I drive a used 2018 Ford F-150 Platinum 4x4 with the 3.0 Powerstroke Diesel V6. I always wondered how the diesel drove and I was... not impressed. Especially since it's a huge price premium over the normal gas engines.

After driving this truck for a few years, here is my #1 observation. People that complain about its towing capability really needed to go with a 3/4 ton in the first place. But if you're talking about the 1/2 ton class, its actually very good. No, not rated as good as the Eco Boost, but close, and it makes up for it with the everyday drive torque and the outstanding fuel economy. I'm keeping mine.

I love my 3.0 f150 diesel. When I am at the fuel pump people come up to me all the time asking how I like my half ton diesel, I tell them it isn’t a sports car but it is a great pickup truck! I do everything with it. Run empty, in-town stop and go, highway, and pull a trailer. My all in monthly mpg is 24.5 and I really don’t baby it. For the guys they say it’s slow, go buy a sports car if you want fast, not a 4x4 half ton pick up truck.

I have a 2019 Lariat 3.0 Power Stroke. About 25k miles so far. Great truck. No it is not as peppy as the ecoboost 3.5 but I get 26mpg in mixed local and highway driving and the engine is very comfortable on the highway. This is a very quiet diesel. Too bad they stopped building this truck. Maybe the lightning will fulfill the decent performance with fuel efficiency purpose.

I use my 2018 Platinum F-150 with the 3.0L Powerstroke to tow my 28 ft travel trailer (7,000 lbs) and I love it. The engine delivers max torque from ~1650 rpm which makes a big difference when towing compared to other engines. I’ve towed my camper with a Dodge 2500 HD with the 6.4L Hemi and would choose the 3.0L Powerstroke over the gas naturally aspirated engines, especially on highways and hilly areas. The only drawback to my truck is the relatively low payload. I’ll be looking to move up to a Super Duty with the 6.7L when I buy a new travel trailer for the increased payload.

I purchased a 2.7L 2018 STX supercerew 4x4. The only thing I don't like about the 3.0L diesel engine is that Ford only put it in the upper trim levels. That is a near perfect truck engine. Empty with the cruise control at the speed limit people are reporting from 28 to 30 mpg on the highway. Even in the other brand trucks, diesel half ton trucks just make sense. Who cares how fast a crewcab 4x4 truck is. Fuel mileage towing a max load is the more important metric. While towing a max load if can merge onto the freeway fast enough not to be a menace to truffic, it's fast enough.

I didn't expect so many people to see this video. This was just a spur of the moment quick video of me driving the diesel for the first time. I prefer gas engines, but I can see why someone would like an engine like this. It was smooth and felt quick when you were just cruising around, and it is nice to have that gas mileage. I picked up a a 2018 F-150 PS platinum dealer demo with all the bells and whistles on the used lot in 2019 with 14k miles. IMO the engine is good but lame to drive in eco but great on fuel for city or highway 22 city / 25-28 empty in 2 wheel drive which is great. Sport mode makes this truck fun to drive if that’s what your looking for but if your going to race a truck, you belong in a Raptor. I’ve only towed a 14 ft flatbed and some 14ft boats but the thing doesn’t even feel anything when your towing. It’s great to hear the good reviews on the larger trailers etc. I love the fuel efficiency of the engine overall which is what I was willing to pay for with a some luxury but I think I would go for that hybrid next. That’s a home run IMO; best if both worlds with no plug.

I just bought one of these on Saturday, traded in my mustang and 7.3 for it. The ride quality on mine is excellent, it looks to me like this one had a lift. I've only driven mine a couple hundred miles but so far I'm getting over 24 mpg and climbing. It has enough power for me even in eco mode, but nothing like the 7.3 (I did some work on it) or the coyote in the mustang. In sport mode it will throw you back in the seat a little bit. The F150 has been excellent for me. I did have one front wheel bearing failure that while kind of pricey at $400, was really easy to replace. Are you planning on towing? If so, this is where this engine excels. You don't buy a diesel truck to drive around the city and you shouldn't expect the same get up and go from a diesel vs regular V6. The main difference you will notice is if you are towing with a regular V6 ecoboost, you will need to be at a 2-3 x higher RPM to hit maximum torque, where a diesel will hit that torque at 2000 RPMS. Towing on the highway, a diesel will smoke the ecoboost.

Peppy is not the diesel claim to fame. If you’re looking for fun driving buy a sports car or get the eco boost. Diesels are more for towing, endurance and fuel economy. Can’t really have everything. I owned an eco boost and loved the power but hated the MPG because the minute you use the “boost” the “eco” goes away. A waste in my opinion because you get one or the other even in the eco boost. My 1 ton diesel gets better MPG than my eco boost ever did. I know I’m old fashioned but trucks are for utility, towing and the like, if you want speed buy a mustang.

Only an idiot would buy this truck. So anyway, I bought my 2018 3.0 diesel new and now have 44k on it. (😂) I still love it. For an every day driver without weight on it I give it a perfect 10. Drive, fit and finish, all very nice. It will get every bit of 25 HWY, empty. But being truthful, if I try towing over 5k lbs. it's maybe 11 mpg. And with diesel now at $5/gallon its an expensive truck to drive. It was over $60k new. And there is no way this little engine will last very long if you tow anywhere near its max rating of approx 11k lbs. I'll move to a 3/4 ton in a couple years and keep this little truck. But with a tune for the fun of it. My 2 cents.

@borandell9915
@borandell9915 2 года назад
@@jrizon1976 That is still unknown. I have had no problems at all, and I don't hear about any significant issues with it. But it is basically a new motor and is no longer being offered in the Ford line. Some will try to say it has been around for many years, used in some of the European SUV's. But Ford made some significant modifications to that motor for these trucks. So, I would say it is not yet known. Again, so far so good for me. In theory, if properly maintained, it should have at least a 50,000-mile life expectancy advantage over a similar powered gas motor. I estimate they sold less than 5,000 of them so I think one would be wise to stay away from any used ones that do rarely come on the market as they are still very expensive. Having said that, I doubt I will ever sell mine, as it is the perfect daily driver. Perfect for the occasional tow of less than 11,000 lbs. And oh, that torque, 440 lb ft.!
