@@Freeman_pedia ​​⁠ : As Egyptians, it’s easy for us to forgive ol’ Louis IX, since his “crusade” ended pretty well for our country (thank God!). It was a hard fought affair, and with some better organization and less bumbling, Louis IX’s army might have conceivably reached Cairo. This was especially the case, in light of the relative chaos and indecision that reigned on the Ayyubid/Mamluke side, in light of Sultan as-Salih Ayyub’s untimely death, and the fact that his only male heir (Prince Turan Shah) wasn’t even in Egypt at the time (the prince had been serving as the governor of the fortress city of Hisn Kayfa, in the Jazirah region in the borderlands of Iraq and Anatolia). This was while the Crusade of Louis IX was rampaging through the Nile Delta, and while the flags of the French King were flying over the Egyptian city of Damietta (or more properly: Dumyatt). To his credit, Turan Shah did manage to return in time, to play a part in the final climactic battles of this pivotal campaign. Thankfully in any case, when the going got really tough, the Ayyubid/Mamluke armies managed to pull themselves together, and launched a vigorous and well coordinated counteroffensive against the crusading army. Louis IX’s army was utterly smashed, with every last man being either killed in battle, taken captive, defecting, or eventually surrendering alongside King Louis and his entourage. Thanks to the efforts of the Ayyubid/Mamluke army, Egypt-and the Islamic World-gained a stunning victory, took Europe’s most important king prisoner, and was paid a very literal _king’s ransom_ for its trouble. Best of all, the house where the King of France was held prisoner while his ransom was scraped together-the Ibn Luqman House in the city of al-Mansourah-still exists. The Ibn Luqman House is open for visitors, and everyone from tourists to schoolchildren can inspect the very house where Louis IX got to enjoy some fine local post-battle hospitality-I’ve heard that the chains he was kept in are still there to see. It was certainly nice of him to pay his bill in full, before his departure. And of course, it’s easy to be magnanimous towards a defeated enemy, is it not? Alas, for King Louis, he never learned his lesson. He continued his crusading mischief in the Levant, but it was further west where his final chapters played out. Louis IX met his end underneath the walls of yet another Muslim city, this time with Tunis having the honor of seeing him laid low, thanks to handiwork of particularly vicious dysentery epidemic. Stuff happens, ya know?
