Aba hit it on the nail. In the Colombian culture we put so much emphasis on looks at such a young age. Ffs at a young age my mom and aunts had me wear a fajas (waist trainer) as my body was still developing. Doesn't also help where Colombia is known for its plastic surgery and is encouraged to look meet these expectations by society.
@AbaNPreach
@AbaNPreach 2 года назад
Thats fked up. Waist trainers are dangerous at that age. Coming from parents, its even more frightening because they think that the upside to being slightly more curvy outweighs the health risk.

Yes. Korean culture is very similar. When my friend turned 16, her mom took her to get her eyebrows tattooed. That’s just normal. Many Korean young girls get the double eyelid surgery at a young age as well. It’s really fucked up imo.

*This is why I support **_body neutrality_** over body positivity. No, not everyone is beautiful and that's OK* To clarify: body positivity seeks to combat unfair beauty standards and pretty privilige by claiming that everyone is beautiful. Therefore, it buys into the faulty premise that beauty is important. Body neutrality acknowledges that some people are ugly, and that it has no bearing on their worth or value as a person.

@Leon Chameleon nah, we all know what is beautiful and no, everybody is not beautiful. You should try and find your own self beautiful but usually what most of us need is acceptance. So what if I don't look like Chris Hermsworth or however it's spelled? Who cares? Not everybody can look like him, he lucked out in the gene lottery on the looks department. Well, I guess I did as well because I could've end up looking WAY WAY worse but it is what it is. Don't force others to live in your delusion.

My mom had plastic surgery, she's a size 0 use to be a size 16. I was small until I had my baby. I gained about 50 pounds. She told me I needed to fix my body so my husband doesn't leave me. Then proceeded to tell me what all I needed to get done. My husband overheard this and told her he DID NOT feel that way and he would never do anything like that. She then looked at me and said "aw you have such a good man" I remember thinking "dang I wish I had a good mom" 🤦🏾‍♀️

When my daughter said she didn’t like her nose, that it’s too big(it’s definitely not big) and wanted to have work done. I had to have a deep conversation about Euro centric beauty standards, the dangers of plastic surgery, the influence that media has, changing trends, the long term effects,etc.Your features come from your ancestors, generations of people, that passed those features down to you. I had her ask herself is it her nose she doesn’t like or is it her heritage(she got her dads nose, who got it from his mother, who got it from her parent) and if she can’t find beauty, especially the beauty that everyone except her sees, then she will probably find something else she would want to change after getting a nose job. If she still feels the same way when she gets older then she can do what she wants. Our mentality, self esteem and even features change as we age and something as permanent as plastic surgery needs serious self reflection and research, there’s things I wanted to get done in my teens but over time I grew out of my insecurities and learnt to appreciate all of my features even the ones that don’t even fit the conventional standard of what is considered beautiful.

I'm glad you had that talk with her. My son is 2 and he told me his ears were too big. I was fuming at who put tbat idea in his head and went on a long explanation with him that his ears are not to big or too small. They are just fine as they are. And I got him to repeat with me that his ears are perfect and we went through every body part. By the end he was so happy that he was giggling and jumping around the room saying "my ears are not too small, my ears are not too big, they are perfect" with his toddler slang. I have been telling him his body is fine how it is since before he could talk. But even despite that, he still had an insecurity at 2 years old. What on earth?!

Recently my best friend called me to tell me she’s getting a bbl with her mom. She goes on to tell me her mom didn’t want to get it alone, so she made her get it. My heart shattered because her body image has always been very negative because of the way her mom made her feel when she was younger and thicker. now she’s barely 21 getting surgery. I try to support her and make her not feel bad about it, but I can‘t pretend like she needed this. I can’t help but be mad at her mom for making her think that she needed this.

Have a convo with her and see if that’s something she actually wants, if either of them actually did any research into the effects that would have on her body 1 week, month, year after the surgery. If she has underlying conditions. Encourage her to actually take the time to think about it, if she would actually be happy if she got it, or would she find something else to worry about. Ask her if with all the stuff her mom is doing, is she (her mom) even happy with it?

Honestly, it’s scary how people talk about plastic surgery. It’s still FUCKING SURGERY. I’m in the fitness industry I’m 26 now and when I was 22-24 everyone got their boobs done. At one point all my instructors took time off for it. In the fitness industry it’s so normal and I thought I had to do that to be normal. I lost a lot of body fat strength training so my boobs were the first things to go. What shifted my mindset was tearing my ACL & Meniscus and having to have surgery… it wasn’t a choice and I wish everyone could see how hard my recovery. I’m still affected two years post op.. I wish people could see how much your body is affected when you go under the knife. You will never be the same after the surgery even if everything goes perfectly.. After my ACL surgery I will never voluntarily go under the knife…it seems crazy to me that I even considered getting my boobs done. You won’t be young forever and making permanent decision regarding your body is honestly sad and I feel for all the young women & men making that decision. After my surgery I really focused on how I was fueling my body and my boobs grew and they fit my body and now I love them.. Start with diet & exercise and see if that helps before you cut yourself without even knowing if you will like the result.

I’ve been getting Botox, filler, etc. since I was 20 and I do it more so for preventative purposes. But it did hit me the other day that despite all of the pain, I do continue to willingly put myself through this time and time again and that I sometimes question why. But I think back to how I was treated before my procedures vs. how I’m treated now the emotional pain of the way that I was treated before far surpasses how people treat me now. It’s incredibly sad and messed up, but people are much kinder to me than they used to be. As much as I hate the fact that I’m contributing to that behavior in a way, there’s also only so much a person can take before they give in.

@@chelsealema yes female intrasexual competition between themselves. When the topic of plastic surgery and BBLs come up and women blame men en masse for causing women to go down these routes. In response many men say en masse that they don't like plastic surgery (and its close friends) and women in their droves say that they aren't getting these procedures done for men. @@PuffPuff279 While women do absolutely gift each other insecurities from a young age, men do want women who have plastic surgery or wear make up. The nuance is that they just don't want to be able to tell it has been done. It is like saying a woman wearing "no make up" looks better when she is wearing lighter make up instead of true no make up. If a woman has plastic surgery in the same way (some small modifications that help her to meet the cultural beauty standard more without being too obvious), men will also say that she is naturally beautiful and better without plastic surgery. Look 100% when somebody is attracted to you, whatever your boobs look like they are going to be absolutely Intoxicated by them. I don't care if it's men that you like to date, or women that you like to date, when someone is attracted to you the parts that you have are going to be desirable to them. I slept with a woman who had very bad stretch marks on her breasts, and very bad stretch marks on her stomach but I'll be completely forthright that woman is one of the most intoxicating women I've ever met in my life. I dated another woman who had huge saddlebags, but there was something about those saddlebags which is so unbelievably feminine to me, and that chick drove me crazy. Human sexuality, and attraction are a lot more complex than what we give them credit for, and when you put someone into a fever of Desiring you, what they find to be sensual and Visually desirable is very Broad

24:00 Aba is soooooo right!! I'm a huge nerd when it comes to teeth, I'm a dental assistant and thinking about being a dentist myself. So veneers are dumb, and so are crowns, let me explain. It's the easy way out, and it compromises the health of your teeth. Natural teeth will, when taken care of, outlast any and all fake work, including but not limited to, crowns, veneers, and any filling material that's put into cavities. Once you start drilling into natural teeth structure, it's similar taking years off of your life, except it's taking years off the life expectancy of that tooth. Straightening out your teeth, correcting your bite via braces is a better way to go if it's a healthy option for you. And braces are ONLY a good option if 1, your dentist determines it and 2 you actually take care of your teeth once you have the braces. You gotta understand how hard it is to keep your teeth clean and be willing to put in the work.

Agreed. My mother is the most beautiful woman in the world to me. She always received compliments on her beauty no matter where we were. Though she never received plastic surgery, as a child everyday I witnessed her pick herself apart. I’ve been told how much I am her twin but, I never found myself attractive because of her low self esteem. My thought process is, if the woman I could only hope to be as beautiful as doesn’t like herself, how could I see myself as beautiful? Even her telling me how pretty I was/am I perceived as a lie. How could you love the features you hate on me but not you? It’s a mind screw. I work on that daily. I couldn’t imagine how a child of a parent who received elective surgery feels.

I think what Aba says about detecting rhinoplasties is what it's called "uncanny valley". Our brain is structured to detect what is "unnatural". It happened with CGI as well in movies. No matter how perfect the representation is (Peter Cushing in one of the Star Wars prequels), our eyes are telling us, that is doesn't move normal or it doesn't look like a real person. It's a self-defense mechanism to identify threats.

@@psionicinversion , "uncanny valley" effect initially came from the robotics world, but it's anywhere that humans feel unsettled by something that attempts to pass as naturally human. It includes cgi/graphics, but it extends to anthropomorphic creations and can definitely include artificial looking humans in reality. Anything that we get a 'creepy' feeling from looking at because it is attempting to fool us into thinking it is natural is thought to be our species just protecting ourselves from potential danger, and the 'uncanny valley effect' falls into that category.

Another obstacle on the way to treating the root cause of issues in general is that often treatment of the symptoms is much more monetizable than treatment of the root cause. How much “economic growth” is there if someone changes their beliefs about something and no longer needs to buy any products to treat the symptom? Certainly there’s no return on investment in most cases to buy ads to tell people they can fix the root cause for $0, but there sure might be a return on investment for someone to buy ads implying that buying a product and getting a long term worse outcome is the only way. Perhaps this is obvious but I think it’s important to highlight how the monetary incentives can easily distort collective consciousness through the instrument of advertising.

Seriously, I had a hemoglobin birthmark that one day got rubbed open. It squirted blood everywhere, like in the old movies when they slit someone’s throat. I went to the doctor because I was concerned about it possibly opening again and me getting blood on client’s carpets. The doctor said he could remove it and that it would leave a scar. I was so worried about the potential of bleeding all over the place again that I had him remove it. 5 years later, it started resurfacing and now I have a scar with a birthmark rising up. I just tell people that I protected a kid from an ace murderer by blocking the chop with my arm. Hematoma-hemoglobin…one of those. It’s been about 16 years. Don’t remember what he called it

Over the years she had health problems and symptoms like rheumatoid arthritis and they couldn't pinpoint what was wrong with her. She finally found out after 3 decades what was wrong. Breast implant illness. The silicone implants had been leaking also. However it was very difficult for her to find a surgeon that was willing to remove them and clean out the silicone so she could her heal the damage to her body.. They seem to have no problem putting them in, but to take them out and fix the damage was not so easy. She has taken awhile to heal, but she is making great progress in restoring her health, implant free.

Looking at my child and seeing some of the characteristics that I used to be insecure about or just seeing myself in them period gave me a sense of compassion and love for my younger self that I didn't have before. When I look at my children and feel so much love for them, how could I hate myself when I'm in them and they are so pure and deserving of love. And the child I used to be is the same way, deserving of love. It’s rough. Our society has not learned to accept aging gracefully. Our obsession with looking young forever is imo unnatural. I’m 40 and I can tell I needed reading glasses. When I went into the eye doctor everyone was walking around on eggshells about how I might potentially need bifocals. Like I knew I needed them and I went in there asking for them. I’m fully aware that I’m 40. I’m not young. I’m literally middle aged but they kept acting really weird about it and saying thinks like “these are ‘training’ bifocals” “you don’t need the real bifocals yet” “don’t worry you’re still young”. Like wtf?! I’m not going to break down because I’m getting older and my eyes are aging. My eyes were already fucked up with near sight for decades. Sorry to ramble on in your comment but it really irks me this fragility that our generation and prior generations seems to have about getting older. Learning to accept it makes it much less of an issue and also understanding the reality of taking care of your body so it lasts another 40+ years.

The thing with plastic surgery and people with deep insecurities about their body image is, its never going to be enough. First its gonna be, "oh maybe if i just had nicer boobs, id look good enough for myself" and that is true for a short period of time, but then you stress about another insecurity and then want plastic surgery for that, this time its easier to decide because you already had one surgery, and it becomes like an addiction. It will never satisfy you completely. Best thing people can do is just accept the way they look.

This is always an interesting topic to me. I’ve never really dealt with self esteem issues so I always sit out on the discussion because I don’t know what it feels like to think I look ugly. But I think one thing that has helped me is the fact that I really don’t play into compliments about my looks. Like I acknowledge them and receive them but they don’t make my day or stay with me long. I just register it as “This specific person thinks I look nice,” instead of “Yeah I know I look nice because they confirmed it for me.” I always tell people I’m average looking because for everyone person that find me extremely attractive there’s one that would be offended if you suggested they found me attractive. I’m okay with knowing I am ugly to a large group of people and I’m average to a large group of people. These have no bearing on my life. 😂🤷🏾 I just wish people accepted the fact that you’re never going to be highly attractive to everyone. I also wish people would prioritize complements and comments about actual life defining things like your attitude and behavior.

The fun history of plastic surgery is that it has decent roots: It really hit its stride during World War I, because young men were being maimed in the trenches and coming home with injuries that basically left them unable to function in society (do not google it unless you have a strong stomach, seriously. When I say 'maimed', I do mean *"maimed").* There was a very realistic understanding that while you may be physically healthy, you might have an injury or deformity that causes you intense social distress and impairs your quality of life overall. There are so many legitimate uses for plastic surgery, where injury or deformity prevents someone from being able to function socially. The problem is that nowadays people have a screwed up definition of what will reasonably impair your ability to function in society. You do not need a BBL, you do not need a tummy-tuck, you do not need to have your buccal fat sucked out in order to function smoothly in the world. And too many people have this weird idea that because a surgery is cosmetic that it isn't "real" surgery, with all the same risks attached. Don't even get me started on the ones who go outside of the U.S. to get procedures done because U.S. doctors refused to do it.

Being from a completely different culture to see these young women overcoming their issues by taking route of plastic surgery makes me realize the extent of severity of confidence issues they must be facing because of different reasons. Of course I have my own insecurities too but I would never think of taking that route because of how unheard of it is in my culture but seeing them stating all those things without an issue felt kinda surprising that changing their bodies wasn't such a big deal... it must have been truly hard then the pressure from whatever factors for these women to take it so normally.

“I was so beautiful and confident that I had surgery/surgeries to get rid of superficial insecurities.” I can’t believe people can actually say shit like this with no hint of irony.

Wow Preach is really empathetic ❤️ love that he's really trying to understand why these people do the things they do. It's the underlying issues that's the problem.

Body modification has always been about moving away from 'natural' beauty where as boobs jobs etc are have been to move towards the beauty standards - coming from a woman with 20 years ongoing tattooing /piercing. The pink hair etc and all the usual teenage stuff and experimenting... not so much, but 14 years working towards becoming an emergency room nurse/trauma co ordinator etc whilst continuing to colour my skin, in comparison I have a box of letters and cards under my bed saying 'I'm sorry I didnt get the nurses name but she was so kind or what not and has the most beautiful butterflies flying all the way up her arms, I hope you find out who it was because I didnt think I was gonna make it home that night...

In high school, I took a creative writing class. We all got asked “what is something you can change about yourself” I recall saying “i wish I had different colored eyes” the teacher automatically told me “why do you feel this way, how would that change who you are” I am grateful for that conversation. You have to love who you are, the exterior doesn’t matter. when we leave this material world, we don’t take these looks with us or even material possessions.

the exterior does matter, but you have to keep it in perspective and not let it rule over your self image (easier said than done I know).

Glad you love 💘 yourself. I hv a brown eye & blue eye that move in sequence & healthy BUT I was in an accident where my eye was cut. I hv a healthy eye that I can't see out of. Sad thing is I've asked ppl not to cut their eye to hv a blue eye. 😖🤦🏽‍♀️ Trust me, it's not THAT serious. I can drive, work, read, party & everything else. I honestly don't agree w/ surgeries unless it's for bad health.🤷🏽‍♀️imo

@@justasplash380 what do you mean by cut your eye?

@@bettermanchannel770 I was in a car accident where the airbag threw the windshield in my face. I have had to tell young ladies not to stab their eyes. I had 7 surgeries in 11 months. Definitely not worth it for a blue eye.
