Despite some great news in the form of more open Tesla Superchargers in the UK, things are looking a little scary over at Tesla!

As a Tesla owner I love the idea of superchargers being open to everyone. Long term this may make Tesla the decider of the standard pricing, subsequently making 3rd party chargers cheaper to all. And lol, the supercharger was why I initially got the car but I can assure you the loyalty to the brand runs deeper than just the infrastructure access😂.

I am a Zoe owner and I paid 35p per kWh at a Tesla charger in Carmarthen. I took out the 1 month membership at £8:99 so even if only chargers once this month on a Tesla supercharger, it is still cheaper than a BP or Shell chargers.

Knowing Tesla they will just arrive one day and double up the amount of chargers at a highlighted busy location. I believe they are going to kill off the competition on price as Tesla own their network whereas others have investors who expect a huge return on their investment…..fat chance, who’s going to charge at 69ppkWh when dead opposite you can charge for 42ppkWh ?

I think what is reported in the newspapers and what actually comes as an announcement from Tesla needs to be treated with caution. Before jumping to conclusions I think wait a little while until the smoke clears to see what is actually going to happen. As a non Tesla BEV driver I would like to see the whole of the supercharger network opened to all asap, even though for 90% of my charging is done at home on cheap rate.

I don't generally look or plan charge stops and just stop whenever I feel the need, most are motorway services etc so I can almost guarantee now there will be chargers and also just presume the tesla ones won't work on my car as service stations are generally tesla only, I feel many will do this and not check the tesla app or any other too for open to all chargers, if they were all open to all then more would probably use the knowing they would all work. This may change in the future if tesla do install all v4s as open to all or eventually open up all chargers.

Its not a case of "regularly charging" being cheaper. In many cases ONE charge is cheaper. Say 40p vs 80p/kWh. Anything over 23kWh means the first charge covers the membership.
@markwringe2826
@markwringe2826 2 месяца назад
No, you're talking about the difference between Tesla non-member prices and other network prices, Tesla generally around 15 to 40p less, depending on network. Membership is a FURTHER potential saving, and the difference between member price and non-member price is about 8 to 10p per KWh. So you cover the membership costs when you've charged about 110 kwh in a month.

The reporting on this is (I believe) drastically flawed. The media, in the absence of solid facts, has invented a story that is sensational (that's never happened before?) . Watching some of the better informed US reportage, it seems that the head office design and engineering departments together with sales and marketing have been let go, together with redundant upper management. The reason seems to be that the Rev 4 charger is all that is needed for cars for some years, as it has capability to upgrade charging beyond current needs. No mention was made of losing all installation and maintenance personnel. Rollout would naturally slow when there is a solid installed base anyway.

More chargers and more EV’s equals longer charge times as the grid capacity is not going to increase in any significant way. When there are 1,000 megawatts available, it is shared equally across all charging points when use is high. Waiting times at charging stations at key holiday times have been huge recently in many countries, all just trying to get a slice of the one cake that has to be shared between so many.

Doubtful it is over. The majority of non EV owners have no home charging option. I'm in the process of getting an EV but live in a flat with no home charge option. Tesla will be my go to network for charging as it's the cheapest then it's BP pulse as I have free subscription as an Uber driver. Lots of room for expansion of chargers especially in Wales where there are very few. Also places like Bristol airport has no easy fast charger option for airport transfer drivers. Big money still to be made by Tesla expanding their charger option. But they need to look at 800volt options rather han current 400 volt they offer.

No. He's reacting to Ford etc "Pulling back" from EVs, meaning the extra chargers can't be justified (there are sufficient for TESLA vehicles) The network as is will be "finished" updated and gaps filled, as per his "XChange" (formally "tweet") last week. .... Plus He's doing what he's done before, *PREEMPTING* what he believes is a pending Geopolitical or economic issue coming later this year. . Note the "Cheaper vehicles, existing lines, elements of unboxed" announcement, which most missed, concentrating on the (wrong) "model 2 cancelled" rubbish. . Those vehicles are designed to "recession proof" Tesla. . (Personally, I'm taking notice!)

The cost (to charge) is 50% less than others. The cost to install is reputed to be as low as 20% per unit. . That's a parallel situation to let's say "Model Y vs Mach-E" , with the Y making ±15% and the Mach-E losing more than the build cost..... If you're trying to make up tens of thousands of pounds per unit charging double the price (let's say 80 vs 40p/kWh) that's a lot of kWh catch up (even only £10,000 more build cost? That's 25,000kWh just to be even) . Then your "rival" makes it known that the membership makes their system cheaper after the first 24kWh..... Basically less than 1 charge per month. And they're reliable. . Looks bad for the others if customers figure it out? ..... What does he know? Well, if the prices are set to benefit the Tesla users, adjusted to "just above break even" with a margin for maintenance and expansion, there's not much meat on the bone? . But, he invited others to benefit. When they agreed, Tesla began scaling (at their own cost? Or, maybe with a "contribution" from the company joining? 🤔) . Having started the investment, those companies essentially renaged on the deal by "pulling back" from EVs, meaning the network would be too large, underutilised. . This forced a re-evaluation. (imo)

I think they fired the supercharger site expansion team, partly because the Exec leading that team wasn’t making the headcount reductions demanded by Elon. That's how I've read it. They have got rid of the team setup to expand the network to new locations. Elon said on X "Tesla still plans to grow the Supercharger network, just at a slower pace for new locations and more focus on 100% uptime and expansion of existing locations" They haven't sacked everyone as someone still needs to manage the network and grow it.

I think Elon is very clued up, he says they will continue expanding just at a slower rate. CATL and BYD have recently anounced new batteries capable of much greater range and charging speeds. Not as many superchargers or any rapid chargers for that matter will be needed in the not too distant future. Slowing down the installation of expensive superchargers would seem logical and that obviously brings job losses. I imaginre the only ones that will be installed going forward will be the ones already in planning Elon with his exceptional buisness acumen realises all this and he is just trimming the fat to keep Tesla as competitive as ever. I wouldn't be surprised if he opens the full network up in the next few years. Imagine a few million EV owners paying £90 a year just to access cheap rates.

Only people who can afford to charge at these fast charge stations are probably business users who can write off the cost against tax I have only used these 4 times in 36 months of owning an EV and do approx 12k a year quite content to use my reduced overnight tariff at 7.5p, it seems that Tesla have cottoned on that to get the return on there investment they needed to open up the chargers to other users and let other infrastructure players catch up.
