The show was incredibly fun and endearing. I was literally about to cancel my Netflix subscription, because I don’t really use it anymore, and decided to give One Piece a try to see whether it was a train wreck or not. Ended up binging the show over two days. Literally became my favorite thing this week. Now, perhaps Netflix has earned a bit of a reprieve .. perhaps 😂

It condenses parts of the arcs, expand upon other elements, and even adapt several things that would come later earlier, introducing a larger scale of world-building East Blue didn't have at the start (in fact, One Piece was supposed to be short at the start of the publication, so it only makes sense that Oda would like to properly revisit adding extra foreshadowing and character build-up).

The Baroque Works agent recruiting Zoro is actually sort of canon. In the manga, Zoro is clear about having been approached by Baroque Works to join them, while there was also proof that the Mr. 7 was a replacement because the previous one died in the course of his duties. And if you look at SBS (the Q&A section where Oda responds to questions from his fans), he even offered a very small sketch of this old Mr. 7 which is a pretty perfect match to the poor disemboweled sod that made an enemy out of Zoro. Including this is actually a great way to set up the future story in a way that respects the source material immensely.
@sparklestone7069
@sparklestone7069 9 месяцев назад
Mr. 7 was not important in the manga or the anime and was just mentionned by Zoro. But i also do understand why they included the fight of zoro with Mr.7, it was to introduce Zoro in a cool way but i could have been done differently and should have use that time to show when the gurl give him the onigri and get attached as punishement for whatever.

I disagree with your critique of the tonal balance. I’ve always found the manga & anime to bob & weave through goofy & dark narrative tones. & I see no reason that wouldn’t make sense to do for the live action series, which I believe it did. I hear a lot of the same criticisms you pose here from other anime fan RU-vidrs as well. The issue I have is you pose a lot of your interpretations of the source material as points of fact rather than what they are… your interpretations of the source material. You can’t take for granted that other fans of the series see Luffy, Nami & the rest of the crew as you do. If we truly want these series we love like One Piece to endure we can’t be THIS guarded against changes when it comes to its adaptations. All our takes are subjective of course, but despite my disagreements I appreciate your honest review.

Live action is not meant to be additive to anime, but to introduce the story to people who would not naturally pick up a manga or watch an anime. I never watched the anime, only live action and I actually loved the live action and didn't feel the lack of motivation you're talking about. I was very clear on why each member joined the crew. It sounds like the anime hammered in on these points more, but as a complete noob to the series they definitely gave me enough motivation. With that all said I think they can make improvements for season 2. Keep the pacing they have, but increase the set and CGI budget. Also, please dirty up the outfits. @danpmss

The thing that makes it more impressive than Kenshin is that this was One Piece. Kenshin is mostly incredibly grounded even with the more absurd enemies. One Piece is as cartoony and slapstick with its antiques as you get, even in serious moments that would make one anxious or heartbroken. It's very hard to make that work in live-action, and somehow this team's effort was nothing short of a miracle that delivered just that: a functional real life One Piece with all the goofy still inside. To break the Holywood curse (another thing, Kenshin was a japanese production, their methods are different) with One Piece of all things is almost what The Mask did in the 90s (when people also judged it impossible to adapt to live action for the longest time and mocked the idea til the movie released).

Most of the review was technical nitpicks due to budget constraints and some writing issues with some forced dialogue. But the way I see it, they did an awesome job capturing the fun, comedic, serious and dark parts of the manga in East Blue saga. A lot of the action was great, especially Zoro’s fight scenes as well as the dynamic camera movements within the fights. Luffy’s stretchiness was better than I expected. Stretch powers are always gonna look weird but it’s a matter of getting over it because it fits the crazy energetic essence of the world, especially since there are other characters with even more outlandish powers. As far as everyone’s inspiration for joining the crew, they pretty much nailed that aspect in that they all have their own goals, so they stick with each other and the energetic momentum of Luffy to set out and accomplish them no matter what. That’s the main idea present both in the manga and live-action that was executed pretty well and I loved it. We saw enough of everyone’s backstories to resonate with their desires to follow their dreams, except Usopp. I hope in season 2 Usopp gets deeper introspection which will give more weight to his purpose for joining the crew.

The first 5 chapters were going great even with it changes, the cast was amazing and both Helmeppo and Buggy surprised me. But there where two changes that made me feel unmotivated to continue watching (I still did but it was a weird feeling). First, Sanji not being present at Zoro's fight vs Mihawk, as I feel like it was pivotal for Sanji's character. The second one is Nojiko and Genzo not being a support for Nami all this years, especially taking out any meaningful connection between Nami and Genzo (his father figure).

Im a one piece fan since the early 2000s, and I absolutely enjoy the live action. While I agree that there are major differences, coming in with the mindset that it won't be a 1:1 retelling of the story and expecting changes helped make the experience better. They captured some of the most memorable bits in the East Blur saga (Garp throwing cannon balls or Zoro losing his way for example) while adding its own spin on things One thing you may have missed is how Koby is getting more exposure and character development in the live action, which is great IMO. I can accept that they could do things better, like the yellow/orange filter you mentioned, but those are trivial to me. Then again, I have a low bar in enjoyment, so that's that. Great review BTW

Honestly, I feel like you were unfairly critical. It definitely had its flaws, but it seems like you're just picking it apart for not being 1 to 1 with the anime or manga. Yet you also question its purpose, stating it doesn't bring anything new to the table. We can't really have both, can we? Let's be real, One Piece, and Oda's humor, isn't for everyone. They had to make changes so the series would appeal to a much wider audience. Hell, when I first tried watching One Piece when I was a teenager in the 2000's, I hated it. It wasn't until I gave it another chance in my 20's that I started to enjoy it, and eventually love it. The live action serves as an excellent entry point for potential new fans into the series by making things more grounded and relatable to a wider audience. That's the adaptations main purpose. Someone who hasn't watched much, or any anime, will watch this and most likely enjoy it, which can lead to more people joining the community. I think we can all agree that's a positive thing. For One Piece fans, the purpose is to give us an enjoyable adaptation of a series we love. That's it. Do we even need anything more than that? I didn't go into this hoping for groundbreaking material. I went into this hoping for an enjoyable 8 hours and I can happily saw I got that. Too many times have we been disappointed by terrible adaptations to where that's all we expect from them. This series proved its possible to make an anime adaptation that's enjoyable without butchering the source material. Of course I'm upset about some things, but for the most part they're minor complaints. At the end of things, I only had two major complaints being the lack of Hachi and how the Strawhats were nerfed, the rest were just nitpicks. Even with my complaints, its understandable why they changed those things. An underdog story is more widely enjoyable than an overpowered hero story, hence the nerf. I don't like the change, but it appeals to a wider audience, so it's understandable. As for Hachi, the amount of work, practical or cgi, that would be involved in making him would have been way too high. As much as I love his character, it's just not practical for live action. They would have butchered him. So I think cutting him was the better play. As for the added Garp stuff. While kind of unnecessary, it makes sense if we assume they plan to continue the adaptation. Reading the manga, it was a little jarring seeing the change with Koby and Helmeppo come out of nowhere. This way, when they get to that point, viewers won't be caught off guard with the big changes they go through. We've seen a hint of Garp's strength, we know Koby and Helmeppo are gonna be trained by him directly, so their changes will be more acceptable when we get to that time. Overall, I think it was a solid adaptation, the best I've seen, and I really hope we see more of this.

Your review is quite fair. One Piece Live Action is a good starter for a non-One Piece fan --- in a sense, it makes the story a digestible version for those who have no patience for 44+ episodes of anime (the estimated number of anime episodes equivalent to the live action season). On the other hand, a hardcore One Piece fan would definitely have comments and some nitpicking to do. This, in a sense, is the drawback to having limited number of episodes and resources. Still, if we compare this to other adaptations of other manga and anime, this definitely sets the bar for future film makers who wish to make a live action "acceptable."

I haven't read the manga or watch the One Piece anime, but after the Netflix series I definately will. I've seen and read Naruto and Bleach, but aestethics of One Piece was something that kept me from delving into this world for a very long time. Finally I got the impuls to return to it. I really enjoyed watching this series. After so many bad live-actions, I lost faith that I would ever see a good one. Even if there are changes from the original material, I think Netflix has done a very good job of making the story look good and attractive. Can't wait for the second season!
@Aviertje

I think your comment regarding fans not allowing criticism is slightly true, but I think it needs to be seen in the context of live action history. Live action adaptations tend to not do well, and Netflix especially has a horrible track record. Fans are actually very positively surprised by how well this adaptation has gone, and it is common knowledge that Eiichiro Oda considers this his last chance to introduce the story to a new audience during his lifetime. Know this: Oda is as beloved as his creation is! So I think for the majority of the fanbase, it is not about not accepting criticism, but about getting through to the big cheeseballs at Netflix who decide whether or not to get a second season created. Remember that the WGA strikes came at the most unfortunate time, and most of the individuals involved were unable to promote it, so fans are trying to make up for that. (And sure, the fans also want a second season!) The pushes for fans to watch through every second of the show, and to make sure they properly rate the show after watching it are very consistent. The fandom is much like the Strawhats themselves: a found family sharing a common cause. The desire to preserve the momentum that is currently present and finally give One Piece the breakthrough opportunity in the mass public consciousness is very much present, and it is unavoidable that in the eyes of some, this indeed takes the shape of not allowing criticism. But if you dig just a bit deeper, you'll find that there are plenty of people who have their own criticisms on the productions and decisions made... but we still want to ensure that positive comments dominate so that it does not endanger the ordering of a second season.

I’ve encountered some of the unhealthy discourse around this show, but for me, it was the opposite of what you described. I came across a comment that was posted before the show came out, which said “let’s hope the show manages to appeal to 20% of the One apiece fanbase”, basically saying he hopes it succeeds, and I replied to him saying that the show managed to appeal to *more* than 20% of the fanbase, and suddenly the guy started attacking me, accusing me of being “smarmy” when all I was doing was confirming that his hopes were well placed, as if he was actually p¡ssed off that he was right about the show succeeding. I was honestly blown away by such an odd reaction to what I said.

the Baroque works introduction in the form of Mr. 7 recruiting Zoro is canonically accurate. it's just in the Manga and Anime, it was just a throw away line from when Zoro first met with Mr. 1. it was not shoehorned into the east blue saga, the scene was a more well rounded event that both gave a badass introduction to Zoro and a foreshadowing of Alabasta. this is just one the many scenes that were added to the LA that seemed as afterthought in anime and manga which gives the LA it's own flavor and identity

The live action series happens to be my introduction to One Piece. I knew what it was, but never read the manga or watched the anime (until after binge watching the live action). Art of all kinds are open to criticism and I'm sure there are always flaws to be found even if considered a masterpiece. However, I think it's okay to watch something and judge it on its own without comparing it to the other mediums of the material. A live action series will never be able to fully match a manga or anime especially when it's geared towards a western audience. Things will inevitably have to be left out or moved around. I just love the fact that they actually respected the source material and the creator was heavily involved.

I finished watching ep 1 - 6. I have to say I disagree with you on most part, however I'm glad you at least gave it a proper critique instead of just shitting on it for the sake of it. However here's somthings you ignored 1. Zoro didn't just join luffy for no reason. Luffy frees him so he can follow his dream which then leads him to help him out until at least he reaches grand line. So you're completely wrong when you said he joined for no reason. 2. The music and sound effects were amazing you completely ignored this part. 3. Luffy being an underdog works really well in the show and the story. Specially in moments like where he is drowning you feel empathy towards his character. In the anime/manga luffy is more of a badass I agree but at the same time for me his character portrayal at some moments were better, He actually feels like real person instead of a cookie cut shonen protagonist who barely has any lines in the story. I think Luffy having more dialogue and being an underdog adds a lot to the story that's just not there in the manga or anime. For a change he actually feels like a three dimensional character this adds a lot to the story. 4. You're wrong about Nami as well, I love Nami in the anime or manga but she feels more like a real person in this show. She's clearly traumatized by what happened so it makes sense for her to be a bit put off, it takes time for her to open up. Also again you're wrong Luffy helped her escape the marine base, so her joining or helping him makes sense. Not to mention Nami tried to use Luffy against buggy to escape, then when she realized buggy destroyed a whole town and how luffy after beating buggy frees the town, it makes sense for her to gain sympathy for luffy and respect. So that's why she fixes his hat it's not for no reason. 5. When it comes Sanji, his backstory with Zeff was the best imo. It got the most emotional reaction out of me. The acting by both the child actor and the guy playing zeff was just phenomenal. Again real life acting with real actors just hits different as much as I love the anime. This again adds a lot to the story. I wasn't a big fan of how they shortened baratie arc. However I don't blame the writers I'm sure they wanted to do this but Netflix I don't think will allow that. Hopefully if we get a second season they can get 10 - 13 eps to do the story justice. For me him joining Luffy makes sense because he wasn't really happy at baratie, I always so that as the main reason for joining luffy along with his heart to heart with Luffy. The conversation between them was better in the live action because it felt more natural and realistic. Just two co workers chatting. So him joining makes sense I didn't have an issue. 6. I disagree with Usopp I think the actor is great but his story was kind of cut short so that's the only negative for me. I think you're wrong to say it adds nothing, it does. It makes luffy seem more realistic or more like a real person while still having the charm, which was absent in the anime/manga. The acting while not perfect added a sense of realism that I think the story benefits a lot from. The music and choreography, costumes were fantastic. ep 3 - 4 honestly felt like a tim burton movie in a good way. Also Coby is given a lot more emotional depth that was not there in the anime/manga. While not perfect Overall I really liked this live action, I hope we get a season 2.

Lots of fans like it while the more unforgiving one hate due to not 1 to 1. However, it has been generally quite positive for completely blind viewers like you it seems, and that is a HUGE understated success. Honestly if we get more seasons and as long the newcomers like it and it does critically well, imma treat the anime and manga fans like how I treat Harry Potter fans, ignore and only listen to them if you want to know how it really went down in the source material. Honestly I loved the live action after being a fan for almost 20 years! I was never expecting it to add to or surpass the manga, but overall I really liked the streamlining they did to the story (RIP Jango). I would have to disagree a little with what you said about Nami: sure she was written as more of a downer in the live action, but I really liked the subtleties the actress added during the small moments where she's being won over by Luffy (like trusting her with the grand line map, reinforcing that he's a different kind of pirate, showing his determination in sticking up for his friends with his fight with Kuro to name a few). Also I'd say with Garp I believe they made him out to be more serious to subvert new audience members' idea of him, making the twist at the end more impactful... hopefully they'll show his more goofy side in future seasons. But other than all that, this video analysis was spot on imo, really excellent job with the critique and for the effort you put in!

The actors are well cast, no 'highflyers', the cannon/non-cannon can be quite tricky to get it right, but they did morph the goofystuff and 'odd' stuff from the anime/manga pretty damn well. Not ruled by 'political' or other motives, i dont say it often.. but Netflix.. you done well on this one, very very well.

Garp always goes on in outrages outburst especially when it comes to Luffy. Like have you seen Garp and Luffy flashbacks when Garp was training him as a kid. Garp is always like breaking, punching and kicking stuff when it votes to disciplining Luffy. And the Warlords mostly don't really give a fuck what even the "Admirals" say to them. Look at Hancock. Like She don't like the idea of the Government really ordering her. She won't attend the Marine Ford war if it weren't for Luffy. Also the other Warlords are mostly there because they either have hidden agendas or is gonna get a reward they want or they don't have anything better to do. Don't know what you expect from the Warlords but loke most Pirates they really don't mind picking fights with people who might actually be significantly stronger than them. Also if there are high officials of Marine anyone would feel safer to disrespect, Garp is a good one. Because he isn't likely to make it a grudge and go kill you for it.

Live action was a solid 7/10 imo I think nerfing Luffy was a good idea. One shotting opponents from the get-go would’ve been so appealing. Child actors were major problem specially Zoro and Luffy. Kuina’s facial expression was hard to watch without cringing. On contrary, I really enjoyed Arlong and how he was portrayed. Alvida, Buggy, Kuro. Arlong- all the villains were great. I only hoped for captain Morgan to be more fleshed out for Garp to have publicly execute him. He didn’t seem to be a bad guy in the adaption, he was just narcissistic- not enough reason for him to be publicly executed, unlike manga where he killed fellow marines. Acting could’ve been better. The emotional impact was almost non-existent. Shanks losing his arm felt bland and so did Sanji-Zeff farewell. Zoro promising Luffy not to lose a fight ever again was… disappointing (acting wise). Imo live action also butchered Garp’s character. Garp calling Mihawk to go after Luffy was so uncharacteristic, then throwing tantrum after Mihawk refused to capture Luffy was downright hilarious! They turned the most legendary Marine into a clown. While I can note down many more mistakes, I also think it wasn’t so bad overall. A lot of us would still watch season 2 with a hope of seeing many more improvements. I think they did great hyping Baroque works so early on.
