Autodesk Maya is a very popular 3D software that is used by professionals in many industries like game development, animation and visual effect for feature film and tv shows. If you are interested in this program or 3d in general you might be asking yourself is it easy or hard to learn this stuff? Well, in this video we will try to answer the question by breaking things down so anyone can understand what we are talking about.

Try everything .... don't limit yourself. Try out each software yourself and see which one feels good to use. You will be spending years in it so be careful which you choose as your main tool and remember that no single one will do everything better than the rest :D I use Blender + Zbrush + Substance + many others regularly and have used Maya for years But .... 1) If you want to make games .... learn Blender first as you can hit the ground running much faster. Then later on learn Autodesk for more advanced and niche features which Blender still cannot do or simply will take you more time to do in Blender. You will be surprised how much faster and better Blender is for many tasks. 2) If you want to do VFX for freelance or smaller studios learn Blender or C4D or Houdini or Maya or Max 3) If you want to work in TV/Movies learn Maya or Houdini 4) If you want to work for a games company learn Maya or 3ds Max + Blender 5) If you want to make your own content and have already learned other 3d apps then learn Blender as it is a brilliant supplement to other packages. Almost everyone should learn Zbrush and Substance Painter. Specialising in modelling or animation or lighting or some other part of VFX is smart if you want to find work. Be a master at one thing. If you are a master at many things you will always have work.

I'd be using Maya as my main software if it was accessible. Most commerical software has this rinky-dink free trial license that expires. Instead of operating like Houdini or unreal/unity where they have a infinite non-commercial license for learning and an indie license for freelancers, C4D, Autodesk software, Zbrush, And more have 14 day free trial, or student licenses at "accredited" colleges. The only Verdict is Vengeance...or pirating, which is dangerous and illegal.
@JohnSmith-rn3vl
@JohnSmith-rn3vl 3 года назад
@@James-pb8xu zbrush core is free for non commercial, great for learning. I used maya for 10 years. But after 1.5 year of blender 2.8 i now PREFER blender for most tasks. Blender is still crap with particles and character animation. But its so much better to use in so many other places than Maya. And yes i agree with you. Instead of spending £30 -£400 a month on autodesk I use that on plugins for blender and other software like realflow or embergen.
@James-pb8xu
@James-pb8xu 3 года назад
@@JohnSmith-rn3vl Actually John, I just checked their website and the free version is Zbrush Core _Mini_ whereas Zbrush Core is just less expensive than the full Zbrush. Pixologic is one of the better companies offering a $10/month renting license to Zbrush Core. Also, Zbrush has a perpetual license under $1000 so that's something as well. Autodesk needs to have the indie license for their software on the same page of the softwares themselves. Why am I typing in "Maya indie license"? It should already be on its main page.
@JohnSmith-rn3vl
@JohnSmith-rn3vl 3 года назад
@@James-pb8xu Aaah yes you are right. I am lucky in that I bought zbrush very early on for like $300 around 10 years ago so i don't keep up with the pricing. Because I have NEVER paid for an Zbrush upgrade. Pixologic upgrades for free to this day. They are one of the best companies out there. Autode$k .... not such a great company at all. I am still angry at them for buying Alias Wavefront and running Maya into the ground. Maya had so much potential and after Autode$k bought it the first couple of releases were pretty sweet but then it all just slowed down as the Maya developers left the company. And now look at the 2020 software. What's new and interesting? Nothing really interesting or ground breaking, its been like that for 4 years, Maya developers just do enough to keep the lights on in the house, but no ones home.

Maya hands down for animation, but I'm also impressed with a lot of the stuff Blender users have been doing in recent years. Speaking directly as an animation director though I've come across plenty of shitty demo reels and I'd rather train someone up on software than train them to be a decent animator, so if you can cut your teeth animating on free software do it. It's such a drain on production to have to send something back for revision after revision after revision versus having someone who needs a few weeks or two to ramp up on the basics of a program but can nail the assignment on pretty much the 1st or 2nd try because they have an eye for animation. Specialization is a real thing, I've been using Maya since 1999 and I still really only know a fraction of it, poly modeling, making shaders, creating sets, clusters, joints, skinning, set driven keys, that's about it, and I can make a film with that. I use 3D-Coat for modeling, UV mapping (it's all automated now,) and texturing. I've used all sorts of shitty but free animation programs for 2D animation and it's frustrating as hell, you're not always going to work for someone willing to pay Autodesk's outrageous prices so your expertise in any one program can get nerfed just like that, but one thing that can't get pulled out from under you is basic skills - having an eye for good edgeflow, good timing, arcs, poses, weight, etc. You might struggle at first with the program's weird pan/zoom/tumble setup, or modifier stack or node editor and how that all works, but every animation program at the end of the day has a set key button somewhere, some kind of skin bind/weighting system, and joints are joints, just a pivot point and rotation information, at least you'll know what it SHOULD look like while you're struggling to orient yourself with the program, people who can't do that don't last long at my company.

@JohnSmith-rn3vl 3 года назад
@@suttus007 you are wasting your time if you want to use maya to create art if you expect Maya to do it all. I used maya for 10 years. Its a pipeline tool and its great at character animation but it takes a lot of time to learn things like the hypergraph and modelling is clunky, its slow to learn and use. Blender will be much faster to learn modelling, uv unwrapping, texturing , lighting and rendering even simple character rigging and animation is better in Blender (under 100k poly). On the other hand if you are modelling in zbrush and painting in substance then rendering in Maya you can get some amazing results. It depends on what you are trying to do. But using maya to do it all is a bad idea as a solo artist. Using blender to do it all is actually better in my most humble opinion. Try them both for a month and try learning the exact same things in each only using youtube. I bet you blender will be much faster to learn.

My opinion. 1. If you wanna work as a Motion Designer and etc in TV so go with C4D . 2. If you wanna work in game dev on 3A projects go Maya. 3 . If you wanna work in Movie VFX staff and Partical ETC so go with Goudini . 4 If you dont have specific field and wanna use it only for your self and freelance and not wanna go to industry and big studios.. so Blender is your choice .

I recently decided to do some brushing up on my Maya skills. I've worked professionally with Maya since 2001, but for the last several years I've switched to... another software. So I figured out I must refresh my Maya skills in order not to lose them. Couple of days after - It's beautiful really, I love it. Modelling in this thing is so primitive it somehow brings out tons of warm childhood memories. Granted - memories of my father cursing while constantly having to fix our family's crappy soviet-made Moskvitch, but hey - now I feel connected to the guy on a deeper level, I now truly understand what it was for him to pointlessly try and fix an out of date piece of tech :D ... when the iron curtain fell the first thing he did, was get a western-made car, i now understand how he felt :D Joking aside - seriously, on a basic level nowadays even free Sketchup has transformation controls, snapping and overall UI - better than Maya. It is not that Maya is that difficult to learn, it's just that Maya's UI is hopelessly out of date, and that is why it's difficult for new users. Even simple tasks feel slow and difficult, simple modelling feels as if you're doing something super complicated, like freaking open heart surgery. Nothing is intuitive, you have to be deliberate about things and to constantly click all over the place. It's not a big deal once you get used to it but for G's sake - it's 2020, I want to be focusing on the art, not WORKING the software. I remember it feeling super cool when I started with Maya 20 years ago, but UI design concepts have since evolved greatly, while Maya is firmly frozen in the past.

Thank you for your comment. I'm just torn between Maya and Blender. Could you tell how convenient is the blender to use in terms of modeling and character animation for indie game development compared to Maya? I would be very grateful.
@piker78
@piker78 4 года назад
@@AboboBoss to clarify - I am not specifically an animator, I generally work as a 3d concept artist, and when i can't - i work as a 3d generalist. I have mostly worked in the game industry, though I've recently started work in a film studio. Animation-wise - I have done animations on a regular basis, but nothing too complicated, mostly mechanism animations and simple character rigs. In my experience in animation - I do not find any significant differences between Maya and Blender. But as said - I'm not an animation expert, I might be wrong there. I have colleagues that express the opinion that Maya and Blender have identical capabilities for animation, but i cannot attest to that, since animation has never been my focus. Modeling-wise - blender is the better modeler. No two opinions there. My colleagues and I have done timed tests modeling exact same assets - Maya looses by a mile. U have significantly more options out of the box, functions are often grouped in smart macsoses, the interface is more thought-out and optimized for speed. UV unwrapping - with the UVpackmaster and texTools installed - Blender wastes Maya. Without them - Maya kicks Blender's butt texturing - identical. Ability to handle large scenes - up until 2.79 Blender sucked, but with 2.8 I feel Blender got the upper hand, but I might be wrong there. Undo function - Blender sucks BIG TIME, it's unworkable at times, though the developers are promising they have a fix coming. Maya's undo is lightning fast... when it doesn't crash :D Overall - my advice is - learn them both. U need them both. Like - no arguing there. Bledner is fine for indie, but at one point you might want to target a big studio and you'll need Maya too. Not that we're not using Blender at the film studio I work at right now :D If you're an INDIE developer - go with blender, learn it well. For $200-450 you can get a bunch of great paid addons and upgrade Blender to a freakin' juggernaut of a software. Once you've learned blender - there are courses out there specifically targeted at Blender users learning Maya - they can help you learn Maya in a couple of weeks once you know blender. And you need Maya. Regardless of how i might sound - I still love it and think it's a great piece of software with enormous abilities. i just wish Autodesk hadn't murdered Alias back in 2005, maybe if they hadn't Maya's interface would be more like Blender's now.
@AboboBoss
@AboboBoss 4 года назад
@@piker78 Thank you, your opinion was very helpful to me. I know Cinema 4d quite well, it is good software, but it is poorly adapted for game development even indie and isn't going to develop in this direction, only motion design in general. Many parts of C4D are obsolete. So I was in search of other software that could cover my needs. In the choice between Maya and Blender, the only things that bothered me from stopping at Blender was the fear that its game animation features will be limited or obsolete as in C4D and the modeling workflow will be worse than in Maya and that I would waste time learning it. I don’t need excessive and very complex functionality, AAA titles is not what I plan to do, so it looks like Blender is what I need. Thank you again George.
@piker78
@piker78 4 года назад
@@AboboBoss As far as Blender goes - I have worked on major game titles using Blender too - no worries whatsoever animation-wise. Blender imports and exports animation cashes perfectly, it supports FBX and Alembic, so you do not have to worry about cross-platform integration into existing pipelines either. I am also using Blender for film now - zero drama integrating camera match data from maya into blender for 3d matte paints and vfx. Integration with nuke is also as expected, though Blender still does not support overscans, and a simple workaround for that has to be used. generally - If the studio is ok with you using blender - use it. It will not hurt the quality of you work in the least as compared to maya.

Blender is super easy to learn if you just give it a small window of attention and focus (in 3-5 days, you should be able to fairly easily handle the basics like transforming objects, modeling and even simple animation). Guaranteed. Learning Maya - that is, if you're NOT coming from Blender - is also pretty easy. Nowadays, they've even added some useful interactive tutorials in Maya, which are pretty damn good actually. However … IF you're coming from Blender, you're in for some serious pain. And it will feel SO much slower and less efficient. Things like transforming objects (moving/rotating/scaling), navigational controls, etc. are going to smell like fermented poo and you'll hate it for a long while.

Sure, we have 2080ti and it doesn't make maya any faster. It only has more vram for the grey lambert1 world of maya

If you are asking this stuff, no, it won't look professional. Start learning, mate!

The answer to those questions is yes, if you want to animate anything and achieve professional-looking results, you can use ANY 3d software out there. The only variable is how long it takes to get there.

Maya is hard to learn: but it's very very powerful for industry using -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- but i am blender user: it's easy to learn and including the complete 3d tool package ... :Blender software is also very powerful for industrial use../ $:But Blender can be used even with 2 GB of memory capacity and runs on lesser hardware. $:But maya requires very high hardware Also high memory capacity is required. Houdini is a beast of its own. Arguably (or not so arguably) the hardest package to learn and make use of, but also the most novel and innovative package, together with Blender.

Hard to learn is Houdini. Maya is easy, I don't like blender, but it's because I'm already very comfortable in Maya, besides, blender has nothing that really is a quality leap, as it can be from Maya to Houdini.

Yaw guys I will tell you this from my 2 years of experience.. Maya has some technical flaws that needs some serious fixing:- -Maya crashes so unexpectedly and often when in the middle of doing your project. -Maya sometimes has missing tools in their UI particularly Xgen, and every time you need to always go through their program files and script files to fix it which could really be complicated. -Maya does not fully utilize your hardware resources which is only the Processor(CPU) and RAM. -Maya doesn't work very well with its external plugins unlike its brother 3DS Max which works great with Plugins which has much more plugins compatible with Max

I used maya for 10+ years. And I recently learned how to do all the most common tasks in blender in about 6 months by using it an hour a day and watching tutorials. I have been using Blender for about a year now and I do think Blender 2.8+ is easier to learn than Maya and there are far more tutorials available online for Blender because the community is so amazing.

@@JohnSmith-rn3vl I learned Maya in just one year and it's the most easy software I ever learned . Blender is just horrible , overcomplicated, not user friendly and those shitty shortcuts are just pissing me off . I'm using Maya for 5 years , its so easy to use it and I'm still learning and discovering new things every day . I only use Blender as a converter from Xps to Obj . I'd take Maya over Blender any day . And Blender 2.8 is not easier to learn at all . Just harder

@@methlokaijufan9729 We disagree with each other then, and that's ok. Maya just suits some people more and that's totally cool :D But personally for me for game development I find Blender/Zbrush to be way faster to use for 3d modelling and node texture set up than I ever did with Maya. I sure do miss Maya livelink and my Redshift licence some days but I think it will come to Blender soon (not redshift, just livelink).

@@JohnSmith-rn3vl I can understand you . I'm not used to nods when it comes to textures and I'm not on Gaming . That's why for me Maya is the best and I love it

i just want to say i have used 3dsMax, Blender and Maya. Maya is good for rigging and animations in my eyes. but thats all. maya just sucks. for real. terrible performance. I have no lags with max at all when working with high poly models. Blender is also doing pretty good. Now i have to work with maya because its required for the project im working on. and it sucks so much. Im unwraping a chair with 4000 faces and its laging on simple commands like: relax uvs/optimize uvs. im crying What the fuck is that.

Maya is not hard to learn, it's code is just so dog shit and has so many loopholes it just crashes on it's own. The main reason why production takes SO MUCH to deliver a movie is because of the amount of crashes and restarts the pipeline has to go through. Not to talk about how dreadfully slow and noisy Arnold render is.

Maya is garbage at best. Its outdated, and buggy as hell. I'm moving to Blender. I have more faith in its path in the future than Maya! I can't ever see moving to subscription after my edu plan runs out. What they want per month is absolutely idiotic for software that forces me to reboot multiple times a day. I have never used software that crashes or bugs out 100 times and FOR 100 DIFFERENT REASONS!
