Improve your backstroke technique with the most underrated skill of the stroke

This skill will help you improve the most if you already know how to swim backstroke but you are not that good at it. I believe that it will change the way you swim for the better. It helped me a lot when I first learned it.
Anyone that has swam the 200 backstroke knows the importance of the legs on this stroke. On this video we will talk about the kicking technique while swimming backstroke and how to improve it.
Many backstrokers are good at underwater dolphin kick, but we have covered that in earlier videos. It is very important, however, to keep a fast flutter kick in the back after using your legs very intensely underwater. This is why backstrokers need to have powerful resistant legs. If you don’t kick effectively during backstroke the legs will sink and you will have a hard time moving forward.
So how do we train backstroke kick? my favorite way of kicking on my back is like this. I like to kick with my hands sticking out of the water because it gives me a sense of how well my body is floating. To build stamina we do several hundred yards divided in fast intervals. Let’s say 5 x 100s fast resting only 10 seconds. Next time we do it maybe a week later we rest 7 seconds then the next week 5 seconds rest and finally we end up doing the 5x100s fast kick with only 3 seconds rest in between. This way your legs build endurance while you learn to recover faster and faster.
Now there is still one part of the backstroke kick that you will need to master to swim fast. As I have mentioned before, the rotation of the body in backstroke is very important. So what happens to the legs while you rotate? well they rotate with the whole body as well while continuing the fast kick. This is probably the most complicated part of the stroke. So to build muscle memory you need to practice this. Grab the edge of the pool and practice kicking while rotating. Do this several times until you feel that you can do it right. Then, put your arms by your side and kick while rotating. These drills are extremely helpful for a good backstroke swimming technique and if you want to swim more effectively I recommend doing these often.

Trying to rotate is more tiring for me then swimming backstroke. But then I'm 73, but still train 3 times a week 😉

Not wery well... It was my first time and back is my weakest stroke. I dont remember my time but it wasn't amazing :)

My biggest problem is my right arm or shoulder is stronger than my left arm causing my direction to turn rather than going straight. I try to correct this but not sure how.

I'm thirteen and currently have a 1:05 in short course yards for the 100 backstroke, and I'm trying to reach the zones time, which is around a 1:03. I need more ways to improve my backstroke to get there. If anyone can help me, that would be amazing!

I can easily do backstroke but keep swallowing water when it splashes onto my face. I have to stop just at around 10m because I start choking. How can I prevent that from happening?

One thing I haven't seen, or at least noticed in any back stroke video is the beat pattern for the kick, and linking the kick to the arm pull. I would guess that the same 6 beat kick that is used with freestyle is used with the back stroke, maybe the 4 beat and 2 beat as well. I would think that linking the arm pull to the kick would maybe be the same as well, but not sure. This would be recover arm and opposite side leg up/front kick link. I have been playing around with it some as my relax length of the pool rest between sets. Nothing feels normal about this stroke to me, at present. Last time I put any effort into it, they were still teaching the straight arm pull, which was a looooooong time ago..... Looks like you have some arm drills you haven't outlined/detailed, like a half pull with your friend who has the Mexican records. It will be a while before I get to doing any power with backstroke as I am more focused on my side stroke.

It was a while ago.... With freestyle, like Raul does with his Arrow freestyle, right arm pulls, right leg kicks frontside/down. With back stroke, it is the opposite. Right arm pulls, left leg kicks up/front side.

Took some lessons when I was young, but didn't really start swimming until college. Used to run all the time, but now I got bad knees :( But swimming is good!! Love your vids! Keep up the good work! :)
