Holy crap, I built almost the same circuit 2 days ago. I edited the video and it's still uploading 2 hours later right now. I was swapping caps to alter frequency, drew out a chart with cap/frequency relation but left that part out. And YES the mosfet gets VERY hot! I used a .1mf cap in the end. I used a mini oscope to measure frequency and added a pot for frequency adjustment. i didn't go as high in frequency, measure current, or use an ignition coil. nice video! much better arcs and to the point.
@electronicsNmore

Adjusting the POT will allow the mosfet to only be warm using the same coil that I used.

That's pretty cool! I can't imagine it'd be too useful as a diagnostic aid, but what it DOES do is demonstrate a very real phenomenon in automotive ignition systems: Coil saturation. As charge frequency (engine RPM) increases, coil output power decreases. This is why automotive manufacturers have moved from single coil distributor ignitions to coil on plug electronically controlled ignitions. The extra few milliseconds each coil has to build a charge makes a huge difference to the amount of spark energy released at the spark plug, allowing for a bigger gap (better fuel burn) and more reliable high RPM operation. :D I may have to build one of these to use as an educational aid! Really cool!
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 8 лет назад
Actually it's excellent for a coil tester. Resistance measurements won't tell you if the coil winding is breaking down due to the HV. With the tester you can see if the coil is able to produce a nice spark.
@farmerjim-fat-man-do

@@electronicsNmore the timing circuit and ability to change the frequency will be great for testing an automotive coil. Calculate the firing frequency at a specific engine RPM and use a capacitor to match that frequency on the test rig. Use an adjustable Gap spark tester and you be able to tell if your spark is breaking up at a specific RPM.

I'm a bit lost as description "THIS DENSO DIRECT IGNITION COIL IS ONLY MENTIONED FOR 4 VALVE HEADS/ENGINES" what is difference ignition coil for 2 valves and 4 valves? - both cases are single cylinder.

Hello! Thank you for the circuit! I made it and it's working perfect. Now i have a question. As i use it for spark plug tester, i wanted to increase the spark by using capacitors, as shown in many videos, but there's no nearly any difference in sparks, even when using 3 stacks by 3 capacitors. What could be the reason? Does this circuit gives reliable information about the spark of spark plugs? I tested old standard - copper spark plug NGK vs. new Iridium NGK, and there was almost any difference in the spark...

Could you use something like this drive an electric fence, or is there enough current to be fatal? Just curious because I've been zapped by spark plug wires, but heard there wasn't enough amperage to kill you.

The current output is very low, "Usually", not enough to kill. You can use this for a fence, but I would reduce the input voltage for a less painful shock. Be careful, and use good quality insulators. Make it at your own risk.

I made a ignition driver circuit a while back based solely on a relay wired to self-oscillate. The coil of the relay was placed in series with the ignition coil, and the normally open contacts were connected across the relay coil so that when current flowed, it would activate the relay and then the relay contacts would close, allowing current to flow through the ignition coil contacts. Shortly after the relay contacts would reopen and because a

@waswestkan
@waswestkan 8 лет назад
Connect two 12 volt batteries in series to feed the coil 24 Volts. The brave and cautious could rectify the line voltage to see if the coil windings would withstand 120+ volts. That don't rectify the line voltage and feed the coil with 12+ volts AC. In the event the smoke stays inside the coil with 1200 line volts try 240
@crnazvijezda
@crnazvijezda 8 лет назад
Hmm, not resolution. Boosting ignition coil can have bad results. Connecting two ignition coils on two drivers like: One driver is connected to first ignition coil like positive-negative and another driver going negative-positive connection (opposite connection terminals than on first). Connecting plus from first ignition input and minus from second ignition coil input giving serial connection. On this way one ignition coil became positive and another ignition coil becaise negative and potential difference between two ignition coils (center output terminals) will be doubled 20kV+20kV....
@CharlieGosh
@CharlieGosh 3 года назад
Clearly illustrates the need for a CDI (capacitive discharge) ignition system. As the frequency (RPM of the engine) increases, the coil's magnetic field doesn't have enough time to fully saturate before a spark is generated. Spark is diminished at high RPM's, so engine has less power.

@Willam_J
@Willam_J 7 лет назад
SODA510 - Most electric fences are "pulsed output" so that in case a human should touch it, they would be able to let go between pulses. Also, some just store a charge to give the animal a shock and then slowly charge up again when discharged. The latter of those are usually the solar type. Considering the cost of posts, wire, insulators, warning signs, etc., the cost of a commercial electric fence controller is minimal. You're walking into nothing but trouble by making home made equipment like that. If someone were to inadvertently touch your creation and get hurt or killed, you would surely get sued, let alone how you'd feel if your device killed or hurt someone. Commercial manufacturers take into account that a human may touch it and work that into their design. (Pulsed output, known voltage and current output, etc.) Even then, they can still hurt people or possibly even kill them if they have medical conditions or implanted devices. I know you want to help your friends out, but this is something that you might want to think twice about. Just some friendly advice. :-)

I don't know, to be honest. It was a small generator, which had been abandoned in a seasonal pond, and shot full of holes. The coil was intact, but rusted and had no label on it. I think any ignition coil that has an iron core sticking out both ends, should work with this circuit. Also, any coil that has a core which loops around the outside might work, if you wound the "feedback coil" in the right place. The fully enclosed ignition coils like the one electronicsnmore has, may or may not work, depending on whether the core has an internal loop, and depending on whether or not the case is metal.
