What a nice change it is to have nice clear instructions with proper audio and video. Well done, much appreciated. ( Your next project should be an instruction on how to make brilliant videos for RU-vid for the people that can't even tie their own shoe laces. ( and watch the ratings ^ )

Really good explanation. Have 3 windows with salty corrosion on the locks, so will not even close properly. Am thinking I could do the replacement - wish me luck!

Thanks Ian for your kind comments and comment about length of the old one to new one As long as you choose the correct backset and length (N:B dependant on make you will find that the actual length may be rounded up to the nearest full length I:E 800mm is actually 780mm) this makes no difference as the rods always finish shorter than the actual Upvc material they are screwing to. Simply move the frame keeps to suit the new lock points and if need be open the routed slot to accommodate the new lock with a craft knife or sharp wood chisel. The handle will always fit back in situ as the dimensions are universal. hope this helps

Thank you for a fantastic clear explanation of the different types of what's need and how to identify them but you didn't mention what happens if what you need too do if the new ones are not exactly the same length as the old mechanism ie new one is 900mm and old is 880mm .

Hi Jane not difficult to do and I would suggest do the first one with best access etc and its one of those once you have done one the others are easy TIP: big blob of Vaseline on all the moving parts will keep them lubricated however if you are in a high salt content area rust will be a constant issue

It is impossible to answer categorically as there is no such thing as a quick and easy tool. It is always a bit of a labour of love unfortunately You need to get a flat scraper such as the sash opening tool & get it to go between the sash and frame and try to knock the lock cams out of the keep if you can get to one of them not necessarily the jammed one you might find it also drives all the locks open But the trick is slowly and gently so as not to over stress the sash and crack it. Hope this helps. However, if this does not work You may need to de-glaze the window to get more movement and not crack the glass & drill through the back of the sash so that you can come into the chamber where the lock rod / shoot bolt is situated and you can then force the mechanism into the open position therefore opening the window TIP You need to drill through the back of the sash so that you can come into the chamber where the lock rod / shoot bolt is situated until you strike the shoot bolt extension that is not moving and then you can then force the mechanism into the open position therefore opening the window Quite often when the drill hits the extension bolt it auto moves the bolt and the rotation of the drill bit forces it to spring open (not guaranteed) but if not you can drill an hole big enough to be able to push a screw driver through and push the bolt open You can decide where to drill by Using another window that is using the same gearing & still operating so you can measure the dimension of where the lock is situated so you can then drill in the correct position on the faulty one Hope this helps.
