Charlotte didn't make any of her girls marry someone they didn't know at 17. They have been allowed to remain single until they are no longer childbearing age. It has been 56 years since Charlotte got married. Of course she isn't a naive 17 year-old anymore. She had 15 children in 20 years and has now lost 3 of them. She is frustrated with these kids because they weren't forced to worry about duty for decades. Everyone lays everything at Charlotte's feet even though she had to do everything, plus be the mother of the nation. And that is what women can actually expect if you are successful in your career - to have people wanting to see you break down and cry before they see your humanity.
@MarG1809
@MarG1809 Год назад
Exactly. I think George and Charlotte didn’t want to treat their kids like they had been treated and look what happened. The boys were irresponsible brats. You see that in real life way too often. If you are too strict they will complain and if you are too soft they will also complain but will become irresponsible. The boys are grown men above 40 most likely and they still act like children. Plus she had 15 of course you cannot give them all the attention they need and with a husband that needs you and a country to rule? She just had too much on her plate.
@nikkimay7

Good points. She lost only 2 children though, not 3. The dead girl in Ep 1 was her grand daughter, her first born Georgie’s child (who was also pregnant with her great grand child). 😊

The part that is sickening is that the doctor said, “I don’t treat with leeches and xyz” and that is exactly what he did. He is a classic abuser. He used every form of abuse. He isolated George from everyone, broke him down, verbally, emotionally, and physically. He wanted to have that dominance. That “i am in control of the king.” I can control England by controlling the king. I love how special the dog is after seeing what George went through to give it to her. Like Lady Danbury said, the dog is like a diamond. I like sentimentality of that.

Fun fact!! In real life George and Charlotte had a very hands on and close relationship with their children (which was very rare) and spent a lot of time with them. George especially loved his daughters so much and didn’t want them to marry and move away and as he got older and his sickness/mental illness got worse the topic of marrying them off made him very upset. Their daughters all lived very close to them and Charlotte relied on them as close companions and support. None of their daughters had any children and only of few of them married at an old age. It seems like Charlotte had a very lovely relationship with her daughters so it’s sad that in this, they don’t really have that. I would love to see move of her children and their relationship in future Bridgerton seasons!! To see how she relies and finds comfort in them as she did in real life.

Obviously both characters are suffering tremendously, but I always feel more for Charlotte. Regardless of age, what she goes through (being sold off, displaced, objectified, alienated, lied to, and confronted with her husband's condition), it'd be overwhelming for anyone. She just can't seem to catch a break. It is clear from the "present day" scenes that Charlotte is not the best of mothers, but I find it hard to blame her. She had to take on many roles (wife, leader of the nation, caregiver, mother), one of them had to take the backseat.

I love that you mentioned the extra steps they took to make Lord Danbury undesirable and the problems with that. I don’t even mind the extra wrinkles or lost teeth they gave him - if they wanted him to be “ugly” then fine. My issue was that they made the actor even darker, as if somehow being dark skin adds to his unattractiveness. There’s a whole lot to unpack there.

Yes it would’ve been enough to say he is old and wrinkly and doesn’t view Agatha as a person but the steps they took to make him a bumbling fool with a bright red mouth and darkening his skin with makeup and even his hair just has rubbed me the wrong way from the jump.

They were not "disgusting" back them. Their undergarments were made of linen, which absorbs sweat and body smells and were often changed 2 or more times a day, as we clearly see in this video. While they may not have bathed in a bathtub every day, they did wash every day using a basin, a jug of water and a sponge or piece of cloth and would often wipe down their bodies with clean linen between changes of clothing and undergarments to absorb sweat before it could start to smell. Remembering too that Europe was going through an Little Ice Age at this time for about 500 years so temperatures were cooler, they also were wearing natural fabrics and ate less meat. Eating less meat has been shown by researchers to improve body odor. Soap wasn't common and used for laundry instead, thus the washing of undergarments when bodies couldn't be washed. Oh Toothpowder was in common use during this time to keep teeth clean with some powder and a scrap of cloth to rub the teeth clean with and hair was kept clean using pomades and powders to trap the dirts and oils and be brushed away.

it breaks my heart for George to hear Charlotte arguing with his mom and implying he is deficient, it definetely confirms George's fears and mirrors nasty real life attitudes, but it hurts the most knowing Charlotte as well as we know her. It makes me think of the first episode when she is being fitted for the wedding dress and she's asking about George and why no one will tell her anything about him: she asks whether he is ugly or dull, saying "she can work with that" (then asks if he is cruel and that's the only one she doesn't try to say she'd be fine with). I think Charlotte wouldn't have thought twice about being there for George from the start if she'd been given the chance, with the same ease and willingness that she had when she brought him back inside from the garden. What she is most angry about when yelling at George's mom is not the episode she just witnessed, it's the fact that same as the start of the show no one is telling her anything, and i feel for her. When she throws it in the mom's face that she married a man she wasn't allowed to know, she's right. They felt she needed to be trapped into the marriage, that only a brown royal from a small country would ever accept to be married to someone like George, when in reality all she needed was to be told the truth. Be allowed to know the truth, so that she knew where she stood and why George avoided her instead of thinking there was something in her that he didn't want, instead of thinking she had left her home to marry a man who did not want to be married to her. George overhears the argument and his fears are confirmed, how wouldn't they be? But what makes it worse is knowing that without his mom and the palace treating his illness the way they do, it would've been okay

What you said about Reynolds in that scene with Charlotte and George really made me think about him and his role. I can only imagine how hard it was before Charlotte, when it was just him. There's such loneliness in the fact that he can't share what's going on with anyone, plus he's one of the only people to know, and anyone else who knows is of such higher status that he can't even talk to them about it. He's really out there trying to do the best for George with no one to even consult or share this with. Idk, his loyalty and care for George are an additional sad layer to this whole story, he's really out there trying his best.

When I saw the first scene between Lady Danbury and her husband I was like, "I bet that's how he dies", my jaw dropped when I realized I'd called it. While it is unclear what George III suffered from, he might have had porphyria, which among other things can cause psychosis.
@AnxietyRat
@AnxietyRat Год назад
Yeah, regarding his diagnosis for a very long time people were kind of see-sawing between bipolar 1 and porphyria. In 2013 a bunch of the journals George kept were released to the public... And it seems like a LOT of historians are much more strongly leaning towards bipolar 1 now than porphyria due to the symptoms detailed in the documents that were released. Because yes, porphyria can cause symptoms of psychosis if left untreated... it also has a bunch of other symptoms that I guess weren't present within those documents. And so bipolar 1 which ALSO can cause psychotic symptoms during manic episodes is the more likely diagnosis from what the professionals are saying anyway. And the actor himself specifically mentioned a book that he used to prepare for the role. And it was a book that did go over those 2013 documents that were released... And so while the actor didn't specifically say which diagnosis he had in mind... he DID have a specific diagnosis he was attempting to portray to make sure that his portrayal was as respectful and accurate is it could be...and so it was likely that he was portraying bipolar 1 symptoms in the show. But the dementia is also correct, technically. Because people assume that he did have dementia later in life as well. So yeah I think it's accurate to say that he does have dementia in current-day Bridgerton but as the spin-off shows he does have other mental health issues earlier on in his life.

I can’t remember the last time I wanted to fight a fictional character as much as I want to fight Dr. Monroe. That said Episode 4 was actually my second favorite episode even though it was definitely upsetting. I loved seeing things from George’s pov and how it changes everything about how we view the previous episodes. The scene with Charlotte and the dowager princess was so complicated. I don’t think that Charlotte is wrong to be upset since this huge secret was actively hidden from her and George’s mom doubling down escalated the situation. Charlotte just saw her husband in full psychosis and realizes there are multiple safety measures in place including making sure he can’t access sharp objects (did he try to hurt himself? Someone else?) which is a lot to take in at once. She was very kind and comforting to George during his episode and didn’t realize George could hear her when she was expressing her frustration. She loves George, but like many people (even well meaning ones) she doesn’t really have a framework to talk about mental illness and says the wrong thing. It hurts to hear but it’s realistic especially for the time period.

I have to say, as someone with heavy mental health issues myself (though decidedly better thanks to therapy), I wish they had included a content warning for this episode. I didn't even realised how triggering it was until I already was in a very, very bad state. I like that they tackle the issue and show the abusive, criminal acts that doctors back then commited against patients, but I would have preferred to be warned before and be able to protect myself. Still, I think just from the depth of emotion and feeling, I love this season the most out of the Bridgerton universe!

Well done on your degree! Re: mental illness in the Georgian/Regency era, I’ve done a bit of reading for a project and a common belief at the time was that “madness” was a direct result of deep moral failings and indulgence in vice (usually sexual). So for broader society to hear that their monarch was mad would make them question his morality and character (which is not good if you’re trying to be the head of the Church of England as well as allegedly chosen by God to rule over the nation,) but then George himself would be well-aware of this belief in his context, and be fully prepared to blame some grave sinful error in himself that had brought his illness upon him, not only as a blight and a danger to himself, but to his country, too. :( For Charlotte, or anyone, to chose not to blame George’s own actions for his mental illness, is a radical act and entirely at odds with 18th century “science”. (And sadly still somewhat radical, today.)

Yeah between scandal, htgawm and now this, Idk if shonda wants to write a healthy black couple. Because its clear she can write romance and write it well, and because of the nature of this show I’ve accepted than any interracial couple of main characters will involve a white person bc the bridgertons are white, but girl not even a side couple? All we got is that one couple from season 1 and they were working class, which isn’t bad but you mean to tell me we aint have ONE functional black or even interracial w/another POC couple in all of the gentry? The thing that has always irked me about bridgerton is that I feel like they went in wanting to do something “different” in regards to racial casting but they didn’t wanna commit to what that would really mean for the story. I honestly believe they could have just not addressed it and truly just had a race-blind casting. But since they chose to address it, they need to do better because charlottes marriage is not enough to fully erase racism, like no

I specify, my comment may seem dry and passive aggressive, in reality it is in no way representative of my mood. I hope there is no misunderstanding on this because despite everything I understand your point of view. It is true that the day before Queen Charlotte gives me the vibes of Princess Augusta, but at the same time it is still a little different. ^^ I'm kind of on Queen Charlotte's side because I think she's somehow right. I agree that from our point of view, which is very out of step at the time, it is very similar with the passage of his brother. But it is the future of the monarchy that is at stake, its children will not be eternal, they will not be able to succeed each other indefinitely, they must bring an heir. Especially since the difference is that she left time for her children to enjoy their youth, and she leaves them the choice of whom to marry (admittedly a noblewoman, because after a while you shouldn't mess around, but she leaves the choice to them, just bring a fucking heir). And also, she leaves her daughters alone when it comes to marriage, yes in a sour and harsh way but she leaves them. I'm not saying that the situation is simple, despite my speech I understand your feeling regarding this segment. But despite everything I also understand Charlotte, the fact that her children look young does not prevent them from dying in the near future. For example the last child of George and Charlotte, Princess Amélie, died a few years earlier in the series (incidentally mentioned in season 1 of Bridgerton when Charlotte speaks to old King George) she was 27, that's young is not it ? Well at that time it was a reality. Anyway, I hope I'm not too much for a finicky 😅

A while ago I watched a video about Queen Charlotte's Life on RU-vid (History Tea Time with Lindsay Holiday), and she really seemed to have changed with the King's illness. I'm from Germany, but I admit that I didn't know much about her.

Hi Daria, I really like your Bridgerton-verse reactions. With this series, so far, I wish we could see more. There are many scenes I wish we could have seen your reactions to…I don’t know if it is because of the double episode videos?? or?? I think you do the best Bridgerton reactions… just wish we could see more of the reaction scenes in the last few episodes.

@@FullofLit Hello! I don't mean to sound annoying, but do you think - would it be possible to upload the full reaction to this on google like for the first 2 eps? It's just I enjoyed it *so* much and I love these episodes and this show a lot and would love to see the full version too 🥺

She is 17 at this point and the queen of England. Having an understanding of what was wrong would not even play into her thinking. Emotions are all she has. And she hasn't been married that long. They are both missing context of the situation.

17-year-old doe-eyed Charlotte who gets lessons in how to play the role of the queen in the early years of her marriage vs married for decades and is (practically) a ruler with 15 kids birthed and 13 alive feels different because SHE is. She probably tried giving her kids the chance to do what she slightly did for herself (find love) but the girls never did and the boys produced bastards, she's scrambling because who knows how long she or 'the mad king' have to provide an heir's heir. We're just seeing it more as she's our focus. She froze in time, Brimsley with her and her daughters save the oldest did as well...she doesn't see that she's stuck in time and so are those who love her ALSO, CONGRATULATIONS ON GRADUATING!

I don’t think Charlotte has an issue with George’s problem, but she does have an issue with not being told that he does have a problem, and making her think that she was the one with the problem when George is the one who had the problem, and that is not his fault but his issue has to be acknowledged and dealt with, at least as his wife she absolutely should have known from the start.

That actor who plays the Doctor, plays Mr Collins in 'Lost in Austen.' Don't watch that quirky twisting of the Pride & Prejudice tale if you're a stringent purest, who can't see it for the piece of silly fun it is.

Congratulations on your degree! Wahoo🎉 So glad you are back to review Queen Charlotte. We all thought the Dr was going to be great, but his true nature was revealed. I hate that instead of George and Charlotte talking, they overhear conversations and don't address it. Instead they pull away from each other. But it makes for great drama. #Bridgerton
