I followed the SEX PISTOLS on tour in 1978. See & hear what it was like for a fan!

46 years ago I was a Sex Pistols fan in Los Angeles determined to see the band when they arrived for their tour in January of 1978.
So I flew to Texas to see them! In this video, see what it was like to watch them in small venues in Texas and Oklahoma. Most of the crowd hated them, but the shows were explosive and fantastic.
We shows clips from the 3 shows I went to - San Antonio, Dallas, and Tulsa.
All 3 shows were different in their own way. But they were all great!
I was a Sex Pistols fan then, and I still am. Join me in this one-of-a-kind video with never-before-told stories.

Thanks for this. Most enjoyable. They were the only band who did reject everything. Stunning recollection of an historic moment in time. It's a pity that there hasn't been a movement quite so shambolic, honest and truthful as The Pistols since.

You're incredibly fortunate to have seen them 3 times on this tour. I was only 10 years old, but I remember hearing about it on the news. Most people in America thought they were a bad joke at the time. I would kill to go back in time and see them.

Thanks for relating the story, it was great. In 2014 I was a pizza delivery driver in an Italian restaurant in Brighton. One evening, Paul Cook was sitting there eating. As he went to leave, I briefly chatted with him. He said he's playing a gig across the road in an hour, why don't I come over. I said I can't, I'm working. He gave a sort of derisory laugh. He was right. I'd rather go see the gig than keep working that night, but I couldn't afford to lose the job. I saw the Sex Pistols in Finsbury Park in 1996, and Crystal Palace in 2004.Or 2002.

That time period was an exciting time to be 18. Here in Memphis we were so hurt over Elvis death, that for some of us The Sex Pistols yanked a lot of us out of our shock of the grief we felt from losing Elvis. My girlfriend and I saw them enter the Talisyn ball room on union ave. We were out side the building and when the drums opened up it sounded like Thunder. Big Roar. When John Lydon, Johnny Rotten s. Sister passed by she said hi to me and my girlfriend. I know how juvenile this sounds but it was a moment I've never fogotten. Thank You for this upload. 👍👍. 🎸🎶.

Hi! I really liked the stories and the Steve Jones leather jacket story. Maybe it was because Sid Vicious apperared in the band in 1977 wearing a leather jacket "à la" Dee Dee Ramone or Lou Reed circa 1973, and so maybe Steve Jones felt that he should go for a leather jacket too, not to get behind in the style department (he always had great style!) ? But that that leather jacket came from Los Angeles, and that it was you who brought the jacket to London, to Steve Jones.. I think it's a great piece of information and fantastic story! Thanks a lot! :)

The Sex Pistols are my favorite band and I was born well after their unfortunate demise. Seeing this raw footage, seeing it from another die hard fan perspective, and getting a feel for the times. I'm genuinely and sincerely thankful for this. Pistols rocked so much harder than everything else at the time and without them music that followed would be missing the "three chords and the truth" foundation that they laid. Much respect.
@WhyNotGoPlaces
@WhyNotGoPlaces 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for that comment! They did rock much harder than others. That's why I wanted to mention that they started playing a really hard new song "Belsen" on the tour and how I thought their next album would go in that direction. That album never came of course. Thanks again for watching. I will do another Sex Pistols related video soon.

Thank you for this retro-diary. Your instincts to follow them so 'obsessively' were prescient, considering they ceased to exist mere days later. And in my opinion you caught the CLASSIC Pistols of the US tour, when Sid was more 'into his own' than even August '77. ⚡
@WhyNotGoPlaces
@WhyNotGoPlaces 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching and subscribing! Well, if I hadn't stupidly missed them in August 1977, I would not have been so determined to see them on the U.S. tour. But I really thought at the time that this was just a small tour to get their feet wet in America, so to speak, and that they would come back a few months later and do a full tour - maybe 30+ dates - with another punk band opening up. I think a lot of people probably thought that. I was blind-sided when they broke up a couple of days after Tulsa show. Thanks again for watching.

What an experience, you were very fortunate to have been there at that time. I was just too young (about to turn 12) when they did that tour. They'd just played their last ever UK gigs in my hometown, two benefits for underpriviledged children and striking firemen I think in the evening. The afternoon was an Xmas party which about 100 kids attended. I have friends who were there, although there's many more who'd say they were there than was physically possible lol. I believe John said it was his favourite gig at the time.

Thank god because I had a superb education in popular music and great punk rock bands because of my folks. Thank you for your story. I recognize you as a girl who was wise enough to know how to LIVE in the moment. You also recognize all the chaos at those shows as ...just "rock and roll". Everything from the preachers, to the haters, to the fans, to the band...it's just the rock scene. In my own garage band our rythem guitarist was discovered to be a cross dresser. The rest of the band kinda freaked. I just shrugged my shoulders and said "that's rock and roll". I think you and I would have gotten along famously in those days. Thanks for this. I live in Long Beach Ca as I had in 1978. I was glued to KLOS radio; Los Angeles in 1978 with them sending a DJ to report on this tour. That DJ gave a seething report on the Sex Pistols. This Dj was frothing at the mouth how bad and unprofessional were the Sex Pistols. He hated them with a passion(or was paid to give bad reviews). I just turned 17 at the time. I think I remember thinking the DJ just didn’t understand. I learned decades later the Sex Pistols and punk rock was such a threat to the established music industry they went on the attack bribing radio stations to downplay punk rock or “new wave” and the likes of the Sex Pistols. Ironic that Steve Jones went on to have his Jonseys Jukebox show on KLOS. I became a Pistols fan during the 70s. I too saw them in 1996 here in LA at the Palladium. I think it was in 2007 when I saw them in Las Vegas at the Hard Rock Hotel’s Joint. Both shows were great. After the show in Las Vegas I walked down the street to a punk club called the Double Down Saloon to get more hammered. Walking (staggering) back to the Hard Rock Steve Jones and a couple people were standing outside the Casino about 2-3am. I tried to put a couple words together to give appreciation but couldn’t out of stuttering, shock, awe, shyness and White Russians. Mr Jones being sober was probably just annoyed haha. One of the people he was with just gave me a stern look. I understood the look, me walking away past them me laughing at my own drunkenness/stupidity haha(fool). I rarely drink now, but I wish I would have able to say whatever it was I wanted to say that night. Again thanks for this video. Cheers

Cool video and insights into how the pistols were. Back in 1977 i found out they were playing as the spots at cromer linx pavilion on xmas eve....it was about 25 miles from where i lived in a village with no bus stop in norfolk uk . As it happened to be my birthday, i tried to get my parents to give me a lift....their response : no, you can't go, we've got relatives coming for xmas and it's too far ....they were pretty open minded and weren't bothered it was the sex pistols or that i was turning 14 but were more concerned about how i'd get back 25 miles on xmas eve because i guess they didn't want to drive back out there to collect me ....completely reasonable logic of course....but not to me at the time 😅

What a great story. It's difficult to see shows when you are that young. Even at 19, my parents were supporting me so it was hard for me to go against their wishes. As many others have said your recollections are fascinating. Meeting Malcolm and the band and finding yourself with decent people is so refreshing rather than the narrative that they were horrible- Sid was thick and couldn’t play etc. I always thought the US tour looked incredible and sounded great. I’m from the UK but for me the US tour was one of the great tours of any band and I agree with you that Malcolm’s idea was quite clever- the ‘attack’ of the band is so powerful. Just great to hear ur story. Hope Noel Gallagher has seen this!

What I love about your posts is the way you speak simply as a fan of The Sex Pistols, them as a group. You just seem to love the music and the experience. I must have read numerous books and seen numerous documentaries about the Pistols over the years, but your take is engaging and personal. The Pistols as sociological phenomenon. The Pistols in relation to 1970s Britain. Anti-Stardom and the Pistols. I've read/seen them all (I love The Sex Pistols btw!) But your take is 'I was a fan', 'We followed them. They changed our lives.' I appreciate that. It's different, refreshing and honest. ❤

Thanks you so much! Your comments made my day. Seeing them live meant everything to me in 1978, especially since I missed them in 1977. I like to tell my stories as a fan, nothing more. I guess it's "personal journalism" in a way. I'm actually thinking of changing the name of my channel to something with the word "fan" in it, since that's the turn my channel has taken since I posted the SP on Tour video 2 months ago. Thanks again for your kind words. I really appreciate it.

I love this video. I am a musician, born in San Diego and moved to Tulsa in the early 80's. I have always thought it was cool that out of seven U.S shows, Cains Ballroom was number six on that tour. Did you know that Sid punched a hole in the dressing room wall? It was covered up for many years, but has since been removed and framed in the Cains office. I have played Cains Ballroom many times now and am honored to have played on the stage where the Pistols played. Out of the seven venues that they played, Cains is the only one still active. Thank you for sharing your story.

I'm glad Cains is still around. It was a good venue in my opinion. Not too small, but not too big. It was my favorite concert on the tour. Yes, someone wrote to me that he punched a wall there. That's so cool they keep in framed in the office. I'll never forget seeing him run off with a transvestite after the show. Sid was wild. Thanks for watching. Subscribe if you want more.

I unfortunately, have never seen the Pistols live... BUT over the years, I did get to see the Ramones 12 times, The Damned twice and The Clash once (opening for the Who) who were also IMHO, the originators of the movement. It's funny that as you acquire age, experience & maturity how you look back on adolescence angst, both yours's and others. The Pistols expressed and reflected a confusing and (seemingly) hopeless time we were going through... Only to look back at it as 'the good ol' days' ... again, it's funny, at least to me at age 58...

I’ve never heard an American express such warmth towards the Pistols. Many of us appreciate and love the band for their spectacular, timeless album and what they accomplished, but a sense of warmth? The way some feel about the Faces or the Clash? I don’t know. It’s refreshing to hear such a pure response to the Pistols.

Thank you! I appreciate that compliment. I do remember that when punk got big in America, many people - including other big name musicians like John Lennon or Bruce Springsteen- would say they liked The Clash but not many would mention the Sex Pistols. Not that the Clash weren't great, but I always thought that was strange. As you know, Joe Strummer started the Clash after he was in a band that opened for the Sex Pistols. Anyway, thanks for watching! Subscribe for more.

I was born 3 years later. My friends cool hippy teacher mom dated one of the guys from the Shitdogs who opened at the Baton Rouge show. I try to show her off if we're in public to impress rockers cuz her attendence is a cool fact. Shitdogs are a great band! I’m from New Orleans and was 11 when the Pistols played Baton Rouge but I was aware of what was happening. I was just getting into punk, coming from (and still am) being a fan of Alice Cooper, Kiss, Aerosmith etc. and being an avid reader of Creem, Hit Parader and Rock Scene. I was lucky to see a few local bands later on in ‘78 like the Normals, Contenders, Moths, Dukes. The Baton Rouge Sex Pistols gig exists on audio and I’ve seen photos from that night also.

This would be on the same level as seeing the Beatles on their first American tour. In those days I was a hardcore prog rock fan but I was aware and receptive of the Sex pistols. I’m from Montreal so I never got to see the Pistols. I would have though if they had showed up. I didn’t understand it at the time but I knew something was up. $3.50 was about half price to see a concert of a fairly popular band in '78. I saw AC/DC w. UFO in Nov. '77, for about the same price, it being a special half-price Thanksgiving show (AC/DC was just gaining popularity at that point, but was years away from being played on the radio). I saw Alice Cooper in summer of '78 (with AC/DC opening!) and it was $8 for a ticket. In 1977, I wouldn't have paid a penny to see The Pistols, but in the few short 46 years since that time, I came to realize that genre labels are b.s.....ROCK N ROLL is the only label needed for an original, groundbreaking band!

As I explained in my Sid Vicious video, I moved to London in the summer of 1978 and stayed for 2 years. The music happening at that time was MUCH more advanced than what was happening in LA at the time. Joy Division and PIL blew me away, for example. I loved those two years.
