As an autistic person, I have deliberately stayed away from Love on the Spectrum, cus it always gave me a sceptical feeling about it’s intention/ability to treat autistic adults with respect.

What we need to see in autistic representation is not just the challenges faced by us but the cruelty and callousness of NTs.

I think people like these kinds of videos because 1/2 of your autism traits aren’t edited out, and we as a community sorely lack accurate representation, so it’s just really refreshing to see ourselves in media and relate. I don’t mean to say that when you edit, you are masking, I just mean that of course when there is a planned script and editing, things inherently get cut out of the final product, and you end up with a more distilled final product.

I don't really watch TV (I've seen an episode or two of the US series and follow one of the people from the show on RU-vid). I enjoy watching neurodivergent people get really passionate about the stuff they feel strongly about. It's very normalizing of my own feelings. ❤

Totally agree with you Orion. The whole premise is not observational but voyeuristic. That’s why they didn’t want to take on board what you said; that’s why they are not paying the cast; that’s why they dn’t want the woman who wanted to date NTs, because they are completely disingenuous and really they just want a to stage an exotic show for neurotypicals to watch so they can rake in the $$$$

I watch the unedited videos because it’s refreshing to see someone talk, behave & sound like me. 💜 I like the edited topic videos too but it really is comforting to see you struggle to communicate, repeat yourself, etc. like I do. I am 43, only diagnosed for 4 years & I am really tired of the mask. Thank you for being real & vulnerable for us💜.

I agree with you Orion. You passionately gave your opinion and I would hazard a guess and say you are not the only autistic person that feel this way. I will and have not watched the show. Watching trailers, highlights and reviews of actual autistic reviewers, I instinctively knew this was not for me. I am actually very intuitive. Autistic reviewers generally “questioned aspects such as editing choices, focusing on parental reactions and the neurotypical coaching, that preferenced neurotypical perspectives and infantalised the neurodivergent cast members. The show is also riddled with bad advice.” In my opinion this a scripted show produced by ableists for neurotypical people watching “weird people date”…. I apologise, I hate the word but that is what most NTs think. That’s my opinion.

Honestly I haven't been able to watch the show because of the cringe factor of akwardness (which has nothing to do with autism). It's right up there on my discomfort factor of wedding bloopers, physical accidents, and capturing people's embarrassing moments. So, I'm not in anyone's for or against camp😂 Love watching your unmasked unedited segments.

Watching clips of this "documentary" gave me the impression that the people behind the camera view autistic people like zoo animals or pets up for adoption, which harkens back to an uncomfortable part of history where similar concepts were taken to an extreme in the name of "anthropology." However... The one thing out of that show that I feel could in fact benefit people like me is one short segment where the therapist person (forgot her name, sorry 😞) tells one of the autistic people something along the lines of "It's alright if you can't think of anything to say if there's a lull in the conversation. People will still like you even if you don't talk." As an autistic person who went through God knows how many "supportive education" classes and programs having a usually NT educator preach at me about "having good people skills, making small talk, and being sociable and friendly to keep people interested in you or you won't make or keep any friends," hearing those words not just from a therapist but an AUTISTIC therapist took such a huge weight off my shoulders. Especially considering how almost physically painful it is for me to start and hold meaningful interactions. Everything else about Love On The Spectrum can go to Hell... but I liked that one bit.

Sone of the music used sounds almost EXACTLY like the music in a cutesy “in the life of a zoo” set of chronical-style documentaries from the bbc (I think the bbc, could be wrong.) the music was used for mating attempts with various species, and clumsy newborns, I heard that music on THIS documentary when they were showing someone fumbling, and zooming in on other patrons of the restaurant, and I instantly got a HUGE ick. They literally presented the show as a zoo. Sure the team might have been pretty nice to the cast members while filming, but the editing style and presentation shows it was a disingenuous premise given to the cast members. And why are they not paid? Most participants on “competition” style shows at least have the chance of a goal at the end, even if not everyone is paid.. at least they have a potential CHANCE. also why not spread that across all the cast members if it’s not a competition? Nah, it was zoo show. It was “look at these silly autistics.. they are so clueless, laugh at their dumb mistakes.” Why else would they ZOOM in on other patrons in a restaurant? They were trying to highlight and get a laugh at it, especially with the silly, infantilizing zoo music playing.

Same here and I believe the rates of autism are much higher than what is estimated. After doing research on my own and taking to a neurodivergent specialist I am certain that my entire immediate family is on the spectrum (myself included) and none of us are diagnosed.
@Autisticelder
@Autisticelder 4 месяца назад
Yeah, they should have been paid . It was just another way they were taking advantage of disabled people. The one you were talking about on the US season 2 that makes the noises you said you make as well , is a sign of anxiety which I can relate to having more than one anxiety disorder. If you noticed, they used to take big breaths between speaking because of their anxiety. The show was basically taking the micky out of them using them as the joke for entertainment when they were clearly struggling and frustrated not being able to communicate what they were feeling. I am so bloody angry at the way they exploited these people and as far as I am concerned, they used their disability against them. I don't know why so many people cannot see the reality of this. I am 66 and autistic and maybe it’s because I can see it like it really is. Young autistic people are still learning a lot about life and can be more easily fooled into thinking someone is trying to help them rather than exploit them. The dating advice was for teenagers at best, and modelled on shallow neurotypical methods when autistic people need something different . It also begs the question, why is an autistic coach trying to help people with neurotypical methods and childish ones as well ? The whole was a sick joke.

Programs like this are also infantilising their audience, by showing them a distorted view of the world. There has been an increase in "wildlife shows" (NOT documentaries, but classed as such) that anthropomorphise the animals & even use a narrative, presumably to elicit specific emotions in the audience. Watched one about bears that obviously used several different bear families (cubs were different colours!) to fulfil the narrative for the episode. Watched another about wolves, which did the same thing - several wolf families used to accommodate the scripted narrative.

Meant to say "reality" TV is like these scripted animal shows - patronising to the audience & disrespectful of the subjects. (edit for spelling 🙄)

I’m torn by the show. As a late diagnosis at 43 I enjoy recognising traits I have and learning the struggles we share, but the way it’s treated is exactly as you say. Infantilising. It’s the inclusion of the parents for sure that pushes it over the wrong edge. Well presented.

100% agree Orion. An autistic teacher, we have to undergo training in modern day slavery to help protect the young people we teach. This scenario stinks of modern day slavery!!! I’m a celebrity get me out of here is a reality show and the ‘cast’ get paid outrageous amounts, big brother, etc etc … this is a casted show and the cast are entitled to payment for services rendered. That said… what about X factor or britains got talent …. Actually scrap that, they’re competitions.

The thing I love about being somewhere on the spectrum is being able to form such water tight & unimpeachable arguments. Just like this, booyah! Sad situation though not at all surprising. This is why I stay away from any/all things labeled “social or reality” with the exception of YT and maybe reddit. I am alarmed at their willingness to ignore your direct feedback & surprised the ABC didn’t seek out consulting advice - the mantra within all communities generally is “nothing about us without us” I guess the mighty dollar won again

I started watching the show back when I didn't know I'm neurodivergent and I immediately loved the people. So I liked watching. But even in season 1 I started feeling weird about this coach lady and some of the parents and people in the background asking questions in the interview parts. Like the framing was so weird. Now I don't know if I'll watch the rest. It's also super fishy how the producers didn't want you to talk about the conversation you had with them. Ugh. I think you really nailed the points you made about how differently the cast here was treated and portrayed as opposed to other reality dating shows with neurotypical cast. This show wasnt made for people with autism, it was made as a spectical for "normal" people to watch and laugh at while feeling like they're being inclusive when they arent. If they treated any other cast from another show like that theres no way they'd get away with it, but because the cast is autistic they can because we as autistic people, generally speaking, we are so used to being ignored and treated lesser than, that we just accept it and are happy to be included even if its at our expense. These people are showing their vulnerabilities for all the world to see and arent even being paid, it reminds me of how the disabled were turned into "sideshow freaks" because thats the only way they could survive back in older times, It feels exploitative. Somehow saying that this drama Series is a documentary makes it feel even more offensive, its just a dating show but because it features people with disabilities its now in the same league as watching some exotic birds on a nature docu. The way some of the parents talk it comes off to me at least, as like zoo keepers watching animals reintegrade into the wild, the whole show just sounds so dehumanizing.

I've watched all of them to see if they improved. As an autistic person I found all the episodes Australia and the US to be shallow and exploiting autistic people for entertainment. I'm not a fan and I will not watch anymore. If I had my chance, I would have given the producers a piece of my mind. They don't give a sh-t about autistic people. It was made to make money at the expense of vulnerable autistic people for their own gain. I'm going to write an article about it and put it up on my website.

I don't enjoy dating shows so I haven't watched these either. I can say that I suspect the extra grumbles about people infantalizing autism has me scared to show some of my more childlike traits and likes and have people jump on me for 'pushing' the childlike image that some people hold autistic people to but I don't think it should be my sole responsibility. I shouldn't have to hide stuffies and glitter and lights and things that make me happier because someone else thinks its childish.

I think that (at least in the USA) the producers of this show want to misrepresent autistic people so that it will seem as if they are not disabled and society won't have to help them in any way. It's again, all about money. As for the cast playing in the show, I would argue that they are masking a lot of behaviors just to please the producers of the show.

I really don't understand why they couldn't have just told Kaelynn her not being included in season 2 was about her dating preferences instead of making up some BS story that they weren't going to be in her area. What would it have hurt to tell the truth? So disrespectful to lie to someone.

I am in the u.s. I don't watch t.v. but catch programs on amazon prime. If this is available it wouldn't interest myself. Sounds like Australian entertainmrnt industry mirrirs the u..s, guesdingbuf anyone were to produce a show that represebted a group of people accurately ? Maaayyybe the u.k. or france, orvither europeons that are good at not just lasilybgrinding out entertainment. Crap productions misepresent every group not just autistics. One if my most exhausting traits is the others being wronged by systems thst i csnnot affect and they are shit no matter what. I just get going on and can't stop..for weeks. I hope your sharing this helped a bit. Your followers are bright, caring, well spoken..guess your character attracts them.

Arguably none of the people on any of the dating / reality shows are taken care of by production.

I learned recently that I'm autistic. It seems that a lot of autistic people have made autism the centre of their being - and devoted everything toward talking about it. I'm not going to do that. I'm just getting on with my life. If anyone comments or asks why I seem to be a bit strange or different - then I will tell them that it's because I'm autistic. I don't expect them to become fascinated by the topic - they might just say 'oh okay' and then run away - which is fine.

I'm currently working on the australian series, even though I haven't watched the US version. This is absolutely a reality show. The music isn't as heavyhanded as the US version, but you're correct about the music. The stuff they play in the background when the neurotypical family is being shown has a strong Autism Speaks vibe.

One of my favorite episodes in the Australian seasons was when one of the autistic cast members went on a date with a neurotypical guy. It’d be very disappointing if they’re excluding that on purpose from the US seasons.

I wonder if Autism Speaks demanded some parent representation and other things. The speed dating event was run but someone wearing a puzzle piece logo. 🤷‍♀️

I think it’s fine to include parents, because realistically, they can be support persons for people with autism. Like for the guy with long blond curly hair (I forget his name…), his dad gives him advice that seems to be helpful for him for preparing. That felt fine to include. But the focus should remain on the person with autism, and their experience, not the traumatizing heart break that the medical community bestowed upon the parents of autistic kids in the 90s and 00s (I.e. they’ll never speak, they’ll never hug you, they’ll never succeed at anything - yeah, I’m sure being misinformed like that was world shattering, but what’s that got to do with love/dating on the spectrum?).

As an autistic I always tried to be myself and dating and learning the rules of dating, was a big challenge for me, but my mom introduced me to the show but I felt not just misrepresented but making me cringe because it seemed the editing only picked awkward moments in the life of some one who is autistic and it was hard to watch because it made me feel do I act like that in eyes of others and if so I need to be in more control of my emotions it may have done some good in that way but it only made me want to mask my true feelings more.

Hey Orian, fellow Aussie with autism here! I have not yet braced myself to watch an episode of this show! I spent the 1st half of my life being used for cheap entertainment if you get my drift! The ABC are nothing but a woke joke these days anyway!

I didn't watch the show, because I m in France, and I don't think it will be allowed to do it. By the way, I don't watch that kind of thing. Last year, they wanted to make a French reality show for obese people who want to cure. After one show on TV, it was canceled because of the protestations of the obsese community, so I m watching that kind of show on RU-vid, from USA UK Australia... No choice... Thanks for the review, if I can watch one time this show, I will do it, regardless of what you said ❤

I think that you are right that the show should be called a reality TV show. I think that the autistic community was already divided before the TV show though.

Some of the music used sounds almost EXACTLY like the music in a cutesy “in the life of a zoo” set of chronical-style documentaries from the bbc (I think the bbc, could be wrong.) the music was used for mating attempts (often failing for whatever reason) with various species, and clumsy newborns, I heard that music on THIS documentary when they were showing someone fumbling, and zooming in on other patrons of the restaurant, and I instantly got a HUGE ick.

So at the beginning you said, that you can't understand why people would like to watch you doing an video unmasked (which makes sense, that you are confused about it conaidering the origin of authistic people masking). However, I'd like to present my reason for why I clicked onto this video. I, aswell as my former therapist, believe that I might be autistic. However, as my psychiatrist just didn't give a fck bout is job I am undiagnosed. As such I am unsure about my identity but still relate a lot to autism / autisitc people. Seeing you unmasked for me was a way to compare myself to another autistic being to find out if I am more okay with identifying myself as one. Also, while watching (I'm just at 10min now but felt like I uad to write down my thoughts) I noticed you where jumping a lot between different thought processes (a behaviour that is well observable with me). Is that a common thing for autistic people?

I'm a little late to the party, but here's my take: I only recently heard about the show. I watched the first 5 minutes or so of the US version and then turned it off. I can't speak for the rest of the show, but the first person they introduced, although high functioning, was *clearly* not "normal". You could tell before she even interacted with anyone... My problem with this as an Autistic person myself is that, right out of the gate, it suggests all Autistic people are always so different in their interactions that you can just tell... I'm NOT that way. If you just met me on the street one day and we talked, at most you might think I'm reserved or introverted or something. You wouldn't know I was on the Spectrum unless I told you. I even had an extended conversation recently on Reddit with someone recently who, come to find out, was a behavioral specialist with a brother on the spectrum... You know how/when I found that out? AFTER I revealed I was on the spectrum; she had no idea!

These unmasking videos have been profound for noticing my true self. Dating shows are made for entertaining; however, the initial idea of a dating show for people with ASD seems like circus entertainment to covertly make fun.. If it was truly genuine, the show would’ve honoured the participates and met their accommodations 🤷🏼‍♀️

i haven't seen the show but it sounds like it's all about money. i'm unofficially diagnosed with autism but seeking an official diagnosis in the near future however even from the small amount that i've learned about autism so far including needing to confront my own prejudices and biases from childhood, i think that ppl don't understand that autism doesn't have to accompany intellectual disability...there's maybe an expectation that we are unable to be mature or be an actual adult. as a matter of fact, if i get an official diagnosis, one of the things i wonder about is whether i would tell anyone at work bc i worry that it may then become a reason for them to disregard me in some way. and even if there are laws against doing so, ppl can always lie

There a show, I think ti was called bind date in 1985, produce by the BBC. I remember that show had that same format. Two things about the. This Marg, she likes long walks on beach and red roses. Just typical people in show. So seem like that they are using the same format for this show. This in my opinion made more sense for blind dates where 3 people were behind screens. Need something to go on so a couple like or dislikes make sense there. I have watched the show but if this to introduce to people to the viewers, that's not good.
