I broke my machine and I need your help

This eye rolling machine is around 75 years old and I broke one of the teeth off the gripping part of the eye roller.
Not only do I not know how these things are made, I also believe that it needs to be made out of a certain type of metal as well. Mild steel will not be sufficient, so it would have to be a tool steel or a wear plate or something.
If you can help me out or know someone that can help me out that would be great. You can contact me at www.simcoespring.com or just leave a comment down below.
Hopefully one of you guys can help me get started ‪@Abom79‬ ‪@AlecSteele‬ ‪@FireballTool‬ ‪@ThisOldTony‬

The variation in tooth angle and only needing one piece makes this perfect to do on a shaper. Fireball tool on here has a Cincinnati 36'' Shaper and has done work with others. He might make it just for the content.

Scott, If there are any machine job shops in your area, I would contact them. That shouldn't be terribly hard to duplicate, I would think the teeth could be made on a mill with a little effort. Also if you find some one that can duplicate it, make sure to make it of a similar type of material, which might need to be hardened after fabrication. Also, if you find someone that can make one, have them make two or three. Think ahead.
@simcoespring
@simcoespring Год назад
not a bad idea, getting two or three made. Could just make all of them out of a 16" bar and just cut it to length.
@2hotscottpro
@2hotscottpro Год назад
That’s a good ideal,16”

@raywach2571 Год назад
@@simcoespring cut them to length before hardening. I think the original must have been hardened or the teeth would have rounded instead of breaking.

Hello Scott; I would contact a number of machine shops for a replacement. Then I would very carefully grind down the broken tooth area and put shim stock or washers behind it to use it until the new one arrives. Like your videos.
@simcoespring
@simcoespring Год назад
I'm extremely hesitant on modifying this part, mostly because it is still useful. If i can get a new one made, then I can test it out while keeping the old one as a backup.

Multiple good machinists have youtube channels and you can probably send an email to them and see who is interested and maybe do a Collab, IE make a video machining the parts etc. Do not redesign the tooth angle, there is a reason they are arranged in the arc they have and the angle they are machined in.

A machine shop should be able to duplicate this part or even possibly build it up and recut the teeth. Quick fix might be to weld up the broken section and reprofile it with a dremel.

I can make that jaw. Not terribly complicated at all to do. Could be done on the mill or a shaper like I make regular bench vise jaws out of tool steel, hardened and tempered to about 55 Rockwell works nicely. I think Keith Rucker had a video on making vise jaws a while back. Surely there is a small job shop around you that could help you out. You should think about looking for a used Bridgeport style vertical mill to make stuff like this and learn how to use it. Very versatile machine to have in the shop.

Scott, you could contact Topper Machine, LLC in Wisconsin. Josh the owner has a RU-vid channel and he runs a manual only machine shop. He does exellent work. I've been a subscriber for awhile to both your channel and Josh's. Guy Franks

I am thinking base material should be 4140 or 4340 and heat treat to Rockwell "C" scale 54 to 57. Anyone with a vertical mill can use an end mill to make this. A sine or tilting plate or an angle vise or tilt the mill head to make this. ---Doozer

Clean the Part an put it with the funky side down on a flatbed scanner together with a ruler for scale. Anyone with a CAD software and this scan can make a fast technical drawing of it. You can send the drawing to any machine shop and go with the one best suited for the job.

I'd be reaching out to "This Old Tony" he's done many collabs before. He can measure the geometry of the tooth pattern and the hardness of the material and reproduce a pair to match. If you're not aware of his channel I can absolutely recommend his videos, they are both informative and hilarious. www.youtube.com/@ThisOldTony

If you just want to fix what you have to get going then grind off the damaged area, preheat, weld up with hard facing rods and grind the teeth back in by hand.
@simcoespring

not sure that i would have the skill level to be able to grind some teeth back into that piece.

Very similar to a vice jaw. Get one for a four inch record or Wilton perhaps an have those teeth duplicate in a shaping machine or on a mill. Vice jaws come in pairs and you probably may use the old ones to recut?

interesting idea. I have a milling machine. The main problem I have too, which i forgot to mention, is which material to use so it doesn't break again.

That sure looks like something out of a crop processor in the forage harvester. They have hardened teeth, they’re rough while being sharp and long lasting.
@Graveltrucking
@Graveltrucking Год назад
A good machine shop should be able to make that. They'd have to use mild steel, then temper it. A heavy knurled surface would give you enough bite into red to white hot steel.
@mikedee8876
@mikedee8876 Год назад
looks like something that would be done in a shaper....a custom one-off piece.....and be slightly harder than your springs.
@simcoespring
@simcoespring Год назад
the spring steel we roll in it would be red hot, so that wouldn't be a problem. However it would have to be a hardened or harden-able material so it won't just roll and bend and mush and break under use.

You got to replace those every 75 years or so lol. Looks like a job for Keith Rucker of Vintage Machinery. He would probably make a video of him making it and we could all see how its done. The original might have been made with a shaper.

looks to me like the part that broke off is'nt supposed to carry any load. Possibly form the pivot point wearing over the years it moved the jaw out further??? if thats the case maybe you can insert a shim behind the jaw to bring it closer to the material

Can you duplicate in some spring steel cutoffs. Drill and counterbore. Use an angle grinder with a flap wheel to create the taper then with thin cut off discs to carefully grind some teeth. Just to literally keep you rolling till you can get 2 or 3 replacements machined. Machining several lengths of bar before cutting it apart would be best.. You did not put up a good image of the end shapes. Almost any machine shop could duplicate that. Depending on the shape of the teeth. Doing it on a horizontal mill if they have a cutter. One you could make might have a bunch of 1/4-20 tapped holes. Allen set screws threaded in to act as gripper teeth from the back side.

I have one of them old eyebenders laying around, probably about 2" of dust on it. I went and looked and the jaws we have for it are different. The tooth plate isn't curved, it is square.
@bryanzillitto1910
@bryanzillitto1910 Год назад
The one I have is more squared too.
@simcoespring
@simcoespring Год назад
I don't think that having it square or rounded would change much. Because I can adjust the depth of the "gripper" I'm not sure it would matter now. Interesting. As for the spare plate, I wouldn't want to ruin a machine just for one part.

If you have one made, have two or more made or made in a long piece so you can cut more for future use. One off items are expensive to replicate.

That plate there looks almost Identical to the removable ones I have here on my Table Vice.. if not mistaken it too is from the late 40s early 50s? Just a thought mate, you may be able to find something like that ? Not sure but thought id add my 1 cent . Cheers.
@simcoespring
@simcoespring Год назад
I do believe it was made some time in the 1950s the thing that messes with me is the curve of the piece and how it tapers from one end to the other. Or else I'd just get a vice jaw and call it a day, slap it on there and done.

because of the age of it, I don't really know if I want to weld to the plate. Because I don't know what type of material it is made out of. It could just shatter on me, then I'm out of luck. If i had a new plate, then I could mess around with this one.
