Insulin Resistance What I Eat In a Day - Can I Bring Down a High Fasting Blood Sugar?

I woke up one morning to a 116 mg/dL fasting blood sugar! How to bring down a high fasting blood sugar was the one and only thing on my mind for the rest of the day. I'll show you what I ate after my momentary freak out to address my high fasting blood sugar.
A little bit about my blood sugar journey... I was told I was insulin resistant in 2017 after a glucose tolerance test my reproductive endocrinologist ordered for me when I was having trouble getting pregnant. And after conceiving, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes very early on. Since then, I've been diligently learning about blood sugar dysregulation and gathering data through constant finger pricks and CGM experiments since I am now at greater risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes in the future. I've learned A LOT about what works and doesn't work for my body, and how my body responds to different foods. I hope this video helps you on your path to a healthier lifestyle!

Look into Dr. Jason Fung and his lectures about fasting/controlled eating windows. Mixing in some intermittent fasting can improve insulin sensitivity. I'm currently on an 8 hour eating window that works for me (12pm-8pm, two meals occasionally a snack in between). I'm planning on doing a 24 hour fast 1x a week (Saturday or Sunday). As a type 2 diabetic (who isn't obese, not even close) who got diagnosed at age 30, I've switched to a whole foods low-carb diet and avoid ANYTHING that has refined carbs, added sugars, or is processed.
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama 10 месяцев назад
I've read Dr. Fung's books and am familiar with intermittent fasting. I sort of "inadvertently" intermittently fast on many days, as I eat dinner usually early (finish by 6pm) and don't eat breakfast until 9am but didn't find it to be very helpful for me. I may have to give it a try again. Sounds like you're doing a great job of controlling your diabetes! 💪

@@thegoodenoughmama Have you tried working up to more extended fasts such as 24 hours...36...48 hours? If you ever do experiment with such be sure to keep track of blood glucose and ketone levels and make sure you are adding salt to some of your glasses of water (or look into the fast-friendly aka o calorie/0 sugar electrolyte powders that have sodium, potassium, and magnesium). You can drink black coffee and some teas (green tea is good) during the fast as well. GL on your diabetic journey regardless of what you do! I was diag type 2 diabetes at age 30 despite never being obese (throughout my adult life of drifted between 150-175 lbs at 5ft8 height). Unfortunate genetics and poor eating habits (too much processed foods, added sugars and not enough fiber and omega three fatty acids).

I have been watching several of your videos for the past 2 days and I must say you have a great attitude towards controlling and balancing blood sugar and food life. I am not diabetic, but because it runs in the family , I am 62, btw, I have started to eat like a diabetic somewhat. I have adopted the same principles of balance and NOT excluding certain food groups in my diet. I walk 1 hour every single day, eat twice per day and lowered my carbs intake by 60%, with moderate protein and some fats. This works well for me and I do not feel deprived. I but I do not eat processed foods and I have cut back on sugars at about 95%. In the last month I have become a little more mindful of my carb intake, so I have completely been off sugar for the last month except now and then in my tea, just 1 tsp. I drink tea once a day, sometime I don't. I have water, but tea most mornings.I love rice, it's part of my food culture, and I am not going to give up on rice. I eat diabetic friendly rice ( so they say) with low GI. These days I forget that I am NOT diabetic, lol. I am feeling good, The odd dayI feel to get some sugary snack I will!

Hello, I know it’s been a while since you posted this but I just want to say how happy I am that I found your channel. My story is soooo very close to yours. For years and years I had symptoms of numbness in my hands and fingers, exhaustion, brain fog, etc. and saw many doctors and specialists; not ONE of them mentioned the possibility of being pre-diabetic or insulin-resistant as the cause. I can sense your frustration in not being able to eat what you want without worrying about it and I feel the same way. Like you, I am slim, I work out 5 days a week and eat healthy.. but being insulin-resistant (and formerly pre-diabetic. I got out of pre-diabetic range through eating keto but like you, that wasn’t sustainable for me) some things really spike my blood sugar out of control and then affect my fasting blood sugar the next morning. Last night I ate a medium sized sweet potato stuffed with 2 tablespoons of black beans, AFTER eating some chicken. I love sweet potatoes and hadn’t had one in 3 years. I was hoping I could incorporate them back into my diet… but NOPE.. I started at 92 and after an hour my blood sugar was 145 😢 ! Then this morning, my fasting blood sugar was an alarming 122!! I felt so defeated and it is just so hard to not be able to eat “normally” like my husband does. Also, I LOVE citrus fruits and crave them a lot, but even half an orange spikes my blood sugar so high. It’s not easy trying to find that balance! Thanks again for your videos!

Thank you so much for sharing part of your journey! This is truly a frustrating condition. I love sweet potato too but it spiked my blood sugar once into the 160's after I ate just 1/4 of it. Sounds like we're both trying to find where that "in moderation" balance is! Good luck with everything!

I can relate to your frustration. Why us, right? I love SP too. Another channel said that coating SP with cottage cheese, full fat Greek yogurt, or butter will lessen the spike. Or sprinkle some cinnamon over the SP also. I don't like cottage cheese though. Another suggestion is to eat greens first to coat the stomach. I've been eating "greens" before my meals. May God help us all through this journey!

don’t let the number rule your life. if u are in diet of low carb and intermittent fasting, like OMAD, u are in good shape. though i have daily workout of 8 - 10 km running, OMAD and low carb diet, my fasting b sugar often at the levels of 105 - 108. no high blood pressure, nor edema, my body is in good shape. keep yourself happy!

I think numbers more than 100 is a warning sign of your body. Your pancrease works with overload. Avoid food that spike glucose level, white flour, sugar, sweet drinks...dont relax bc this is still not a diabet. Your body shows you eat a lot of high glycemic food.

The other day I also had a BS fasting of 116 , but I have found a method that really will help in my efforts. Ive had premium psyllium husks in in my cubbord for a while but had not been using it. Anyway I drank an 8 oz glass of water with the husks maybe an hour before eating a low carb meal. I only the 2 hr mark but was impressed to see a 91 mg/dl . I hadnt had a reading like that for a while. Although my last 3 mo lab results came back with 98 BS and 5.9 A!C. I was a bit unhappy with the 5.9 and expected it to be lower. So I have work to do but will be using pyllium husks from now on. A 91 reading is not the norm for me but would like for it to be.

I’ve been doing LC and IF for the past 6 months. Lost about 60lbs (hit a plateau recently but I think I’m back on track). I mixed in some longer fasts (24, 36, 48, 72) and measured my blood glucose in the morning and before and after meals. I generally am in the 80s-90s but noticed some days my morning reading was like 110-120(!) even after a 24 hr fast. I’m aware of the dawn effect but these data points seemed extreme. After looking deeper at these weird data points, I noticed 3 of 4 of these instances came in the week before my period started and 1 of the 4 came when I was super stressed with life/work. So I think it was a mix of high cortisol (stress), lady hormones (normal cycles), and poor sleep. Thanks for sharing this video because I could only find very little information on high fasting glucose and its good to see others experiences. Dr Mindy has some videos on high fasting glucose that I found helpful too.

@@thegoodenoughmama Thanks to your videos for inspiring me - letting me know that we have the power to do something about BG. I think each body is different and we need to test out for ourselves to figure out what works for us. I do agree with you that Keto is not scalable (at least not for me and my wife). There were far too many side effects for us - like the anxiety thing, which was very real and very deliberating (and no one would acknowledge that its real, as if we're the outliers). Then there's the issue with glucogenesis keeping the blood sugar hovering around high 90s during the day. We've been monitoring our blood sugar after getting off keto (which wasn't easy to do as the body kept going back to it) and it's more predictable now. Walking helps lower it and even though anerobic exercise increases it during the workout, it lowers it for rest of day. We're seeing 2 spikes when we eat (we're told that it's a good thing) , which is interesting, but the spikes are lot quicker and no more than 20 points higher each time and it's within hour of eating.
@amike28

Hi, I’m excited to find your channel. I’m another normal weight pre diabetic. 122 lbs. I have the most difficulty with hypoglycemia after eating in the morning. I’m also mostly Whole Food Plant Based, after many trials and errors trying different breakfast foods, I find I can eat tofu and veggies in the morning without a hypoglycemic reaction. Mostly I use frozen green beans and some frozen mixed vegetables. Steamed in my microwave steamer. I put a little balsamic vinegar on it because I’m avoiding salt. I have to go on my physical reactions because I don’t have a blood sugar monitor. I’m older than you at 68 years old, and have high triglycerides and cholesterol and borderline high blood pressure. I find a WFPB diet helps me stay slimmer and keeps my A1C about 5.4. I would love to see you do more WFPB meals, tofu and beans as your protein sources and lots of veggies and see how your blood sugar reacts.

Not sure if it's this, but blood sugar is usually higher in the morning because our body produces cortisol and other hormones in the early morning hrs, which signals to our liver to release glucose to give us energy to wake up (dawn phenomenon). It usually lowers ~2 hrs after waking up. Maybe you can try drinking ACV diluted with water before bed to help with it or try exercising/ walking it off after. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Paleo diet is how i reversed my pre diabetes and high blood pressure. 57 male. Whole foods Meat, fish, eggs and low glycemic vegetables like broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, onions, peppers, cucumbers fruit like avocados, olives, tomatoes, strawberries. Additionally mushrooms Initially i was extremely high fat heavy cream in my coffee, lots of cheese, rib eyes, bacon, sausage I did a diet with almost exclusively those ingredients daily used stevia as a sweetner in my coffee and avoided sugar like a plague relying on only the starch/sugar i would get from the low glycemic vegetables and strawberries but seldom did i even eat strawberries. The goal is to deplete your glycogen stores in your muscles and rely on your liver to turn protein into glucose as needed. It takes about a week to ten days of hell to get to this point but once you do you will adjust and adapt. You will see about 6-10 lbs of weight loss that first week then your body will go into fat burning over drive and you will litterally see the fat burning off your body over night. In three months i lost 40 lbs and now 2 years later im still maintaining that weight. My blood sugar typically stays around 92 fasting and between meals and usually stays below 145 after eating. I brought back root vegetables like beets but not potatoes or grain and i reduced my fat intake and upped my vegetable intake. Only time i eat high glycemic fruit is after a moderate workout at the gym. You have got to eliminate all that processed high glycemic garbage you are eating like preserves and lots of fruit and learn to adapt to a whole food low glycemic diet without foods made from grain and high starch so things like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes are problematic for most people and the absolutely worst things you can eat are high glycemic high fat like chips, french fries, pastries, deserts. If you want to fix it you have to change to a whole food diet. Last you need to include exercise minimim of 45 minutes 4 days a week. Walking is ok but with diabetes you will see the greatest benefit with intervals like walking with short runs i myself do 3 miles of walking and running together with 10 pushups between the walk/run interval. I also go to the gym snd do moderate high heart rate circuit training of various combinations of push, pull, core and legs for 1 hour.

I've started a Carnivore Diet coupled with Alternate Day (36 hour) Fasting to bring my blood sugar/insulin down. If I eat too much sugar (falling off wagon) the night before I too experience a higher reading. Often take Berberine. By the way Almonds are VERY high in oxalates. If you have been eating a lot of them and stop you will get a oxalate dump. (very unpleasant experience) Been there done that with cashews.

There's so many ways to cook without a kitchen; I can't imagine ordering out so much (though in some ways it does sound nice to not be cooking and cleaning etc LOL). So many things affect fasting glucose, it can be frustrating. Was the poor sleep because of high bg, or is the high bg because of poor sleep; dawn phenomenon; stress; whatever was eaten before bed.... If you have a high morning fasting bg, do you delay eating? I usually fast until at least 1pm (depends if I'm working), but then sometimes my number is still high--I think maybe because my liver is making glucose. At least, I hope so! :)

@thegoodenoughmama 11 дней назад
Yes, eating out so much definitely had its pros and A LOT of cons. I don't intentionally fast in the mornings but it's kind of naturally built into my routine. Our family eats an early dinner around 5/5:30pm and I don't eat breakfast until I get back home from taking my kids to school, which is around 8:30am. So around 15 hours daily. But if I catch do catch a high fasting, then I do delay eating a bit more but thankfully right now it doesn't happen too often.

Lena, I noticed that in general for your testings, you have the first test after 1hour. However some food are supposed to give a larger peak earlier than that. For example, I would think in your banana test (the big, rippen banana test !) the glucose level would have been much higher after 30 minutes only, rather than 1 hour. I would like to know if there is a fundamental reason why you're starting at 1 hour ? I am new to this and trying to understand how all this works. Your videos are very helpful. Cheers.

Just to illustrate my point, I eventually went buying a glucose monitor yesterday. Ate an avocado and an apple (without the skin) and tested myself after 1/2h, and 1h. The results were 133mg/dl and 105mg/dl respectively. In other words, I would have missed the spike if I had tested only at the 1h mark.

I've often checked my blood sugar at 30 minutes and I don't think I've ever seen that number be higher than my 1 hour. I think everyone's body is different but checking at 30 minutes never provided me with much useful information. Also when I had gestational diabetes, I was told to check at 1 hour and/or 2 hours, so that is just what I am used to. It sounds like checking at 30 minutes is useful for you so I'd keep doing that! I am from India. One of the doctor here who got famous for helping people with weight loss and controlling blood glucose suggests eating only two meals in a day. No snacking. You can have breakfast and lunch or breakfast and dinner or lunch and dinner, just two meals. He performed lot of tests on himself. His findings suggest that amount of insulin secreted in body is same irrespective of the amount of food you eat. You eat one bagel or have a full buffet. Just find out two time instances when you feel hungry and stick to it. Obviously you should not eat too much of carbs and sugar but he doesn't suggest any specific limits as such. Plus you should walk for 45 minutes, brisk walk.

I just found your videos and they are very helpful! I am 19 and just diagnosed for prediabetes which was devastating to me because I was living a pretty healthy lifestyle (minus having exercise). I am also around your build but with no muscle so I found it shocking that I was diagnosed with prediabetes because I ate pretty healthy and have no weight to lose. I have just started my journey now so I don't know what works well or not with me yet. I have been moving/exercising more and avoiding processed foods/carbs. I was wondering what you think about reversing insulin resistance? From my research, it looks like diabetes and prediabetes can be reversed but insulin resistance depends on the person. I think you talk about insulin resistance like it is permanent but from my research online they say it is reversible. I would like your opinion, can you heal insulin resistance? Like, can you reverse insulin resistance to the point where your blood is normal and healthy and can intake insulin normally? Thank you for your videos they are very helpful.

Hi, thank you for sharing part of your story! My personal opinion is that no metabolic dysfunction is reversible. It is manageable and I can definitely get back into a healthy range, but I can't ever go back to just eating whatever I want. And that's ok! May be your “moderation” isn’t going to cut it with all that processed foods. Like me, you need to cut all carbs and sugars, fruits for two months to give your insulin a rest. Carbs make you crave more carbs. Hard to be satiated because your body is lacking in essential amino acids. Makes you think of foods all day long. Then you feel stressed. Stress induces elevated cortisol and you can become insulin resistant. 😢 When I was diagnosed with pre diabetes two months ago. I found dr Jason Fung and Ekberg immediately to understand my own body. I’m considered as TOFI. Thin outside fat inside. My 18 on bmi scale is underweight? But I’m fat inside? I know, it was a life time eating WFPB diet, I thought healthy but I was actually deficient in a lot of animal protein amino acids. So I quit carbs, changed my diet to a small portion of meat or fish or two eggs with some greens. I learned to make my own organic bone broth with celery, leeks and onions in pressure cooker plus I also found out how to make plain Greek yoghurt. The best thing is I got my husband in the same mode. He is liking my bone broth soup to sip for his achy joints. My fasting blood glucose is now averaging between 76 and 83. I do sprinting on the bike three times and work in the garden daily. By the way I’m 62 year old. I know you can continue your moderation after quitting carbs like me. 👍

It can or it can stick around. Actually, women with gestational diabetes have a 50% higher chance of developing type 2 diabetes within the next 5 years after birth. Scary statistic.
