In the most explosive episode ever, Iyanla works with Kamiyah Mobley: a 19-year-old who was kidnapped at birth and raised by her kidnapper. Today, with her abductor in jail, Kamiyah is left without a true identity or a mother to call her own.

I felt like she was triggered at the 1st hug. Something made me feel like the confusion of her life is so deep, that everybody is on eggshells with her. Like if she had never known about her abduction, who we saw at the very beginning is who she would have been her whole life. But that girl's impression of life is completely fractured. Everything is rooted in a lie...

i refuse to believe she had a “great life” with that kidnapper... the way her lil ass exploded like that? that’s 18 years of pain she endured while being there and she definitely explodes like that very often. i’m willing to bet that the biological mother didn’t wanna be there cuz she KNOW that lil girl got an awful attitude
@pjsaythis
@pjsaythis 6 лет назад
julie jules I think she did. From what little was shown of her life she upgraded from a teen mom to a middle class only child. But then by it got here the whole situation had already imploded and the kidnapper was in jail. So there is all that guilt of having caused her 'mother' to be in prison when she never really hurt her beyond taking her. And possibly the realisation that she probably was saved when really saw her original family. Whatever she was trying to do, register in college or whatever, didn't happen and all this is going on and the person who would normally rescue her is in jail and its her fault and what next. She is likely to be the one that set po-po on her kidnapper wanting to meet her real mom. And then realise after what she was giving up and what she was getting. The woman didn't even show up. Its a lot. I might have blown sooner.

Maybe not that this child didn't want help. Maybe she needed "Baby Steps" or extensive clinical therapy. I think this case was way too much to wrap up in a reality show of 1 to even 4 parts. That was a MESS!!!!

I believe it should have aired because as Iyanla said the next day, you can't be attached to the outcome, you must be attached to each phase and step of the the process. Kamiyah misunderstood what Iyanla said, and it lead to her emotions flooding out...Iyanla said "I gave your family a task, so they will not answer your calls or text,. If you want to leave, it is your choice"...Kamiyah heard "I sent your family home and told them not to answer your text or calls"...misunderstandings happen in everyday life, but once Kamiyah realized that her family hadn't left, her emotions never de-escalated....that is the truly scary part of it all. Also, they all had a chance to write down Kamiyah's characteristics and none of them wrote down aggressive, abrasive, vicious, controlling, in charge...Kamiyah literally said "They don't listen to you, they listen to me"...People needed to understand that not only did Kamiyah not have control of the emotions she didn't know existed, but her father nor her family were equipped to deal with it either. What happens if she misunderstands her boyfriend and her emotions flood out? The viewer should take heed to get help spiritually or psychologically help for these kind of issues because making someone comfortable is setting them up to blow up when they are away from you. Unresolved issues always come to a head.

I agree with you as far as how the young lady spoke to Iyanla. However, Iyanla did say that she was going to make her mad so that she could express what she is experiencing internally. I think The episode should have aired because like you said, Iyanla cannot “fix” everyone. Also, when you go into a therapeutic situation, you have to be willing to do the work! Good bad or indifferent. I don’t think the family was emotionally ready to do that.

I'm so tired of how our ppl cannot use common sense and blame everyone else for our actions except ourselves. She agreed to do the show and that meant being willing to do the exercises given(ON NATIONAL TELEVISION). No one said they would be easy. But the amount of us I see blaming iyanla and not Kamiyah shows why we have so much dysfunction in our community. We must take accountability for our ACTIONS!
@NaturalCola

I do think it should have aired. At the end of the day Iyanlas show is her “business”, the ratings for that show were probably some her best. None the less, the family called her. If they weren’t ready to discuss the situation or even open their eyes and hearts a “little” to what Iyanla asked of them they should have stayed home. Quiet as it’s kept they may be just doing interviews and TV for money anyways. 🙄During an interview Kamiya stated that she was “raised well and had a good life”. I have to disagree she may have had a good life in her eyes but she definitely was NOT raised right! I was disgusted by the way she spoke to Iyanla, someone they called and someone who was simply trying to help!! Her language, and body language were unacceptable I don’t care how hurt she is!

She was like, you call her and get cussed out smh! She is the one Who set this into motion then pulled out, which I think was the source of kamiyah distrust of the process. The dad said she will get mad and block the girl, she told iyanla the mom is cool One week then tripping the next. You are absolutely right, Dineva. I was an angry black woman for a long time because I had to raise my sisters while my mom ran the streets. Now that we are of age, they lie, hide and duck and dodge from me because they don’t want to have to “answer” to me, but all I want to do is be their big sister. It’s as though they have shifted their anger for her on to me, because I stepped into that mother figure role and treat her like the big sister. Watching this video brought up a lot😔

Sorry for the long respond BUT... As a mental health therapist... I sooooo appreciate this episode. It illustrates to the world what is looks like when we work with individuals who are not ready for healing and that OK. As painful as it was to watch this episode, I believe in my heart it helped someone. It helped someone see themselves at this phase in their life and can now decide ..This is not where I want to be and “I want help”, “I do not want to live the rest of my life in pain” and “If I can’t do it alone, there are people who can help me through this process”. This is reality at it’s finest. Iyanla made herself vulnerable when airing this episode and I’m glad she did.

When the dad said, “I’ve never seen her act this way” and Iyanla said “how is it I’ve been here for one day and knew that was in her and you have been around her for this long and never saw it” it was so deep to me. I truly believe all we ever want is for people to “see” us and none of them actually “see” her, but Iyanla saw her right away. The biological mother sees what she lost, the abductor mom obviously only cared about what she wanted and kept up the lie and the father seems to just want to live the fantasy that all is well. None of them “see” her... Iyanla saw right through that wall. I feel for her and really hope she allows Iyanla to come back and finish the work.

The abductor did not take that child out of love, but pure insanity and selfishness. She put that child in the place of another. Where is the bio mother had real love and lost for this specific individual. The abductors love did not come from a real place and thats the conflict within that child. We have to start from the seed of truth on this one.

This episode was incredibly hard to watch because I felt for the young lady, but I also felt for her birth mom who was robbed literally and figuratively--and at an age (16) where she herself was ill-equipped to handle someone violating her in such a devastating manner. You hit the nail on the head when talking about the time to parent is over. Kamaiyah is legally an adult, and has already been raised. Now is the time for getting to know her, not trying to change or correct behavior. But so many absentee (in this case not by choice) parents don't understand that. You're mourning your baby, but that baby has grown up. And this is where some intense therapy comes in to get a better understanding of that. The other thing that's striking is for as much love as Kamaiyah has for Gloria, something in her upbringing had to be rough or off as all hell because people raised in loving households don't lash out at their elders like that. No matter what generation, when you have responsible, well-adjusted parents, they teach you respect and all that cursing out elderly strangers who haven't harmed you wasn't warranted--so all that "normal household," "she was so loving" mess Kamaiyah was talking about seems like a farce. Idk if this episode should have aired, but it does show why so many young African-American girls "seem" angry when in reality they are dealing with situations not of their own making that they are ill-equipped to handle.

I'm sorry I feel differently. I was pissed at Kamiyah for what she did and I honestly started seeing her in a different way. Yeah I understand your life has been turned upside down, but you cursed Iyanla out for telling your Dad and boyfriend not to answer your phone call for 1 night but you refuse to say anything bad about a woman who denied your father the right to call you for 19 years...girl bye! What THAT was about...it wasnt even about her Father...Kamiyah was mad that Iyanla had THE BOYFRIEND...NOT TO ANSWER!!! She couldn't care less about the father or birth mother....thats why the Birth mother called....because she dont know them and thus cant love them how they feel they should be loved. I think the parents need to just let her be with the woman who stole her. Sad to say...but she won in all this cause this girl will always see her as mom. Let her go...but heres the thing....should she die....dont come running your ass over here for a new momma...no ma''am....you had one.

Your story about your grandmother really touched me to the core. MY dad moved back in with us when I was around 11 or 12. He had left when I was 3. He did not know how to parent me. He either doted on me or was absent. Mostly because he wanted to stay away while dealing with his demons and then would buy me things to reconcile his own guilt. He moved back in because he was homeless and it DID NOT make things better. In his depression I remember him yelling at me 1 time and I looked him dead in the eye with a straight face and said, "You are not my mother, you just got back here you do not have the rights or relationship with me to yell at me. Come talk to me when you calm down." I went to my room and I heard him crying. Our relationship really never got back on track. I just never could find that light hearted love I had as a young kid and he didn't know how to find his way back. Later in life, he stepped back in after I was grown to help me and my mom out of a tough time, worked hisself sick and within a couple years, we were taking care of him and now he's on hospice. Our shit is sooooo deep man.

RayneyKayLa Thank you for your kind words. Trust me, I do my healing immediately and am fairly equipped myself to deal with the depths of darkness and the brightest of light. I dedicate my life to examining the psyche and observing. I love my pain as much as I love the highlights of my life. My dad and I are fine, he suffers greatly though, and that sometimes makes me sad, but I have life to focus on, and he has his journey to end when he chooses to be done. I've expressed great love and gratitude for him and his redemption story and he has done to same, he's always proud. We cannot get any of that time back, but I also never feel entitled to life of joy without trauma and heartache, it is as much the human experience as anything else. So, believe me when I say, I carry only that which I need, sis. You are loved and I wish you joy and light and understanding through your dark times :)

She won't even admit Gloria kidnapped her. No judgement but during her conversation with Iyanla Everytime she would say Gloria lied, you were taken etc the girl would immediately shut it down. It's a sad situation because kamiyah and her biological mother were robbed. I Gloria Is responsible for this. And she shouldn't get rewarded by being able to maintain a relationship with the child she stole. It's so unfair. Because she lost her baby she took somebody else's. Yeah she's sitting in jail now but the damage has already been done. The damage began the day she stole her. I hope this young lady finds peace. I hope then biological family finds peace. You spoke my life! My grandmother once told me she felt EVERYONE of those birth pains when my mom had me. My grandmother was my mom in every way. Even with the loving and affection (but verbally abusive) relationship with her daughter(my mama), my grandmother had my heart. My therapist said that dynamic is very dangerous and quite common. You are right. It does not cause friction until a certain time. For us, it was when I turned 30 and my mom moved back to GA from Los Angeles. Shit just got weird! My grandmother and I already had our routine. We just continued to grow closer as best friends. It has strained my relationship with my mom. We still have joy, but there's a competition there for who was closer to her mom. Sigh Thank you Q for your transparency. I needed that today. It's not just me!

Giiiirl!!! I was hoping you called me about this shit! I'm was so mad watching this. First off as a father, well... I can't say as a father because he didn't get that chance, but actually I can say as a father because he has multiple kids. As a MAN first then as a father, he should not had allowed that girl to talk to Iyanla like that! Ok she was mad, but all that cursing and threatening she did to that mature woman was wrong and it's no excuse for it. By him standing there and watching his daughter disrespect this woman and not once intervene, he is basically letting her know that it's ok for you to disrespect anybody because you mad. It's scary because if she don't get that under control, somebody go hurt her or harm her. Everybody's not go be so understanding to the fact you have issues and they will let her know with the quickness.

This girl did way too much with no discipline from her daddy! I feel for what she been through and i know she cant just get over it but dont enable her to have that behaviour. Iyanla was not given the opportunity to help. Instead of her dad being all up on Facebook blasting her he should have his daughter apologize and he should do the same. That disrespect really turned my stomach. That's probably why the biological mom didn't show up because she couldn't deal with it.

I know Iyanla had the best intentions to help this young woman heal, but I saw this entire situation taking a turn for the worst when Iyanla took away Kamaiah's ability to have a choice in whether she wanted to connect with her father/boyfriend or not. She's lived her life not having a choice in who she's connected with, as it was forced upon her. Her reaction was explosive and very telling and the emotions we saw are projections, things she hasn't said to her biological mother OR to the woman who raised her. When left to write, Kamaiah shares her lack of trust in her biological mom not showing up for HER and that's integral... so the emotion is alive and well, but Iyanla could have redirected the energy, giving Kamaiah power, when she's ultimately been left powerless, to deal with the decisions other people made for her. 😢

She gave her power when she told her she could choose to stay or not. When the episode started from the very beginning, I told my husband I'm so scared. I couldn't explain my feelings I was just terrified because of the depth of the issue. I was scared for the young lady because she hasn't really faced her feelings. It's a tough situation and I believed from the very start that if the young lady really allows herself to go to the tough and deep places within her self, she would experience unbearable pain and not be able to recover from it. She needs psychotherapy. A one hour show was not suitable for this subject matter because it has too too many layers. Iyanla is well capable... The anointing on her life is apparent, but each member of that family would have needed a separate week each to really deal with this and then maybe another month as a collective to try to get to some resolution. I'm still really scared for that poor child's sanity. I think to myself, that were I in this predicament, i would think "what kind of person have I been dealing with all my life that could do something so heinous and live with themselves for that many years. I have been I the hands of the same kind of monster who take little children and do horrible things to them you didn't do horrible things to me but what separates you from them." I'm so sure she is suppressing those very thoughts. She didn't even want Iyanla to call her mom (abductor) a liar or refer to the situation as a lie, when that's what you have lived for 17+ years. The poor baby shut down and when she does open up it's all rage and anger. I hope she doesn't turn that on herself.

Her whole world has been flipped upside down! They should’ve gotten her counseling a long time ago. The first time she received counseling shouldn’t have been with cameras in her face! Don’t get mad at her for her outburst. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to go through that! I think Iyanla telling her that her dad and boyfriend wouldn’t answer her call triggered an abandonment issue. The woman who raised her is in prison and her birth mother didn’t show up for her. Iyanla wanted a reaction and that’s what she got! However, you can’t open the can and not have a way to put the lid back on. I know her plan was for her dad to reel her in but I could’ve told her that plan was faulty. The dad was not equipped to deal with that type of outrage. You can tell he tip toes around her so she doesn’t get mad at him. Iyanla should’ve passed on this one! She needed private, one on one counseling. Iyanla couldn’t reel her back in because there wasn’t enough history there between them. No relationship had been established. That’s what one on one counseling would’ve have done. You need time to peel back the onion.

I think that it is good that it aired because the premise of Fix my Life is not to only help the individual on the show but to allow a wider viewing audience to see themselves in these individuals thus allowing the viewers to take the steps to fix their own lives. In the case of Kamiya, although the episode didn’t end in a positive way it allows the viewers to realize that the emotional healing process is extremely difficult and doesn’t always end in happily ever after. Sometimes emotional healing cant be rushed or forced. Until Kamiya is ready to face her pain, nobody can help her. I wish her the best but I do believe that many people can garner a lot from this episode even if their situations aren’t exactly the same.

Dineva, you hit it right on the head. Gloria is that childs mother. That is the only mother she had known. Kimaya is at a time in her life where a parent is no longer the manager but a consultant as Oprah has said. Kimyas birth mother wants to start from the beginning as a manager and that position, unrightfully so, was taken away from her. Shattered glass does not mend. She needs to understand that forcing Kimaya into her perception of how things should be will just drive her away. This episode should not have aired. Kimaya is 19 and her brain and emotions are not fully developed to acknowledege the pain let alone beginning a healing process.

My same thoughts the wounds are too fresh it’s only been a year then on top of that she is 19 and doesn’t have the capacity to deal with this. I’m a social worker that works in child welfare and see the same thing with children in foster care, no matter what their parents have done to them or how bad the abuse is at the end of day they still want mama. Q, was absolutely right Gloria is her mom and at the end of the day that’s who she wants. The dad in this situation will only make things worst for her in the future and eventually when he stops giving into her she will become violent and aggressive towards him as well. Bio mom is still that 16 year old girl longing for that infant.

Chequetta Deadmon this is true and so sad for everyone involved, I couldn’t even imagine going thru this, I think it would have driven me off the edge. And that poor biological mom, she now has to process this current place not matching her fantasies And her daughters love for that wicked woman who wrecked her life. It is not right but She will have to find a way to reconcile it in her mind for her peace and sanity.

The lady that at the end that was coming to meet Kamiyah was Carlina White. Lifetime did a movie on her life called Abducted. Keke Palmer played her. Real good movie but her story is almost identical to Kamiyah's because she also was torn between her bio mom and her kidnapper.

Her dad knew damn well that she was capable of acting out and displaying bad behavior. When Iyanla brought up then idea about the no contact assignment he was very adamant about not doing it and he looked very worried as if he knew that his new daughter could fly off the rails. Communication and Honesty is lacking in that family and nobody is calling a thing a thing.

I know what it's like to raise someone who doesn't live in the reality of the situation. I was Iyanla most of my life. Getting the dirty end of the broom stick, while trying to help. The child has been pacified her entire life. She gave her what she wanted in order to keep her happy and quiet. Spoiled children are far worse than unraised children. You have to give them what they want and walk on egg shells. You add that onto all of the pain and you have cocktail made of disaster. The little girl needs intensive therapy. Individual and family therapy.

I think the show airing, shows what it looks like when someone is not ready to heal, and when issues aren't addressed. I agree with you on why the biological mom didn't come, that's a hard pill to swallow and maybe she's seen the wrath of that little girl. I pray she gets the help she needs before she has her own children and it's doesn't start a pathology. I think iyanla helped because even though the lid has been opened, and she may not be ready for the healing now, a circumstance or may be a still moment will arise down the line where she'll reflect on what happen and work on her healing.

That young lady has a lot of pent up anger that needs to be addressed and released. Everyone else has been walking on eggshells with her because of fear. This angry outburst was long overdue. It was bound to happen sooner or later. She’s a ticking time bomb and needs help stat! She can very well take someone’s life or lose her own because she’s ill equipped to deal with the magnitude of her situation and will snap again at the slightest provocation. I would agree that this shouldn’t have happened in this venue, but hopefully it will become the impetus for a change in mindset for all concerned. This family is on life support. Ivanla was correct when she said Kamiyah’s anger was really with her situation and not with Iyanla. Iyanla was the safe and easy target. The next one may not be so safe and easy. Even as she was cussing Iyanla out, I never once said that her little ass deserves a classic beat down. She needs help and it was painfully and sorrowfully displayed. To say Kamiyah has “misplaced anger” is an understatement. Her anger shouldn’t be classified as an angry Black woman (I hate that goddam term). That’s minimizing and trivializing her situation. This child was kidnapped and has classic Stockholm Syndrome. Be it right or wrong, at least Iyanla has exposed the depth of the anger, hurt and pain this young woman is experiencing.

Your opening up and revealing how your grandmother poured into you and raised you shows where your wisdom comes from. You are definitely have that old age wisdom and when you say how you weren't trained in psychology, wisdom trumps education any day in as far as I am concern. This show with Iyanla brought up in me how in my life, I had three mothers because I was raised in foster care. I could never fit in at any of my various family functions because I felt like an outsider. I still feel odd - calling my birth mother Mom to my Mom that raised me. But when I am with my birth Mom, I call her Mom. The show helped me cope with all of those emotions.

Iyanlas show is saving OWNS life! I LOVE her and I agree she does seem to touch on issues that relate to our experience. Cant wait for her to come to Baltimore in April!! I think it was important for her to show this seemingly fail. It gives the show more credibility. Therapy does not always work - people are not always ready. I believe that the people who watch her show and really get something out of it can appreciate the realness of that situation. I think she made a good choice airing the show. That girl went OFF didnt she? It completely shocked me. She was and is a ticking time bomb! This was an excellent video from you
