Climbing flexibility is ofter overlooked in our training for climbing. This week, I climbed with climbing flexibility coach - and all-round bendy person - Fran.
Follow Fran: flexibilitywith...
We put our strengths and weaknesses to the test at The Climbing Hangar in Sheffield, and Fran shares her top hacks for instantly improving your mobility while climbing.
Fran helped to unlock my flexibility with a series of quick drills and training tips, and showed us how flexible you can become in the long-term with the right training plans and mindset.
In our climbing session, Fran provided quick-wins for improving your mobility, but in a separate video, she will also share a short mobility warm-up and training routine that will help build long-term improvements in flexibility and mobility.

Thank you so much for all the videos you create and post! As someone new to climbing in the past 4.5 months, and older (44), I have found so many helpful tips and strategies that have enabled me to progress on routes I probably wouldn’t have tried on my own otherwise. I will definitely be adding more flexibility drills to my stretching routine and will likely start telling myself to ‘breathe’ alongside remembering ‘fit, hips, hands’ each time I’m in a scary spot on the wall:) I always look forward to your next video as they never fail to teach me something new (and in a practical, implementable way). Thank you!

Super cool video Hannah, you two were killing it on that pink overhanging boulder! That one looked like a really fun challenge. I am for sure gonna be using that breathing tip in the future as well. Also that red slab with the press up into a stand, now that looked fun but after that I also have no idea how you were meant to progress. Another stretch I use to help with the high knee is the Pike stretch, really stretches out your quads!

Love this video! I would be curious to hear some tips on being a shorter climber (I am 4’11’ with a -1 ape index), and how to gain more traction with strength flexibility. I find that lots of moves, while I am able to get my foot up high (sometimes the closest foothold is up to my chest or shoulder), it’s then difficult for me to put enough power onto that foot to stand up fully on it because of how high it is, so I end up missing a few inches of reach. I’m also a very static climber, so maybe learning how to be more dynamic on insecure footholds (slab is my love language) would be helpful.

Cool tips, but Fran's climbing was over-static. Finding techy flexy solutions can help sometimes, but it usually just wastes a lot of energy where a slightly more dynamic move could do the job. It's especially important that short climbers who struggle with reach consider the dynamic option.

Love the concept of the video, but the execution isn't very useful. Mostly the second half is people falling off moves and often not even the move supposedly the flexibility-related focus of the problem. I think it would be better to demo by doing a single move like that on an easier problem and where you have already established Fran can actually reach. Then more time could be spent on discussing technique. As it is I think 3/4 of the video run time is not about the supposed topic at all. I'm confident Fran has tons of useful stuff to say and demo, but IMO you're not giving her enough chance to do that.

Between academia and law I have received a ton of criticism of my work, some of which was a great deal less constructive than what I posted.
