I went to Walmart and bought every brand of frozen hamburger they had. I took those home and cooked each one and rank which is the best and the worst. I also share some general tips on how to cook a frozen hamburgers. I will answer the questions: How to season a frozen hamburger, how to cook one in an air fryer, how to cook one in a cast iron skillet, and how to cook a frozen hamburger on a pellet grill. After watching this video you should know everything you need to know when buying and cooking frozen hamburgers. I always laugh at the frozen hamburger debate. My family owned a bowling alley, from 1961 until 2021 (the land that it sits on, the business was shuttered and the building means almost nothing was sold this past December). We had people that would drive for over an hour to get our burger. Not to bowl, nothing else but get a burger from us. I think our advantage (along with a quality frozen patty) was the original flat top from the 60s that had been seasoned for decades. The pure thickness of it, you will never see that today.

Best way I've found to cook frozen burger patties is in a pan on medium heat with the lid on. The lid helps steam the burger and also keep grease from spraying all over the place. I cook one side for a few seconds just so it's not frozen and seasoning will stick, season both sides that way with Morton Season-All. Cook one side, flip, put cheese on that cooked side, put the top bun on top of the cheese, put the lid on and let the second side cook to completion. Sometimes I put a small splash of water in the pan in the last minute to help melt the cheese with steam, works really well. Using the lid and putting the cheese on as soon as you flip and letting it melt that whole time helps the cheese melt together with the bun and stick. I put some sauce on the bottom bun (mayo, ketchup, mustard, relish, fine onion powder) and when the burger is done I just the burger onto the bottom bun and it's done. EDIT: I also toast the buns in the pan beforehand with butter and garlic powder.

The cheap ones, even the Flanders can be doctored up to be pretty decent, even good. For the price of the more expensive ones, unless you want the semi convenience, better to just make your own. I say semi, is it takes about as long to grab a burger press (about 10 bucks for a cheap one) and press out some burgers if you don't want to hand make them as it does to pry apart the frozen ones. If they are not stuck together, then other than a few minutes making them, the fresh are cheaper.

@@ButcherWizard I think that the amount of fat content between the three Great Value burgers requires different grilling methods. The 85/15 is probably for those cooking methods that use a lot of butter or basting sauces during the grilling on a blackstone griddle. The 80/20 is at the good general purpose range for griddle or grill (wire mess) surface and can tolerate some basting while developing a light crust. The 75/25 seems like it has enough fat content to remain on a grill for longer in order to develop a thicker crust.

Also, me and my mom have tried just about every frozen beef patty there is, and the best we have found are the Great Value brand. That is literally two people that have the same opinion that most beef patties are horrible, and the only ones we can tolerate are the Great Value brand. I remember years ago we got a box because they were cheap, and they were horrible. So we kinda had a mission to find good beef patties. So we found a Save A Lot brand that were decent, but then we found some box hamburgers that came on a bun, but we would just use the meat, and those were by far the best beef patties we ever tried. Sadly they quit selling those at the local Walmart. So we were back on the hunt, and we picked up a bag of the Great Value brand, and they were good enough to keep buying. My mom actually still talks about how amazing it is that we bought so many boxes and bags of beef patties and all of them were trash. It is hard to find decent beef patties. I cannot explain it, but most of them have this weird taste, and it is the same weird taste in almost all of them. It is like they all use the same weird tasting additive, and with the first bite you can taste it. Very few lack that weird taste.

We rarely do frozen burgers but when we do I use the air fryer. Generally because I am in a hurry or trying to accomplish several things at once and can't stand over the grill or stove. My method is simple but results in a tastier burger in the air fryer. I take the frozen patties and douse them in Worcestershire sauce. Just a thin layer to make the patty damp. I then season both sides with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. It sticks because of the moisture. I then cook them in the air fryer. You don't taste the Worcestershire but you definitely get the salt/pepper/garlic. I also season after the flip but omit the salt. Done side by side the pre seasoned burgers are definitely tastier and seem to also be juicier.

The Bubba Burger black angus variety is the best frozen burger I’ve had. They also have (had?) a grass-fed variety that only had four patties in the box. Very pricey, so I’ve never tried those. That said, I always have a bag of the 80/20 Great Value patties in the freezer. With Gourmet Burger seasoning and cooked from frozen on low heat, they come out juicy enough and tasty enough.

This is my first view of your channel- former butcher and chef here. I dont mean to be "that guy", but you can absolutely salt a patty while frozen and it wont "all fall off"- as long as: the patty is already searing on the other side. You really should be seasoning both sides of your burger- so putting the burger on the flat top frozen, then salting the top- is ideal. Then once you flip- season the other side of the patty. This will ensure you are evenly seasoned on all sides and get a more complete flavor.

As someone who works there (in the meat dept), I have to unbiasedly say don’t skip on any of them. Taste buds are all different. I personally think the great value 12ct burgers all taste the same, and as far as the sams choice burgers go, the vadalia onion is the better option. Especially compared to the bacon burger that feels rock hard regardless of cooking method, maybe it’s the extra fat in it, I don’t know. But my top 3 would be (in no order) bubba burger, sams vadalia onion, and plain black angus if you like seasoning them your own way.

I disagree about separating them, if you take the whole bag and drop it on the floor (provided it is hard and not vinyl tile) they will separate, just a couple times and the whole bag will be good to go, also works on ice.

I've done that for years - frozen burgers for busy days. I buy frozen burgers at the Chef's Store. I figured if that's where the restaurants buy their stuff then it's probably good. So far the boxes I get there are great. I tried the grocery store ones and they didn't taste "right." I don't shop at Walmart - they are just a joke for so many reasons (and rude.) I also tried some frozen burgers from a butcher and that was probably the worst tasting burger ever - it had almost no fat and had no flavor. I asked them about it and they said no one puts fat in their food anymore so I won't find it anywhere (yes they are that delusional.) That same butcher also told me no one processes suet for sale anymore (I needed it for mincemeat - and finally found it at a grocery store.) I wonder what else I can go ask that butcher for (lol)?

I clicked on one frozen hamburger video and now my recommended feed is inundated with these. If you've ever bought beef of any kind... it's different... every time... Cows from the same herd, with the same parents, can taste different. So to expect frozen hamburger of even the same brand to taste the same every time is pretty silly.

I used to work at a food bank and we would get tons of those Sam's ones and I always got to take some home when I 'shopped' at the end. I love both kinds for the reasons you gave (good melted cheese and bacon grease making that one juicier, and the caremelized onions on the other), never had those Bubba burgers because people would always take them first. Former cook here, just want to chime in on your frozen burger separation technique! While you can use a butter knife, there is a better way! Take the open face of the burger patty, and slam it onto your cutting board/counter/flat surface. It doesn't have to be extremely hard, just give it a good whack. They will separate after the first or second try, trust me.
