging this thing would "sells himself like cut bread" as we in germany say. :D

MrTechfreak95 that’s always been my amusement with Hyundai - yes they make amazingly efficient, good looking cars that sell like hot cakes (what we say in Australia), but they cannot produce anywhere near enough, so they don’t... surely you would work your supply chain that hard so you could sell as many as possible, but apparently not...

Hyundai was the THIRD largest car manufacturer in 2016. They were fifth in 2017, but with really close numbers to both Ford and GM. I think they do produce quite a few :-).
@Specwinclean

I’m not saying they don’t produce many, I’m saying they don’t enough, and certainly when it comes to the krona, I’d there’s more than a 2 month wait, they’ve learnt nothing and are being self destroying.

Very cool test! Im hoping the Kia Niro EV will also so efficient like the Kona. The technical data are very similar, the Niro is slightly bigger and maybe heavier, but should also made around 450 - 480km. So im waiting for yout test with Niro :)

Thanks, great video. Hoping that the Kona EV will be coming to South Africa (SA). SA only have the BMWi3, Leaf and soon the Jag i-Pace. Not enough charging stations. Hoping that will improve soon.

Great video!! Lots of people asking about towing, the ICE Kona can tow 1250kg braked and 600kg un-braked so they make a tow bar. The vehicle is a std Kona with batteries and motor so the same bolt holes should be available for a tow bar. Cannot see anything in the way/out of the ordinary around the back end that would stop the tow bar being fitted. Being heavier than the ICE it's probably more stable and may have bigger breaks as it has to stop a heavier battery vehicle so could be even better than std. It sounds like someone at Hyundai forgot some of us want tow bars even if it's for a garden trailer so we don't ruin our nice new vehicles.

this is the most practical ev for me in this price range. i was holding out for the base battery model3 because of the torque and drivability. we'll see if there's enough quick charging around like tesla for those leaving the province or state

Great test vid! Would love to see how the Kona EV's sister, the Niro EV stacks up against it for range with the same battery. For me the Niro seems built with better materials and is slightly larger, but I can't ignore that range....

Agree, the Kona is more efficient, and is in the long range turf of Tesla. I-Pace does appear to be thirsty. Looking forward to your range test of an I-Pace sometime soon.

I've got this car, and in short range city driving the fuel economy is nuts, 500+ is easily possible driving at or slightly above the posted speed limits. Could easily do my commute for over a week without recharging, although I recharge anyways to keep the car in the 50-80% battery range.

I remember someone commenting on one of the stock market channels. He said...You don't want to be in a business that is competing with the South Koreans...because they will drive your profit margins down to a scalpel's edge. Well, we'll see if Hyundai is going to be the first working man's econobox electric car. I personally hate paying for gas...so I'd be a buyer.

The Ioniq also regen at 100%. I did a test in the mountain in Austria regen down hill at 100%. It stops regen after only about 2 km and then you need to use the brakes. Nice the the Kona can set a charge limited so you can use the regen in the mountains.
@rob200cm
@rob200cm 6 лет назад
Warning noob question : ) So it stops regen after 2km because it was currently 100%? It wouldn't do that if you started at 90% right?
@MacGuyver85
@MacGuyver85 6 лет назад
Correct. The car only stops regen when the battery is full. As long as it isn't full it will regen. Makes sense because during regen the battery is charged. If the battery is full the energy can't be dumped thus no regen.

12:01 "Even when the climate control is off...I still feel a little bit of circulation [fan]." That's because your vents are still open and your driving at 90 kmh. If you press the recirc button, it will close the air vents and prevent outside air from entering the cabin.
@Tjita1
@Tjita1 4 года назад
Bjørn, the airflow you feel with the climate system off is just ram air going in the intake. Most cars do this if you don't put it in recirc before switching it off.
