Ditto, on what Matej said...about everything. It's refreshing to hear something other than soft-core techno/rave music. Absolutely stunning image! I can't wait for a break in the weather, so that I can get out and do some shooting.

John, thanks for sharing your insight and hands on setup for shooting milkyway pano's with a tracker. This has been my goal for this spring, but I've always been uncertain about how many stacked images to take during the pan given the rotation of the milkyway. Sadly hear in Canada the core sits to the south, so at best you can usually get in about an hour for the core.

That’s a phenomenal outcome, John. Wow. Absolutely love it. 🤩👏 I’d hoped to land a tracked stacked arch pano last weekend up on the East coast of the UK, but strong winds, snow showers (!) and cloud meant I had to stick with untracked to stand a chance of getting all the shots I needed. Can’t wait to implement your tutorial!

Glad to see another of your videos I'm out tonight but was in such a rush I forgot the one most important bit of Kit! Yes I forgot my tracker! Anyway I have question inregards to your computer what sort of specs does your pc have to edit such large panoramas it must be very taxing on your computer? I'm quessing a good graphic card is in order?
@johnrutterphotography
@johnrutterphotography 2 года назад
Oh no!!! Haha I had a custom computer built to handle what I wanted to do, I'm not sure on the specs but the graphics card wasn't the most important thing, it was a really good processor

Holy s@#t that is insane! So many questions, but I guess I'll just start with 2; 1. How to you deal with fatigue during the night? You are manually operating your gear, how do you keep your wits about you so you don't slip up and trash a nights effort? 2. How do you find the Samyang 35 f/1.4? I have the Samyang 35mm f/1.8 tiny prime which I love, but has a few CA / aberration issues for AP (even stopped down). I was thinking I might get the Sony 35mm GM, but that has me wondering what I'm going to eat as I'd have no money for food. Do you have many issues with your Samyang lens, or do you find its decent enough once stopped down?
@johnrutterphotography
@johnrutterphotography 2 года назад
Thanks Dominic 👍, I have had close calls with knocking my tripod plenty of times, but a bit of coffee and a camp chair helps alot. I'm naturally a night person so I don't find it hard at all I guess years of shift work helped. The samyang 35 1.4 is good for what I use it for (panoramas) it's not perfect in the corners even at 2.8 but essentially I only use the centre of the frame. I haven't tested the new 35 1.4 AF samyang or the sony 35 but am interested to see how they perform.

Well i must say its not impossible anymore , what a ripper of a pano . You know your gonna have to blows this up and make it a very large print. Question i have is the foreground lighting ,clearly you lightpainted the car but the left side of the picture , was natural light ?
@johnrutterphotography
@johnrutterphotography 2 года назад
Now the proof of concept is done, I will shoot more images like this hopefully with less airglow so orion pops more. Definitely gona print this huge for sure. I ended up using a full natural light foreground shot in the twilight and just got creative in post production.

Do you now if the Genie Mini II which is a motorized pan/tilt device would work with Sky Watcher Sky Adventurer? - The genie mini has a panorama mode where you can set like the exact overlap and stuff and I’m wondering that maybe I could do a tracked panorama with it instead of using a ball head and moving it myself, so you think it’s possible?
@johnrutterphotography
@johnrutterphotography 2 года назад
I have never tried any sort of automated setup. I'm sure it could work.
@BLarsenPhoto
@BLarsenPhoto 2 года назад
How many rows and how many shots altogether did it end up being? My concern with trying this is getting the Pano high enough because the arch is so high in the sky. I tried it once but didn't go high enough so it cut off the top of the arch and also distorted the top of the image. I've just ordered the same Pano rotator and 2 way head that you use so that should help a lot with doing panos and be much more precise than the z bracket I've been using. I assume too that you started from the bottom section below Orion first as that's the part that sets first.
@johnrutterphotography
@johnrutterphotography 2 года назад
The image was 3 rows high (in portrait) with a 35mm lens. When you shoot at this time of year, the camera will basically point straight up to get the top of the arch, This image was shot differently to how I normally do it, I shot vertical rows instead of horizontal rows, I started in the western sky and worked east, in the timelapse you can see the camera position throughout the night
@martinams1439
@martinams1439 2 года назад
Awesome shot again John. Quick one, do you re-level after each shot or each row/column? And do you do the leveling before or after you've moved to the next frame? Cheers
@johnrutterphotography
@johnrutterphotography 2 года назад
I normally re level after every second shot. And i re level then move to the next shot, not that the order matters its just how I do it.
