My biggest problems with chosen one archtypes is that all solutions must revolve around them. Why was Naruto their for Asuma's revenge why did Law take a backseat to Luffy in his fight with Doffy. To me it does a disservice to the plot
I mean I agree with this take to a degree. If this was a take regarding Naruto in particular I think there wouldn't be any issue, and AoT also suffers from this, however when you started throwing in the other anime it progressively got worse. DBZ does feature a chosen one archetype but it is done more for hype than destiny or plot, there was the legend of the Super Saiyajin and Frieza feared the legendary Super Saiyajin, leading to the story's events. it doesn't feel like destiny or fate in this instance, rather its a self fulfilling prophecy that mostly serves to hype up the transformation. as for BNHA and JJK that is quite a bit of a stretch to say Deku fits the chosen one archetype because All Might chose him as his pupil, or that Yuji was a chosen one because he ate a finger and gained power from it. One piece you could argue it is a chosen one archetype but, like dragon ball, it doesn't take away from it in any way, it's more like an epic in this instance.
My main point was that the trope is overused in shounen anime and is sort of the default option when creating a main character. Different shows use this trope to different degrees but in BNHA and JJK the main characters still got their power from somewhere that wasn’t their own efforts. It also happens in both shows that they received the “strongest” power possible for them to receive, which makes it seem to be destiny or fate at work. I also don’t think this trope always makes a bad main character, but when you see the same thing in every shounen it gets repetitive. I didn’t mention it in the video but demon slayer is another blatant example of this, and I’m sure almost every shounen you can think of uses this trope.
@@jumpreport The main point you just provided is what @karma8430 is talking about in his comment. U completely missed his main point (which was talking abt dbz and op hardly being chosen ones) while explaining your own point that was clearly stated in your video. I expected your comment to address his lol.
Might I add to the Naruto, Neji things is that Neji worked harder than Naruto. Naruto was known mostly as a slacker until he almost failed. Neji was always hard working
That was only really at the beginning. The rest of the show Naruto was a hard worker. You are literally taking one time that he was considered a slacker and measuring him up to that literally only the beginning labeled him a slacker.
The reasons I disagree: 1.) You need a protagonist driving the story forward. The protagonist is inevitably going to be your chosen one. You've chosen the world to revolve around them, and to progress through them & their choices. 2.) A chosen one doesn't particularly lock somebody into fate unless there's some SUPER specific prophecy about what they're supposed to do. Naruto's fate was supposed to be the same as most of the other Jinchuriki's, ostracized by the people, through his willpower he gained acceptance. Naruto & Sasuke were not the first reincarnations, and if they were bound simply to fate, the cycle would have just repeated itself. They had to break the cycle. 3.) Just because you're the chosen one, that doesn't mean your story has to be plain & predictable. In the Avengers movie series, Ironman is the chosen one. He sees Thanos's fleets, has visions of Thanos, creates Ultron, has beef with Bucky, encounters Thanos lackies first, invents time travel, and snaps the glove to save the universe. He's the driving force behind all the events in every Avengers movie & he ends up dying in the end. Unexpected. 4.) The problem with all these stories is that the supporting cast is often very lacking, and it causes the "Chosen One" to stand out just a little too much. It doesn't feel like they're actually struggling against the world to overcome it, but rather being helped by the world. Everyone else in Konoha is training hard, but Sasuke & Naruto are just consistently gapping them by MILES from what seems to be free power boosts. 5.) As I mentioned with avengers, if you balance out the supporting cast, and make them struggle against the world, then the chosen on trope won't be so glaring. You don't realize the Avengers movies are really Ironman movies until you look back in retrospect. That's because everyone around him was important as well, and he never gapped them in power/story relevance.
I agree with most of your points but I still think it’s possible to have a main character that isn’t a chosen one. The main things I look for is whether the character gained their power through their own efforts or if it was handed to them via astronomical luck (aka fate or destiny). That’s really where I have a problem with the trope as a lot of plot points get solved by the protagonist pulling out their cheat/plot armor and leads to lazy writing. There’s plenty of chosen one characters that are extremely well written and don’t default to plot armor when facing a problem in the narrative. If the chosen one character overcomes challenges through their own effort then I don’t have many problems with the trope on its own. I do think it’s a giant pitfall waiting to happen when writers choose to go this route and it leads to stories with much less impact because of it.
@@jumpreport That I can't definitely agree with. Plot armor is the killer of stories, especially when it relies on a plot armor power. Particularly when that power is too easily tame. I don't mind my characters starting out with a power that clearly OP. I only mind it, when it feels like they don't have any real struggles in using it. No repercussions/they get used to it too easy.
In my opinion any trope can be good if it’s done right like Star Wars or done horribly like Mha or it’s not supposed to be done right because it’s the theme of the show like one piece
Sounds like you pretty much made it the trope of each one. I agree with a couple of those being same but not all of them were I respect your take on it.
deku was given his powers because of his heroic actions, yuji had no choice to eat the finger because he would have died and goku's best friend was killed thus angering him
love the fact that vegeta is mentioned in this video as a fake chosen one and that goku was pointed out to be the real chosen one. vegeta needs his flowers my guy. also its true naruto is ninja jesus but he's written well until the end of the series.
They dont like the truth :) and i think goku earned the super saiyan transformation but super saiyan god and all of super is the chosen one bs as vegeta keeps trying to catch up to goku while in dbz other characters got some time to shine like gohan
@@jumpreport Fate and desteny in OP isnt about having special inner power. It is about a man who was able to find ad make use of this power. Luffy had harder life than most avarage people, he never had 9tails to back him up. He winning because he can. Fate is still unresolved topic in one piece. To say that somebody is destend, is on thing. To be the only option is anouther. Luffys fruit isnt special if you cant make it special. My eng is bad sorry for that. I just think your vid lacks depth
