Today I switch to Pertonix Flame Thrower electronic ignition in a Innocenti Mini Minor Mk II. After the pertronix is installed I replace the coil, cap, rotor and HT leads.

I remember back in the day a friend using a "marigold" glove (a popular brand of rubber gloves used when cleaning dishes or general household cleaning in the UK) instead of the official rubber boot. The five fingers worked well for the king and four cylinder HT leads.

Another excellent video! I've used Pertronix modules in my British cars for years, with 100% reliability. One thing that should maybe be mentioned is that there are different modules for positive and negative ground cars and they are Not interchangeable. If you try to use a negative ground module on a positive ground car (or vice versa) by by flipping the red and black wires, it won't work and will probably blow the module.

Or reverse the polarity of the car, which also means that you can fit an alternator.

You are right and I believe the latest iteration of the Pertronix is more durable and more expensive as well.

If this electronic points conversion had been available in the '70s millions would have been sold. Though, a plastic bag and rubber band was quite effective...

Did this conversion on my 65 Corvair. Ran like crap!!! Heard that the Pert. Mk II didn't work well with a Corvair with Powerglide auto trans. I swapped it for a Mk I....NEVER RAN BETTER!!!

My Petronix ign, Ignitor III, requires to run low resistance (0.6 Ohm) coil (ie their Flame Thrower). I had one flame thrower die on my mini...it was the liquid filled version. I guess maybe it died from excess vibration (it is engine mounted) or perhaps from previous owner mistreatment (see ballast power issue). I replaced it with the epoxy filled version. Also, the EI needs good suppression of radio interference (so run resistance spark plugs (typically 5k Ohm) and even suppression ignition wires. Finally my EI guide doc stated not to run ballast power feed to the coil. Many Mini's had ballasted power to coil for better starting in low temps or low battery charge situation. My car came with the ballast power on the flame thrower coil...might have lead to its ultimate death.

...I think I would have left that nice Lucus coil and wires setup...

Nice Innocenti! Ditto on the Pertronix. I put one in my Midget years ago after dealing with some bad condensers, and it’s been flawless ever since.

Pertronix is expensive but there are other affordable good options in the market

Advisable to use blue loc-tite on all mounting screws. They can vibrate loose causing the car to run like crap. It can drive you crazy trying to find the problem! Ask me how I know!🙄

Same here. That little screw holding the module to the base can come loose and the car starts running bad, backfiring all over the place. Total nightmare.

Some models came with plastic shield front of distributor. Mounted between bonnet latch and left oil cooler hose.

Like @strokenumber3 says, if these had been available in the day they'd have sold millions of them; I often found myself trying to help a Mini/1100/etc owner who'd run through a puddle and drowned all the sparks!

I never had any problems with the Rubber Boot (Even is heavy storms). But I do agree the "Electronic Ignition" is far superior because they hold their tune better and don't need replacing like Points etc.. Thanks Steve, cheers

The rubber boot works but you spend more time taking the boot on and off when you want to adjust something than you spend actually adjusting it.

@@ThisWeekWithCars steve most ignition problems occur in the high tension side in wet conditions so the rubber boot helps that and with you fitting the petronics you should never have to worry about removing it .in the uk we fitted a plastic sheild to stop the water splashing the distributer and coil, lovely example of a mk 1 mini.

I think that's a good conversion for a classic car especially as the distributor is right on the front of a Mini engine. It is a good idea to change the coil as well it should improve the performance of the car and quite an easy job. Thanks Steve interesting video. 👍 👍

A question about the oil cooler. When you change the oil, isn't there old oil in the cooler that doesn't drain out? Could the oil cooler be mounted upside down? Cool timing light.
@ThisWeekWithCars
@ThisWeekWithCars 2 года назад
There is no reason to get all of the oil out unless you had a catastrophic failure and have metal shavings in the entire oil system.

I did the same job using Mallory gear a few months ago on my Land Rover series 3 V8. As it is ex-military it also had the added complication of stepping down 24v to 12v. I made a video to help others out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SaY_JUbokqk.html

Steve, that's not going to fix the problem of rain getting in the distributor. British Leyland put a plastic moulded cover between the distributor and the inside of the grill, protecting it from the rain. The problem was the heat from the engine would evaporate the rain and it then condensed in the distributor cap, causing the spark to short, causing the engine to eventually stop.
