Are you planning to buy, sell, or hold in 2023? Tell us about it!

I think you nailed it. I've followed the boat market for about 20 years. The last time boats dropped in price was during the housing market crash 2007/8. This winter has been the first winter that since 2020 that dealers have left over stock from the previous season. A few manufacturers have ready added 2 year all inclusive warranties and reduced financing rates (2.5-2.9%). I really appreciate your videos. They are always informative, honest and fun to watch.

I think sales in California will be great because now there is ample water.

I am planning to stick to my 15 footer center console powered by a four stroke 50 HP Yahama UNTIL I win the lottery to buy a BIGGER BOAT LOL... As much as I would LOVE TO BUY a 25 foot or maybe even a 30 foot boat with a cabin that I spend the weekends on it somewhere in the Florida Keys, the MAIN issue is storage and maintenance! It can get REALLY EXPENSIVE, REALLY FAST when you upgrade. I keep mine in my garage, and when I don't use it, I spend zero dollars. I like that part.

Wish this video would have been available in November. I ordered a new boat Dec. 2nd and probably would have waited for the boat show season. I thought 4.9% was a good rate but it sounds like I might have been able to do better now. I'm also seeing rebate offers now.

Hey im curious if you could make a video going into the differences between the 200 HP merc and the 250.. so the V6 vs the V8. i hear from dealers that all youll get is about 5 miles more an hour so its not worth the price difference. But its gotta be more then just 5 miles an hour. The displacement figure between the 2 is 70. So id imagine the hole shot is decently better as well and mid range acceleration is better. Itd be awesome if you could make a video going over these things. Im sure alot of people have the same questions i have on this. Love your videos though! learned a lot from you! Thanks!

Thanks for your fantastic videos! Would you please comment on whether at this point in 2023 you would change your advice on whether late season or fall this year will offer good opportunities for discounts on new boats, in particular on forward drive bowriders or v drive surf boats? I realize this will vary by region to some extent. Also, it would be really interesting to hear your take on forward drive IOs. Thanks!

Good info. I have followed the yachting industry for quite some time and these past 2 months have been very interesting. One major brokerage recently released a list of yachts with new price reductions. This list was was much larger than in the past 5 years. I believe the used market will be the greatest competition to manufactures and dealerships for new boats. In turn, the accessory markets will have the next boom - which is great because that funds R&D for technology advances for boat options. My question for you is if the dealerships believe they will need to ramp up their used brokerage business and or refit business; and how do you all see the trade in market being treated.

Just looking at current boat inventories they all look great! I did have a question though. Why was the tri hull so popular a long time ago and now they hardly exist? What was the reason behind the design?
@jakefromstatefarm9721

In my uninformed opinion. Boats are a luxury item to start. Competition exists between dealers and the mfg but mostly the customers. People always want the newest, latest and greatest. A manufacturer comes out with something new and innovative and people put more time into researching what their neighbor has opposed to what’s best for them and the water they’re in and they tend to make decisions based on what’s in the Jones’s backyard. Eventually they realize works best and they find themselves back into the v-hull or a modified v-hull design. A design that has hundreds of years practical applications. But that’s just my cynical viewpoint.

With an influx of people that’ll want to upgrade or sell (because they don’t have the time anymore), is the dealer the best place to buy used? Or private? Here in Toronto, there isn’t the dealer ‘infrastructure’ to choose from. Cottage country is the place that has that, but some of us don’t own a cottage and only have Lake Ontario to play on. )that said, Lens Cove dealer sound a good,place to check out one day). Thanks.

I think you are way off. Way off. Boats that were 170k 1.5-2yrs ago are 300k this year.

Im seeing similar. $50k used in 2019 - same year / model / condition jumped to $70k used by the summer of 2022. I’m starting to prices trend down / perhaps $60k. As a person who has a boat and “6 foot’itis” we are preparing to move up this fall to a larger used express cruiser circa 2005-2008. In other words, pre-catalyst emission controls. I’ve done this move up before and it takes me about a year and a lot of time to complete everything before we are settled into the next boat and I’ve gone through everything, converted to my preferred electronics, canvas, etc. Said another way, I disagree with the end of this video. Delaying your boat upgrade does not remove a year of boating, it postpones a year of work. Until we find the exact right next for us boat, at a reasonable and fair price point for seller and buyer, we will keep using what we have. I am seeing a lot of used, for sale boats sit month after month. Unlike 2020-2022, it seems in 2023 there are more used boat for sale and less buyers. Oh, as a do-it-yourself routine maintence and minor repairs boat owner with a couple of friends at shops that offer mechanical work, pro-work has shot up in price. How much? Well, an $400 raw water impeller change (parts+labor) in 2019 is $700 today. Many Merc and Volvo motors that were GM blocks, common for decades up til 2009 such as the V6 4.3 and V8 5.0, parts are simply not available. The maintence costs have increased dramatically.
