Irritator & Their Wacky Jaws - Spinosaur News

Spinosaurs have continued to get weirder and weirder, year upon year, and this time around, it’s not Spinosaurus itself that’s been making the rounds. Irritator, an animal I covered myself on the channel way back in 2019, is quite the interesting genus as the name implies quite the irritating animal when it was being described. A recently published paper goes over their skulls and their dynamics, noting some particularly interesting flexibility to them. I hope you enjoy.

Thank you for the clarification of the jaw movement. The images I’ve seen of the jaw separating at the tip just … er … no.

Not a prob! Unfortunate how a lot of people misconstrued how they would have appeared. Led to some funny art though.

so we have almost croc-dinosaurs, almost duck dinosaurs and now we have almost pelikan dinosaurs... well.

Are we sure all Spinosaurids have a jaw like this? For example, not all Spinosaurids have a large back sail, wide tail or even similar leg structure like Spinosaurus Aegyptiacus
@JasonBason
@JasonBason Год назад
Most likely not all, but probably ones in the same clade (Spinosaurinae) since Irritator is more closely related to spinosaurus so they'd probably have some of the same fish eating adaptations

This is not the first time this condition has been reported in a spinosaur: Spinosaurus itself was reported to have this condition quite a while ago. However, as Mark Witton pointed out, this condition is found in a very wide array of birds, so it’s not necessarily indicative of ecology.

Why do I feel this isn't even yet the last wild twist to the story of Spinosaurids...

It 100% isn't. There's unpublished stuff I can't talk about here, but I assure you there is absolutely more to come. :)

In this video you sound really tired compared to how you sounded during your NZ Bird of the Week videos. That said, thank you for this interesting video regarding Irritator.

Funny you say that! I was coming out of a cold when I recorded it, and I had stayed up later than usual the night before, so apologies on that front. I hope the content was okay, otherwise. :)

I fully believed that when spinosaurs open their mouths the lower mandibles would split apart before the recent evidence, them also having a pelican throat pouch isnt very surprising.

Really awesome to see Spinosauridae *irritate* more paleoartists lol. There still needs to be a lot of effort put into giving smuggled fossils back to their countries, but the future looks bright.

Imagine after millions of years, some scientists named you Irritator b'cause some fossil dealer stick a fake nose to your Skull.

I'm very skeptical of the "pelicansaurus" interpretation as pelicans have a very derived feeding method quite unlike the Spinosaurs which go for a more "snap at large fish and grip it" style of feeding rather than scooping up fish soup. Perhaps the odd jaw joint is nore to allow more "give" when holding a fish between the teeth? Especially if they were regularly going after several hundred pound fish.

I think it was an opportunistic water hunter That 8 mid sized sometimes larger But not huge Pray like it probably swallow 1 of those big bony fish not just Tiny fish and possibly animals That came near the water to drink I don't think it was fully Aquatic but hunted and lived around the water That's just my opinion
