Coming from the engineering world over the last 20 years, I am convinced that the methodical engineering science applications are much more effective in figuring out root causes and applying the scientific method properly than many physicians. I think there is a difference between practicing the art of medicine and discovering the pathways of disease based in the science of medicine and physiology. Attia, Feldman, and Cummings are making headway’s in medicine. This is refreshing to actually see science at work, finally.

It amazes me, having listened to hundreds of lectures from medical doctors, nutritionists, biologists, and health researchers, that some of the BEST information I have gleaned about nutrition either comes from engineers like Ivor Cummins, David Feldman, and Marty Kendell , or doctors who had undergraduate training in engineering, like Dr. Peter Attia and Dr. Ted Naiman. Even Dr. Jason Fung considered engineering as an undergraduate, before switching gears to pursue medicine. It also should come as no surprise that the icon of low carb research, the esteemed Gary Taubes, has a masters degree in engineering from Stanford. There is something about how adept the engineering mindset is at problem solving that puts it head and shoulders above the rest. I wish I had that mindset.

It's an objectively-based problem-solving mindset. I'm a biologist whose dad was an aeronautical engineer. This backround has served me well, I feel.

Engineering is the application of scientific knowledge to a problem with a view to soling that problem. It is distinctly different to "treatment" which is the normal course of medical supervision. It strikes me (an other Irish engineer) that until we change what we strive to achieve in medicine we are as Ivor says "not measuring the problem". We are highly unlikely to ever identify or rectify the problem if mitigating the symptoms is our goal. An other well constructed presentation from Ivor Cummins, great to watch and listen to.
@alphacause
@alphacause 6 лет назад
Garry Keogh, that was well said. Ultimately, especially as is the case in the United States, the amelioration of symptoms, verses doing a true root cause analysis to solve the underlying problem, is what drives profits sky high in our medical system. After all, a repeat customer (i.e. patient) brings in far more money than a customer that gets their problem solved, and never has to come back. When the medical/business model becomes that lucrative due to constantly having to "treat" the problem, despite being ineffective for the patient, those who profit off it are not incentivized to change it. As Upton Sinclair famously said: 'It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

I am always shocked by the standards of evidence in a lot of nutritional studies. Improper controls, failure to look at all causes, loose standards for data collection, etc. Coming from someone with a mathematical educational background, the rigor is incredibly low.
@lightningslim

Indeed Garry, when you think about it the very term we use for medical doctor's profession is "Medicine" not "Health!" :) It seems to define the method of thinking and practice for the majority of doctors.

A man stumbles up to the only other patron in a bar and asks if he could buy him a drink. "Why of course," comes the reply. The first man then asks: "Where are you from?" "I'm from Ireland," replies the second man. The first man responds: "You don't say, I'm from Ireland too! Let's have another round to Ireland." "Of Course," replies the second man. Curious, the first man then asks: "Where in Ireland are you from?" "Dublin," comes the reply. "I can't believe it," says the first man. "I'm from Dublin too! Let's have another drink to Dublin." "Of course," replies the second man. Curiosity again strikes and the first man asks: "What school did you go to?" "Saint Mary's," replies the second man. "I graduated in '62." "This is unbelievable!" the first man says. "I went to Saint Mary's and I graduated in '62, too!" About that time in comes one of the regulars and sits down at the bar. "What's been going on?" he asks the bartender. "Nothing much," replies the bartender. "The O'Malley twins are drunk again."

Making sense of the science once again, Ivor Cummins educates, entertains, and motivates as he gets to the root causes of chronic disease - and, more importantly, shows us a path to health!

Vitamin K2 the longer chain versions MK-7 MK-9 will activate the Matrix Gla protein which is part of the machinery that clears Calcium from Soft Tissues like arterial walls. It also activates another protein (machinery) that deposits Calcium in bones. Keywords: Natto, MK-7, Maxtrix Gla Protein, Osteocalcin.

While the doctors are trying to crowbar the facts into a preconceived narrative, the engineers say, "Why don't we let these facts speak for themselves? They might just tell us something."

Haha not just Doctors, internists, researches, cvd researchers, even cancer research... a lot of the root causes have been known for decades now. But we live in a free society (controlled by the treatment paradigm) so go figure
@Jefferdaughter
@Jefferdaughter 5 лет назад
@@TB1M1 - More accurately, treatments are controlled largely by profit motives. Type II diabetics are a prime example: they start on drugs like metformin, and progress to insulin. Under the 'standard of care' they will live for 2 or 3 decades or more, while being prescribed more and more highly profitable drugs - all for a disease that is mostly (or completely) te result of eating a bad diet, particularly refined carbohydrates and refined seed oils (cleverly marketed as 'vegetable').

I live in the UK, just turned 40 with a family history of heart disease, where can I get a CAC test?
@IvorCumminsScience
@IvorCumminsScience 6 лет назад
Hi Neil need ring around local hospitals and scanner centres - prices vary - make sure you get "CT scan for CAC score" - NOT "CT Angiogram" (with injected dye etc.). Minimal radiation, 5 minute scan. Need referral letter from your GP... Best, Ivor

If you reduce the risk of heart disease(and all the other carbohydrate driven conditions), health insurance companies could benefit financially because these businesses would no longer have to pay out for expensive medical procedures and drug therapies. Reinsurance companies will drive this change because that industry insures the insurers over the long term and have huge sums of money invested based on predicted universal future health outcomes in the population.

Thanks Ivor, a fan, BTW, SPC - Statistical Process Control is what took Intel from nothing to the top in 10 years, chip manufacturing faults went from 50% to 0.0001%, there would be no Modern Society without SPC. With today's sub micron photography and production modern electronics would NOT BE possible - Good thing "No iPhone", Bad thing "No iPhone" a paradoxical yin-Yang. but no modern society ... Today, even the modern TV has a near 100% reliability. BTW Pareto analysis used in Webpage Traffic analysis .... www.70GoingOn100.com the Centenarian Diet, or maybe 128, the Hayflick limit, … or if a Ray Kurzweil fan then this is a Moot Point …

If cholesterol is not the issue or (saturated fat or protein..) what is? The Cleveland Clinic studies, Minnesota study all reach the same conclusions. 743 people the number of arteriosclerotic plaques verified by qualitative angoigraphy is highest in those with high cholesterol. Of course corelation doesn't equal causation though. Check out Nathan Pritikins review of medical literature.

TB1M1 Dr. Esselstyn. Low carb is the antithesis of the answer, but of course no one wants to give up their bad habits. They won’t even consider the only fail-safe solution - a plant-based diet.

Yeah after listening to all those old pritikin tapes I want to hear a rebuttal showing where he was wrong. He didn't agree with the Ancel Keyes polyunsaturated fat replacement argument either.

Interestingly, all of the studies that pitch a low-fat, high carb diet against a low-carb, high-fat diet (with moderate protein in both) show the LCHF participants with better bloodwork and larger weight loss, even when the LCHF involves unrestricted calories. Huh! Wonder why that might be?
@judylloyd7901
@judylloyd7901 3 года назад
The issue is high carbohydrate foods and vegetable oils (seed oils) which are inflammatory. The amount of cholesterol in your bloodstream is fine so long as you don't have inflammation, which causes damage to arteries, which the body tries to fix, using LDL.
@judylloyd7901
@judylloyd7901 3 года назад
@@PaDutchRunner There is no "one size fits all" diet. Low carb works fantastically for some people. Many people, in fact. Plant based is fine as long as you have meat every now and then.
