As a dad in the military, it’s really hard to break into the hobby. I’ve bought a starter box and painted some dudes, but it’ll be a while since I’ll be able to see my guys on the tabletop. Love your videos. I always come back to them.
2020 UPDATE - Malign Sorcery is no longer supported for all the realm artefacts/rules, and that's all in the GHB now so you end up needing one less book.
Hi, a friend of mine always doubts that the new rules completely block Malign Sorcerys extra spells and we ended up discussing this topic quite a bit. Could you point me to a text passage, that rules that confirms, that one can't use the extra Realm Spells from Malign sorcery? Thanks in advance.
pg102 GHB2020, specifically "On pages 102-107, you will find Realm of Battle rules for each of the Mortal Realms to be used in a matched play game." GHB rules only, in other words.
Loved it. I have been looking for a concise but clear video explaining AoS. I'm getting ready to get back into Warhammer 40k after a decade away, and I've been eyeballing AoS a ton as I am getting all the supplies together and army picking. Fantastic job, I had to stop midway to tweet this out since I was so happy to finally find a video that introduces the game so well.
The game sounds vastly improved since launch, and the community at large sounds nothing like the horde of Those Guys all competing to be the one That Guy to rule them all that it was when I played all those years ago. I just wanted to have fun and learn the game, but my "teachers" took pleasure in stomping new players as hard as they could while making up or wildly misinterpreting rules to give themselves the greatest advantage; after all, how could the new kid possibly know that you can't march backwards to avoid being hit by the Casket of Souls? The new kid doesn't even own his opponent's army book, how does he know that you don't get to summon Blood Knights with the Raise Dead spell? Besides, winning at any cost is the most important part of the hobby! :/ Kinda funny though, I was just as pissed as Those Guys when G Dubs murdered WFB and replaced it with a mocking abomination. I loved the idea of the rank and flank style of gameplay, with massive armies on movement trays fiddling about with convoluted rules that needed to be looked up twice every phase... something about it being so inconvenient to do such a basic thing as moving an inch to the left to avoid having to move up a hill filled my heart with glee. I absolutely loved the game, to the point where I would play mock battles on graph paper while I dreamed of the models I would buy on my summer job income of $50 per week... Ended up going with Tomb Kings, because I'm a massive sucker for anything themed Ancient Egyptian. .....Anyway, when I saw the new High Elf army box with the fancy dice, tokens, and HOLY SHIT A SUIT OF HAUNTED ARMOR FOR A GENERAL I knew what army I wanted to collect. By the time I looked into the preview articles on how they played and what other models were on the horizon, I had already received the shipping confirmation. Been watching a few battle reports, and from what I can tell it's basically "40K without reliable shooting". While a turn 1 charge seems ludicrous and frankly stupid in 40K, somehow it seems like a completely normal thing to account for in AoS; must be the setting.
i started in 40k, and i helped a lot of 40k players around here, and i prefer to have a epic duel, losing the battle but winning the epic duel, than winning the battle with a novice just to feel better. i want to try age of sigmar for over 2 years, but the way gw handled the dwarfs, not the overlords or the fyreslayers, the dworfs makes me want to try harder to convice my club to play fantasy.
Man you are great! I look forward to this series. I enjoy your humor and knowledge on the topic. I recommend you include a couple typical tournament lists for each faction and recommend how to play them and against them.
Idk why all the initial hate on fantasy players that keep playing, the game is not dead, it is just not supported and updated by the creators. And the existence of one doesnt make the other worse. You can enjoy playing cities of sigmar and fantasy, or maybe not. But lets not throw shit from one side to the other, at the end of the day we just want to have fun playing with little figures on a table
It has nothing to do with fantasy players who kept playing. They're fine, same as anyone playing any other game. It's an explanation of the history, and I'm throwing shade at the toxic ones who stopped playing whfb and also don't play AoS but spent years shitting on AoS and its community because they're mad about GW retiring fantasy. 5 years later and I still get 'age of shitmar' and 'fantasy was better' in youtube comments, so I put that part in the video to prepare new players for the toxicity that they may experience from time to time. It's overwhelmingly one-sided, generally, and the only hate from the AoS community at whfb is being fed up with years of their shit.
@@HeyWoah As someone with a foot in both communities (but probably more AoS, nowadays), I can say that "grave dancing" (i.e. "lol, your game died, because it sucked lololol") trolls have been a thing since the big changeover happened. Also, by your own admission, the beginning of AoS was a Non Man's Sky-esque shitshow, so the initial WHFB reaction needs to be viewed with that in mind. Back then, a game had been ended and replaced with, basically, nothing. We had no crystal ball to know that GW would be all hand's on deck to sort the new game out, rather than just letting it die on the vine. Well done to GW for choosing the former, though.
1. Yes, there's a base size chart for what to use currently. Might not seem like it, but base size affects gameplay greatly, and so should always be followed. 2. Right, active player gets to choose a unit to fight first, then it's YGIG till activations are done. 3. Right, you can only shoot on your turn. 4. Right, shooting/magic armies get more bang for their buck from double turns, generally (but are punished harder when it happens to them). However, do note that the real power of a double is being able to score again.
@@HeyWoah Thank you kindly for the fast response, you are the best! Sad to hear that my army is technically illegal but I can deal with that, and I can always fix it in the future - I appreciate the heads up. The last point was especially fascinating since I wasn't even thinking about how it would effect point scoring, I can see exactly how powerful it is now! I'm really glad you answered my questions thoroughly, it helped a lot.
Watched this two/three times. Great content. Still don’t own anything yet but I’m eager to get some stuff, (mainly to learn painting as I can’t find any AoS groups around London England)
Painting is great, it's just a little slow to collect and setup. My big recommendation that everyone says but many don't listen. Go really small. Like just work on a unit or if bulk start collecting. I picked the right army being Nurgle lol but I got a bunch of stuff over time and collected over hobby. Well looking at the stuff it's overwhelming 😬. Currently batch painting 2x start collecting Nurgle Daemons and love the scheme and techniques bhut can't help about all the things I need to paint and it can be a easy mental excuse to not paint and do something easier 🤣. Anyways, it's a great hobby, my recommendation is go small first though 👍
I miss Bretonnia. I wish they'd sell some of their old models to mix in with the Cities of Sigmar. Perhaps with the Lady herself as their God/Leader. They'd add some more variety and perhaps bring back a lot of medieval fantasy fans into the fold. Still, I'm building a army for AoS nonetheless. But I sure as hel would buy a second army if Bretonnia were to come back...
Is that a gamer word now? If so I'll need to un-check content for kids or re-upload or something. It takes a tremendous effort for me not to swear in these new player videos
No, I get it. It's just that you're clearly a decent sort of chap, unaware that you're the only such to use that term. (Gah, English. It's a term used by the man-child brigades of the Internet to exclude and ridicule the already excluded and ridiculed. I'm trying to say that I'm of the opinion that you're too good a dude for that.) Look, don't sweat it. It'd be cool if you could refrain in future, that's all. I'm proper hyped about the planned content! Cheers.
twas a really great video that clearly showed what AOS is all about, I still have no interest at all in swtiching from fantasy to aos but your videos are still great to watch!
Ok so you say that the forced death of WHFB got rid of the grog spergs. Well you're wrong. In fact, it made it worse since the wannabe spergs who couldn't afford Fantasy now have a good excuse to get into AoS and ruin the fun plus you get the old grogs who are now returning because of CoS. Also, see the competitive scene, most of people that follow this path to darkness will end up in "that guy" territory. Idk but upon close observation AoS is fun in private well established groups or LGS communities that actively weed out the grogs.
This was a historical timeline, but as gamers know, the grogs always come crawling back. That being said, the tournament scene I've been to has been shockingly friendly and inclusive. It's blown my mind as a former mtg grinder - 4 years of big AoS tournaments and I've met all of like 3 toxic players. Maybe I'm lucky, maybe it's the midwest, maybe it's because I stick to AoS-only events that don't have a 40k contingent, idk
How many confirmed cases of burning a WHFB army are there? I always thought it was literally just one guy (Dark Elves?), and the WHFB Grave Dancing crowd somehow managed to make it seem like it was happening a lot, and thus give the impression that the majority of WHFB players are unhinged. It's just like politics. Take the absolute worst and more extreme of the "other side", and then try and cinvince people that they are typical of the "other side".
The subject of that section was focused only on "the most toxic ones" and how they quit the game and did not pick up Age of Sigmar. That Guys either left entirely or spent their next 5 years shitting on AoS players online while not playing the game. If I wanted to convince people that they were "typical of the other side" I would have said that, but they aren't, so I did not.
@@HeyWoah Sorry, "lit their armies on fire in angry RU-vid videos" may give the newcomers the impression that this was a somewhat commonplace reaction amongst WHFB players. At the very least, it suggests that it was more than one single nutcase.
Actually, that specific guy wasn't a nutcase - his rant was staged and only partially serious, and the burning was more of a funeral than fury. Still, made for a good throwaway line to paint a picture of the level of anger that came with the transition, especially among the toxic minority.
@@Jackaljkljkl the most toxic spurgs lit their armies on fire and left the scene is what he said. In no way shape or form does that translate to him saying every WHFB player is toxic and most people, including new players, would have heard that and understood what he meant. Honestly you being this reactionary over a throwaway line that was maybe about 10 to 15 seconds of the entire video says more about you than anything.
In his defense, he didn't know they'd pull a no man's sky and actually end up with a better game. Most people just thought everything was ruined forever.
They're awesome, just not proper high elves which is a distinction some people apparently care a lot about. I made fun of the helmets on the one guys but I actually like Lumineth a lot.
@@HeyWoah I think they're great models and definitely fit the AoS fluff. Other than the giant cow, you could not be more High Elfy. Someone mentioned online that the Lumineth seem a bit Slaaneshi. This may be due to the fact the Lumineth drew some of their power from Slaanesh himself while imprisoned.
Rael Why do you think they represent the High Elves well? I get that for the early reveals but I would be interested to hear why for the later (excluding the giant cows which you covered).
I mean the game is not that bad now. And I'm currently playing the game with bertonian supplement rules from Warhammer Legends. But it's understandable that you don't like the game because it did killed the Old World.
