I love my Porsche Boxster 718 GTS but is the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS the perfect 911 and my obvious upgrade ? I borrowed a 992 generation Carrera GTS and tried to answer that question.

Porsche gave me a new 911 GTS for a weekend. Amazing car but almost too much power. Also felt some turbo lag, but didn’t use sports mode correctly. Back in my 718 Boxster thought it would feel step-down, but really doesn’t. 718 is a different ride, but so much fun. Possibly get a 911 convertible one day, but 911 and 718 are both superb and very individual cars. The 718 is great value for money as well.

Yet another great video Ped! The GTS version of the Cayman, Boxster and 911 have long been my choices in the ranges. Not having the spare cash for any Porsche, I usually play for one of those variants on BoTB when I can. I love minis too so we have similar tastes in cars generally!

Great video! Having gone from a 991.2 C2S to a 718 Spyder in recent years, I couldn't help but miss the rear engined feel of the 911. Sure the 718 Spyder was epic and arguably the more exploitable on a back road, but the 911 felt that bit more special.. not to mention more usable if you have two small children... ps. I have a manual Carrera T on order which on paper could be viewed as a step backwards in outright pace, but that would be splitting hairs.

Hi Pete - my first Porsche was a 718 GTS 2.5 Coupe. Loved it but like you, I longed for a flat 6 992 CS. I’ve had the 992 for just over 2 years now and have just come back from a road trip to Lake Garda, via a Porsche Factory / Museum tour. They only build 250 cars a day for the world hence the wait and low depreciation. On the waiting list for a 992.1 Cab2S. Just hope to get my allocation before hybrid version released. It’s an amazing car. Although I have gone for the S again, the base is all you need for UK roads. Good luck with your search. Looking forward to your Goodwood films, especially as I won’t be there this time. Keep up the great content

Thanks for sharing another one of your very inclusive-style offerings Pete. Your channel is just the perfect destination for a Porsche enthusiast. Now in your shoes I would opt for a 991.2 GTS. Values had begun to drop as the 992 was introduced but through the past six months they have begun to firm up again. I wonder though if you would consider the Carrrera 4 GTS given our inclement weather, its all-round usability and near bulletproof handling. The Targa as you are aware is an all-wheel drive as is the Turbo. I love the 991.2 and visually, it offers a little more differentiation than the obviously very capable 992 series. Yes the 992 is doubtless a better car with a much updated interior. Porsche always sees to it that a successive generation is exactly what its meant to be but the 991.2 is an excellent machine. A car you that you can daily for many years to come. Perhaps even the one that is your forever 911. IMHO naturally. Look forward to your next vid. Stay safe!!

Great review, as always. I first saw and fell in love with a 911 when I was 14 years old. Some 50 years later I am expecting a 992 GTS in September and I can't wait. I wimped-out on the centre-lock wheels for the reasons you mentioned and I was ultra cautious on the options because the prices are eye-watering. My only disappointment is that I can't specify my tyre preference - seemingly the guys in Zuffenhausen make that choice for you. The Michelin PS4's would be great and the P Zero's a close second but I really don't want the Goodyear Eagles and it seems wrong that buyers can't decide when options exist for the fabric used for the sun visors or other equally trivial items. When it finally arrives I hope it is as good as you and other RU-vidrs tell me it is!
@larkfield2000
@larkfield2000 Год назад
I’ve been running my GTS for 6 months on the Goodyears and I’ve been fairly happy with them. i think they are sensitive to exactly balancing the pressures across the axle especially at the back. I prefer them over the P Zero’s I had on a previous 991 CS. But I’d be really interested in the performance of the Michelins and like you I’d like to be able to choose tyres upfront.

Agree, I'd definitely go with 911T, fairly light weighted, fast enough on public roads, and some unique features that you can’t even have on regular 911s; to be honest, if possible, I’d suggest to keep the 718 GTS and try to get the 911T, that will be a perfect combo to enjoy both of the NA and turbo engines; or at least, 718 4.0 GTS is something you shouldn’t sell it now, Bc it’s the last of its own, whereas 911 still gets some time to be fully electrified; anyways, as a owner of 718 4.0 GTS, I’m waiting for the 911T, and I’ll try best to keep both of them FOR EVER!
@richardhoulton4016
@richardhoulton4016 Год назад
@@crazypaupau Agree. The packaging sweet spot in the range. Light (for a 911), sports exhaust and lowered suspension, 20/21 rims, and rear steer is available as a reasonable cost option. Power is plenty for a road car. It’s where I’d go.

Hey Ped from San Diego again. Love that Python Green 911 GTS and it reminds me of going into Pioneer Porsche in Denver in 1980 and seeing a brand new Python Green 911 Coupe in the showroom. Love at first sight! I bought my first Porsche two years later. It was a lightly used 1978 Guards Red 911SC Targa. Drove that car all over Colorado for several years and then from Denver to Tampa FL and finally out to San Diego. Never let me down once. I honestly think you're in the sweet spot with your beautiful Boxster GTS, especially given the price you paid. Hang on to it. Where else are you going to get that kind of top-down performance and style for that price any more?

I had a 997 GTS manual GTS 2wd and preferred it. I would not have rws, PDCC or pdk again. If you really want a 911 then look very closely at the 991.1 GTS 2wd before you jump as its a more engaging at lower speed shall we say. I would say however I preferred my 981 spyder over both of them but it has its issues like the gearing and lazy engine tune amongst others.

A very good analysis. The 992 GTS/4GTS is a very enjoyable, efficient, practical and reliable car. Wether with a light pack or not. I used to own a 981 Cayman S and now drive the above. Porsche certainly knows how to make engines and gearboxes. There is a very unique driving experience with these cars, the first of all being the sensational driving position, with the wheel facing you like in a race car (and not like in a lorry). I think one makes the right choice with any flat-6 potted Porsche as long as the car is in great condition. Ultimately I am a 911 fan, but I wouldn’t mind a 718 Speedster 😎

Hi Ped As you are aware I am huge fan of the brand. 911 love them, my Carrera 4S Cabrio I would rate as best car I have been fortunate to own. Following our house move and downsize, 2 cars out of 5 had to go including the 911. If I were to consider another it would rule out the latest versions, too expensive. Therefore 991 gen1 GTS Cabrio or 997 GTS Cabrio. Whilst you have to accept an older car with the 997, careful search brings up some very good cars with excellent spec and relatively low mileage, and money wise Boxster prices. I can confirm very useable, fantastic driving experience, and of course the Pups would travel 1st Class.😎😎

Great stuff, I would love the same next. THink prices of second hand will go through the roof again as the new generation comes out. Anyway, you mentioned auto blip' but whilst I think I know what you mean I am not entirely sure and wondered if it is something I have on my Cayman 718 S PDK? I expect not as it's PDK but not really sure about such techincal things. It would be good to see you describing how to drive such cars, that is, the skill of using the gears correctly on a 'B' road, launch control, how to use the throttle (do you push stright to the metal) etc. etc. I always think I don't use mine to its full potential. Obviously speed limits need to be considered but it would be nioce just to know the basics of how to drive a Porsche to its full potential. Looking forward to the next video.
@PetrolPed
@PetrolPed Год назад
You have the same thing on your PDK. It’s also called ‘Rev Matching’. When you change down through the now the car blips the throttle as the clutch engages, change down the gear and not the engine is spinning at a faster speed matched to the speed of the gearbox. When the clutch disengages it’s now a smooth change. Manual shift auto box do this. In a manual car you can do this yourself by heel and toeing (braking and blipping the throttle with your right foot at the same time) or in some cars it is done for you with an auto blip feature. Meaning your right foot only has to brake. Hope that makes sense 👍

Pete, enjoyed the vlog and never worry about waxing lyrically about a wonderful car. The elephant in the room I feel is the price, it’s not Porsche specific but the market in general for enthusiasts seems to have went above and beyond the usual increases as time passes. Good plan to look at the 991 variants but I wouldn’t hang about as the prices are on the rise. Personally I think you’ve found a sweet spot with the Boxster and possibly a 4.0 variant or spyder might be a better fit? All the best, Kevin.

What a delicious car! I agree though, price hike is a bit scary. Everyman's 10 car garage has a 911. 😎😁

Although...That GTS with the stripped out back seats and extra's does put it in the same category as the T which is a great car and my pick of the 992 range.

Pete, all of these motors are turbos (exception gt3/rs). Otherwise, great review. I personally am finding it hard to pick between a 718 spyder and 992 carrera T

Great review as always… Had my Cayman GTS4.0 for 18mths and it’s amazing, but…. started to look at 911’s because I “need” to have a 911!! The GTS is the affordable sweet spot the current 911 range, so test drove a 992 C2 GTS manual. Awesome car, looked a step up from the GTS4.0 until I drove it. Insanely fast, but just didn’t have the intimate, engaging feel of the cayman, or the sound of N/A engine. It felt big and fidgety over bad roads. I was expecting to be blown away , but wasn’t. Cost to swap was 70k!! I desperately wanted a 911 but the test drive made me realise how good the Cayman GTS4.0 really is!! So will keep the GTS4.0 and buy a Macan instead 😂

Nice to hear. I'm picking up a GTS4.0 boxster soon(ish) upgrading from a base. Keep being worried that I will like it less than my base, esp as the PPFs have come in since my 2018 base. Also hankered after a 911, but a bit spendy for me, and they also seem a bit too big for the roads around here to relax with.

I had the similar experience when I test drove a 992 GTS convertible with PDK. I didn’t connect with the car, it felt impersonal. Coming from a 718 Spyder I ended up with a 992 Carrera T manual, and I just love it.

You can get a 991.1 s for 70k and in my opinion sounds great , has lots of low down pull and a great top end . It’s a bigger car than the 997 but still looks classic 911. The 992 just looks bloated and difficult to justify the price

Hi Pete, great video, however I don’t understand why you mention na 911’s a few times but the 992 GTS is indeed a Turbo, also there is no certainty that the mark2 992 will only be available as a hybrid, my guess is that they will do something similar to the Panamera, with internal combustion only and hybrid options, let’s hope so anyway

992 pref. (or 991.2) Carrera 4 Cabriolet for me. The 992 C4 Cab as I would spec one with PTS and all the options I'd want comes to ~138K on the configurator. If I were to spec an exclusive manufaktur interior as well it would push the price to ~150K! So, I think the exclusive manufaktur interior is just too much, but I think PTS is worth it, at least for my tastes. Even without PTS, a C4 Cab build to my specs would be 130K+, and I reckon by the the time you're speending that much, the extra for PTS can be worth it. However, I don't think PTS is worth it just to get a slightly different shade of a colour that is offered non-PTS. I see a lot of PTS colours that most people wouldn't see as different to a non-PTS colour. And of course, it's hard to justify paying for PTS for a colour that was a regular offering on the previous generation. The fact that the price of the base 911 has gone up circa 14K over the last couple of years is hard to take, but it's simply a sign of thee times. However, I think the Cayman/Boxster GTS 4.0 by comparison looks increasingly good value, and the 911 range harder to justify paying extra for. That said; I just love the look of the 911 and I like that bit extra interior space. I've seen quite nicely spec'd 992 C4/C2S Cabs with low miles for circa 95K, and 991.2 Cabs for less than 70K. My head says that either of these is a better way to go than ordering new, and I think for most people, who end up spec'ing very similar builds, it would also make financial sense. IMO, placing an order for a brand new car only makes sense if you want something significantly different, or of course if you're going down the leasing route. I'm getting on in years and I still tend to think of buying cars outright, or maybe with a little bit of finance, but I appreciate that these days most people are getting new cars on a lease deal, which can make getting a new car a very different proposition. If I could see a way to placing an order for a brand new 992.1 C4 Cab with PTS, etc, I'd do it. I generally like to keep my cars longer than most people, and I think cars are already complicated enough. I'd much prefer a non-hybrid 911 in the longer term. But, if you change your cars within the warranty period, as most new car buyers do, I'd probably wait for the 992.2.

Overkill Pete. Boxter all day as a convertible. Better looking IMO. I drove a 911.2 GTS Targa vs my Spyder…Spyder all day for me. Having said that, would I like to have a 911…yes, but maybe the base w/o any goodies

I sold my 992 911S. Really uncomfortable no lumber support in normal 4!wat power seats and I’m 6”2 and it had 7 factory faults. After having 5 Porsches I’m now taking a break. Don’t forget the new 992 point 2 911 comes out later this year.

GTS at 120quid, is cheap!! Over 250quid in Aust. Helped my mate just order one, A$434k!! Same as a base GT3, just can't get a GT3. We we told 18-24mth, but ended up only being 9m. As for the hybrid, they are delayed until mid '24 we were told, as of only 15Jul23. And the dash on the 992.2 is horrible. I think you need to talk to ya mate, Joe, he bagged the crap out of the GTS. Maybe a T or second hand GT3 is for you? But do what is right for you and no one else. Personally I prefer a NA engine....GT3 or pre 98 (and yes, for others, I've had a real turbo!). PS, so glad that you told people how to get into buckets, they are a must in a GT car!! many people just throw themselves in and then complain. Don't get a turbo, you can't use it on the roads anymore. Also I remember 3 gears, ha!

I 'had' a 911 way back, 1970's version, never liked it, just a Vdub with a good engine. I'm sure I'm way out-of-date in my opinion but it has put me off them ever since. Seeing you getting bumped around in that reminds me how hard sports cars are to live with.

Consider a 991.1 Ped. 991.2 were the first of the turbo cars. A .1 will be NA, and potentially pre-OPF - then you’ll get a proper flat six noise ! 😀. Downside will be that there’s no CarPlay. Let me know if you’d like to drive one 😉

I agree!! I also have a 991.1 GTS (my third 911... I am an addict!). It is an incredible car for the money and the sound from the N/A engine is epic! £75 - £85k will get you a lovely car from a Porsche dealer with 2yrs warranty, and residuals are very strong on 911s! Good luck with your choice! BTW some good 3rd party CarPlay modules are available for the PCM 3.1 👍
