"(I can't get no) Satisfaction" has a line "he can't be a man if he doesn't smoke the same cigarettes as me". The song is almost 60 years old but somehow still rings true after all this time, people have a need for their tastes to be shared by everyone else and the only thing that has changed about it in modern times is that it's much easier to impose their preferences onto everyone via the internet.

One point in Spec Ops' favor is that, even if you *do* hate the gameplay, the whole game is maybe six hours. You can polish it off in a single afternoon and move on to other things, and the story will likely stick with you longer than any of the actual experience of playing it.
@desert0fox

"Can you even remember why you came here?" honestly that gameplay was nothing special but at that time that plotline really got me invested. The two biggest problems with Spec Ops: The Line, outside the mediocre game play, are: Firstly that all the bad things it chides you for doing are things that it *made* you do in order to progress to the point where it chides you for them. It would be clever and poignant if it presented you with situations where you can blindly do the things that other shooters at the time pretty much expected you to do and go along with without question, *_but_* you can refuse to do those things without the game grinding to a halt. I know that someone at the studio said that if you didn't want to be forced to commit atrocities you could choose turning off the game... But fuck that. The absolute fucking gall of telling people to turn off your game after you've already got their money, just because they already learned the lesson that you're sanctimoniously trying to force on your players is staggering. Secondly... Spec Ops: The Line was not the first Spec Ops game. All the previous Spec Ops games were utterly mediocre, cookie cutter 'modern shooter' games played all the tropes that The Line chided players for blindly accepting in 'modern shooters' far _more_ straight than any of its more successful competitors. It may have done it extremely poorly, but even Call of fucking Duty tried to present some level of nuance more than the "Fuck yeah! Brown people bad, 'Murica good!" shit that the original Spec Ops games did.
@mikoto7693
@mikoto7693 Год назад
@@RvEijndhovenThat’s why I never played Spec Ops The Line myself despite my curiosity. If I’m forced to do something in a computer game then it’s not my choice to be chided for and the message won’t get through.
@notreallythere477
@notreallythere477 Год назад
@@RvEijndhoven Both of your complaints are missing the same point. Spec Ops: The Line isn't chiding you for playing *Spec Ops: The Line* but rather is chiding you for playing *any game within that same genre to begin with* . Like, you *know* what you're getting into when you pick up a Modern Warfare or any other game of its like. Even if you're not actively dropping white phosphorous on civilians, you're still committing a fuckton of war crimes (the Red Cross held a meeting about ten years back about how cavalier Modern War-style video games were about the Geneva Conventions, in fact), all because a little objective marker told you to. Also at the time The Line was released, you were pretty much murdering brown people exclusively in all such games. Sure, Spec Ops: The Line is also doing a pretty solid Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now homage on the surface, but all the fourth wall breaks and subtext are a criticism not of the player, but of the genre itself, and the people who keep it afloat. Much like how Bioshock Infinity didn't actually care about whatever was going on in Columbia because the actual message was that making sequels to Bioshock was a stupid idea because it's basically the same thing every time.

Brandon Sanderson talked about this in his lectures, there's this idea that many writers are all writing for cinema instead of writing for their medium. When you're writing a movie script you can just assume the audience will stick around until the end because they're socially and physically trapped in the theatre, but take that same movie and make it a game the player has to come back to over and over again for hours at a time and suddenly there is absolutely no guarantee they'll have the patience for the set up and so will never expierience the twist
@fieryrebirth

Yep. Ever since I looked into the hero-worship social phenomena in Hideo Kojima, and his weird "trend-chasing" cinematography, and strange, hack writing in his games I noticed the pattern. It's clear as day Kojima wants to direct movies, which is probably why he feels "above" video game writing and doesn't exhibit much passion for video game dev as he did back then. It doesn't surprise me that he's not the only one who want to write for movies and not games, but may feel they are stuck with games. Games and movies are vastly different mediums when it comes to storytelling, and it seems not a whole lot of people get that.

Because someone's life is not a singular interesting event and not all stories should be about a singular event. And let's not forget about something called pacing and character development. This story takes place over...18 years or more in a 30 to 70 hours long game. Not everything can be balls destroying, tits growing and wig wearing as the image of Jimbo (my god. He is an entire circus, costumes and all). Take game of Thrones or rather "a song of ice and fire" and look at how many events happen and how many of those are "interesting" and how many are 2 characters talking while eating or doing mondane things. Are those moments "the most interesting thing that happens to the characters"? All I get from your comment is that your teacher was an idiot and there's a reason he was teaching. As the saying goes, "when you can't do something, teach it". Of something like that. Given the state of the modern education system, I'm not shocked. The first time you watch it you're lead to believe that Walter was just this frustrated nerdy guy who was dealt a bad hand and resorted to making meth because he was left with relatively few options. But after seeing what happened to him later and revisiting it, you realize that he was always kind of a selfish bastard whose ego was going to destroy everything and everyone around him no matter what. There's something I've been thinking about a lot recently. And its that there's, like, two broad camps of media consumers. Especially in videogames. ESPECIALLY in RPGs, open world games, and all other big adventure-y games. Basically, to put it real bluntly, there's people who prefer "quality" and people who prefer, I guess like... "bang for the buck." This first really hit me some years ago when I saw a reddit poll about ideal jRPG length. One of the options was basically "the longer the better" and, wow, that seemed to be a rather popular choice at the time. Granted, one whole reddit poll doesn't really make a case, and I haven't exactly been collecting hard statistics since then, but... I dunno, it really does kinda feel like if you ask any individual person about this, they're gonna lean towards either "I don't want my time wasted" or "please waste as much as my time as possible on purpose." And I don't necessarily mean either of those in a bad way, it's just an observation that I haven't really formulated a proper academic thesis about, heh. Point is, I can see how the latter group is more likely to come to bat for such games as these.

Or the fact that they are vegan, the fact that they are communists, that they hate a certain person (especially those that hate a certain orange man), that they wear a dress and call themselves with a girls name. And it's even funnier when some try to disguise their childish behavior by claiming that it's the opposite. It's not the attention span of a toddler, it's that people don't have time. That's why they binge watch trash childish Disney shows and movies for hours everyday. It's all about lack of time and the quality of stuff. That's why everyone eats McDonalds: they just don't have time to cook, not that people are lazy and love all the sugar and fats prepared in a few minutes tops. But what feels cartoonish in a fantasy world will never reach the levels of real life slavery such as buying babies by the pound or feeding children to dogs and having the parents watch. Both things which we have accounts of. It's hard to write "slavery bad" that doesn't feel anvilicious, sadly.
@superdark336
@superdark336 Год назад
the problem with writing that is that its shallow and toothless if its just "haha! i have slaves because im an evil evil person!" instead of "but i NEED slaves!!!! they are my right! actually its moral and good and im justified and youre all jealous and why are you angry at me" they invented fake science and formulated language and theology around trying to enforce everything they do to be justified

It's also a good parallel for Fantasy Oppression, wherein the oppressors have some reason for oppressing the oppressed that seems unfair or misunderstood. But that's not how fucking oppression works? Cyclops in X-men faces prejudice because people are afraid that he'll trip on the subway, have his sunglassess fall off, and his eyeballs melt a carriage full of children. You know, an actual fear? Conservatives have prejudice against trans people for insane things they totally made up because actual prejudice is almost always intrinsically irrational, and usually is created for reason of power and control. "People fear and misunderstand my people for our magic, which i constantly use to help you inc rutal cobat fights by creating fireballs with my hand" - that's seems a rational reason innate power imbalance to be nervous about to be honest! Trans people don't have magic power. Black people can't control the weather with their minds! Prejudice is not grounded in rationality! Sorry, "people just seem to hate and fear mutants [whose worst members keep threatening the entire planet with genocide on the daily]" is my pet peeve. People talk about how heavy-handed that TOS episode about racism is, the one with the white-on-the-left-side and white-on-the-right-side aliens, but it was right! Prejudice is grounded in arbitrary and stupid things!

Fallout New Vegas did it pretty well though. The Legion are not good people, but their methods are consistent and make sense within their logic. There is also a lot of nuance surrounding their collective because they are emulating Caesar, but their interpretation of history and Hegelian Dialectics are not completely accurate. So if their understanding is fundamentally flawed, it makes sense why they are doing these horrible things.

I feel like I do have to say that slavery is bad. What we're talking about is how cartoonishly simple it's portrayed as in games. Generally there is no conversation being had about why slavery is being used in these systems other than the people doing it are evil and enjoy human suffering. Bioshock infinite was pretty cartoonishly evil, but they bothered to explain why they thought it was necessary to create an underclass of people and basically were scapegoating people who were already being scapegoated at that time.

We really need to get out of the practice of judging the validity of a review/opinion of a game based on how much or how little someone has played the game. What you described is totally right, you DON'T need to have finished a game to have formed a good opinion of it, nor do you have to have to make an opinion immediately. As you said, I don't need to listen to the entire 20 year backlog of a singer's songs to decide I don't like their music. That's the point of sampling something, you can get a good idea of what it's like and decide if you are a fan or not. We see the invert a lot with live service games, where people with dozens or hundreds of hours in the game pen a negative review and people do the old "well if you hate the game so much, why do you have *large number of hours* on it?" People want this weird sweetspot of playtime before a review is considered "valid." Enough playtime for the person to have just barely grasped the whole game, but not a minute more

But I also say two things about how people talk about the game: 1) The "it gets good when you get to the first expansion after lvl50" line is a huge exaggeration. The game phases out its tutorial period and gets into the story proper at around lvl17, and the story is *good* from that point on. At least if you enjoy kinda traditional JRPG stories. It's just that it starts delving into *exceptional* territory once the expansions hit. 2) If you don't enjoy your first hours of playing, you're under no obligation to continue. In fact, if you get past the lvl30 mark and aren't having a good time, I highly *encourage* you to quit, because that's no way to be spending your precious time.

The problem people don't get with a slow burn is that it still has to, y'know, burn. The part that exists to build up the really good bit needs to be engaging in it's own right, otherwise you've just made an impenetrable preamble of boredom. The best example I can present is a comparison of Jaws and Godzilla 2014, which many people compare to Jaws because of how little they show the titular monster. Jaws uses it's first two acts building suspense and makes sure to show you people getting dismembered to keep you hooked. Godzilla 2014 managed to dig some pathos out of you because Bryan Cranston could make a Wiseau script come to life but once he's dead we're stuck with Kickass in Camo trying to get to the interesting stuff while the movie plays coy with the fact that it's a kaiju movie. And the actual kaiju stuff in the third act is good enough to be a thing but the fact that I just sat through watching an hour of people running away from monsters sans seeing the monsters is a bit of a damper on the whole thing.

it's why i think survival horror works so well when it DOESNT rush you along with a stalker enemy. Silent Hill games got in my head because I'd spend time just...being in that oppressive world, even the odd half hour or so wandering around lost or trying to figure out a puzzle is stuck in this quiet, scary, gross environment...and it get's unnerving, by contrast if i'm playing something like outlast, I don't have time for that post adrenaline exhaustion because the panic and anxiety never end, you are always being chased. The quiet moments are as meaningful as the loud ones, because you know you have to step back into danger, and must do so willingly. In jaws, they could have just stayed on land...but knowing they needed to go back into the sea and face the monster, and giving the audience/player the time to worry about what's in the darkness, in the depths of the sea, and forcing THEM to choose to take the plunge, THAT is how you build suspense, THAT is how you build fear.

And while he was an important figure in the town, they all immediately turn on him, calling him a liar, and much worse, they start throwing stones at him. A litteral, biblical lapidation. And then two kids start defending him. And they get lapidated too. But then the child-lapidating villagers are reminded that actually, that guy is a pretty useful blacksmith and he helped the town in the past. And so they "forgive" him. I think the heart of this discussion can be boiled down to whether we engage with something because it's "compelling" or if it's "entertaining". In the TV world, all the big dramas that may take time to reveal their brilliance (Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul, Game of Thrones, Ozark, etc.) can be compelling as hell but not necessarily entertaining the whole time. In the video game world, we've sort of conditioned ourselves into playing games explicitly for entertainment. "Spec Ops: The Line" is one of the few games I can think of that is compelling without being even a little fun. I respect the hell out of that game but never want to play it again. But going beyond that, I think in the video game space part of the reason it can take time for a game to reveal its brilliance may be due to the number of mechanics they have to introduce. I love Fire Emblem games, but I'll freely admit they start slow often by design. You only ever start with 1-3 characters with 1-2 weapons and there just aren't many interesting choices you can make. This is great for newcomers, but for series veterans it can be a slog. And if the initial batch of characters/lore isn't compelling enough, it can be tough to get through that. But the depth of the gameplay and strategy reveals itself as you recruit more characters, have them level up, interact, evolve and so on. And by its design of your units being able to be killed off, there's a lot of organic storytelling that can happen as you get further along. But again, that only works once you feel attached to your units in the first place, which just won't happen after 2 missions.
@quintushavis7498

@abadenoughdude300
@abadenoughdude300 Год назад
@@quintushavis7498 The reason for that is that mostly we play games to have fun. Games certainly can be compelling and thought provoking but then they are immediately aimed at a different target group than the entertainment-focused games. It's the same with other forms of media as well - movies, books, music, they all have their artsy-fartsy pieces and their fluff for a "less involved" viewer. For a piece of art to be both compelling and fun at the same time so that both of those qualities don't interfere with eachother takes quite a bit of mastery.
@TheMaskedDonut
@TheMaskedDonut Год назад
@@zenithquasar9623 To be clear, I've never been bored with the beginning of a Fire Emblem game. But I can also easily see someone playing it for 1-2 hours and thinking: "This is it? Generic Anime characters moving around a board and clicking 1-2 options?". The depth of both gameplay and characters only reveals itself when you have more characters. And I think most Fire Emblem games do a decent job hooking you in narratively (though I will say as much as I'm loving "Engage", it's biggest problem to me so far is the slow start), but in terms of gameplay, it can be tricky. Honestly, I think most RPGs have this issue. I love Persona 5 to pieces, but the gameplay really only opens up after about 4-5 hours when you have 4 party members. Thankfully, it's got such a good intro, hook and narrative that it's no problem at all to dive in.
@TheMaskedDonut
@TheMaskedDonut Год назад
@@quintushavis7498 Indeed. Another game series that dances around that is "The Last of Us" (especially the second...). They are oppressively miserable games about bad people doing bad things. If you find a character you do like, by the end of their story, you'll find they've done stuff so heinous that you can't really justify still liking them. It's compelling as hell though because it's so well presented. It's no wonder it transitioned to a hit TV series so easily; it basically already was one. But is it entertaining? Well, the core gameplay feels more involved, thoughtful and cathartic than something like Spec Ops, and it does suit the world well. Then again, I feel like the reason Spec Ops' narrative does work so well is because of how unfun and generic it is. If it had the same level of cathartic feedback that your average Call of Duty game had, it wouldn't work. That's always been the conflicting thing about The Last of Us that I could never resolve. I think one game that, for all one can criticize about it that does hit both entertaining and compelling in this kind of way is Bioshock Infinite. It's also unbelievably violent, but the gameplay is so varied and wild that it's very entertaining. But the game has a twist up it's sleeve that ties into this, and the game is really good at distracting you so you never feel the weight of your actions in the moment. I think it also helps that of these games, it's the LEAST realistic so it can get away with bigger contrasts in tone.

Sry but 14 did get good at the first expansion which is why I didn't play it for years. Good thing they made a skip cutscene button. But I get it. Entertainment should be good from the start.

For FF14 they at least had the remaking the game from the ground up to explain why their plotting was pretty mediocre in ARR

I have more patience for the argument for a game you can theoretically spend thousands of hours in but if the game is 60hrs or so? I don't want to play anything I don't like for HALF the duration

@@erikaswanson2170 If I could sell out those Kingdoms to the Garliand empire on condition it spare me and Admiral Blowfish - the ONLY NPC as annoyed as I was that her guards couldn't fight off a group of bandits and needed me to do it. I would have. A sea of golden exclamation marks 90% of which are fetch quests from characters I am not supposed to care about, I finally quit when the rebel leader got kidnapped and the HQ for super cool special former rebel leaders that I was only allowed in to do her shopping for her was raided and I realized, I didn't care. "Yeah but if I save her, then I'd have to put up with being her gofer again... Yeah, not worth it!" That was at lvl 45 and it still hadn't "Gotten good.

If a game "gets good after 30 hours" I'm simply not playing it. Do the people saying that realize how many good shorter games I could play in 30 hours? Movies, TV, books? 30 hours is an incredibly large amount of free time to waste on something that isn't good when you don't have a lot of free time to begin with.
