This is the best explaination of a shower pan build I've seen so far. I've been at this since 1985. You must pitch the bladder in order for the pan to function properly. THAT PAN WILL LAST FOREVER GOOD JOB

Nice to see a shower curb correctly installed. Felt membrane around shower is way we did installations for decades with mortar installs. I usually put the felt up after the pan & let it overlap the PVC pan at least 2". My other suggestion is to install the backer board slightly above the mortar in the pan, this avoids any opportunity for water to wick up the wall. Fire destroys a house in minutes water does it in months or years, sending the water to the drain that's the continuous battle :-)

Simply the most informative how to video for a shower install on youtube(trust me ive watched them all). There is no advertising, and its explained very well. I also love the fact that there is no part 1 and part 2. Very good job

Perfect installation. We've been installing showers this way for years with no problems at all. I see some contractors putting the liner right on the flat floor then put in their mud bed, they look at me like I have two heads when I tell them their doing it wrong and I explain the right way. Hopefully more guys will see this video and learn the right way of doing a shower.

Guys like this are worth their weight in gold. This is the kind of job where you don't want a hack; too much as stake in getting it right the first time. I'm getting this done soon and I took notes so I know what to look for when I'm watching over the work. I don't like to hover over craftsmen, but in this case I might have to. I guess discussing the procedure in advance might limit misunderstandings. If you can't D-I-Y, next best is to know HOW it's supposed to be done. Thanks for an excellent video.

Mark, I appreciate very much that you went out of your way to create this "how to" video on building a shower pan. Frankly, I didn't know anything about building one and you showed me everything that I needed to know in 5 minutes here. The shower pan has been completed using your step by step video and it looks great. Thank you again!

This was a really good demo, I have built these shower pans as a union tile setter for over 30 years exactly like this. The only thing that I would add is if a homeowner is doing a first pan, water test it. Just a little peace of mind. great job.

Excelent video! Very well explained and methodically presented. One thing I always try to read also, is the person, for the work will be a reflection of the person behind it. You are not only knowledgeable, but also come across as neat, organized, meticulous and fastidious. Rare breed! So far, the best and most complete and detailed explanation I have come across. Congratulations and thanks a million! You have answered many questions I had and others I did not even knew to ask.

Very nice concise video. It can't be stressed enough to stabilize your floor base area where live movement occurs with heavy bodies moving around showering. If you take your floor out all the way to the joist system, bridging between your joists ties them together in a way to eliminate sideways shifting of your floor system & stabilizes this area into a "single block" per se'. Doubling your subflooring with construction adhesive between layers adds even more stability eliminating the dreaded shifting/bounce which creates eventual cracking of surface tiles. This video, although brief shows the importance of small detail (such as the base blocking inside your walls & vertical outside runs for nailers) which results in extending the lifetime of the finished project. You don't have to be a pro & have yrs. of experience to do a project with worthwhile results. You just need to spend a few extra hours, stand back from your project at intervals & ask yourself,, "what one more step can I do to do this better & add that extra touch. Try to actually understand the concept of what you're doing with importance to added detail. It's like insurance..

You can tile the ceiling or you can simply paint it. Just make sure to tape the seams with an alkaline resitant tape. Glad to hear you purchased the Ebook.

If I remember right I used 2x4s on that project, at least for the walls. In regards to the curb, I stacked 3 2x4s on their flat sides, screwing the lowest level one into the floor joists and then the upper ones into the lower level pieces. I also used 2x6's for blocking around the base of the pan to have a solid flat surface to nail/staple the membrane to.

The 3/4 inch subfloor is the base flooring (regular flooring). I added another 1/2" of plywood flooring over the subfloor (base flooring).

@WegnerClan I normaly just lay the felt paper and lath flat on concrete slabs, and trowel on the mortar. If you'd like, you could use a construciton adhesive (e.g. Liquid Nails) and a brick or two to hold the felt paper and lath in place until the adhesive dries.
@HomeAdditionPlus
@HomeAdditionPlus 12 лет назад
@TheLureConsulting The felt paper provides no structural value. It just prevents moisture wicking away too quickly from the mortar to either the wood or concrete subfloor. By preventing the wicking of moisture the mortar can set up better to create a stronger pan. The lath works to help hold the mortar together and does not necessarily need to be fastened to the subfloor. It just helps to do so so that you can be assured its laying flat and won't poke up through the mortar surface.
@HomeAdditionPlus
@HomeAdditionPlus 12 лет назад
I use liquid nails and 3-1/2 inch corrosion resitant screws. You can also use a 4x4, instead of the 2x4s for a shallower curb.
@HomeAdditionPlus
@HomeAdditionPlus 13 лет назад
@califmonster Yes you need the felt paper and the wire mesh. The felt paper prevents wicking of moisture from wet mortar on to concrete. The wire mesh acts as rebar to strengthen the mortar
@HomeAdditionPlus
@HomeAdditionPlus 13 лет назад
Yes, the felt paper helps to prevent the wicking away of moisture from the wet mortar to the subfloor (wood or concrete). Yes, the metal lath is necessary to add strength to the mortar. Please see my ebook for details at my website.
@HomeAdditionPlus
@HomeAdditionPlus 12 лет назад
@clapperbells The membrane liner is sandwiched in between two mortar layers. The felt paper helps as a moisture barrier and most importantly prevents the wicking away of moisture form the first mortar layer as it cures.
@HomeAdditionPlus
@HomeAdditionPlus 13 лет назад
@Biglurp1 Unfortunately its water under the bridge at this point. The lath is meant to help hold the mortar together better, simliar to rebar. The felt paper is used to prevent the moisture from wicking away too fast during the curing of the mortar. The slower the water evaporates from the mortar the stronger the bond.
@HomeAdditionPlus
@HomeAdditionPlus 12 лет назад
I always put the smooth side up on the lath to mitigate the risk of puncturing the membrane. Yes, if you bend the lath properly. I think your idea runs the risk of puncturing the lath by imbeddinng the curb piece into the final layer of mortar.
@HomeAdditionPlus
@HomeAdditionPlus 12 лет назад
@carmegkin The purpose of the weep holes is to allow any water that gets in under the tiles to have an exit path to the drain. The weep holes are effectively above the liner. You need to make sure that the drain assembly connects into the PVC J-trap under the shower pan. I'm not sure what you mean by installing the drain on top of the concrete. At this point I just go with what you've got.

@HomeAdditionPlus
@HomeAdditionPlus 13 лет назад
@jesseacheson No. Putting lath in the second mortar layer puts the membrane liner at risk of being punctured. Putting lath in the base layer is all that is needed to ensure a rigid mortar base surface that won't crack if there is any type of flexing on the wood subfloor.
@HomeAdditionPlus
@HomeAdditionPlus 12 лет назад
@TheLureConsulting Simply because you can. Thus you don't need to worry about the felt paper moving around while you pour in the mortar. Likewise you don't have to worry about the metal lath sticking up out of the mortar. These will be concerns pouring the mortar onto the concrete slab.

Great job on this video. I'm in the process of looking for somebody to put in a mortar shower pan for me. Having a problem finding someone to do it the way I want it done. The way I want it done is exactly how you did it. All the butcher tile guys I've talked to about it don't seem to know the proper way to do the job. You would be surprised on how many of them tell me a pre slope is unnecessary or tell me that penitrating the liner is fine. As soon as hear stuff like that I say thank you and continue my search. I wish you worked in my area.

@Alltiletube No, I've never experienced curb swelling or shrinking due to temperature variation. The temperature in most house varies from 65 degrees to 75 degrees, at least where I live. Possibly the small temperature spread is why I have not seen this issue ever.
@HomeAdditionPlus
@HomeAdditionPlus 12 лет назад
@carmegkin Mortar is made from water, cement and sand, whereas concrete is made from water, cement, sand and chipped rock. You use a mortar in the shower pan so that there is no risk of sharp edges on the dried cement mortar bed to cut into the membrane liner. We don't place mesh in the top layer since it could potentiall poke a hole in the membrane liner.

@HomeAdditionPlus

No I did notch the wall studs. The liner is less than 1/8 inch thick (more like 1/16th) and makes no material difference in the finished wall look. If anything, I would suggest using a few shims on the upper portion of the backerboard, but it is really not necessary.
@RowingCox2009
@RowingCox2009 13 лет назад
Rather than use pebbles to prevent concrete from plugging the small drain holes, use a plastic 'scrubbie' such as you would use to clean dishes in the sink. Take a knife and poke a hole in middle, then work it out till it is large enough to fit over the drain pipe. Screw down your drain to the desired height, trim any excess. You will have created in effect, a plastic donut.

You could also use hardiBacker cement board if you're concerned about getting the ceiling wet. However, if the ceiling is high enough above the shower head and there is no risk of water splashing on the ceiling then green board will work just fine.

If you prefer. Its a vapor barrier, however. It is not a material for shedding water down to the liner.

This is an old video now so things might have changed, but I'm curious if you still extend the backer board into the pan. Seems I've seen many videos of failed showers due to water wicking up from the pan through the backer board and compromising the tiles and possibly entering the screw holes into the studs. (leaks, mold, loss of adhesion) I suppose a roll-on membrane might protect the tile side, but if the backer board is damp through the wicking...wouldn't it be just a matter of time before some type of failure? Isn't there a way to suspend the backer board above the mortar bed to prevent this capillary action? Thanks
@HomeAdditionPlus

@jrodmac21 Its not useless. Its prevent mortar from clogging up the weep holes and preventing water to drain out through them in the event of a crack in the tile/grout and final layer of mortar.

You need to maintain the slope on the second layer. Nailing the top of the membrane liner will not be a problem unless the curb is higher than the top of the membrane liner and the shower drain is clogged. No, use the same mud mixture for both layers.

First it is the size of the floor joists that matter more regarding the weight. The larger size they are (e.g. 2x10s or 2x12s) the better. This said I'm less concerned about the floor joists supporting the weight than I am about the deflection in the floor caused by inadequate floor joists or plywood. At a minimum I would add another 1/2 CDX plywood sheet to the base. If you're concerend on floor joists sister additional lumber to them.

Have your thoughts changed or evolved regarding that? Using a topical liquid membrane such as hydro ban as your primary waterproofing membrane? Ive noticed many who at one time used a conventional pan liner now say they no longer used the rubber pan liner as it is redundant and the liquid membranes have advanced so greatly that it is no longer necessary. Your thoughts please?

The weep holes are meant to allow condensation underneath the shower tile floor to drain down the drain. Are you sure the drain you used did not have weep holes already in it? The ones I have always used do. If the drain did have weep holes already in it then all you needed to do was install pea gravel around the weep holes so they wouldn't get clogged by the mortar. At this point I would keep your fingers crossed that you won't have any problems.If you do, you'll need to start over.

My contractor installed basement shower failed after 5 months everything is moldy. I guess I have to remove the drywall and associated tiles so what is the easiest DIY solution? My concern is about doing the curb and the membrane. I have been viewing the guides and I cannot figure out why they are pouring dry pack on top of the concrete floor (shower pan) then repeating the process again over the membrane. Looks like my contractor did not install a membrane. Does water pass through the tile and the grout? Also when you add the dry pack are high around the edges and sloping to the drain ( logical) but why don't you see this slope on the installed tiles. Is there a good guide covering an angled basement shower install? Sincere thanks.
