@@TheBuffNerd7539 I'm in the process of switching careers into the IT field. I don't have an end goal yet but I enjoy helping people and fixing things. I hear for newbies a help desk role is the best way to get a foot in the door. If so what would be some of the things I would need to know (generally) to land that job ?

This is exactly my situation brother! I am a network specialist & engineer for the DHA (contractor) . It’s a contract with the Airforce. It requires a secret security clearance. Anyway, my job description is the same as you. Job is pretty much a 2.1 tier job. Very precise commands and duties. Then goes by and I would barely get calls or tickets. I am in the process of getting my CCNP encore as well. But now I’m about to get my server and switch for labs. Thank you brother! So much inspiration.

Tier 1 typically relates to easier tasks that need to be completed within a NOC.

I am confused -- do you prefer to be more on site? I don’t now of any Engineer’s in any tech field these days that comes with a ton of on site time. Everything is in the cloud, virtualization, etc. I personally don’t want anything to do with hardware. From my understanding most On site roles are reserved to technicians, not so much engineers.

I had a recruiter tell me once how little ‘Titles” actually mean in the IT field, and from my experience is soooo true. Titles typically have no actual relation to salary, or technical understanding.
@TheBuffNerd7539

On the government side, there are networks and sensitive compartmented information facilities that can’t be accessed remotely. Some engineers have to be on site. I would rather be remote primarily but having a top secret clearance prevents that sometimes.
