I should have done this BEFORE I started growing my hair 😫

You’re 100% right. A change in how we look and feel about our hair will ultimately cause us to treat it differently. We should also remember to give ourselves a little grace. Most of us have literally just started to learn how to care for our natural hair while being adults! That’s really crazy when you think about it. It’s like learning how to wash yourself for the first time as an adult. So the best we can do is to continue to encourage one another, and share our hair practices and journeys with one another. RU-vid has been the only place I’ve gained any real knowledge in caring for my hair. That’s amazing when I think about it. Thanks for this video! 🌺❤️💕

Firstly, I love that you're often one of the first to watch and comment 🎉🎖️ That's a really good point, we had to learn all of these things and similar to you. If it wasn't for RU-vid I wouldn't have known it was even possible to grow long hair. That's also partly why I started this channel. I want to document my growth but also show others that they can do it too.

Honestly 😅 having to learn ANYTHING at adulthood is a bit more daunting than if it was taught earlier so having to learn our hair at this stage isn't easy. But it's possible. And we can do it ❤💙

@Natural2020 Awe thanks! 💙💕 My children have me up way before I’d like to be, so it’s easy for me to get the morning started and listen to my favorite channels about hair! 😅 And yes! I am especially grateful for ladies like you who share your hair journeys and experiences. It’s helping more than you’ll know. Thanks for putting yourself out here…it’s so appreciated! 🌸

I'm from a different generation. I was a little girl in the 1970s so I saw big afros as a child and my hair was kept in braids and plaits. People did complain when they had to do my hair and deal with the kinks, knots etc, but I never took it personally. Then in the 80s I got a perm and started doing my hair. The worst 10 years of my entire hair life. In the 90s, I ditched the relaxers and went natural. I'm not sure if I loved my natural hair at that point. It was moreso trying to get away from relaxers and remembering happier hair days before the relaxed hair days. I'd say the mindset change that I had to make is to accept how much time it takes to take care of long natural hair and learning to embrace that time instead of dreading it. That is the mental hurdle that I had to leap. When I was newly natural in the 1990s, I had also just graduated from college and was working as a new grad. I used to have nightmares that I washed my hair and fell asleep without twisting it up and had to deal with it in the morning before work. That *never* happened of course😊'

Your journey through the different decades is so interesting. Yesss!!! That is such an important mindset change that is required - getting used to the time it takes. Oh my, falling asleep with freshly washed but not styled hair would definitely be a nightmare 😂 I really appreciate your thorough comment.

Hey sis ❤ as for me, I'm currently on my natural hair journey and I'm teaching myself how to love her and take care of her. But mehn it's not been easy 😂😢 Especially when I see other girls with long hair 😢 I do feel bad that my hair isn't long or straight, you know. As I'm trying to grow out my hair longer, braids and twists are what I'm still perfecting and honestly 😅 there are days I find it hard to step out of the house without feeling unattractive nor presentable. It's being an up and down journey 😅 but I'm still pushing. So yes, I'm working on my mindset towards my hair.

I love the realness of this response and I really resonate with it. I definitely recall feeling unpresentable or unkempt, yet it's actually quite sad that slick, straight and tight hairstyles are what we've deemed as presentable. I'm glad you're still pushing through because your flyaways and protective styles are acceptable.

@@Natural2020_ I'm really glad you responded. I feel like I'm not alone. Though no one around me is on the same page but at least I thank God that I have an online community that I could at least resonate with. I really wish I had more women around that could help but anyway, I'll just have to be my own steering wheel. Thank you so much for this response. I really appreciate you sis ❤
